Verdun Stuff (imagine that)
from Margo's Photo Album
Hope this sparks a few Real Verdun type Memory's.........................................
Saturday Morning was usually spent at the Savoy,...........or the Vogue (3movies for cheap), ....Remember some of the old flicks we used to think were somewhat scary,..................Imagine with todays graphics & hi-tech computerized visions,................these old Movies couldn't get a half full theatre,.but back in those early days (for us at least) Movies were fantastic,....and yet silly stuff,...I wonder what our parents thought when we went to movies like this:....the Creature (great word) from the Black Lagoon ,......... Yikes !! Real Scary Stuff eh?.........hahahahahah HF&RV (our parents were probably quite happy to have an afternoon off, from us howling kids.......................hahahahaha
carefull ,for those who are faint of heart,.you may want to avoid looking at this picture,.it's just too scary.................. ........... Remember this was very sinister stuff,......................hahahahaha HF&RV
that's a good question,.I don't know ,.but I'm sure the info is out there somewhere,..Who was it? ....and wasn't the creature called 'gillman' or something like that?? HF&RV
Got your .25 cents ready? or was it .50cents? Some Glosette Raisins,.or Popcorn ,.and a watereddown Fountain Coke ..........and were headed into the Savoy.......................inside the Entrance........................then into the Theater itself............... ...................Get a little closer to the stage ??...............and this is where a Saturday afternoon would be spent,......... sitting behind some girls you liked (but wouldn't admit,at the time)hahahahahaha Growing up hahahahahaha All Fun when looking back,.....................................Growing Up in Verdun (Montreal) ..have fun and Remember Verdun
Ok Bill ,.I looked it up,.sort of a trick question , as two separate actors played the Creature................ Ben Chapman (did the onland sequences)and Ricou Browning ( did the underwater shots)...............Creature From The Black Lagoon" Richard Carlson, Julia Adams and Richard Denning Gill Man: Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning "Revenge Of The Creature" John Agar, Lori Nelson and John Bromfield Gill Man: Tom Hennesy and Ricou Browning "The Creature Walks Among Us" Jeff Morrow, Rex Reason and Leigh Snowden Gill Man: Don Megowan and Ricou Browning At least I got the Gill man part right.................hahahaha http://usersites.horrorfind.com/home/horror/blackylagoon/blacklagoon.html The Creature from the Black Lagoon ,...has it's own website ...and carefull girls,..........he's Pent Up with Passion,........hahaha TERRIFYING MONSTER OF THE AGES RAGING WITH PENT-UP PASSIONS! ....BORN BEFORE TIME BEGAN ! ..........................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun there's your Saturdai afternoon Matinee ( but if your quiet,.you can hide & sit through the same movie again,........Afterall you don't have to be home until Supper........................................hahahahahah
Even old Ben Chapman has a website:looks more like Bette Davis , in What ever happened to Baby Jane.............hahahaha nice lipstick Here's Ben Chapmans site address: http://www.the-reelgillman.com/ hf&rv
rfmurph ..Welcome to the show,........ and these are Fantastic Verdun Pictures.............always appreciated when this type of input appears,.....as kids growing up in Verdun,..I'm sure many of us have seeen these same type of family pics,....... I hope it inspires many more of us to check through our old 'shoe boxs' of pictures ,.and find some more Verdun stuff like this..... Thanks for sharing ,.& as Maggiemck as said,....'keep 'em coming' Welcome Again to VerdunConnections: Have Fun& Remember Verdun
Regarding Vincent Price, I thought he played a good role as a ladies man in 'Laura' 1944 with Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews. I bought a copy of this classic film noir and watch it from time to time. Bill
Check out this bridge ,it looks almost identical to Our 4th avenue 'rainbow' bridge in Verdun ..........althought this one is somewhere along the Historique Route 66......... ...you know ,where you can get your kicks....... HF&RVwww.mikesworldtour.com/crosscountryusa2004.htmboth the Gus's Redhot building & this Bridge shot ,were random shots found on that link posted above...................
A few of us have been in this restaurant I guess,.Although I was more familiar with the many Wellington Street Restaurants, & 2nd avenue & Verdun restaurant,..look at the arrow direction sign,(for the street direction) it looks like you can see through it.as the 'e' in Verdun can be seen through the direction sign...................................................... HF&RV
Looks like you have to be a member ,.for that house exchange,..but that's no big deal,.and I would imagine they aren't looking for just last June to August,............... but it can't hurt to ask,......... HF&RV
now this place looks rather menacing.....................the Douglas Hospital ,in it's early years, certainly looked a little less imposing & scary ,with the trees having matured and the fenced grounds, when we knew the place.......................... Yikes ,this is a little more like a prison (which I guess it was).............................. HF&RV
douglas had a very bad reputation in 60,s and 70,s, presently it is the top mental health facility in canada. i started to work as a candy striper in 1960, after furthering my education and some 8 yrs later i decided to return to behavior theraphy there. no regrets. carolyn bennett to think that 2 scottish lords james douglas, william perry started all this.
Les In the photo of 5th and Verdun that taxi stand is still there....when I lived on 6th my folks would send me over to get a taxi so we could "Uptown"..a treat at that time..cross the street and catch the "7".Now thats how far back this one goes.. That stand is still there...Wonder if it still Hemlock... Thanks Lad
Les. Strange that you should bring that movie up. The Tingler. I had not seen it since the days of black and white TV. They just showed it on TCM a few days ago. Great movie.
A familiar view,.we've all experienced at one time or another,.......... Nuns Island from the boardwalk---------- I posted the same picture in two sizes,.......makes a neat Desktop Photo, Have Fun and Remember Verdun
Verdun,.Wellington taken looking towards Downtown, from Church & Wellington (roughly)....... btwn Church & Galt .This must be near that bookstore ,that was mentioned???Amazing how close Verdun really was to Downtown,.yet we thought we were heading out on a great adventure as kids, when boarding the Bus & heading for Centre Ville........................................ it's all about perception. ............and of course we've seen this one before too,.....but always neat to see the old stomping grounds & familiar landmarks hf&rv
the Jolicour Metro Station,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but look to the right,.and the old 4th av bridge ,with it's familiar arch's......that's a big metro station,.......I seem to Remember seeing the Angrion station,.and it too seemed big.............don't Remember them being there yet ,when I left LaBelle Province,......but maybe they were ,as I watched the Verdun Metro (Galt Av ,on the old Greenberg's property)..then Greenberg's moved diagonally across the street to the corner of Gordon & Wellington,Anyone know when the metro continued on to Angrion.....??? (it may have been built while I was there, but I don't think so ( mid-70's??) hf&rv
Les Guessing Metro was around 1980 or just after...been so long take it for granted..The original line is 40 and then they added the blue line runs near U of M...that would be maybe within last 15 or 20 yrs..I think. Lad
Looks like were getting some exposure from Mr Gravenor,..who writes a lot of stuff for 'Coolopolis" which is a neat site, with a lot of Montreal stuff toofound this blurb ,(while searching for VerdunStuff(Montreal too of course) None other than Kristian Gravenor suggested you check out the MSN Verdun Connections board. I guess it was off a blog type site,,..................... We've posted articles from the montreal Mirror, or the Front,..........and made referance to the Coolpoplis site ,before,. So check them out too............. HF&RV
Some more old Verdun pics,.these are from Notre Damede le Paix (?) the year 1959,....which school was this? or where was it?One thing I do Remember are those old desks, with carvings from our parents in some of those old wood tops,.and the ink well.........hahahahalook at the 'cast legs'..........also this school seems to have Wooden Floors,.where as the Willibrord (Grade School) had a marble or polished granite type of floor,.Remember the jamitors would spread 'dustbane' on the floors & then sweep it up,.....I think it was scented to mask the puke smell,or rotting lunches..................hahahaha There was always someone getting sick it seems,.....................Now look at this assembly ......in front of ' the big church' ...and it's the crew from the Richard school on Galt,.......... JMH maybe some of these people you knew of?these are from the 30's...........I sat on those stairs a few times sneaking a smoke,.......& keeping an eye for my oldman coming home, as he used to park on Galt at times,. hf&rv
Remember 'Tousinants'.......................he unfortunatley was shot to death ,across the street at the Bank of Montreal,.making a deposit in the night deposit shute............but there's an old store of his,......There sure were alot of shops along Wellington Street,.............I'll bet it's lit right now with all those Christmas Decorations,........... ..................Only 16 Days left till Christmas...........hf&rv
Kids in Lanes................now that says Verdun,.... Look at the tire tracks in the snow,.Rememeber walking over those ruts,.or scurrying up the side of a snowbank in each side of the cross lanes,..to get out of the way of the Oil Truck,.......or Garbage Truck etc etc....that does look like pretty good snow for snowballs,.......Remember making up a whole whack of snowballs & then bombarding some unsuspecting Bus,hahahahahahaha have fun and Remember Verdun
I wonder what park this is in,..... I like the old 'box shelter for the team.and the penalty box was just like that too..... look in the background on the righthand side,.and you can see the PVM ..it looked far away, but when I go back to visit Montreal,.it always seems so close to Downtown,.and easy to see the buildings................ (this site, says that this hockey team is also Notre Dame de le Paix..........but as kids go we all looked the same,.......boy those hellmets were really something weren't they............hahahahaha not much more than a headband...................Yikes !!! hf&rv
Is this biere (beer) still sold in Verdun? It looks like the old stone house on Lasalle Blvd. Guy do you know of this beer with that house on the label.Has anyone tried it,.is it any good? the write up says it's a VerdunBeerHere's some info on it: 2000 (?)
Cette bi챔re a 챕t챕 cr챕챕 en collaboration avec Jean-Fran챌ois Joannette, un Verdunois passionn챕 de bi챔re, et la microbrasserie Charlevoix. Gracieuset챕 du site web www.bieresetmonde.com ..I'll have to get some & try it,........... I have tried some of old Robert Charlebois (bilge water) he passes off as Beer,............It's not that good,.& too strong tasting,............anyone tried that stuff,. 'Fin du Monde' is one of the names,....and they had several others,.........didn't much care for it either.but I will try the Verdun one,...................somebody send me out a 'truckload' will ya,..........afterall I'd have to give it a fair chance............hahahahaha hf&rv
Les In the picture of the lanes.Do you remember the big snow plow that used to clear them. Same version as the sidewalk one only much bigger. As for the hockey picture not sure of the rink but the sweaters say NDP on them. Wonder if it is the rink on 6th and Verdun Ave. NDP I am guessing could be the Church that sponsered them.. Lad Hey get my gift yet......................
Here's the old StWillibrord's school,.both the grade school,.and the second photo is the HighSchool....and a parade of sorts in the schoolyard off Willibrord........................hf&rv
Les, I tried to get this Argoulet beer at the Joanette store on Church near Wellington about 2 years ago but they told me that it was not available on account of the lack of demand. You are right about the picture, it is the Maison Saint Dizier on LaSalle blvd. The name Les Argoulets is named after the first pioneers that arrived in Verdun in the 17th century and started farming the territory. I already posted historical information on the subject. On of the pioneers was named Étienne Campeau, who was the first Campeau to arrive in Canada and is the first generation of whom my wife is a descendant. Guy
Les, Notre Dame de la Paix school is situated on Caisse street and this is a picture I took on the 21st of April of this year. JM went to this school and may even be on one the photos you posted.. I am making copies for our archives. Me and my wife were baptised in this parish but did not go to this school. Guy
Les, We lived directly in front of the Bannantyne school in the 40s. Grace Kennell lived next door to us (857 Galt) and was a close friend of my sister Liliane. I am forwarding the photo to her and will she ever be surprised. Guy
Hello Guy ,.i trust you & your family are enjoying the holidays:Here's another photo I took many years ago, when the school on Galt (which too is now condos) but it was at 200 Galt I beleive ( as my sister in law lived across from it at 199 Galt).....I understood this to be the school ( or at least one of them ) that JMH attended ) Ecole Richard ??? I used to skate on the rink that the French Brothers would put up every winter,.......... ...................I also am trying to post another photo that I took from my front gallery in the early 70's on Lasalle Blvd ( in Lasalle) I think it was the Knights of Columbus or something like that,...directly across from me was a nice view of the rapids,.and what is now a bird sanctuary, using the filled in area of the old Powerhouse: I hope these pictures show up Ok,...............You can see a Cross in the yard behind the tree,I think it also had a rosary hanging on it,.............. Do you Remember the correct name of this organization,? I thought it was the Knights of Something ,...or Kinsmen,.??? Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Today Jan25 th is of course Robbie Burns Day ,.....the birthday of the man who song We all sing at New Years,.."Auld Lang Syne" ( did I get that right?..hahaha) ......but the Verdun Connection to this story ,in keeping with the Topic (Thread) Heading,......is that \ That Old Verdun Landmark ,.......Muirs Pastry Shop ,.used to make Haggis for those true Scots, who loved the stuff......................Montreal lost a great store ,when Eddie finally moved .....but the store lives on in Ontario now ( Maxville I believe),............ So Salut to the Muirs ,...and all the Scots around Verdun & the rest of the planet too !................ Cheers ,now rush out & down a shot of Drambuie ,Yikes ...............hahahahha I used to love that stuff,..... Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Certainly was a Tousignant'slike that one on the side of the Bus................................MTC hf&rv(and I didn't use up any letters)..............hahahahah
Hi there ! re: http://groups.msn.com/VerdunConnections/verduntrivia.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=51709 Someone knows the intersection ? Make, model and year of MTC bus 4360 ? JM
Yes...Muirs is now in Maxville Ontario...just a short drive of an hour and a bit. They make great Haggis pies and still have the traditional Bridies and meat pies . I was there in October and was sure to pick up all of the above and some black pudding as well ( yes it is really blood pudding ) I am of scottish blood , what can I say...I like the stuff !
Hello Donna , I can't Remember the last time I even thought of Blood Pudding./...........I know I did like it at some point,.but also recall having made a decision at some point ,that I just didn't buy it anymore ( well over 35 plus years ago,..i don't even think I've ever seen it again since leaving Labelle Province decades ago,...............but that sure is a memory prompt ,............................................................................................................HF&RV
Victoria BC ,.on Vancouver Island,.................. So Best Regards from Canada's Westcoast..................................HF&RV I will now make a point of seeing if the stores around here carry it ,..I think my 87 yr old Mother likes the stuff too...... ( not sure if I do anymore, but will have a look)........................... hf&rv
I noticed that you have alot of threads on this site....you must be very connected to Verdun Connections. How old are you anyways , if you don't mind me asking . Is your wife from Verdun ? I doubt very much that you can get a good blood pudding from anywhere in Canada ( except from Muirs :) ) Here in Quebec they have Boudain but it is nasty stuff , not even close to what blood pudding is from Scotland
I Remember corner grocery stores having Blood Pudding,...and I think you had to ask for it (so they would make some for certain customers) many display cases didn't really have a lot,....but in the earl 60's I Remember having it fairly often,.........I didn't know Muirs even sold it at all,.which is weirs cause Mr Muir let me work in their store, one summer many moons-ago,.when Billy & Eddy worked there. My brother ended up buying there delivery van, which was a '66 ish Ford Econline Van red/white,...use to be a Keating Ford Delivery Van,.and Walter ( Mr Muir ,to me) bought a '68?? Mazda with am/fm as standard equipment ( a big deal in those days ...hahaha),...it was a little red 4door ( I think?)I Remember asking Mr Muir if I could have an Apple Turnover ,which had just come out of the oven,...and his answer to me was ,.Les ,you have whatever you want ,because in two weeks ,you won't want any of these goods,( a Wise Man Mr Muir,.cause He was right,......and to this day ,although I do like sweet stuff,.I rarely have any)........hahahahahabut We would still eat the Meat Pies ,when they came out of the oven,& have ketchup with them.,...........mmmmmm they were the best: All good memory's .....................................HF&RVas far as being Connected to this site,......I guess you could say that, many of us participated almost right from the beginnning & went through many growing pains,of MSN & other minor bumps,..but here it is 5 years later, and the site is still growing ,and we appreciate all the effort & input from everyone ,who likes to relay Verdun/Montreal type story's & memories & pictures of course:..................So Thanks to MaggieMck,.....I have been able to enjoy (for the most part) many Stories & Memories of Verdun,.from many different people ,I would most likely never have met,....also came across some old friends from school daze ,etc etc ............I Hope you come across ,some old familiar faces,& also Have Fun & Remember Verdun,I think I found this site, while surfing for Verdun stuff,..and came across it within days of it's inception,The rest my Verdun Friend ,is History......hahaha

JM #4360 looks like a MACK could be 50's or early 60's but don't think so. But upon second look could be Canadian Car... Nope go with Mack I am gonna say 195X something. I got one for you do you remember when they had 3 different size of CCar buses...one on the 25 was a small model to go up and down the street and was a stick shift..the other 2 were on the larger routes.man did that 25 have an exhaust smell on it... Lad
Hi Lad ! Indeed, MTC’s bus 4360 is a Canadian Car (CC&F), model CD-52, diesel, 45 seats, (1958) Concerning the intersection, I will have to check it in Lovell directory ... Excuse the delay, I had some problems with my computer JM
Hi Lad ! The other photo: http://groups.msn.com/VerdunConnections/verduntrivia.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=51709 Lovell, 1955: Annuaire alphab챕tique montr챕alais Tousignant & Fr챔re Yvon Tousignant 4835 Wellington Verdun J. Yes 4th Avenue is right ,.and Mr Tousignant was shot to death right across the street from his store, while attempting to make a 'Night Cash Drop' at the outside Deposit Box of the Bank of Montreal,...........I believe the robber was caught, and I think his name was Moran ??? ( I can't recall his first name) ,...but I Remember after hearing of the shooting on the radio the next morning ,I did walk up there to sort of visualise where it was he was killed, ( Morbid Curiosity,as a kid I guess) & we thought we saw stains on the sidewalk ,which we believed to be his blood.................................. He ran his store for a lot of years, what a terrible way to have his life taken away,
Remember what was here?? VerduReader posted this picture last August,.......still looks weird to not see the old familiar radio station CKVL,............................I guess much of the many things we were familiar with, has disappeared,...........some for the better, some perhaps not? They have made the waterfront really nice ,and a few other things,I guess,.but Hard to think of Verdun without the Stadium,.........or many of the Granite Pillars & railings from the boardwalk,...the old Firetruck in the Park behind the Police/FireStation,./......the Police/FireStation for that matter....Leblanc's Boat Rentals, and all those wharf's HF&RV
Hi Les. A sad story to that photo at Wellington And Third Ave. when they removed the gas tanks from that building they placed them along the side of the building near the lane and left them. As I am thinking it may have been accross the street behing the building that is there, as there was space. All the children including myself used to play on them.My mother and others were always after us telling us that it was dangerous many complaints were made nothing was done. One day the tank rolled over onto a child and crushed him. That would be in the 40's I guess. Ron.
Yikes ! Ron,.was this a friend of yours ( schoolmate?) what sad day that would be for the parents,,,,Nowadays I would imagine huge lawsuits,......but inthose days,it would have been read as a tragic accident...... I have never heard that story, before: hf&rv
I wonder when this happened, I lived on Third Ave near Lasalle from 1939 till 1956, and it was a Chrysler dealer at Third & Wellington York Auto well into the fifties, they closed the gas pumps in the 50's, and the building was then converted to a Dominion Grocery Store. Gord
Les Sorry for the delay. This boy would have gone to the school at the corner of Fifth and Verdun Ave. Also I went to St. Will. School but St Will. had classes on the top floor of that school I went to at least 5th. grade there maybe 6th. then back to St. Will. Ron.
Hi. I have been trying to put a date on it. So far i can't. Always remember the noise coming from the back of that place used to stand in the doorway and watch them work. Ron.
Dannyb,....................you must have seen this light before,..as many of us also must have been stopped at it ,.or by it,.on the way to ......Well you know .on the corner there......hahahaha...................................................................................HF&RV
Remember ,that Verdun had a lot of (what we considered old) Oldmen who played Horseshoes,.at the various parks,..and they were like almost sports icons in a way,.the fact that they were able to have a specific area of the park designated for Horseshoes,.........I maybe thinking way back t be a youngster in the parks ,.but the Horse Shoe crowd always seemed to have a place in Our Growing up.......As did all the baseball/ softball teams that played in te many parks ,.particularly Willibrord Park,....and as kids we would sit along the 1st base line ,and try to avoid being hit by foul balls,( and there were many) or we (as kids) would race over the fence ,behind the bleachers,(on 1st av side, where te fence was shorter) .......to gather up the errant foul balls,.and throw them back into the field ,so as to feel like we were also an integral part of the overall game...........hahahahaThere were many great baseball games ,.& neighbours would come from the surrounding areas to sit in the nice summer weather & enjoy a ballgame..........................meanwhile when not chasing the errant balls,.we would scour around under the bleachers ,completely invisible to the adults sitting above us,.( tey were oblivious to us kids,,,sort of a forerunner to ninja turtles.........hahahahahaha) but under those benches , us kids had our own world,..cigarette butts ,...and loose change that would be dropped,..............a whole 'nother' world under those stands........................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
hi synergize: I cannot say I saw that team in particular,.but i do recal that CFCF did ,do their best to be Community minded,.and apperantly still try to maintain a community presence to this day:That's a neat memory of Verdun you have,,,,I know we've asked in the past ( as you defiinetly, have a real recall of Verdun/Lasalle days)...but do you or your family have any old photos lying around ,from those times,...cause I'm certain many of the members here & the visitors who frequent the site ,.would really like to see some.....................and of course We'd like to Invite the rest of our membership ,to share a story or photos ,from days gone by too:It's all appreciated...................and for those who are not members of Verdun connections ,.but like to read the site or just check in,.Why don't you join up,.and share your Verdun / Montreal stories,.& of course Photographs,..........that's what were here for,.Come on In.............Have Fun & of course Remember Verdun.......you just might make a VerdunConnection too........How Cool is that..............hf&rv
Well it looks like those pics didn't last long ,they all have disappeared ,too bad they were neat old Verdunshots,.....I'll try and save them a different way,.it seems a direct hotlink isn't working,...........................Sorry about that HF&RV
Here's a couple for now,......... These two gals are identified as Margaret Findlay & Gloria Valentine,..........................I will get those other pictures back and post them later on, just too tired right now ,after losing all those first posts,........hahahahaha Oh Well ,I meant well hahahahaha HF&RV
Ok here's afew more Verdun Photos from a while back,Since the photo's in post #499 ( the previous one to this) did stay visible ,I'll put a few more in...too bad the 4 messages before these had the dreaded white box with the red x in them,.but an empty post isn't terribly handy,........hahahaha ,..these were tagged as 'Moving Day' ...walking right along Lasalle Blvd in front of the old Verdun Tennis Club looks like a rainy day ,( always fun when your moving ) especially from a 2nd or 3rd floor ,carrying one of those old Fridges with the round corners down a winding staircase...............Yikes..... at least the move in these photo's have wagons............ HF&RV(ps: save these photos incase they disappear)
Remembeer Tousignant's ,..here's the store window,....Looks like a sale on Heinz ketchup,.........( that's a lot of cans of ketchup) I doubt there's even too many 'can openers' around anymore,.......bet we all cut our hands on one of those lids at some point or other,.......hahahahaha.................................................have fun & remember Verdun
Finding something to do,during summer holidays was never a problem for us ,as kids in Verdun...... especially swimming,...the crowds would gather at the Natatorium in big numbers,.and Remember they used to put on Diving Shows, and swimming instruction,..and also di poolside exercises.....seems the City was into keeping all the kids occupied & offered a reasonable way to keep everyone exercising too ! Remember every park had 'monitors' and they would help organise all the kids into having stuff to do....... from the parks to the pools & the rinks ,They had stuff for us to do ....no video Games keeping us chained to a couch or mp3 players with ear buds stuck in our ears,...an aside from all te parks ,All us kids all over teh city ,always could put together a game of baseball, hockey, football, etc etc ,.where all the kids were welcome from big to small,.they all played...................many a summer day ,was spent here: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Here's some more photos from the old Natatorium,......everyone participating & having a ball ...........Exercising before swimming,...........and checkout all the kids ,right into it:This pool was well used ,look at the crowds on the roof as well as in the pool Have Fun and Remember Verdun
A few more old photos from the Natatorium days............( save 'em ,cause you never know when tey will not be available (or just disappear) Email some to friends and share them ............................................Just waiting for those doors to open...................Yahoo !!!!...........I doubt you'd have an easy time these days trying to find this many kids actually exercising,...............................................HF&RV
Hey checkout the 'logo' on the building from this picture from the previous post:How's that for the original "VC" hangout ..Now we have a new Verdun Connection s ,.spot............... a strange coincidence indeed, Have Fun & Remember Verdun,
Thanks Sandy (onesmac) ........I think your right about it costing a quarter, but We also used to get a Pass from school I think,.Here's an example of one that was initially posted by MaggieMck (our fearless leader) 1968 issue,................ a neat old keepsake............Thanks MaggieFor many of Our newer members from the last couple of years ,I would recommend going through all the available photo albums that a lot of our members have shared here,.............There's some great stuff hanging around in there. and We would Welcome everyone to post some more of their old Verdun / Montreal growing up photo's .they would always be appreciated..............................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
On your Mark, ....Get Set .................Go...............and Here's some of the volunteers, who dedicated their time ,to watch over all of us....................................Life Guards ,who we mostly thought were there to tell us kids ,..not to Run ,.............not to Dive off the lamp in the small pool,.....or not to jump off the boards (onto) our friends heads............hahahahhaa Oh Yea , & to swim to the laddres & not to the side ,to beat the rush back to the boards: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hey Sandra, yeah it was a quarter to get in. I used to spend many a summer day there also, and then go upstairs for the best grilled hot dog ever. But I guess anything would taste good to a kid after spending all day in the pool. Did Bob ever find those entries about my brother? Wendy
hi Wendy I never had the hot dogs up there but I would always buy the potato chips. I recall the name was something like laurentian. Great chips. I can still hear the sound of that turn stile you had to go through and that creepy, disinfectant water you had to walk through going in and out of the pool. Bob, I'm afraid did not find any of the letters or stories from his website. It's really too bad. But just know that everyone had great comments about him. Sandra
Yup recall these pics too,.....but I think it may have been an old member MPU who took these,?????? I'm not sure I have seen them, but can't recall exactly when or where.........Hope you've got lot's of storage space,as it is always annoying ,when these great old pics disappear from the the thread, too bad we don't get unlimited storage on these MSN sites, so they don't have to be deleted later, when in need of storage,.......I'm still working on better ways to get around those MSN rules,.I don't really see why they don't just allow everyone to 'copy & paste' pictures & articles ,and leave them visible..forever..........what's the diff , really: hf&rv
Always thinking of the old stompin grounds,.................how 'bout chew' hahahahahhahahaNo doubt about the reason it's called the boardwalk.............................................HV&RV
Verdun packs a lot of history, and I hope we can locate a lot more old photographs ...........so have a look around ,in all those old familiar hiding spots & see if you or your parents have some neat old Verdun ? Montreal mementos to share with us...............all pictures & input ,are always appreciated......................................................................................Still a pretty cool photo, when you can see the old church at Wellington & Church from what was 'soon to be' the 'inside' of the old Auditorium Cool Shot isn't it....................................................well not yet with no ice.........................................................................................................HF&RV
That's a neat shot of the inside of the Auditorium. My grandfather was the foreman on that construction project, and I think also was involved with the Nat construction too. His name was Edward Hyde. Ended up losing both legs to gangrene due to severe frostbite from working on winter construction sites! Pam Hyde
Hello Pam ,.that's neat history ,.I will post some other pictures of it's construction ,.maybe you will see your grandfather,.what a great legacy to be associated with those two projects,a lot of kids & adults alike would like to thank him for doing such a good job & providing all us Verdunners ( ites) such great places to enjoy...................................HF&RV
Here you go Pam ,these pictures were initially posted by Stephen Christophe a few years back,.they are neat old photos for sure,,,,,,...............lok how close to the riverbank they were,.that's a lot of landfill to get the amount of land they have now behind the old Auditorium,as kids we played all around that area ,the city dump made a nice playground for us kids,we got to see all the 'wildlife' .........hahahahah Rats,...........and in the Winter they dumped all the snow there, and we built snow forts .......very dangerous when I think of it now,,,,,,,Yikes !!! Danny B Remember those forts,.also KenCM too,....a good place to smoke cigarettes,,,,, HF&RV
Les, Great photos of the Nat ! Brings back many memories, especially one that I recall, where my babysitter from 3rd ave took us to the Nat, the water was over my head in the small pool, and Winston Tamahat pushed me in, there I was, gasping for breath....the babysitter pulled me out, so if your reading this Winston "I OWE YA' ONE" ....hahahahaha..the best part of the Nat were the laurentian potatoe chips at 5cents a bag..unfortunately we only had enough money for 2 bags in those days...hummmm... musta' been around 1947-48..not sure tho' .....cookie
The bottom of this picture, gives credit to the company, that took this aerial photo,.but at the end of the credit ,it says Grand Mere,Quebec.....( I think they are referring to the whereabouts of the company)because that photo looks like an aerial of Church Avenue & Wellington,....What do You Think??..Have Fun & Remember Verdun................................................................................................................!!!
Les. I think you are correct. I am looking for ST. Clement's Church or am I one street out? Is that not ST.Willibrord School to the top left? Does it give a year? Ron.
Hi Ron I think it said 1925 ish.......... I've zoomed in as close as I can before the picture distorts too much,..and I'm certain that it is Verdun,......I can make out to the left a bit the sheds I used play in,...and the Richard School on Galt can be made out as well ......(sort of) ...JMH went to that school so he may recognise it better..... HF&RV
St, Clement's would be just off the pic as it is on the corner of Wellington and Gordon. If you travel down Church Ave (toward the river) On the first corner, wouldn't that be the old Fire Station/City Hall on the corner of Ross?
Les. and Maggie. I am starting to figure it out . Those houses behind St.Will. with the shining roofs my aunt lived in one of them they had attics and the roof was quite steep. You can see the vacant lot where the YMCA would be built. Ron.
Great memories and wonderful pictures of Verdun. I thought the chips on the roof of the Nat were called Laurentian but I wasn't sure until now. They were the best chips.
Your right Maggie the Church is just slightly out of the picture(StClements that is) ..........another thing have a look StWillibrords school doesn't have the St Willibrord grade school building built yet,.just the high school mwhich I imagine doubled as a grade school too?because the other building would have been immediately on the corner of Rielle & Wellington,......Maggie there seems to be a billboard (painted on a wall) up near where your mentioning the old Fire Station on Church,.I'll go back & try to zoom in and see if I can read what it says: HF&RV
Here are some historical Photos of Grand Mere,Quebec. Maybe one with more patience than I could discern proof the previous picture is of Verdun. I think it is Verdun. Bill
Hi Bill ( biking) ..... We are almost positive that it 'is defiently Verdun,I would say there is no question,.but the compnay that took the photo was based out of Grand Mere.......... sort of misleading signature on the picture,..but you can see how easy it is for people to be misinformed when we find old books or pictures that say one thing,.but not be accurate. We've already uncovered many examples over the years of 'documented' mistakes by Library's & Museums................... Oh well that's what makes it interesting when we all disect a photo & figure it out together..........Sort of like 'CSI VERDUN' ............forensic photo identification......hahahahahaha hf&rv
I'll bet most of you will Remember this place,......Checkout the motorcycle on the corner,.I wonder if that's one of Our Verdun Cionnection members' or their friends bike.....? HF&RV
Les Right across the street there is Dunkin Donuts now...before that we got caught on Victoria Day on the roof when my friends dad tossed some firecrackers at a guy standing in Steinberg's across the street..nice he was undercover cop looking for idiots doing just that..man the best was when he bounced one off the roof of the cop car that pulled up...the sound on the metal..anyways they were not happy. We could not see the car just heard it..want to talk about guys getting down fast...Cops gave us a talk and told us to get lost....ah youth ........ Great photos Les Lad
Now this picture says "Verdun".............all the clothes on the line, and the CKVL Tower in the background...........(it's hard to find a shot of just the Tower for some reason...I guess I just haven't come across a real good one yetthis is after I left ,because I don't Remember too many iron staircases,.and no sheds to be seen either....................I would think there must be in the SHGV archives somewhere some photos of them dismantling the Tower & taking it down....someone must have taken something like that????? hf&rv
Can anyone pinpoint this location? the phone number on the garage wallis 769-1931 should be easy to find:..................................................................have fun & remember Verdun
these next three pictures are of the residences immediately behind the big Church & Church & Welliington NotreDame des Sept Douleurs ( I think that's the name)If I'm not mistaken, I think that that Pontiac Station Wagon was owned & used by the Priests or the brothers to get around in ???? There was also a 'shortcut' over to Church Avenue from Galt,.that involved a couple of fences to climb & one convient fence that had a couple of boards missing,...so we could get over to Church Avenue, and go into the 'Record' store right besid e old lady Macklehearns Florist Shop. There was also a Hobby Store there where we could get models to build...etc etc ......hf&rv..of course the Record Store just wasn't the same as Buckley's on Wellington
This is the first 'old folks home' as we called it then,,,,,,,,,,,,but as I draw nearer to the reality of one day finding myself in one,.....I will call it a 'Retirement Home'.......................hahahahahahright at the head of Woodland Av,.but up on the boardwalk side:.......................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun...................................
How about these old shacks ..Remember along the riverbank,.all the little shacks?????? ...................................................................................................................hf&rv
Delightful Country Cottage style duplex Located on one of the most beautiful avenues in Verdun Just a few blocks from Montreal Metro, bicycle paths, and Saint Lawrence River Features include cozy, cast-iron, high-efficiency, wood stove, in dutch ceramic hearth Original hardwood floors throughout $367,000 (Can.) Two address's on DesMarchais Blvd for $367. asking price ,doesn't sound like a bad deal.........the rent for both of them would most likely service your mortgage..depending on some variables........ It doesn't sound expensive given the prices we've seen bounced around in the past,.... Good Luck , Have Fun & Remember Verdun (might be a good B&B)
Les in picture 545 I see the shacks and some boats but where is the embankment up to the boardwalk? My neighbour's boat was tied up at the small boat marina below 6th Avenue (?) I think, and each boat owner had a storage shed by their boat. Incredible photos. Thanks. Bill (Second Avenue).
Hi Les.....That (Old folks home) at Woodland & the Boardwalk I believe is called The Manor, or something like that....I had an uncle in that home during the late '60s or early 70's. As for the photos of the ever-popular clothes lines, geez...I can still see the frozen clothes in the winter on those lines, and remember when your Maw brought the frozen clothes inside and strung them up to thaw across the kitchen....hahahaha.........what memories!! cookie
Yup Cookie I Remember many a 'Frozen pair of Jeans standing in front of the hall furnace..................hahahahahah and clothes strung all down the hallway & kitchen.............I got the job many times (more like a'Directive' than a job) to bring in the clothes from the line ,that's always fun, frozen hands and trying to take those friggin clothespins off without breaking them apart....................hahahahahaha My sisters did it in the better weather, HF&RV
Hi Bill (biking) ,.....that photo isn't the greatest quality,so it is hard to make out the access points to the sheds,.but if you look at the far end of the photo you can see the building that would have been the entrance to LeBlanc down near (was it) 2nd or 1st avenue on the boardwalk..............I was happy just to find that photo, but I will keep looking for better ones,& I'll be sure to post them when possible............................... HF&RV
Hi Les, Yes the sheds along the river. I left Verdun such a long time ago and I was fairly young so my memory of places are limited. I really love all the pictures and comments here and I'm seeing more of Verdun and the surrounding areas than I ever knew of. Thanks everyone. Keep the pictures coming. smac
I just came across these pictures that I took when visiting Verdun in the 80's I guess it was............ Here's the breakdown,.....(sorry I had scanned these all at once it seems, and they have been sitting on the hard drive for years now)Anyway Top Photo ,pretty easy ,That's Rex's Pizza PLace at 3rd av & Wellington ,.......Second Photo is on Wellington St facing 4th avenue ,look at the Horse Meat Butcher Shop on the right hand side,......many people never realised we could buy horsemeat ,..and many of us probably had them for hamburgers,& never knew it...... Naaaay hahahahahaand the Bottom Photo is taken from the corner of Rielle & Verdun Avenue looking towards the old Guardian/Messanger newspaper office, which later became Mackassey's when he moved from near Egan...... I lived in the center building last door 2nd floor ......the Maisonette's lived closer to the apartment bldg ,only two doors up their stairs for they lived on the 2nd floorr,,,( for anyone who might know them)..... HF&RV
This is a little before my time (ok a lot) but it's listed as a Dance at the 'Y' in Verdun,...maybe some of Our parents or friends of Our Parents maybe in those photo's ...that would be neat if someone did recognise some of them:
Les The pictures you posted..looking at the car crossing Wellington looks like AMC Javelin wondering if anyone can help me that one..I can't figure out where that shot of the clothesline is...and the one of Rielle and Verdun I lived on the top of the corner bldg.looked onto the lane facing Gordon.. Lad
Now I don't remember ever seeing this place in Verdun, but it's apperently on Troy Av........ ......... Now that's weird stuff,........I wonder if it's still like that?English: House at 75-81 Troy Ave with swastika brickwork, Verdun. Montreal, Canada. Français : l'immeuble situé au 75-81, rue Troy à Verdun. L'emblème du parti nazi, le svastika, est gravé dans la brique de la façade. Montréal (Canada ............Anyone ever see this building before ( I don't think I have).................................. HF&RV
The building looks oriental. The swastika symbol could be a reference to Buddhism or Hinduism. Many flats in Verdun were constructed long before WW2 so it may have nothing to do with Nazism. Bill (feeling better)
Good Sunday morning, Everyone, This is a mirrored (reversed) image of the swastika as we know it. Bill is correct about it's Eastern origin. Wikipedia has an extensive writeup on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika Thanks, Les and Guy, for all the old photos. We really appreciate it. Warmest regards, dear members, Jack P.S. Glad you're feeling better, Bill.
Good Afternoon from F lorida! Ahh, those YMCA Dance pics bring back some memories! They do look a little before my dancing daze! I'd say early 40's. I remember wondering why the Gals danced together when I was available! My friend and I used to ask the 'wallflowers' (sitting along the wall) for a dance and got turned down by so many. (We were handsome DUDES too!) Ha! The young folks dance a little differently today and dress quite different too! Times have changed, but not the 'pursuit!' Good job Les! Victah
There used to be a TV personality in Los Angeles in the 60s who knew the city probably more than anyone. I thought it was Johnny Grant -- the 'Mayor of Hollywood'. Who ever it was he had a weekly show where he found unusual places overlooked by the citizens of LA. These long forgotten buildings, bridges, canals, partially buried street car tracks etc., had really interesting and historical significance. I think Montreal has much more historical stories to tell and has the talent and the know how to produce such a TV show. I bet that building on Troy Avenue could tell a fantastic story. Who had it constructed and why this unusual design? There might be a long forgotten fantastic story there. Second Avenue alone had it's share of sagas. Just a thought. Bill Bill (Second Avenue)
I found that TV personality. His name is Ralph Story and the show was called Ralph Story's Los Angeles. It ran through the 60s. I remember one episode was all about the LA cable cars which are long gone. Anyway lets have a Montreal or even a Verdun show. Just a thought. Bill
...................and now for something completely different........... but only a short while back Remember this Verdun? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtvThcdemGM How about those neatly shovelled out parking spaces, only to have someone get your spot before you got back............hahahahahaha HF&RV
Sorry folks , I guess I have to hack that one again, as I've been able to post these exact shots in the past,...........leave it with me , I'll figure it out......sorry 'bout the littel white box with the red X.................happens sometimes HF&RV
A familiar Verdun site,....albeit on a 'chillier' day....Not that we didn't experience enough of those old Winter days.....although when I lived on Wellington back prior to 1968, there were no traffic lights at Galt,..and Church Av was a two-way street back then too.I'm surprised at how little traffic is actually on Wellington in this photo. HF&RV
and another familiar area, most of us would be familiar with,.....Woodland & Wellington / Lasalle ,.and here's an old streetcar the #58 Wellington making it's turn around the little transfer park spot,.......HF&RV
Yes! I remember that well! It only happened once! When I arrived home from a trip to a store to get something, someone took my well shovelled space that had taken about an hour to clear. I dug out another space next to it and buried that car with the snow I shovelled. My space never got taken again! Memories of Verdun!

Still summer weather happenning ,but Remember this view, many of us have experienced a shot like this,it's only a couple of months way before this type of weather starts appearing in the old stomping grounds.........................Remember the slush at every corner & trying to jump over the puddle, and always being on guard for the ever present 'friendly' motorist who tries to splash everyone........hahahaha HF&RV
Now that is a perfect example of a slushy day! I blew the picture up to get a better view of the street. Wear your billy boots. It's a keeper. Bill (Second Avenue)
How about this place they called Willibrord Park, long before it even had the Monument in it........but it did have cannons....................also no City Hall as of yet................................................HF&RV
Also in this Willibrord Park photo ( the one in front of the city hall,as we know it) It looks like there is a stop sign right at the corner ,& that would mean that Willibrord was a two way street at one time,............As were the avenues also two way at one time ( before my memory,)...............................................................................HF&RV the previous posts here, showing the laying of the corner stone for the bandshell at Woodland Park, is marked 1938 AD. so I would guess that this shot of Willibrord PAk is toughly from the same era,......I think one of our members did mention that at one time he remembered 4th or 5th av as being two ways. Anyone Remember this ?? HF&RV
Hi Les: I lived on Second Avenue from 1944 to around 1956 and it was a two-way street for most of that time. I can not remember when the Avenues were switched to one way but it seems around 1957.???? George
Thanks George , the only two way I recall was Church Avenue,Woodland, & a couple of others I think Hickson was still a two way for a while,...& I'm not certain but I have a vague recollection og Galt being two way..(but I'm only guessing on that one) HF&RV
I should have added in the previous post,.that the familiar sound before leaving the house when I was a kid,.was "Make sure you look both ways when you cross the street".......of course I lived on Wellington then,.so that was a given, but I'm still here, so it must have sunk in........hahahaha HF&RV
Yes , that is the picture I was thinking of ,when I mentioned some members here had said they recalled two way streets on the avs,......obviously this shot is from an earlier era, like the 30's as the vehicles shown aren't very newish............No mistakning that Church up there on Verdun Av,.either.................Thaks for the post HF&RV
Those mattress's don't take up much room when you roll them like that.....Yikes,........ A PosturePedic it is not..........hahahahaha Remember moving in Verdun, and carrying floppy old beds like that,.and then of course it was always nice to move the old round cornered refrigerators up those winding staircases.............and as I recall everyone lived on the 2nd floor minimum,..noone ever seemed to move into an easy bottom flat.......hahahahaha HF&RV
Oh ya. I remember this picture. During my preteen years, 1940s, there were very few cars on 2nd Ave. There might have been maybe 4 cars parked between Wellington and Verdun, and very little traffic. Safe street for kids to slap shot a raggedy tennis ball. My family never owned a car btw, and obviously most no one else did either. We walked everywhere, up hill both ways and we liked it (grumpy old man SNL). Bill (Second Avenue)

Regarding Vincent Price, I thought he played a good role as a ladies man in 'Laura' 1944 with Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews. I bought a copy of this classic film noir and watch it from time to time.
Bill
I forgot just how lovely Gene Tierney was as the above photo shows. Just in case the younger members wouldn't recognize her.

Check out this bridge ,it looks almost identical to Our 4th avenue 'rainbow' bridge in Verdun ..........althought this one is somewhere along the Historique Route 66......... ...you know ,where you can get your kicks....... A few of us have been in this restaurant I guess,.Although I was more familiar with the many Wellington Street Restaurants, & 2nd avenue & Verdun restaurant,. .look at the arrow direction sign,(for the street direction) it looks like you can see through it.as the 'e' in Verdun can be seen through the direction sign...................................................... Hi, It sure looks like a prison, glad that this had changed and now it looks great, also with no fence around the premises
douglas had a very bad reputation in 60,s and 70,s, presently it is the top mental health facility in canada. i started to work as a candy striper in 1960, after furthering my education and some 8 yrs later i decided to return to behavior theraphy there. no regrets. carolyn bennett to think that 2 scottish lords james douglas, william perry started all this.

Verdun,.Wellington taken looking towards Downtown, from Church & Wellington (roughly)....... btwn Church & Galt .This must be near that bookstore ,that was mentioned??? Amazing how close Verdun really was to Downtown,.yet we thought we were heading out on a great adventure as kids, when boarding the Bus & heading for Centre Ville........................................ it's all about perception. ............and of course we've seen this one before too,.....but always neat to see the old stomping grounds & familiar landmarks hf&rv
the Jolicour Metro Station,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but look to the right,.and the old 4th av bridge ,with it's familiar arch's ......that's a big metro station,.......I seem to Remember seeing the Angrion station,.and it too seemed big.............don't Remember them being there yet ,when I left LaBelle Province,......but maybe they were ,as I watched the Verdun Metro (Galt Av ,on the old Greenberg's property)..then Greenberg's moved diagonally across the street to the corner of Gordon & Wellington, Anyone know when the metro continued on to Angrion.....??? (it may have been built while I was there, but I don't think so ( mid-70's??) hf&rv
Les Guessing Metro was around 1980 or just after...been so long take it for granted..The original line is 40 and then they added the blue line runs near U of M...that would be maybe within last 15 or 20 yrs..I think. Lad

Look at the tire tracks in the snow,.Rememeber walking over those ruts,.or scurrying up the side of a snowbank in each side of the cross lanes,..to get out of the way of the Oil Truck,.......or Garbage Truck etc etc ....that does look like pretty good snow for snowballs,.......Remember making up a whole whack of snowballs & then bombarding some unsuspecting Bus, hahahahahahaha have fun and Remember Verdun
Guy do you know of this beer with that house on the label. Has anyone tried it,.is it any good? the write up says it's a VerdunBeer Here's some info on it: 2000 (?)
Cette bi챔re a 챕t챕 cr챕챕 en collaboration avec Jean-Fran챌ois Joannette, un Verdunois passionn챕 de bi챔re, et la microbrasserie Charlevoix.

'Fin du Monde' is one of the names,....and they had several others,.........didn't much care for it either .but I will try the Verdun one,...................somebody send me out a 'truckload' will ya,..........afterall I'd have to give it a fair chance............hahahahaha hf&rv
Here's the old StWillibrord's school,.both the grade school,.and the second photo is the HighSchool ....and a parade of sorts in the schoolyard off Willibrord........................hf&rv
Guy
Hello Guy ,.i trust you & your family are enjoying the holidays: Here's another photo I took many years ago, when the school on Galt (which too is now condos) but it was at 200 Galt I beleive ( as my sister in law lived across from it at 199 Galt).....I understood this to be the school ( or at least one of them ) that JMH attended ) Ecole Richard ??? I used to skate on the rink that the French Brothers would put up every winter,.......... ...................I also am trying to post another photo that I took from my front gallery in the early 70's on Lasalle Blvd ( in Lasalle) I think it was the Knights of Columbus or something like that,...directly across from me was a nice view of the rapids,.and what is now a bird sanctuary, using the filled in area of the old Powerhouse: I hope these pictures show up Ok, ...............You can see a Cross in the yard behind the tree,I think it also had a rosary hanging on it,.............. Do you Remember the correct name of this organization,? I thought it was the Knights of Something ,...or Kinsmen,.??? Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, Your photos did not show up. Guy

Hi there ! re: http://groups.msn.com/VerdunConnections/verduntrivia.msnw?action=get_message&mview=1&ID_Message=51709 Someone knows the intersection ? Make, model and year of MTC bus 4360 ? JM
Yes...Muirs is now in Maxville Ontario...just a short drive of an hour and a bit. They make great Haggis pies and still have the traditional Bridies and meat pies . I was there in October and was sure to pick up all of the above and some black pudding as well ( yes it is really blood pudding ) I am of scottish blood , what can I say...I like the stuff !
Hello Donna , I can't Remember the last time I even thought of Blood Pudding./...........I know I did like it at some point,.but also recall having made a decision at some point ,that I just didn't buy it anymore ( well over 35 plus years ago,..i don't even think I've ever seen it again since leaving Labelle Province decades ago,...............but that sure is a memory prompt , ............................................................................................................HF&RV
That's too bad because it really does taste good. Where are you living now ?
Victoria BC ,.on Vancouver Island,.................. So Best Regards from Canada's Westcoast..................................HF&RV I will now make a point of seeing if the stores around here carry it ,.. I think my 87 yr old Mother likes the stuff too......
Mazda with am/fm as standard equipment ( a big deal in those days ...hahaha),...it was a little red 4door ( I think?) I Remember asking Mr Muir if I could have an Apple Turnover ,which had just come out of the oven,...and his answer to me was ,.Les ,you have whatever you want ,because in two weeks ,you won't want any of these goods,( a Wise Man Mr Muir,.cause He was right,......and to this day ,although I do like sweet stuff,.I rarely have any)........hahahahaha but We would still eat the Meat Pies ,when they came out of the oven,& have ketchup with them.,...........mmmmmm they were the best: All good memory's .....................................HF&RV as far as being Connected to this site,......I guess you could say that, many of us participated almost right from the beginnning & went through many growing pains,of MSN & other minor bumps,..but here it is 5 years later, and the site is still growing ,and we appreciate all the effort & input from everyone ,who likes to relay Verdun/Montreal type story's & memories & pictures of course:..................So Thanks to MaggieMck,.....I have been able to enjoy (for the most part) many Stories & Memories of Verdun,.from many different people ,I would most likely never have met,....also came across some old friends from school daze ,etc etc ............I Hope you come across ,some old familiar faces,& also Have Fun & Remember Verdun, I think I found this site, while surfing for Verdun stuff,..and came across it within days of it's inception,The rest my Verdun Friend ,is History......hahaha

Were you planning a party? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahah Please allow me to introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
cause Im in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or Ill lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, whats my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, whats my name
I tell you one time, youre to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who

Les...I am knackered, going to bed, it was nice chatting with you
Ok ,.but Donna you still haven't revealed if your 'planning a party'.........hahahahaha Glad you like the song(lyrics in this case)...... but hey I can fix that for you,.(since it's your favourite Stones song,) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNHkOryXosI ...............crank it up & have a listen,.see can't say I never gave you anything. hahahahahaha ( Donna I already have this song,.so a Rolex or a Lexus, wouldn't be bad for a change................................hahahahah) I was going to post this link (for the song) but it's the version where the Angels over stepped their boundary's & ruined an otherwise soon to be good concert...............................Yikes !!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY6yYAlueUM at least Mic was trying to stop the stupidity,....Enjoy the first Vid,........... and enjoy your 40's evry year ,above ground ,is a good year,. if your on the right side of the lawn,.then things must be ,not too bad: HF&RV
Hi Lad !
VerduReader posted this picture last August,.......still looks weird to not see the old familiar radio station CKVL,................ ............I guess much of the many things we were familiar with, has disappeared,...........some for the better, some perhaps not? They have made the waterfront really nice ,and a few other things,I guess,.but Hard to think of Verdun without the Stadium,.........or many of the Granite Pillars & railings from the boardwalk,...the old Firetruck in the Park behind the Police/FireStation,./......the Police/FireStation for that matter....
Ron.
Can you name these?
Dannyb,....................you must have seen this light before,.. as many of us also must have been stopped at it ,.or by it,.on the way to ......Well you know .on the corner there......hahahaha ...................................................................................HF&RV
Remember ,that Verdun had a lot of (what we considered old) Oldmen who played Horseshoes,.at the various parks,..and they were like almost sports icons in a way,.the fact that they were able to have a specific area of the park designated for Horseshoes,.........I maybe thinking way back t be a youngster in the parks ,.but the Horse Shoe crowd always seemed to have a place in Our Growing up.......As did all the baseball/ softball teams that played in te many parks ,.particularly Willibrord Park,....and as kids we would sit along the 1st base line ,and try to avoid being hit by foul balls,( and there were many) or we (as kids) would race over the fence ,behind the bleachers,(on 1st av side, where te fence was shorter) .......to gather up the errant foul balls,.and throw them back into the field ,so as to feel like we were also an integral part of the overall game...........hahahaha There were many great baseball games ,.& neighbours would come from the surrounding areas to sit in the nice summer weather & enjoy a ballgame..........................meanwhile when not chasing the errant balls,.we would scour around under the bleachers ,completely invisible to the adults sitting above us,.( tey were oblivious to us kids,,,sort of a forerunner to ninja turtles.........hahahahahaha) but under those benches , us kids had our own world,..cigarette butts ,...and loose change that would be dropped,..............a whole 'nother' world under those stands........................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
hi synergize: I cannot say I saw that team in particular,.but i do recal that CFCF did ,do their best to be Community minded,.and apperantly still try to maintain a community presence to this day: That's a neat memory of Verdun you have,,,,I know we've asked in the past ( as you defiinetly, have a real recall of Verdun/Lasalle days)...but do you or your family have any old photos lying around ,from those times,...cause I'm certain many of the members here & the visitors who frequent the site ,.would really like to see some............ .........and of course We'd like to Invite the rest of our membership ,to share a story or photos ,from days gone by too: It's all appreciated...................and for those who are not members of Verdun connections ,.but like to read the site or just check in,.Why don't you join up,.and share your Verdun / Montreal stories,.& of course Photographs,..........that's what were here for,.Come on In.............Have Fun & of course Remember Verdun.......you just might make a VerdunConnection too........How Cool is that..............hf&rv

Remember every park had 'monitors' and they would help organise all the kids into having stuff to do....... from the parks to the pools & the rinks ,They had stuff for us to do ....no video Games keeping us chained to a couch or mp3 players with ear buds stuck in our ears,...an aside from all te parks ,All us kids all over teh city ,always could put together a game of baseball, hockey, football, etc etc ,.where all the kids were welcome from big to small,.they all played............ .......many a summer day ,was spent here: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Here's some more photos from the old Natatorium,......everyone participating & having a ball ........ ...Exercising before swimming,...........and checkout all the kids ,right into it: This pool was well used ,look at the crowds on the roof as well as in the pool Have Fun and Remember Verdun

Hey checkout the 'logo' on the building from this picture from the previous post: How's that for the original "VC" hangout ..Now we have a new Verdun Connection s ,.spot............... a strange coincidence indeed, Have Fun & Remember Verdun ,
your pictures are fantastic! We lived at the Nat all summer, as long as you could find a quarter to swim. I think that's what we paid ?
sandra
Thanks Sandy (onesmac) ........I think your right about it costing a quarter, but We also used to get a Pass from school I think,. Here's an example of one that was initially posted by MaggieMck (our fearless leader) 1968 issue,................ a neat old keepsake............Thanks Maggie For many of Our newer members from the last couple of years ,I would recommend going through all the available photo albums that a lot of our members have shared here,.............There's some great stuff hanging around in there. and We would Welcome everyone to post some more of their old Verdun / Montreal growing up photo's .they would always be appreciated ..............................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
On your Mark, ....Get Set .................Go ...............and Here's some of the volunteers, who dedicated their time ,to watch over all of us...................... ..............Life Guards ,who we mostly thought were there to tell us kids ,..not to Run ,.............not to Dive off the lamp in the small pool,.....or not to jump off the boards (onto) our friends heads............hahahahhaa Oh Yea , & to swim to the laddres & not to the side ,to beat the rush back to the boards: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hey Sandra, yeah it was a quarter to get in. I used to spend many a summer day there also, and then go upstairs for the best grilled hot dog ever. But I guess anything would taste good to a kid after spending all day in the pool. Did Bob ever find those entries about my brother? Wendy
Yup Toasted Hotdogs ,................................................................Good Stuff !@! havefunandrememberverdun
hi Wendy
I never had the hot dogs up there but I would always buy the potato chips.
I'm not sure I have seen them, but can't recall exactly when or where.........Hope you've got lot's of storage space,as it is always annoying ,when these great old pics disappear from the the thread, too bad we don't get unlimited storage on these MSN sites, so they don't have to be deleted later, when in need of storage,....... I'm still working on better ways to get around those MSN rules,.I don't really see why they don't just allow everyone to 'copy & paste' pictures & articles ,and leave them visible..forever..........what's the diff , really: hf&rv
Always thinking of the old stompin grounds,.................how 'bout chew' hahahahahhahaha No doubt about the reason it's called the boardwalk.............................................HV&RV
Verdun packs a lot of history, and I hope we can locate a lot more old photographs ...........so have a look around ,in all those old familiar hiding spots & see if you or your parents have some neat old Verdun ? Montreal mementos to share with us...............all pictures & input ,are always appreciated...................................................................................... Still a pretty cool photo, when you can see the old church at Wellington & Church from what was 'soon to be' the 'inside' of the old Auditorium Cool Shot isn't it....................................................well not yet with no ice.........................................................................................................HF&RV
Those pictures were taken by my brother Tom.and he e-mailed them to me.Here is one of Tom infront of 5515 Wellington.
Here you go Pam ,these pictures were initially posted by Stephen Christophe a few years back,.they are neat old photos for sure,,,,,, ...............lok how close to the riverbank they were,.that's a lot of landfill to get the amount of land they have now behind the old Auditorium,as kids we played all around that area ,the city dump made a nice playground for us kids,we got to see all the 'wildlife' .........hahahahah Rats,...........and in the Winter they dumped all the snow there, and we built snow forts .......very dangerous when I think of it now,,,,,,,Yikes !!! Danny B Remember those forts,.also KenCM too,....a good place to smoke cigarettes,,,,, HF&RV
Now ( as promised) the construction photos of the Natatorium too : Have Fun and Remember Verdun,..................
Les, Great photos of the Nat ! Brings back many memories, especially one that I recall, where my babysitter from 3rd ave took us to the Nat, the water was over my head in the small pool, and Winston Tamahat pushed me in, there I was, gasping for breath....the babysitter pulled me out, so if your reading this Winston "I OWE YA' ONE" ....hahahahaha..the best part of the Nat were the laurentian potatoe chips at 5cents a bag..unfortunately we only had enough money for 2 bags in those days...hummmm... musta' been around 1947-48..not sure tho' ..... cookie
Remember the line-ups ,and then going through that metal turnstyle.............................................. HF&RV
The bottom of this picture, gives credit to the company, that took this aerial photo,.but at the end of the credit ,it says Grand Mere,Quebec.....( I think they are referring to the whereabouts of the company) because that photo looks like an aerial of Church Avenue & Wellington,....What do You Think?? ..Have Fun & Remember Verdun................................................................................................................!!!
Les. I think you are correct. I am looking for ST. Clement's Church or am I one street out? Is that not ST.Willibrord School to the top left? Does it give a year? Ron.
Here is an old Pic.
Hope it works It is about time I get it correct Ron.
Attachment: Verdun St. Clement's Church old.jpg
Your right Maggie the Church is just slightly out of the picture(StClements that is) .......... another thing have a look StWillibrords school doesn't have the St Willibrord grade school building built yet,.just the high school mwhich I imagine doubled as a grade school too? because the other building would have been immediately on the corner of Rielle & Wellington,...... Maggie there seems to be a billboard (painted on a wall) up near where your mentioning the old Fire Station on Church,.I'll go back & try to zoom in and see if I can read what it says: HF&RV
Here are some historical Photos of Grand Mere,Quebec. Maybe one with
more patience than I could discern proof the previous picture is of
Verdun. I think it is Verdun.

We are almost positive that it 'is defiently Verdun, I would say there is no question,.but the compnay that took the photo was based out of Grand Mere.......... sort of misleading signature on the picture,..but you can see how easy it is for people to be misinformed when we find old books or pictures that say one thing,.but not be accurate. We've already uncovered many examples over the years of 'documented' mistakes by Library's & Museums................... Oh well that's what makes it interesting when we all disect a photo & figure it out together.......... Sort of like 'CSI VERDUN' ............forensic photo identification......hahahahahaha hf&rv
I'll bet most of you will Remember this place,...... Checkout the motorcycle on the corner,.I wonder if that's one of Our Verdun Cionnection members' or their friends bike.....? HF&RV
a few people part of the Wolfe-Cycle club: ......looks like the picture may have been taken on DesMarchais.....??? Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Great photos Les Lad
laurentide chips, there ya go mello roll ice cream carolyn bennett
recognise these pictures? .....too easy ? hf&rv
Now this picture says "Verdun".............all the clothes on the line, and the CKVL Tower in the background...........(it's hard to find a shot of just the Tower for some reason...I guess I just haven't come across a real good one yet this is after I left ,because I don't Remember too many iron staircases,.and no sheds to be seen either....................I would think there must be in the SHGV archives somewhere some photos of them dismantling the Tower & taking it down....someone must have taken something like that????? hf&rv
Can anyone pinpoint this location? the phone number on the garage wall is 769-1931 should be easy to find: ..................................................................have fun & remember Verdun
these next three pictures are of the residences immediately behind the big Church & Church & Welliington NotreDame des Sept Douleurs ( I think that's the name) If I'm not mistaken, I think that that Pontiac Station Wagon was owned & used by the Priests or the brothers to get around in ???? There was also a 'shortcut' over to Church Avenue from Galt,.that involved a couple of fences to climb & one convient fence that had a couple of boards missing,...so we could get over to Church Avenue, and go into the 'Record' store right besid e old lady Macklehearns Florist Shop. There was also a Hobby Store there where we could get models to build...etc etc ......hf&rv ..of course the Record Store just wasn't the same as Buckley's on Wellington
This is the first 'old folks home' as we called it then,,,,,,,,,,,,but as I draw nearer to the reality of one day finding myself in one,.....I will call it a 'Retirement Home'.......................hahahahahah right at the head of Woodland Av,.but up on the boardwalk side: .......................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun...................................
How about these old shacks ..Remember along the riverbank,.all the little shacks?????? ...................................................................................................................hf&rv
There were a few members who mentioned possibly investing in Verdun RealEstate,..............checkout this ad : it's for a house on Desmarchais.

$367,000 (Can.) Two address's on DesMarchais Blvd for $367. asking price ,doesn't sound like a bad deal.........the rent for both of them would most likely service your mortgage..depending on some variables........
Hi Bill (biking) ,.....that photo isn't the greatest quality,so it is hard to make out the access points to the sheds,.but if you look at the far end of the photo you can see the building that would have been the entrance to LeBlanc down near (was it) 2nd or 1st avenue on the boardwalk.............. I was happy just to find that photo, but I will keep looking for better ones,& I'll be sure to post them when possible............................... HF&RV
what year would this picture have come from?
Hi Sandy,..........which picture ,..the sheds along the river? If so I'll look it up again & post the date............... hf&rv
Hi Les,
Yes the sheds along the river. I left Verdun such a long time ago and I was fairly young so my memory of places are limited. I really love all the pictures and comments here and I'm seeing more of Verdun and the surrounding areas than I ever knew of. Thanks everyone. Keep the pictures coming.

Naaaay hahahahaha and the Bottom Photo is taken from the corner of Rielle & Verdun Avenue looking towards the old Guardian/Messanger newspaper office, which later became Mackassey's when he moved from near Egan......
Lad
Now I don't remember ever seeing this place in Verdun, but it's apperently on Troy Av........ ......... Now that's weird stuff,........I wonder if it's still like that? English: House at 75-81 Troy Ave with swastika brickwork, Verdun.
Victah
Where the heck is Troy Avenue? Is it in the west end?
Bill (Second Avenue)
Troy Avenue isn't that over by The Verdun General off of Hickson running parelle to Lasalle Blvd. Steve
http://www.mapquest.com/mapstroy+verdun+qc/ Hope this works. Ron.
Bill
Bill (Second Avenue)
I found that TV personality. His name is Ralph Story and the show was called Ralph Story's Los Angeles. It ran through the 60s. I remember one episode was all about the LA cable cars which are long gone. Anyway lets have a Montreal or even a Verdun show. Just a thought.

...................and now for something completely different........... but only a short while back Remember this Verdun? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtvThcdemGM How about those neatly shovelled out parking spaces, only to have someone get your spot before you got back............hahahahahaha HF&RV

Sorry folks , I guess I have to hack that one again, as I've been able to post these exact shots in the past,........... leave it with me , I'll figure it out......sorry 'bout the littel white box with the red X.................happens sometimes HF&RV
A familiar Verdun site,....albeit on a 'chillier' day....Not that we didn't experience enough of those old Winter days.... .although when I lived on Wellington back prior to 1968, there were no traffic lights at Galt,..and Church Av was a two-way street back then too. I'm surprised at how little traffic is actually on Wellington in this photo. HF&RV
and another familiar area, most of us would be familiar with,.....Woodland & Wellington / Lasalle ,.and here's an old streetcar the #58 Wellington making it's turn around the little transfer park spot,....... HF&RV
Les Did you ever notice that the lights are gone when you go down Verdun Street(Ave) Hickson to Atwater..Verdun St. man that bugs me.... Lad
Yes! I remember that well! It only happened once! When I arrived home from a trip to a store to get something, someone took my well shovelled space that had taken about an hour to clear. I dug out another space next to it and buried that car with the snow I shovelled. My space never got taken again! Memories of Verdun!

Is this firestation still operating ?? HF&RV
Still summer weather happenning ,but Remember this view, many of us have experienced a shot like this, it's only a couple of months way before this type of weather starts appearing in the old stomping grounds.........................Remember the slush at every corner & trying to jump over the puddle, and always being on guard for the ever present 'friendly' motorist who tries to splash everyone........hahahaha HF&RV
Now that is a perfect example of a slushy day! I blew the picture up to get a better view of the street. Wear your billy boots. It's a keeper.
Bill (Second Avenue)
Just a few more old reminders of the old place ,before this place winds down Have fun and Remember Verdun......................................is # 1
How about this place they called Willibrord Park, long before it even had the Monument in it........but it did have cannons............. .......also no City Hall as of yet................................................HF&RV
Also in this Willibrord Park photo ( the one in front of the city hall,as we know it) It looks like there is a stop sign right at the corner ,& that would mean that Willibrord was a two way street at one time,............As were the avenues also two way at one time ( before my memory,) ...............................................................................HF&RV the previous posts here, showing the laying of the corner stone for the bandshell at Woodland Park, is marked 1938 AD. so I would guess that this shot of Willibrord PAk is toughly from the same era,......I think one of our members did mention that at one time he remembered 4th or 5th av as being two ways.
I should have added in the previous post,.that the familiar sound before leaving the house when I was a kid,.was "Make sure you look both ways when you cross the street" .......of course I lived on Wellington then,.so that was a given, but I'm still here, so it must have sunk in........hahahaha HF&RV
I lived at 299 4th. (near Wellington) from 1950 to 1959 and I seem to remember that the street switched toone way in the early 50's.
Per the ATTACHED pic, it looks like it was two way at least for (real) horse powered vehicles in what seems like the late 40s to early 50s
Matt
Attachment: VERDUN - MAY MOVE - 1.jpg
Yes , that is the picture I was thinking of ,when I mentioned some members here had said they recalled two way streets on the avs,..... .obviously this shot is from an earlier era, like the 30's as the vehicles shown aren't very newish............No mistakning that Church up there on Verdun Av,.either.................Thaks for the post HF&RV
Those mattress's don't take up much room when you roll them like that..... Yikes,........ A PosturePedic it is not..........hahahahaha Remember moving in Verdun, and carrying floppy old beds like that,.and then of course it was always nice to move the old round cornered refrigerators up those winding staircases.............and as I recall everyone lived on the 2nd floor minimum,..noone ever seemed to move into an easy bottom flat....... hahahahaha HF&RV
