Cops verdun
Anyone knew Detective John Walsh., Detective Newlove,, Mr. Gallagher etc etc all good persons.Kept us straight..
hi..always read yours and other messages from people in VC ,and find them interesting..What age group would you be in..me I am 62..I think talking about places and things from the past is just great./
I recall from the 40s & 50s two policemen. One we all liked and respected as kids was called 'Red'. Never knew his full name. Nice person and didn't throw his weight around. Another was Captain Priestly, and the only reason we knew him was because of his famous daughter, Gladis. She was a champion swimmer. Hope I have my facts straight, it has been many years and water under the Victioria Bridge. S.A.
There was a well known policemen, later became a detective nicknamed "RED"..He had red hair , brush cut style and his real name was Harvey..nice person
I also remember "RED" my Mom used to talk with him all the time, I guess because her brother (my uncle) was a Mtl. policeman, she seemed to know him well. Nice Man. Glo
I left Verdun in 1959 after living in the same flat for 18 years. Maybe I'm asking for too much but could you do my brother and I a favor and send post the occupants from around 457 Second Avenue in 1960? S.A.
I remember them all. Lieutenant (later Captain Ernie Allen, Captain Jerry White, the departments official car wrecker (usually on foot on Wellington, whose name was Wally Daniels. These men had a profound effect - as I have a forty year career in the police force myself (RCMP). Many thanks to them
strange, when one gets older and looks back at their childhood, how lucky we were .. does anyone remmember: city putting on the fire hydrant to cool us down in the hot summer.. siren going off when someone broked out of the DOUGLAS nice long walks along the boardwalk fishing ( netting)by the river with a fire going.. buying toasted hot dogs & greasy fires, hum hum playing hooky from school, then playing the pinball machines shoveling sidewalks in the winter for a buck or two. putting $$$ in milk bottles for milk shating outside then nice hot choclate etc etc etc
hi JohnmelinvinAlso those old water trucks coming down the street that we all used to jump through or over ,.just as a method of cooling down................All good stuff,..good recall ,.John..................
always wonder, if those dectectives, Walsh, Gallagher ,Newlove had children who became cops, i wish them well as their dads sure help a lot of us in our younger days.I think the police station is still there, is it not.???next time in quebec ,i willl have to check . John
Remember the steam coming off the road where the water truck had sprayed, and also the sewer grate where the water were run down carrying all sorts of "stuff" along with it. Same deal when it rained a sunshower. I doubt we ever found anything of value, perhaps a penny or such, but oh the discovery of bits of paper that floated by, and maybe making a paper boat to float along the curb.
I wonder what the fascination was about floating things down to their ineviatble demise (down the drain)................hahahahahahaand Remember when it was really hot ,you could smell that water truck coming ,.there was a certain almost 'steam as you say' but that steam had a certain smell to it,....just as winter coming had a certain smell to it,..and of Course when winter neared it's end,...there were those certain smells that made you know it was spring.....................Funny even to this day,....there will be the odd time when i walk outside and if it's sort of colder than normal ,I'll think Hey it's smells like it's going to snow ,.or it smells like winter.............................Amazing Stuff ,Thanks for the memory prompt Mom45.////////////////Ok I'll talk to you but only from kenora to sudbury............hahahahaha
Yea, but less bypass the Suds, okay. He took me there on our last trip back to Montreal to show me where he lived, where he played, where he made his fort but the funny thing was it was all in his front yard.....
Well I'll tell you what Mom45 ,.we'll turn off just before WaWa ,.onto #11the truckers all use it and it gets us into Quebec?Montreal 2hours quicker than the old conventional route,...............save time ,.save gas ,.......= more time to spend in Montreal ............................How's that?
Mom45 .......at least he had a front yard........hahahaha Remember those 'postage stamps' we thought were front yards,,,,or were you rich gals from CoteStPaul/VilllEmard,..luckier than us you had self-contained homes & driveways didn't you.................................hahahahah
Les...we had a driveway which was shared but it was too narrow so you couldn't park two cars side by side. And if you parked one behind the other that created its own set of problems....if you think a little debate can get people tense and riled, need I say more......? Dianne
Yes once I moved to Lasalle ,.we too had a 'common driveway' shared by both 4plex's ..................................Yikes.........hahahahhahWe tried to do our fighting elsewhere Montreal was accomodating that way) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but we were not always successful................................. hahahahahah
I didn't think I was rich......not the way I was brought up. But my sister was born 20 years after me and she was spoiled rotten...she was the rich kid in the family!!! LOL!!!! Dianne P.S. And you should hear her whine and complain about having "old" parents.....geez!!
Just wanted to add.....boy did I ever love that little car, vintage 1948, robin's egg blue, and I was allowed to ride it all around the block, as long as I didn't cross any streets!
Linda I love your car! Was it a peddle car? We had one too, it was green. Do you or your family still have it? There's an antique toy store in New Brunswick and they had several of these cars and by gosh were they ever expensive! Dianne
No went by the wayside when my dad got sick and they had to sell their house and move into smaller digs . Les_F my glass is totally empty, think it had wine, but not too sure. Hey Dianne, got wine?
Hi Linda...I have wine but can't drink any after midnight...why?.....going for blood work tomorrow morning....have to fast, so now I am starving after reading that recipe.....too bad I can't send you a bottle of wine!! Dianne
Well this is all from Nova Scotia.....will only have a few hours sleep.....not complaining.....I am the master of my universe.....so I could have been in la la land hours ago......having too much of a good time!! See you all tomorrow... dianne
What years did they serve Verdun? Those names aren't familiar althought I do remember a fireman named Jacky Groom. He was so handsome. His wife was Gloria and they had two daughters, Gloria and Donna (?) They lived on Woodland near the Dawson's Boys Club. I remember the firemen telling us to go home by 9pm. The firestation was on Verdun Ave and Osborne, if memory serves me right.
Detective Newlove lived across the street from me on Rolland Ave. He had a son Craig ( Went to VHS) but I don't know if he ever became a cop like his Dad. Also when I was just a child we lived next door to Wally Daniels on Argyle Ave.
Hi I have drawn a blank on the street.Riverview Rest was on the corner and across the street was Tastee Freeze..The 107 turned around on Verdun Ave.Was it Brault? Anyway we got pulled over one night on the west island and brought in to the local station..asked a bunch of questions like why were some guys from Verdun out there and why the baseball bats in the trunk...well we like to play ball, went to D.Q. stuff like that..plus figure we could meet some girls..anyway kept us there for a bit, separated us to get the story and then said o.k. take off..best part was the cop that brought us in said at the end...have a nice night boys, and while laughing told us he was from Verdun...then laughed like hell..said it was quiet night so what the hell.. was not funny at first but we laughed about it later...he told us he lived up from the corner same side as restaurant...saw him once after that.Never heard after that and was some 30 or more years ago. Would anyone know him..? Treated us good.. Funny .. Lad
The only policeman I remember from the 50s was a great guy named 'Red'. He was well respected with us tiny hoodlums. What happened with the riots in Montreal? What sparked it? Bill
Police that I knew ell Wally Daniels, Argyle St. I found him on the tough side, and very hard on teenagers, Red , Red Eden very nice fellow, Drove the Harley Davidson motorcycles Verdun police had. and drove his brothers 74 Harley off duty. Also a competive pistol shooter.
when i think back now....all those detectives try to give us sound advise. they were OK. Did any of you know the O'Reillys from Crawfordpark..The father was mayor then i think he went to provincial politics...very nice family..all the bothers were firemen.
