Hi
Does anyone know if they still hold the Ypres Day Parade, I remember it came along Verdun Ave. and seemed to me like a big event that I looked forward to. I think I even have some photos somewhere.
Also seeing the first Communion picture reminded me of the Corpus Christi. We protestants called it a parade and the alter was often on Desmarchais on someones' big balcony. We used to follow it and make fun of our RC friends that had to march in it. Wonder what is was about and if they still hold it. I wonder if it was a Verdun thing?

Hi Ypres parade...use to follow it when it started on Church and along Verdun Ave. to number 4...man that was along time ago....and the Communion parade. I think they stopped that many years ago the both of them...another tradition gone I guess.. Being Protestant I could not figure out what the Communion parade was about. Was nice to follow too. Remember seeing the kids from St.Willibrord's going down the street for mass first Friday of the month...Best one met a waitress one night in a pub who also was teacher at St.Willibrord's.Went downhill when I mentioned to her I saw her walking with the students to Church... Sandy ~ Is that the parades where the procession was led by 4 people carrying a sort of alter? Being an Anglican we didn't have such parades, but that didn't stop us from sitting on the curb and watching the 'parade'. Don't know what was so attention grabbing....there weren't any floats, clowns, ballons, etc. But I seem to remember people pinning money to the float with the statue......is that possible. In Ville Emard there were many catholics.....english, french and italian......so perhaps the different ethnicities had different customs.

Hi there: I remember the Italian Church St. John Bosco having a parade where people would pin money onto the float. Down here they don't have the Corpus Christi parade. The summer of 1996 my daughters and I were staying at my Mom's on Dora Street in LaSalle, Mom was in the hospital dying from throat cancer. Anyway, early one morning we wake up to an awful loud racket and it took me a second or two to come to enough and realize that it wasn't some horrible cretin playing a boom box at 9AM but a band marching on the street. Everybody was out on their galleries and on the sidewalk watching this band march down the street. They were with the Italian Church that was near Dora Street. I cannot remember the name of either the Church or the street. That was the last time I saw a Church parade. Dianne
Dianne ~ glad to know that the money thing wasn't a figment of my imagination. Yup....it was the Italians I guess who did that. Sandy ~~ you're right about the Anglican and R.C.'s customs being very similar. Thanks to Henry VIII, eh? I remember now that all the little girls looked like they were brides, and the boys had suits on and ribbon armbands. Talking about armbands, my dad always wore armbands on his sleeves. They were sort of elastic thingies sort of like ladies garters. Now how many of you gals out there remember wearing garters to hold up your nylon stalkings......come on.......fess up!!!!

Laurie ~ when my kids started playing hockey (1975-76ish) I recall them being so surprised that I actually knew how to dress them with the hockey stocking holder thingie (not sure if it was called a garter belt). They thought it was just a piece of equipment hockey players wore!!!
Linda, Laurie and Sandy.......I asked my husband what that piece of equipment is called that holds up the hockey stockings and he said...garter belt.....then he said 'what are you talking about now?' Last week I asked him how to spell a few odd words and he is beginning to wonder what goes on here on VC! Dianne
Dianne, I think that he should join us in our conversations instead of just doing work on his computer......on the other hand.......maybe not . Quite frankly, I'm just as happy that my other half does his own thing (work) on the computer, only problem in our house.....we only have 1 computer . So we have to share as in "what's my time is my time, and what's his time is my time also if I need it". lol
Linda I am very glad we have our own computers...this way he does his thing and I do mine.....mine is a lot more fun......!!! Dianne
Hi Di! I remember John Bosco church and the parades with the money pinned to the blessed Virgin I think. It fascinated me as a child. I must have been 8 or 9 then. I also remember watching some games that were played on the church grounds...some guy trying to reach a salami at the top of the pole and he kept slipping and sliding down the pole. They had these games every year. I wonder what they were? Funny the things you remember as a child! Dolly
