Johnnies on Argyle

We used to call the tiny store "Dirty Johnies" place-it was a wee candy store on Argyle near Bannantyne...it always smelled bad but Big Johnny was always great to us kids...he had Tools,Mojos,Dots (those weird strips of waxed paper with candy "dots" on them to lick off of the waxed paper) and those always gross wax cigars with koolaid in them...green leaves and black babies as they were called...none in packages...but you count get a good batch of candy for 10 cents back then in the 60's!!!Anyone remember that very small store?

how many of you took a dare to walk from bannentyne to champlain through the "dougie" (no disrespect intended to the Douglass Hospital) at midnight??? we used to do that and would sit up in the tree's waiting for some unsuspecting sap to walk through and we would jump out and scare the bee-gee-bers out of them..

..just heard that  Hawaiian Crooner,..Don Ho ,.has died...............

whem I saw the news tonight I thought ,.....(hey when did he get looking old)

......He always looked the same to me,.over many years,.......I don't know if he even sang another song,..but i Remember my parents listening to 'Tiny Bubbles'

in the 60's,....Apparently he had a waikiki tv show,....and was 76,when he died this morning,........................

The Times they sre a changing

We always had different groups ,.that may have been considered gangs of sorts,....

but these days the Montreal we Remembered is being plagued by gang mentality,and these kids are killing people:   Here's an excerpt from todays Gazette:

Five homicides and five attempted murders have been attributed to street gang activity already this year in such areas as LaSalle, Lachine and Notre Dame de Grace. Included among those numbers was the first homicide of the year, in Lachine, and the slaying of Tyler Jacobs, 16, in N.D.G.

“I think this year summer started in January. That’s why we’re here today. That’s the problem,” Brouillette said Thursday during a news conference to announce the results of a project Montreal police initiated Feb. 24.

Project OMNI is a grouping of Montreal police from neighbourhood stations and specialized units. Their goal is to stem the growing problem of street gang violence in western Montreal. 

“I’m convinced it is very preoccupying for the public. Unfortunately, some sections have been more touched than others,” Brouillette said, listing LaSalle, Lachine, Cte des Neiges and N.D.G.

It is estimated there are more than 20 street gangs that can be considered serious organized crime groups in Montreal. Brouillette said the same ones plaguing other parts of the city are present in western Montreal.

Martin Luther King & MontrealConnection?

I don't Remember ever hearing this story,.....that James Earl Ray had escaped from Prison in the states,.& fled to Montreal,...........

 

• On April 23, 1967, James Earl Ray hid in a bread truck and escaped from the maximum-security wing of the Missouri State Prison. He fled to Montreal, frequenting the Neptune Bar on de la Commune, where he claims to have befriended a shadowy figure named Raoul. To his dying day, Ray swore that Raoul hatched the plan to assassinate Martin Luther King.

Bridge Over the River Why

For Expo 67 of course:   Forty Years ago this year,they would open this bridge to get to Ile Notre Dame,.and of course to the other Expo Islands,.........

We were all in anticipation of the world coming to see the City of Montreal :

 

 

.the bridge of course was one of the first things built to accomodate the thousands of Dump trucks,.loaded with rock and fill,.that was excavated from the building of the Metro Tunnels,.........................They really were on the right track (so to speak) in the preparation & building & coordination,it took for this Mega project................a job well done:

Verdun Directions

 

Maybe it's because I have always been "directionally challenged" but descriptions of corners in Verdun often confuse me. When I look at a Google Map, it tells me that LaSalle Blvd, Wellington St., Verdun Ave., Bannantyne St. and Champlain Blvd. for the most part run South to North in Verdun. This would put the River running along the East side of Verdun and the Aquaduct running along the West. I always felt that I went up (north) Willibrord from LaSalle Blvd. to Wellington Street when in fact I was travelling West. I'm getting dizzy thinking about this!

 

How do/did you see it?

Garters

Hey Linda

 

I remember the garters  and garter belts and the stockings with the seams up the back  so horrible,but do you remember the PRETTY POLLY'S stockings you pulled on with tight elastic at the top, they stayed up by themselves.  So tight they stopped the blood circulation, I think that is why I have fat thighs today. lol  Then of course the fun with the first panty hose that looked like they could fit your doll.

Ypres Day Parade & Corpus Christi

Hi

Does anyone know if they still hold the Ypres Day Parade, I remember it came along Verdun Ave. and seemed to me like a big event that I looked forward to. I think I even have some photos somewhere.

 Also seeing the first Communion picture reminded me of the Corpus Christi. We protestants called it a parade and the alter was often on Desmarchais on someones' big balcony.  We used to follow it and make fun of our RC friends that had to march in it.  Wonder what is was about and if they still hold it.  I wonder if it was a Verdun thing?

Three Sixes Club

When I hung around Dawson's we had a club called the Three Sixes Club. 

 I still have all the Guardian Newspaper clips from the clubs newletters.  Who won the jidder bug contest etc.  fun stuff.  I guess we didn't worry about the Devil cause we were full of the Devil  lol

Verdun Memories - Historical Workshops

The Dawson Community Centre is offering a series of FREE workshops for seniors. Through guided tours and talks led by Kathryn Harvey, historian and former resident of Verdun. The program seeks to encourage the exchange of stories about Verdun's past. The first workshop will take place with a visit to the "Growing Up In Montreal" exhibition at the McCord Museum.

Parc Cooney / Cooney Park

Hi, Everyone:

 

Does anyone know whom Cooney Park (facing Champlain Boulevard between Melrose and Desmarchais) is named after?  And was it always called that name—Cooney?

 

When I was growing up, we always called it "the park."  No one I knew called it by any other name.
