I wonder if anyone else remembers the cannons that used to be across from the Legion where the present city hall was latyer built. My Mother and Father had pictures taken there but I don't know where they are now. The pictures I mean not the cannons. Come to think of it, I don't know where the cannons are either. Ed

Edbro,.how ya doing ,.? I don't Remember them,.but I do know that at one time the Monument that stands across from the Legion now (in front of present day City Hall) ,.........once stood in the little triangular shaped park,.across from poisson Hall,.where Wellington Street & Lasalle Blvd meet,..& was moved to it's presemnt location,....but I seem to think that there were some 'real old time' cannons also on display in that little park,.I wonder if those are the sameones your talking about ?? Would be great if you can find some pics of those,.I wonder if in the bowels of the VerdunLegion, there aren't some good pictures of Verdun's PArks & Military History,.??? Would be well worth investigating,,,,,,,,,,,,I'll bet there's some good stuff in many buildings around Verdun ..................... I wish I could live back there ,just long enough to really explore & Appreciate more the City of Verdun..................(and Montreal)
Ed, Yes, I remember those cannons as played on them when I was a kid , after the war, late 40s. Maybe Les will come up with some pictures. This is at the corner of Verdun and Willibrord, in front of present day Verdun City Hall. Guy
I will check with the Legion maybe they some info on the cannons. Ed
By the way Les, speaking of the statue in the little triangular park. It was stolen from there and disappeared for 17 years. Someone turned it up and gave it back to the Legion or something to that effect. Ed
edbro .......I would doubt that the Monument (if this is the statue inquestion) , could have been actually stolen for 17 years,..are we speaking of the same statue..........with the soldier at the top,..and the women sitting in a throne like seat at the right hand side,.......... I' d Really Have to See something relative to that.////////// Unless your referring to a different statue,..but even nowadays it would be a serious task to even 'Lift' the Monument I'm Referring too,........ .......and I have never heard anything like that,........ .......and although a lot of my family & ancestors are Dead,.....i am quite sure i might have at least heard something abvout that.........""?? ......Do you have some sort of source ,that makes this claim.......... A World War 1 or 2 ,Monument being stolen ,let alone missing for almost two decades seems implausible.....................Are you just kidding us.......hahahah Although I did hear one time that the Montreal Forum was actually beamed up to the Starship Enterprise,..because the Captain of the Ship,.couldn't get into VHS.............Son of a B*765ch...................Jim ,.i'm a Doctor not an idiot hahahahahha
closest thing I could find on short notice is this article Stolen sculpture's head found at Ontario smelter Last Updated: Wednesday, January 3, 2007 | 7:04 AM ET CBC News Days after a two-tonne, seven-metre-high bronze statue of a famous Ukrainian poet was reported stolen from a park in Oakville, Ont., its head has turned up at a nearby smelter. The statue of Taras Shevchenko â a 19th-century artist and poet credited with establishing the modern Ukrainian literary language â was discovered missing on the weekend by two visitors to a 16-acre memorial park in North Oakville. Police believe it could have been stolen anytime between Dec. 15-31. The bronze statue of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, was discovered stolen from a memorial park in Oakville, Ont., on Dec. 31.
(Halton Regional Police Service) Andrew Gregorovich, of the Taras Shevchenko Museum that owns the statue, said he heard early Tuesday afternoon that the figure's head had been located at a smelter in Burlington, about 25 kilometres southwest of Oakville. The discovery lent credibility to theories that the statue was stolen for the value of the scrap metal. Halton Region police estimated the value of the statue at $20,000. "It's good news in a sense that we know that the head has survived but it's devastating to know that the rest of the statue was destroyed apparently," said Gregorovich, who is the vice-president and librarian of the Toronto-based museum. Theft required large equipment The statue had a base that was more than three metres high and was about seven metres high in total, Gregorovich said. It stood in the centre of the park, partially obscured by trees. That in itself is a big statue,..................................but it's not the one from Verdun....................................................................
