Verdun Stuff (imagine that)
from Margo's Photo Album
Hope this sparks a few Real Verdun type Memory's.........................................
Wow ,some very familair names there.................Cooper,.Biggs,Allen,... etc etc .....................Surely there must be some others out therre with a Huge Box of Pictures to share with us......... ..........The whole site Appreciates the old Photographs & Childhood ,memories that you Could Share with us.................... both Modern Day Pics,...........and of course those Invaluable old Verdun pics with the kids in the lanes or on the streets or in the parks,or onthe streetcaars,,.........come on I'm sure you can all find at least two pictures each,..of growing up in Montreal,....and with our Membership at over 700+ members ,if we all found two (just 2) pictures each,.of anything related to Verdun,.Montreal etc etc......We would then have 1400 + new pictures to Look at ,........it's not that hard to do,....Ask your parents ,or siblings,or friends,............I have never seen a challenge yet that a Verdun Character couldn't meet.............Can You Find 2 Pictures to Share with the Rest of Us................................all the other stuff is nice ,but not as appreciated as a Personal input.........What do you Think.................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun.............................
Hi Les Great Idea, I have lots of pictures taken in the lanes as that was our best playground in the 50's I just seem to be having problems getting them to Verdun Connections Do I send them by regular e-mail?? Glo
Gloria, you can open a photo album (pictures) and add them to it, or you can post them in your messages. Storage space on MSN is limited so you might try opening a photo album elsewhere and posting a link. Does anyone have suggestions for free photo albums?
Hi Gloria, You can make an album directly on VC. Go to the left hand margin and select Pictures then in that box select Create a New Album. You then name and describe the album then create it. Then select the pictures from the file you have them in on your computer. "Tip" keep your pictutes reduced to a small size, if you need help to do that let me know. You also select who can add and delete photos in your album I suggest the last choice, only you and the group managers. The reason for reducing the picture size is that we have just 3MB of storage. Gary
Hope this pictures shows up,.....as I thought it was a nice shot of a very recognizable Verdun Landmark,..........found it on Flick'r site,.................Looks kinda Cool, (I think)
This I think is a late night shot of Wellington Street.?????????I'm sure someone else can correctly identify it,...I'm only going by those neat looking clocks,..which I beleieve there was one in front of the Church on Wellington,.......& D'leglise???
Hi Les I think the church is the one at 5th and Verdun or Church and Wellington. Second is Church and Wellington. Remember the clock.. Let me know if I got the first one right... Lad
hi Levisjeans,...........it is a nice shot,.........You can almost feel that Real Quiet ' feeling after a light snow, whle walking down Wellington................
The picture is interesting. The cars look ancient but Jean Coutu has onlybeen in that location for about 30 years. Anyway, down on the right side you can see the yellow sign of Scotiabank. It has to be when the building behind the clock was a bank. For years it has been a restaurant. Ed
Ed...looks like it is you, me, John and Winston.....Paul is up and at his PC but he isn't into VC...too bad.....he is the Verdunite and he should be on this site, but, if he was on the site then I would have to behave!!!! Dianne
If it wasn't LaBelle BBQ,.........or StHubert,.................then you could try here,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,..................................................Looks like they stole the Chicken off the top ofa St Hubert car..............................
.....................All the old Five & Dime Stores,......or Mom & Pop stores always had a counter ,where you could grab a stool,.......and have a grilled cheese,.or milkshake,...or ???????????????.........Oh Yea Remember having a Fountain Coke,.......have the Fun was watching them pour it from the Fountain,.and get it to fizzle,...................................
Big store or small,it always had a counter to hang out at,....Mom&Pop snackbar,........or Wollworths,.....or Five & Dime,.....Remember those old napkin containers,.& the large sugar, and of course thesalt shakers,........Now how many of you loosened the top on the Sugar or Salt containers.............hahahahahahah You little Ba$tar@#'s............hahahaha
Ok .////////////Good night ...............................................Catch you later on ,...............today most likely,..............................................................................Have Fun
Les I like the good night picture of the big light. I used to sit on my balconey On Melrose and watch that light go around and around when I was little it amazed me . Then my parents would tell me if I didn't go to bed the sand man would get me!This was a sure fire way to get me to go straight to bed. I rememberf the men who would walk the sidwalks with shovels of sand for the ice. I was sure these were the guys that would also put sand in your eyes. How's that for childhood trama? Ha Ha it worked !
Hi Levis, I remember the light too but it was on top of the sun life building, whioch was the tallest building in Canada when we were young. The one in the picture above appears to be on Place Ville Marie. Ed
I see it's been a bit chilly back east,......We're getting Ok temps but it's raining & has been Foggy at times,....Do they still use that Olympic Village (Remember the building for housing the athletes)I imagine these are probably Condos??? the view wouldn't be bad from that building in either direction really..... ...........................Have Fun & Remember Verdun .........
Now that's a Verdun Lane,...........................................from 'Colin's Photo Album' in pur pictures section,..........Imagine We had fun playing in those lanes,..and on those rooftops,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Nowadays we have parents tearing out beautiful well made Jungle Jims ,because we think the kids aren't bright enough to not 'Eat' the treated wood..................hahahahahaha but we played amongst paint tins ,Oil trucks ,Garbage Trucks ,..etcGarbage,,,,,,,,,,,etc etc ..................got love it
From 2003,................ Is this building now Condo's too ?Seems a lot of the pictures in the albums need some coaxing,as that familiar little white box with the red x in it ,is appearing instead of some of the photo's,I had to right click then it 'show picture' and it would appear,...... Still seems we are experiencing some glitches on the site,........Hope it gets back to normal soon...........................................................................
Hi Les,Levis and I spent much of our childhood in our back lane between Melrose and Argyle near VHS.We get out there at 8am and stayed until someone called us in for lunch or dinner. One hot summer day we decided we would bake potatoes,so we got the spuds from home, along with matches, stuck them on a stick and lit someones dried grass in front of their backyard to bake the potatoes. To our surprize the fire got away from us and the fire department had to come out and put it out. There were no baked potatoes nor dinner for us that night Wendy
Now this is a neat picture and could be any one of us ,.....posted by clarksville'from an album on page 7 of the pictures section,,,,,,,,Even thought the date on the picture says '62, there's alot of mid to late 50's cars there,........Remember those toys............hahahahaha probably cost a couple of bucks 'maybe'...................hahahahahaha ...................and I bet the truck got passedalong for a while too !! hahahahh
Close call for you girls..............very ingenuitive though..........hahahaha,but I bet your parents didn't see it that way did they ?............Nope, why are parents like that...........hahahahahaha Lanes ,Rooftops,.the River,...the Dam,........(and these were only some of the everyday stuff................hahahahaha I suppose many (if not all) of us Can look back & think........Whewwwww was I ever Lucky ,.to have lived through childhood.......................
Hey Les, Let me ask you a question.I'm new to the puter and this site.Often I come across pictures,or should I say blanks with a few dots in the top left hand corner and no pics appear. What do I do to see these pics? Thanks Wendy
Hi Wendy,...many times it may just be that whoever submitted the picture originally,.just deleted it,..You see you are allowed 3mb's of storage,..and each picture takes up some of that room,.So when people want to keep posting pictures ,they may have simply removed the picture,...but the text of the message stays,...and the spot where the picture was,.just shows as an empty box,.with a red x in the corner,.........But also you can try to 'right click' on that box with the red x,..and you can then click on 'show picture',.....if the picture is in fact there and for sdome reason just not showing up,then it may appear after the 'right click' deal..........If you do come across a posted message ,that indicates that it is a picture you'd like to be able to see,..Then just ask one of us,..and if the person who posted it initially sees the msg. they may post it again for you,.....I can usually (or at least i will try ) to always find the picture or story in question,..and I'd be glad to post it again for you.......
Hi Winston,.......... Are you talking about all the pictures ,or the ones in the Phtot Albums,....or the ones in the actual posted message ??If this is only recently that you are experiencing this problem then suspect it is just problems with MSN itself,......and Hopefully they will clear this up ? but who knows,..... You know the stuff we've gone through over the past few years,.most of it is never satisfactorly explained............(play Twilight Zone Theme here..............).................hahahahahaha I'm hoping it's temporary..............but if we lose everything again,...we will get in touch with everyone we can,to notify of an alternate site.....(We have a few in waiting).............Good Luck Winston,....and your right don't let it frustrate you,...........Although I cannot say that I havenn't been annoyed as of later,......and I've let them know it,.still without a reasonable response..........hahahaha
Hi Les, thanks for the info. I'll try the right click thing you said. I'm here on a Fri.nite, kids at sleepovers, husband out of town, and me and this machine.Woe is me.ha,ha,.I'm enjoying it tremendously. Wendy
Glad your having fun learning the computer,...and If you have any questions,....everyone here is happy to try & help,..We have a few people who are really good and are generally willing to jump in and help guide us in the right direction,...............but your doing quite well it seems ,.too bad we've been hit with a few Mishaps,.....but generally everyone is dealing with it,.....Just frustrating when you can read msg's but can't 'sign in'............hahahaha Oh Well c'est la vie,...I guess......... Have fun & Remember Verdun
Gloworm 138,........................were you able to get that email sent with the soong in it? Hope it worked OK.........I sent it to your hotmail address,.....So if your like me,.it may be one you rarely check,.......
Hey Les, if anybody can do this, I'm sure you're the man.My dad ,who is now 91 worked for CPR as a cop for many yrs. There is a picture of him somewhere on the front page of a French paper billyclubbing someone during the FLQ days.I'd love to see that again, print it out and send it to him.He is living at the Ste. Anne de Belveau Vets. Hosp.I know it's alot to ask, since I'm not sure of the yr.or anything. Thanks for your help. Wendy
Wendy I would love to find that picture ,.was it in the Montreal Star or the Gazette or Lapresse,...or Remember the old Sunday Express........I'll seewhat I can do on this limited info,....but that will be fun to find,....I still have some friends back east,........
Ahhh haaa..............I just re-read your post,.....got it,...French Paper,.................I fell on my head when I was kid,...........so i don't always think righthahahahahahI'll see what i can do...................................
Hey Les, I guess you didn't hit it that hard. Anyways, I think there is a time difference between us here, it is way past my bedtime but I look forward to speaking to you in the a.m.I appreciate your time and help. Wendy
Recognize this place,............preserving the facade of anold building (Rachel Street).............Angus???That place has Got to be Hard to Heat...........................................
Well trying to find CPR stuff,.....and I guess this is some of it......... ......No Doubt here,it's the old Angus Shops........Have a look in the background of the first picture ,.....What do you see?
Les. It was the recent messages with a picture attached. Just got the red X...but that is okay. It will clear up shortly. Just another MSN glitch, BUT I am still not compalining. Thanks

Hi Les, thanks for the pics.I remember my Dad speaking of Angus shops ofter. My brothere Steve worked for CP for 20yrs as a cop also. They both patroled Angus. Is that part of the veladrome built for the Olympics? Wendy
Now this is a Great Verdun picture,..................................................Spent some time under these old Redtops,.............. Thanks Metalman,.............a good Verdun Memory
.........and this one too ,says Verdun,.........saw that view many times walking home down Wellington,........Funny how you can see the Big Apartment building at 6th & Wellington (had a swimming pool on the roof.indoor),...and you can see the Church so easily as well,.down at Church Av........and beyond that a skyscraper Downtown,,,,,,,Remember we thought it was a big deal to go Downtown,..yet it was really very close.......................Funny how our perspective changes................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Great Front Page,...........................Thanks MaggieMck ,..I was thinking of that or the Red Top,................but the Wellington shot is perfect........Good picture Metalman,...........................much Appreciated
We have posted this address several times in the past,.but I thought I'd put it out there again,.it's called Promenade Wellington,......... and it contains lists of all of the business's too be found on Wellington,.and whatever other services are there as well.....................Check it Out if you like: http://promenadewellington.com/home.htm ..........Have Fun & Remember Verdun............................................
Had to post this one example: Rex's Pizza ..in a world that has changed so much in the last 10 years ,it's amazing to see a small business that has survived for 4 decades plus,.............
Remember these Teddy Bears,.........I found this on the mcCord-Museum site............and it reminded me of having one of these things,........and one of the eyes came off (I think I helped it..hahahah) but my mother sewed it back on,.and that seemed like a miracle ,.like she performed some sort of magical transplant ,thus fixing old Teddy once more.............. which is really odd,.cause I think I was 17..............hahahahahahah
Well that lost all of it's intended ,humour............without adding the picture.....see Spelling isn't the only short suit,..........being dropped on the old knoggan ,couldn't have helped..................as Wendy said the other day ,.maybe it wasn't that hard a hit,.but I'm starting to suspect,it may have been off the 2nd floor gallery.............................hahahahaha
Have a look at this .....we would have loved to have one ,that we didn't have to share......Show this to your kids, and see if they want to trade for their I-Pod ,.with a 1000 plus songs on it ,..................hahahaha Remember when the needle would start to wear,.or the record had a scratch in it causing the needle to'skip' & we would tape some coins on the arm, keeping the neddle firmly on the Records.......................hahahahahahaNothing like forcing (what basically amounts to a Nail) down on your precious 45's that you probably bought at Buckley's the week before ,along with that sheet of paper ,with the list of the Top 40 ................ ..........Next time your kids complain,.threaten to get them one of these,Try wearing that around your neck,......................hahahahaha
Once I was sooooo desperate to play my 45 (probably Fats Domino ~ Blueberry Hill) and I didn't have a needle, that I taped one of my mom's pins on, and darned if the sucker didn't play...not as well as a needle....but okay.
Another record store in Verdun was Blue Notes, I think every time you bought a recored you got a stamp on a card when you got 10 you could get a free record. At $l.00 a record and a 25cent allowance it took a long time to get that record collection, no wonder I don't want to part with it scratches and all. Glo
hi Gloworm I know how you feel I still have a pile of 'em too.....hahahahaWas Blue Notes the store on Church Av,....just up from Wellington and on the West Side of Church,.right beside ols lady Macalherns Florist shop ?.and I think it was either beside or was part of the Model Shop,.....(plastic models,& hobbies, stuff)Yup also think it was $1.06 with tax or something like that.....???
Oh my goodness! We still have a record player just like that one!!! And an eight track player and two stereo turntables......the stuff we collect and keep!! Dianne
I Remember when my only older sister Graduated,.she got a 'Stereo HiFi Record Player' that had two speakers,....and they could detach from the turntable (which folded down out of a suitcase like thing),,,,,,and you could put the speakers maybe 3 or 4 feet away from the actual record............Would wonders never cease...............hahahahahaha it all folded up into one large grey looking suitcase ,.complete with a handle on top to carry this thing...................................
Ok Sandy the knick knack things as presents rings abell sort,.of I used to save my allowance and the money I made at my oldmans shop (worked from an early age),......and bought all my family's Christmas Gifts from little stores along Wellington Street,.............Blue Notes although I don't Remember it exactly I must have been in it,..i somehow hace some sort of a visualization of it's sign,,,,,,,(poer of suggestion I guess)I will try to find an old picture of Wellington in my searches ,.and maybe we can get lucky and find Bluenotes,...............I can think of almost all the business's along that particular block,.but not sure exactly where you meanwas it on the N side btwn 4th & 5th,.or??? the Bank of Montreal was right on the corner of 4th & Wellington S side,.....and Tusignant's Grocery was across the street roughly,.( Mr Tousignant was killed outside the bank doing a bank deposit),.........In any case Buckley's was generally my 1st choice,...and Church Av store next,...only because I lived down that area I guess,.............Great Memory sparker though
Sandy. You are keeping that stuff, because they are memories. I still have 45's, 78's, 8 tracks, LP'S, and the equipment to play them on....WHY????? BECAUSE!!!!!
Laugh, share and connect with Windows Live Messenger
Yes Ok Sandy ,.I was one block over,.................Thanks for mentioning the 'Hit Parade'..................I called it the Top 40 or something ,.but 'Hit Parade' it is...............................hahahaha Thanks ,I'm laughing to myself ,that all us adults (I get an honary adult pass only because of age)......hahahaha and were all Rememberring little snippets from what seems a lifetime ago.............................but what a Life it was............. "Growing up in Verdun,.Montreal"............just Good Stuff....hahahaha
I wonder if Blue Notes was the same store that was once called Musicland. It was owned by a man Called Isidore Torontour. I bought some RCA VIctor gold label., such as Caruso and Lanza. It was around that area. Ed
Sandy. I haven't played the records for awhile. But I have everything set up in my garage, and have played an 8 track not to long ago. My kids are always after me to get rid of the "old stuff"....But ain't going to do it. I have so many LP'S....show tunes, etc. I even have at least one record of "bawdy" songs. I might just play something this next week. I

Yes Sandy I'm not sure why that is ,.but a friend of mine years ago once told me that he noted that all Montrealer's are fiercly passionate about their City,.......and I had never thought of it that way,........but I think he was on to something,..because I Encompass all of Montreal like that,.,,,,,,,,,,,,,with ties to Griffintown,.PointStCharles,....Verdun........I certainly like being from ....Mun treal...........hahahahah but We do have a degree of nostalgia of our hometowns,...........(and only We can critique it)..............hahahahaha
Wendy When I saw the picture of Verdun High it made me think of all the birds, mice ,hamsters, and goldfish we buried in the gardens in front of the school. Everything we found dead or dying we put there.
Yeah, Hi Lynn, Just getting on.I have'nt seen the picture yet but I remember one kitten of your's that died at birth, after giving it a ceremony of religious songs and a proper burial in a Eno box, we dug it up 4 wks later to look at the bones. We were morbid.LOL Wendy
Hi Les, I remember the Busby family lived in that apt.building.Used to hang around with Maggie Busby and we would throw eggs from her top balcony at the unsuspecting people walking by.We were bad. Wendy
HI Les Just read about Buckley's record store. Going in on the left next to the cash was the rack with the 45's on it. First time I saw Beatles record on Apple records was there. Could not figure out what was the green apple record. Until they told me Hey Jude.. Remember record store on corner of Church and Verdun Do Re Mi they moved across from Buckley's later on. The one down near 6th later became Record Cave. Then they moved downtown.. Good memories and music Lad
My recollection is that Blue Note Record Shop was on the South side of Verdun Avenue, I believe between 4th and 3rd.

Sandy I really got a conversation going on Blue Notes, you are right for sure it was near 5th. ave. I lived on Banantyne near Desmarchais and would walk up to Wellington it was not too far from Stilwells, used to stop by there and get a Humbug lollypop. Any one remember those. Glo
The mention of Larose studios ,.reminded me of two things,......Some really old photographs we have found and posted here on the site,.had the LARose monicker..........on them,..........the other thing is I always bought my 35mm film form a photo studio above 5th av Restaurant (Pof W),.but upstairs on the 2nd floor was where I went to buy fim ,.for either myself or my brother,.(when your the kid brother, you run errands,..........hahahaha)but I know I have posted pictures in the past fromsitting directly outside this spot on Wellington,.......I don't (or can't 100 percent ) Rememeber if it was LaRose Studios,......but it has to be the same place,.................Another memory prompt ..........Thank You Gang................easing me into senility....................hahahahahahahReminds me of the guy who gets a phone call from his Mom,.who wants to smooth things over btwn her son & her son's father, who now has Alzheimers,....She says to her son ,.Your Father wants you to come Home...................All is forgotten.................................................
Holy Cow! LaRose Studios - I have an old 'black & white' photo of me in my First Communion dress sitting so pretty and looking, as the photographer said "so angelic"!!! HAH! Did he ever have the wrong person there.....haha. That would have been way back in 1947. Boy, time sure flies when you're havin' fun!! judy(grayburn/mcnab) in NB
Hi Artubus Wow thanks for the listing for a slice of Wellington...P.O.Wales rest. Does anyone remember going by the side door next to the lane and buying coca cola popsicles... 5 cents...man they were a treat... Can anyone tell me what was the name of the record store between 5th and 6th..just before you got to the Habitant rest. Remember that place? Kitty corner almost from the apts. Lad
Hi this is my first message to vc i hope it works. I remember when they built that addition to the back of the rest. Some things stick in the mind and when they were diging the foundation the large mech. shovel had to get out of the hole so the placed 12x12 logs and the thing went up that ramp nearly turning over. What would the CSST say these days.
Hey Arby, I remember the Prince of Wales. It was one of the first restaurants to sell 7up. We walked all the down there because it was a full 7 ounces, one more than coke. Shortly after Pepsi topped them all with 12 ounces. Ed
A-w-w! What a little sweetie you were in your First Communion photo, Sandy. When I figure out how to scan and all that other 'tekkie' stuff, I'll send mine in for Show & Tell too. judy in NB
Okay Sandy. You started it!!!!! Now I want to know what they REALLY say about Catholic girls. And don't hold back...I want to hear it all......PLEASE......Winston..... Check out all that glitters with the MSN Entertainment Guide to the Academy Awards짰
Sandy, You were a cutie indeed! I remember La Rose. Seems he did all the school photos. Ah, yes, we Catholic girls were so sweet and quiet but watch out! It's the quiet ones, you have to worry about! Dolly
Wow has Nuns Island ever grown,.....................and there's plans for much more from what we hear..............Looks alittle different from Our day.......................................... here's another angle..................in the second photo ,it must be some years back ,.as you can see there's no additon to the Nat, of the extra pool,.nor the bandstand type of thing they have around there now,...........................
Winston I think you mentioned this building quite a whilw back,.....................Although I may have posted this shot,.(can't Remember),..........the building of course is on StXavier,...................
An old Italian Grocery ,.listed as StZotique,..............Could be a Store in any of our neighbourhoods ,the Corner Store,..they are all quickly disappearing ..........................hard to make a living with all the Big Box Stores,.........Remember these corner stores would have a'Book',.......for you to pick up a few things and then pay for them when payday came around.........................you got your name in the "Book"before the days of credit/debit cards,...........but it still goes on today,.try asking Costco to just put your name in the 'Book' ...............hahahahaha
Looks a little chilly at Peel & StCatherine,.......................... http://www.montrealcam.com/en-visitation.html ,,,These would be the days you want to be exploring montreal's Underground part of town,................... Remember just opening the doors to a Metro Station,.and you'd feel that bitter cold Montreal Winter air come rushing in,.................Or sitting on a bus ,and you'd be freezing at every stop when the driver opened the door,...and Whooosh in would come that Cold Breeze,.....a quick shiver and get ready for the next stop,.......
Chilly looking StJAmesGuess everyone was wondering where these trucks were:............................Brrrrrrrrrr Looks Cold,............................
Les. Yes. That is The Montreal Stock Exchange (on the first floor), and The Canadian Stock Exchange (on the second floor). Good memories there. Thanks Turn searches into helpful donations. Make your search count.
Montreal Traffic Cams around the Greater Montreal Area,........the roads look in good shape,.so I guess there was not much snow, like they got in parts of NY State?? ,..........but I was listening to 940 am a Montreal Radio Stn,.and they were saying ,withthe windchill that it's quite cold right now,...-32 with wind chill....................................Yikes that's a bit cool,..........better be careful outside in those temps............
Sorry here's the webcam links for those Greater Montreal Traffic Cams,.just click on any of the cams for the area you want to see,.......... http://www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca/en/information/cameras/montreal/index.asp

Remember the Planetarium,,,,,,,,,,,donated by Dow Brewery's,.................. a good photo of the Planetarium as well as all the Brewery Buildings in the background,.and the familiar old Crown of the Dow Brewery Logo,.......this must have been very close to the last days of Dow,.after the beer knocked off a feww patrons in Quebec,.and Dow immiately dumped 1000's of gallons of suds down the drain,.completely voluntary,.but the bad press, made it impossible for them to recover........Is the Planetarium still called Dow Planetarium,,,,,,(I know it's still there as last summer was their 40th anniversary or something like that,.but i imagine the name has changed...........anyone out there know for sure???
I guess this answers my question,........it was donated to the City of Montreal& is operated by the City's Parks Department In July, 1964, Dow Brewery Limited announced that it was financing the construction of a planetarium on Chaboillez Square in Montreal, where the company's head office is located, The completed project, which cost $1,250,000, was donated to the City of Montreal in 1966: and is operated by the Parks Department.
Les I heard a while ago they wanted to move the Planetarium across town east... Still there as far as I know..The brewery across the street is now University. The CN bldg. and the parking lot is down and going condos I think. The Dow brewery bldg. was empty last time I saw it. Don't know if you know this but around that parking lot in back is now entrance to expressway heading east down toward Molson's... Lad Great pic.
Yup knew a few of those things,...I had some pictures of soem of the dilapadated almost ruins ,certainly abandoned buildings ,.and I think your right a conversion to Condos,.for some of them,.....I know the old Lowney's building is also converted to Condos,.I wasn't aware of the want to relocate the Planetarium to the East (end of montreal ,I guess you mean??) I guess they know that land would be very valuable in todays' market,....................the City's sure changing,........Thanks for that info Btw:
Amazing some of the tecnology around ,.....but here's a good link to a shot (Google Earth type of shot),.....but it shows how much land has been reclaimed along the river,.behind the olf Natatorium,.....also the extra kids pool they put in there,...lot's of Greenspace that's for sure,.........Remember the old boardwalk & how close it was to the fence of the Nat,.and the River immediately beside that,................................. http://wikimapia.org/731904/
Hi Les Remember the old LaSalle Blvd. down near the golf course..it used to run near the river.Did you know they closed it off and rerouted it in front of all the big houses they built where the course used to be.The old road is still there but for biking and stuff like that.First time you see it kinda of throws you.. Lad
the lad: Yes I heard that they had done something like that,.i didn't know it ran behind some of those new(er) houses,..nice way to get waterfront.................I haven't seen it myself yet,.have seen a few pictures of added greenspaceall the way to the Harbour ...Looks good,.......Does Centrale still go right through the old Golf Course........................used to be a perfect 1/4 mile ,(if you went through the Stop sign in the middle)...............as long as you had a spotter,.......you could open her up along there...........(so I'm told ..hahahah)cause I wouldn't think of unleashing my Bigblock that would be illegal:hahahahahaha.................. There was along open space,....from (what were new streets at the time) would it have been from Bishop Power ,then a few more av's added (up to 14th is that possible??) and then a long gap,.and 35th, was on the far side....................
the lad: Is there any part of the old golf Course tha isn't develloped? Isn't the Protestant High School ,built around there somewhere??It's been a while since I travelled that area,.so most of it is probably new(ish)Even on some of mt trips back to Montreal,.I just never really had cause to get out to those spots,................I will make a more detailed tour of Montreal & surrounding areas, when I can manage a trip back there next time,..besides I have to get old DannyB to be my official tourguide ,.while we sample many of the City's offerings.......(food & booze)& sites of interest :
Just to clarify Les, LaSalle Blvd. still runs in front of the houses in question. They built a new road because it was cheaper than trying to straighten the dangerous curves in the old one. Ed
Natatorium : There was a time when us girls would take a dive from the high board and all the boys would be waiting in the water for us to lose the top off our swim suits. I guess the life gards caught on and they wern't allow to tred water in the deep end. Lot's of good times were spent at the Nat the rooftop was the best we were starving after a full day at the pool. It seemed the walk home was so long.
Yes a full day at the Nat gave a kid a huge appetite, and the walk back to 2nd Avenue was endless. However on arrival home a good sized chunk of crusty bread and peanut butter, along with a glass of cold Kik Cola to wash it down, and I was totally ready for what was next to complete my magical summer day. Second Avenue
biking2006 I can't agree with you more Crusty bread and peanut butter oh so good, Mom would send me to A&P to buy crusty bread by the time I got home the heal of it was gone and a big whole was through the middle. Remember the waxed Balonie they sliced it as thick as you wanted it, you could take it home fry it up and enjoy ! these basic foods are comfort food to me.
Lynn. I bet you girls dived into the pool just to try and lose the top, and make it look like an accident. Good girl Lynn Thanks Lynn....Now I remember who you are...LOOKING GOOOD.....
Winston With tax season right around the corner, make sure to follow these few simple tips.
Hi Levisjeans It seemed that walk along the blvd. or Bannantyne was really long especially when it was one of those hot and sticky days....nothing like missing the bus and staring all the way down the street... Lad
A-w-w! The Natatorium! I should have had a bed there!! When we lived on Valiquette(around 1953-ish and onward), every morning I was there taking the Red Cross swimming courses - which were FREE! Were any of you there???Then I'd go home and come back again at 1 o'clock and play, play, play until 5-ish. Afterwards, we'd run upstairs to get chips or hotdog or pop....what a life! I think that was probably what got me into competitive swimming and eventually becoming a Lifeguard. Speaking of 'lifeguards', I'm trying to remember some of their names and the only one that comes to mind was "Leon". Does anyone remember Gladys Priestley or Bobby Neilsen? They were both Stars in the 'swimming world' at the time. There was also a really good diver that we used to watch...I think his name was Bernard but I don't remember his last name. Remember "cannonballs" off the high boards and we'd try to splash the Lifeguards???? judy in NB
Newfy dog Although I wasn't even born yet (1954 was my year) memories of the Nat are vivid in my mind. The thrill of actually being allowed to ride my bike along Lasalle Boulevard sidewalk to get there from Crawford Park. Going through those dangerous metal round revolving thingies to the left side. Renting those baskets, pinning it to the swimsuit, hoping it doesn't fall off. Being made to walk through that little square thing of chlorine to disinfect our feet. Ugggg, it was white. One could pick up more germs from that...HA HA However we survived. Ahh to the burning hot pavement . No matter how hot it was out, the water I remember was always frigid freaking cold. There were hundreds of shivering purple- tinged kids with bobby pins on their noses. And yes - the restaurant upstairs - Ice creams were awsome - and those little bags of crumbs were unforgettable. Good memories.
Dianne, The floods in the spring were caused by melting ice flowing downriver and getting jammed at the bridge. When they dynamited the ice jam they had to clear all the rafts and boats from the streets so they wouldn't be swept into the river with the fast receding water. When I lived on Woodland in the fourties the family across the street had an old rowboat in the yard. It seemed so far from the river that I asked why they had it there. The Grandfather told me they used it in the spring to get to the general store at Church and Wellington. Ed
I see in this mornings Gazette,.that the Verdun Hospital,.has now been hitby this C Difficile ??? I have heard of this over the past couple of years ,.but only in a few Hospitals in Quebec,.......What is this bug,.?It sounds almost like a Legionairres thing,....and it's killed quite a few people.....do they not know what it is? Verdun hospital hit by C. difficile http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=e5633df4-b239-4bb3-a94e-4e65a875b452&k=62530 .....there more to the story ,if you want to check it out ,.click on the link ..Sounds like they can't stop this thing???
Well in that article iy does say 'no deaths' reported at either a StJerome or the Verdun Hospital....... but it seems to me I've heard of this bug for a while ,and I thought it had claimed a few people ,????Anyone else heard of this thing??
Les I have heard of this bug before and I thought it claimed the life of some elderly people who got this horrible virus. In October 1996 my mother was in the Montreal General and this bug was in the hospital then and I had just arrived that day from Nova Sotia to see my mother when they decided to close the hospital to visitors. However after a few days they allowed visitors but we had to wear hospital gowns over our clothes, masks and gloves and weren't allowed to bring purses or anything into the rooms while visiting. I'll never forget that trip to Montreal!! My mother passed away on Nov 8, 1996 but not from that virus, she had throat cancer which had spread to her bones then to her brain. Dianne
Hi HappyDi ,...so it has been around for awhile,.I thought so.the precautions taken ie: gowns etc etc,.....almost sounds like the SARS thing in Toronto ,or as I mentioned the Legionairres Disease......Sounds a little scary,.if it's been around for over 10 years,& they have no idea where it comes from??I was visiting a friend in the hospital here the other day,.and they have a sign at the entrance to the ward ,that mentions to wash your hands before going in,.and to wash them again on the way out,...and they've been doing this for a few years that I can Remember,......but it does get your attention:
Les here is a site that tellyou everything you want to know..or don't want to know about this virus. http://chealth.canoe.ca/channel_section_details.asp?text_id=2798&channel_id=1020&relation_id=8289 Dianne
Thanks Di ,.........Seems to explain ,it ...I try to stay out of hospitals anyway,.and I'm always aware of 'sickness' present when visitng one,...............We just had a bunch of Lunatics in our gov't here in BC ,that just spent ,.a few hundred thousand dollars (not theirs of course.....hahahaha) to go into Hospitals Here,....and (get this) Teach the Health Care Workers How to Wash their F7&^%8ng Hands.............................hahahahahahahHave you ever heard of anything so stupid,...........Didn't we learn that when we were 2 or 3 years old,..................hahahahahaha Lunacy is Rampant..................... if an idiot like a DR or a Nurse (aka Health Care Worker) ......doesn't know how to wash their hands,.then Fire Them (preferably out a window..............with the money)....hahahahah
Les that is so crazy spending money to teach health care people how to wash their hands...but, how many people don't wash their hands after using the washroom? Something so simple as washing hands can prevent many diseases. Well, I am off to wash my hands again!!!! Dianne
HappyDi,................ apprently some of the dirtiest surfaces we come in contact with,.....are things like 'keyboards' YIKES ,.where'd ya go..hahahahaha also shopping cart handles ,.etc etc ... with Bacteria Countshigher than that of some Toilet Seats.......................hahahahahahAlways reminds me of the Parent who freaks out when their kid drops a sandwhich on the kitchen floor ,.and immediately tells the kid "Don't touch that ,.or don't eat that it's dirty"....then when there out camping or at the park and the Parent drops the kids hotdog,..she picks it up ,brushes it off,...gives it to the kid,.and says "a little Dirt ,won't kill ya"...........hahahaha
Since it's lunchtime here (westcoast time) ,I thought I'd post this picture of a very busy (at one time) & frequented by both VHS & VCHS students ,as well as many other Verdun characters,.......................You'd get Pogo's & cup of mustard.,.or Fries wraped in the newspaper,.......or a steamie etc etc ,..Does anyone out there have an old photo of the old Barry's Fish & Chips??
HI part 3 Just thought of something...hope he wasn't passing on the inside there... Then again......they always said we were crazy....and the drivers from home were just plain nuts... Lad
...........and after Barry,...............one of our friends who worked there also ran it for a while,......... Brian Blackburn,.......... Sharon was married I think to his friend (something like that, anyway) Sharon are you out there, somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains...............????? Haven't heard from you for a bit,.Hope all is well? & your daughter has won some more prizes..............................................
Remember how hard the firefighters in Montreal worked,...........it seems there was always a fire somewhereSeems like they were always working on something,..............Remember when we were kids and the Firemen would come up to the stadium,.and spray their hises,.and let us kids hang on to the hose to see what power was in them,............and they used to also hold out that mat (trampoline thing) that they used to catch people who would jump from burning buildings,...............we used to jump off the concession stand roof, into those mats ...........the City of Verdun,.was actually pretty good to us kids,.......from the rinks to the parks,...and all those neat olympic style events we had at the Stadium,....us -----against other areas of Montreal:
Hi; Pictures are from Connaught School, Ville Emard, Grade 2 1937. In the picture with the 4 boys standing, I'm dressed in white with long pants During the 6th. Grade, the school had to be shut down for repairs, we were sent to subsitute schools, I went to Woodland / Verdun. Had a lot of lunches around the corner on Verdun ave. Fish & Chips, very good & greasy My Farther also attened Connaught School. It was during its first year it opened
Hi Di your probably right ,.the guy sure caught some nice colour in the shot:Remember on those nice Sunny Winter days,.that as soon as the Sun disappeared ,.you could feel the Cold just come over the city,........where on a day like that one ,you would have your coat undone and enjoying the Sun,.but it got done up quick with the wind that always came off the River,,,,,,,,,It's nice to get the sunshine,.makes Winter bearable,........not like that always here on the coast,....so when the Sun's out we appreciate it,.........been nice here lately though,......what's happenning on your end of the Country,....
A nice shot off the mountain,..with the sun shinning ,,,,,,,and Montreal getting ready for nightime:Funny how our whole thinking used to change ,when nightime rolled around,.get ready to head out & party,..............the City just came alive:
that last shot I suppose could be a sunrise,.but with the inside of the railing seemingly lit by a sunlight,.I would think it's sunset,.as that's where the Sun would have to be to illuminate the insde of the railing at the Lookout Chalet
Les in my end of the country we had a light dusting of snow during the night...but this afternoon we have +5C and brilliant sunshine! A nice change from the freezing cold that we had for almost a month. We were very fortunante this winter we didn't have any major storms like Newfoundland and even Cape Breton. I want to say winter is almost done here, but I know what will happen if I say that...so I wont say it.....and the groundhog did not see his shadow.....sssh...not saying another word!!! Dianne
...............................Good Morning Montreal.........................................................................You knew it was Cold ,when you would see all the steam rising from the River ,or the Vents on the top of the buildings...........Brrrrrrrr..
Yes ...don't say it....................shhhh ,theh same will happen here,a new storm will be here in minutes ,.to guarantee it ,.all I have to do is wash the car.....hahahaha (which I was going to do yesterday),........
Mom45 ,.................I thought you might want to save this one for referance next December,............ ....................hmmmm hahahahahahahahaha
Touchy826, Hi, you must have attended around the same time as my uncle, who I believe, is your cousin.....Walter. We were talking about Connaught School and he mentioned that he also had Miss Arbon in 1st grade, and Nurse DeWitt was there also. As you probably already know, he lives out here in Vancouver now, and his wife Beatrice died in June 2003. Do you have any other pictures from Connaught, or do you have any other memories ~ like teachers you may have had? Cheers.
Remember having to dig out after a Montreal Snowstorm,............and then having to drive in those ruts in the middle of the road ,on every avenue until they got those plows out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.......also just walking down the sidewalk over those snowbanks we used to get, after a heavy dump of the white stuff,.......
It was #172, I'm losing it. As a child, cold nights on the Avenues during or after a snow storm had that sad mystical quality to it sometimes. Feeling unsafe, and not protected. That powerful picture brought it back to me. S.A.
Les You have done it again!! some great photo"s Thanks
Remember getting up at 5:00 am to start shoveling out your car to go to work after being out at the bars half the night. As soon as you would get your car out somebody #! # would take your spot!
Hi: Yes Walter & I are Cousins, but I thought Beatrice had passed away.. They are the only two pictures I have of Connaught school, but I thought they did not get attached ?? I did not see them on my message after sending, and cannot locate my message to day. I have a new computer and am having a bit of a problem adjusting to same Walter several years older than I am, Gordon his Brother & I were the same age, The only teachers name I recall , Was a Miss Cross 1 st. Grade. Have we ever met ?? Ron Larman
Hi Ron ~ Nope, don't think we have ever met. I lived in Ville Emard, next door to Walter and Beatrice (who was my mom's sister). And by the time I got to Connaught School, Mrs. Cross was teaching grade 2! I used to babysit Gordon and Phyllis-Ann's children, Ross & Gail, when they lived over in Ville Emard. By the way, if you click on your name which appears at the top of messages, beside the word 'From' it will take you to recent messages you have posted. Cheers,
Thanks for the classroom photo. I went to Connaught from 1947-1955 K-7. I remembered the desks and blackboards but had forgotten the long board for hanging art work. I don't have any pictures except the individual ones taken by the photographers. I lived on Champigny between Laurendeau and Angers, closer to Angers. I remember when Hamilton School burnt down probably around 1950-51 or so and all the kids were moved to already crowded Connaught. Maureen
Ron....many thanks. Got to see the classroom picture. Really neat! Maureen...guess you were just a few years before me. I went there from 1951-57. Some of the teachers I had were: K - Miss Penney & Miss King 1 - Miss Arbon 2 - Miss Cross 3 - Miss Assley 4 - Miss Milne 5 - Mr. ? 6 - ? 7 - Miss Farwell So nice to talk to people who attended Connaught. Cheers.
Hi Linda, I had Miss Ritchie in K Miss Arbon - 1 Miss Morrison - 2 Miss Gefter - 3 Miss Secombe - 4 Mr. Hanley - 5 Miss Farwell - 6 Miss Farwell - 7 And, of course, Mr. Kneeland, the super nice principal. I thought Miss Farwell had retired with Mr. Kneeland the year I graduated, guess not. Yes, it is nice. I really enjoy reading all the posts. I've noticed that even though most of the people here seem to be 10 or more years younger than me, the experiences have been almost exactly the same. Where did you live? Maureen
Maureen ~ I lived on Briand Street (near Springland) in Ville Emard. Just remembered that I believe my Gr 5 teacher's name was Mr. Hanley also. Went swimming at the Baths on Laurendeau, played in Campbell Park and skated there in the winter also. Shopped on Monk Blvd (probably at all 12 stores) lol. Remember the assembly room with a stage, where they set up big long seats for us kids? If I remember correctly, half of this room was also a classroom. Remember the wooden pointers the teachers used to point things out on the blackboard? We also wore tunics in those days....unlike kids today, eh? They used to have movies in the gymnasium after school. I can remember Tarzan & Jane, Lassie .... I also feel into the hole in the lot next door when they were execavating for the Dominion Store. It was in the winter and the hole had filled with water and frozen. Got sent home that day!!!! Son of a gun, the memories just keep flooding my mind. It's GREAT. Cheers.
Maureen....My aunt Shirley Downey went to Connaught around the same time as you.... My aunt lived with me and my parents on Angers Street, corner of DeSeve in those days. Dianne
Dianne - I don't remember you aunt, maybe she was in a different grade or because we had 2 and sometime 3 classes of the same grade we never ended up in the same class. Linda - I also swam at the Baths, played and skated at Campbell Park but mostly at Drake Park which was much closer. I remember well the assembly hall and the nice deacon's benches they had in the first couple of rows. And you are right the back was a classroom. I remember the Home Ec. Room where we took cooking half a year and sewing the other half, learning to sew on Singer treadle sewing machines. I don't think kids today even get Home Ec.?? Mine didn't. When I first started school my mum could watch me from the kitchen window all the way to the schoolyard so I used to walk down the lanes saving all of 3 minutes I suppose. After more flats were built and she could no longer see that far, she made me walk around. I hated going down those stairs to the Gym alone, just found it spooky. Also, I remember on bad days staying at school for lunch in what we called the basement even though it was the ground floor. And the food smells seemed to linger. I think we only had movies maybe once every second week and it was 10 cents. I also had a run in with a construction site. I was standing watching a "steam shovel" excavating a hole for new flats they were building across the street from the school. As the shovel passed round to dump it's load muddy water fell all over me and I actually threw up and ran home. Do you remember the little house between the girls and boys schoolyards? I think the caretaker lived there. I could go on and on - lots of great memories. Thanks
Hi Maureen ~ Yup, HomeEc.....I remember my mom making the "outfit" we had to wear, which I think was an apron and some kind of band for our hair. I remember being scared skinny about the cooking part - never used the gas burners before, and I was afraid they would blow up. I think you're right about the movies. I just remember we had them in the gym, and I used to roll my coat up to sit on, as we had to sit on the hard floor. My mother was livid when I got home and she saw how wrinkled the coat was. Yup that was the caretaker's house I believe. Darned it, I remember licking the gate post and getting my tongue stuck and the caretaker had to come over with some hot water so I could get it off. (Obviously happened in the winter!) I remember eating lunch in the 'basement' which was the first floor. There were benches all around the perimeter. You got it right....smelled like h*ll. Did you have any younger siblings who went to this school? Cheers. Linda
Well, I'll try again. My last message has gone astray ...out there..somewhere. Yes, my mom also made my cooking outfit. And I also remember sitting on the gym floor for the movies with our coats and schoolbags sometimes used for a pillow. I have 2 brothers, one 2 years younger and one 5 years younger. Also 2 cousins, Charles and Diana Hindle who lived on Dubois. They were around the ages of my brothers. An aunt also went to Connaught. She was about 20 years older than me. One year our class had a turtle and everyone was anxious to have a turn cleaning its fish bowl or whatever it lived in so that brings back memories of the dirty old sink the caretaker used for washing floors, I suppose. Miss Farwell always talked about her budgie and her dog. She seemed very severe but was really just the opposite. Do you remember lining up 2 by 2 in the basement when the bell rang? I think when I was there we only had to wear our tunics on gym days. I could be wrong about this. At VHS we had to wear our uniforms all the time and horrible shorts with elastic in the legs for gym. Do you have any siblings who went to Connaught? Maureen
Maureen ~ I have a younger sister (Beatrice) and younger brother (Rick). My maiden name was Noble. I absolutely remember Charles and Diana so I guess they must have been about my age. I remember Miss Farwell's first name was Enid. Not sure how I remember other than she must have signed it in our report cards. I also remember Miss Assley's first name was Gloria! Funny the things you remember, eh? One of the teacher's names was Miss Thompson, and she lived on Springland, not too far from us. Even on summer days when school was out, I remember I still called her Miss Thompson. Here's a pic of my K report card (and picture), and also a pic of my brother when he was in K (10 years later) he is sitting from row (left) with silly grin. Laurie (another member here) posted this pic of my brother: Wow, that's a big pic. Sorry for that. Cheers.
Linda - You had Miss Farwell. I remember my sister andbrother talking about her. Naturally that is not what they called her, added an extra T to the middle of her name. LOL. There was also a Mrs Kivietkosky (spelling ?) She was Scottish I believe. (good name for a scotsman). Laurie
No, one is an artist and one is an engineer. Did you know of an Etienne. My brother is working on a family tree - so we are collecting as many names as possible Laurie
HI: I've got to add I remember Mr Kneeland well, but I did get the strap once. and the Ville Emard Baths, started a swimming team 1942. We were only about 6 swimmers, Dave Finlay, latter Lifeguard at Verdumn Natatorium, Tony Mancuso, Middle weight boxer, Both have passed on. and another Russian friend that moved on to become tobbaco farmer. I did well, won a few backstroke races in city competion. Had a nice picture but loaned it out and never got it back Baths.
One of my memories of Connaught School, is that when you reached Grade 7, for one day you would be appointed "Bell Monitor". Remember the big brass plate outside the office, with a couple of push buttons on it? On my day as monitor, I kept forgetting to ring the bell at the right time ~ but I managed to struggle through the day and knowing very well that the secretary would come out and tell me to ring the bell when necessary. Can't remember the system, but it was something like: 1 long bell ring ~~ hurry up and run to the school, as you had 5 minutes 2 long bells ~~ hurry up and line up in the basement (2 x 2....reminds me of Noah's Ark) hehehe 3 short bells ~~ proceed to your class Cheers.

Gary
Hope this pictures shows up,.....as I thought it was a nice shot of a very recognizable Verdun Landmark,.......... found it on Flick'r site,.................Looks kinda Cool, (I think)
This I think is a late night shot of Wellington Street.????????? I'm sure someone else can correctly identify it,...I'm only going by those neat looking clocks,..which I beleieve there was one in front of the Church on Wellington,.......& D'leglise???
Hi Les I think the church is the one at 5th and Verdun or Church and Wellington. Second is Church and Wellington. Remember the clock.. Let me know if I got the first one right... Lad
LES Great late nighrt shot of Wellington St.
I like all the lamp posts.
hi Levisjeans,...........it is a nice shot,.........You can almost feel that Real Quiet ' feeling after a light snow, whle walking down Wellington................
The picture is interesting. The cars look ancient but Jean Coutu has onlybeen in that location for about 30 years. Anyway, down on the right side you can see the yellow sign of Scotiabank. It has to be when the building behind the clock was a bank. For years it has been a restaurant. Ed
Hi Ed...It looks like it's you, me and John keeping the home fires burning Dianne
Ed...looks like it is you, me, John and Winston.....Paul is up and at his PC but he isn't into VC...too bad.....he is the Verdunite and he should be on this site, but, if he was on the site then I would have to behave!!!! Dianne

Les I like the good night picture of the big light.
I used to sit on my balconey On Melrose and watch that light go around and
around when I was little it amazed me . Then my parents would tell me if I
didn't go to bed the sand man would get me!This was a sure fire way to get me to
go straight to bed. I rememberf the men who would walk the sidwalks with shovels
of sand for the ice. I was sure these were the guys that would also put sand in
your eyes.
How's that for childhood trama? Ha Ha it worked
!
Hi Levis, I remember the light too but it was on top of the sun life building, whioch was the tallest building in Canada when we were young. The one in the picture above appears to be on Place Ville Marie. Ed
I see it's been a bit chilly back east,...... We're getting Ok temps but it's raining & has been Foggy at times,.... Do they still use that Olympic Village (Remember the building for housing the athletes)I imagine these are probably Condos??? the view wouldn't be bad from that building in either direction really..... ...........................Have Fun & Remember Verdun .........

Now that's a Verdun Lane,...........................................from 'Colin's Photo Album' in pur pictures section,..........Imagine We had fun playing in those lanes,..and on those rooftops,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Nowadays we have parents tearing out beautiful well made Jungle Jims ,because we think the kids aren't bright enough to not 'Eat' the treated wood..................hahahahahaha but we played amongst paint tins ,Oil trucks , Garbage Trucks ,..etcGarbage,,,,,,,,,,,etc etc ..................got love it
From 2003,................ Is this building now Condo's too ? Seems a lot of the pictures in the albums need some coaxing,as that familiar little white box with the red x in it ,is appearing instead of some of the photo's, I had to right click then it 'show picture' and it would appear,......
There were no baked potatoes nor dinner for us that night
Wendy

Hey Les,
Let me ask you a question.I'm new to the puter and this site.Often I come across pictures,or should I say blanks with a few dots in the top left hand corner and no pics appear. What do I do to see these pics?
Thanks
Wendy
Hi Wendy,...many times it may just be that whoever submitted the picture originally,.just deleted it,..You see you are allowed 3mb's of storage,..and each picture takes up some of that room,.So when people want to keep posting pictures ,they may have simply removed the picture,...but the text of the message stays,...and the spot where the picture was,.just shows as an empty box,.with a red x in the corner,.........But also you can try to 'right click' on that box with the red x,..and you can then click on 'show picture',.....if the picture is in fact there and for sdome reason just not showing up,then it may appear after the 'right click' deal.......... If you do come across a posted message ,that indicates that it is a picture you'd like to be able to see,..Then just ask one of us,..and if the person who posted it initially sees the msg. they may post it again for you,.....I can usually (or at least i will try ) to always find the picture or story in question,..and I'd be glad to post it again for you.......
Les. I am not able to get any of the pictures, even doing the right click. Oh well. Not going to let it frustrate me.

Hi Winston,.......... Are you talking about all the pictures ,or the ones in the Phtot Albums,....or the ones in the actual posted message ?? If this is only recently that you are experiencing this problem then suspect it is just problems with MSN itself,......and Hopefully they will clear this up ? but who knows,.....

Anne de Belveau Vets. Hosp.I know it's alot to ask, since I'm not sure of the yr.or anything. Thanks for your help.
Wendy

Now this is a Great Verdun picture,...................... ............................Spent some time under these old Redtops,.............. Thanks Metalman,.............a good Verdun Memory
.........and this one too ,says Verdun,.........saw that view many times walking home down Wellington,........ Funny how you can see the Big Apartment building at 6th & Wellington (had a swimming pool on the roof.indoor),...and you can see the Church so easily as well,.down at Church Av........and beyond that a skyscraper Downtown,,,,,,,Remember we thought it was a big deal to go Downtown,..yet it was really very close.......................Funny how our perspective changes ................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Great Front Page,...........................Thanks MaggieMck ,..I was thinking of that or the Red Top,................but the Wellington shot is perfect........ Good picture Metalman,...........................much Appreciated
Remember these Teddy Bears,.........I found this on the mcCord-Museum site ............and it reminded me of having one of these things,........and one of the eyes came off (I think I helped it..hahahah) but my mother sewed it back on,.and that seemed like a miracle ,.like she performed some sort of magical transplant ,thus fixing old Teddy once more.............. which is really odd,.cause I think I was 17..............hahahahahahah
Well that lost all of it's intended ,humour............without adding the picture .....see Spelling isn't the only short suit,..........being dropped on the old knoggan ,couldn't have helped..................as Wendy said the other day ,.maybe it wasn't that hard a hit,.but I'm starting to suspect,it may have been off the 2nd floor gallery.............................hahahahaha
Remember these old rulers? Word has it that old Maltby had 12 inches,.but He didn't Use it as a 'Rule'
Probably used it as a crutch, hehehe
Have a look at this .....we would have loved to have one ,that we didn't have to share......Show this to your kids, and see if they want to trade for their I-Pod ,.with a 1000 plus songs on it ,..................hahahaha Remember when the needle would start to wear,.or the record had a scratch in it causing the needle to'skip' & we would tape some coins on the arm, keeping the neddle firmly on the Records.......................hahahahahaha Nothing like forcing (what basically amounts to a Nail) down on your precious 45's that you probably bought at Buckley's the week before ,along with that sheet of paper ,with the list of the Top 40 ................ ..........Next time your kids complain,.threaten to get them one of these,Try wearing that around your neck,......................hahahahaha
Glo
hi Gloworm I know how you feel I still have a pile of 'em too.....hahahaha Was Blue Notes the store on Church Av,....just up from Wellington and on the West Side of Church,.right beside ols lady Macalherns Florist shop ? .and I think it was either beside or was part of the Model Shop,.....(plastic models,& hobbies, stuff) Yup also think it was $1.06 with tax or something like that.....???
Oh my goodness! We still have a record player just like that one!!! And an eight track player and two stereo turntables......the stuff we collect and keep!! Dianne
This message has been deleted by the author.
I Remember when my only older sister Graduated,.she got a 'Stereo HiFi Record Player' that had two speakers,....and they could detach from the turntable (which folded down out of a suitcase like thing),,,,,,and you could put the speakers maybe 3 or 4 feet away from the actual record............ Would wonders never cease...............hahahahahaha it all folded up into one large grey looking suitcase ,.complete with a handle on top to carry this thing...................................

Ok Sandy the knick knack things as presents rings abell sort,.of I used to save my allowance and the money I made at my oldmans shop (worked from an early age),......and bought all my family's Christmas Gifts from little stores along Wellington Street,.............Blue Notes although I don't Remember it exactly I must have been in it,..i somehow hace some sort of a visualization of it's sign,,,,,,,(poer of suggestion I guess) I will try to find an old picture of Wellington in my searches ,.and maybe we can get lucky and find Bluenotes,...............I can think of almost all the business's along that particular block,.but not sure exactly where you mean was it on the N side btwn 4th & 5th,.or??? the Bank of Montreal was right on the corner of 4th & Wellington S side,.....and Tusignant's Grocery was across the street roughly,.( Mr Tousignant was killed outside the bank doing a bank deposit),......... In any case Buckley's was generally my 1st choice,...and Church Av store next,...only because I lived down that area I guess,.............Great Memory sparker though
45's long gone, but look at my treasure.......not sure why I hung on to this, except that now it seems like a memory prompter for me.

Yes Sandy I'm not sure why that is ,.but a friend of mine years ago once told me that he noted that all Montrealer's are fiercly passionate about their City,.......and I had never thought of it that way,........but I think he was on to something,..because I Encompass all of Montreal like that,.,,,,,,,,,,,,, with ties to Griffintown,.PointStCharles,....Verdun........I certainly like being from ....Mun treal...........hahahahah but We do have a degree of nostalgia of our hometowns,...........(and only We can critique it)..............hahahahaha

Wendy When I saw the picture of Verdun High it made
me think of all the birds, mice ,hamsters, and goldfish we buried in the
gardens in front of the school. Everything we found dead or dying we put there.
Yeah, Hi Lynn,
Just getting on.I have'nt seen the picture yet but I remember one kitten of your's that died at birth, after giving it a ceremony of religious songs and a proper burial in a Eno box, we dug it up 4 wks later to look at the bones. We were morbid.LOL
Wendy
My recollection is that Blue Note Record Shop was on the South side of
Verdun Avenue, I believe between 4th and 3rd.

Glo
The mention of Larose studios ,.reminded me of two things,......Some really old photographs we have found and posted here on the site,.had the LARose monicker..........on them,..........the other thing is I always bought my 35mm film form a photo studio above 5th av Restaurant (Pof W),.but upstairs on the 2nd floor was where I went to buy fim ,.for either myself or my brother,.(when your the kid brother, you run errands,..........hahahaha) but I know I have posted pictures in the past fromsitting directly outside this spot on Wellington,.......I don't (or can't 100 percent ) Rememeber if it was LaRose Studios,......but it has to be the same place,................. Another memory prompt ..........Thank You Gang................easing me into senility....................hahahahahahah Reminds me of the guy who gets a phone call from his Mom,.who wants to smooth things over btwn her son & her son's father, who now has Alzheimers, ....She says to her son ,.Your Father wants you to come Home............ .......All is forgotten.................................................

Welcome to our group......
Hey Arby, I remember the Prince of Wales. It was one of the first restaurants to sell 7up. We walked all the down there because it was a full 7 ounces, one more than coke. Shortly after Pepsi topped them all with 12 ounces. Ed

Sandy, You were a cutie indeed! I remember La Rose. Seems he did all the school photos. Ah, yes, we Catholic girls were so sweet and quiet but watch out! It's the quiet ones, you have to worry about! Dolly

Wow has Nuns Island ever grown,.....................and there's plans for much more from what we hear.............. Winston I think you mentioned this building quite a whilw back,........ .............Although I may have posted this shot,.(can't Remember),..........the building of course is on StXavier,...................
An old Italian Grocery ,.listed as StZotique,. .............Could be a Store in any of our neighbourhoods ,the Corner Store, ..they are all quickly disappearing ..........................hard to make a living with all the Big Box Stores,.........Remember these corner stores would have a 'Book',.......for you to pick up a few things and then pay for them when payday came around.........................you got your name in the "Book" before the days of credit/debit cards,...........but it still goes on today,. try asking Costco to just put your name in the 'Book' ...............hahahahaha
Looks a little chilly at Peel & StCatherine,.......................... http://www.montrealcam.com/en-visitation.html ,,,These would be the days you want to be exploring montreal's Underground part of town,................... Remember the Planetarium,,,,,,,,,,,donated by Dow Brewery's,.................. a good photo of the Planetarium as well as all the Brewery Buildings in the background,.and the familiar old Crown of the Dow Brewery Logo,.......this must have been very close to the last days of Dow,.after the beer knocked off a feww patrons in Quebec,.and Dow immiately dumped 1000's of gallons of suds down the drain,.completely voluntary,.but the bad press, made it impossible for them to recover ........Is the Planetarium still called Dow Planetarium,,,,,,(I know it's still there as last summer was their 40th anniversary or something like that,.but i imagine the name has changed...........anyone out there know for sure???
I guess this answers my question,........it was donated to the City of Montreal & is operated by the City's Parks Department In July, 1964, Dow Brewery Limited announced that it was financing the construction of a planetarium on Chaboillez Square in Montreal, where the company's head office is located, The completed project, which cost $1,250,000, was donated to the City of Montreal in 1966: and is operated by the Parks Department.
Yup knew a few of those things,...I had some pictures of soem of the dilapadated almost ruins ,certainly abandoned buildings ,.and I think your right a conversion to Condos,.for some of them,.....I know the old Lowney's building is also converted to Condos,. I wasn't aware of the want to relocate the Planetarium to the East (end of montreal ,I guess you mean??) I guess they know that land would be very valuable in todays' market,....................the City's sure changing,........ Thanks for that info Btw:
Lad
the lad: Yes I heard that they had done something like that,.i didn't know it ran behind some of those new(er) houses,..nice way to get waterfront......... ........I haven't seen it myself yet,.have seen a few pictures of added greenspace all the way to the Harbour ...Looks good,.......Does Centrale still go right through the old Golf Course........................used to be a perfect 1/4 mile ,(if you went through the Stop sign in the middle)...............as long as you had a spotter,.......you could open her up along there...........(so I'm told ..hahahah) cause I wouldn't think of unleashing my Bigblock that would be illegal: hahahahahaha.................. There was along open space,....from (what were new streets at the time) would it have been from Bishop Power ,then a few more av's added (up to 14th is that possible??) and then a long gap,.and 35th, was on the far side....................
the lad: Is there any part of the old golf Course tha isn't develloped? Isn't the Protestant High School ,built around there somewhere?? It's been a while since I travelled that area,.so most of it is probably new(ish) Even on some of mt trips back to Montreal,.I just never really had cause to get out to those spots,................I will make a more detailed tour of Montreal & surrounding areas, when I can manage a trip back there next time,. .besides I have to get old DannyB to be my official tourguide ,.while we sample many of the City's offerings.......(food & booze)& sites of interest :
Just to clarify Les, LaSalle Blvd. still runs in front of the houses in question. They built a new road because it was cheaper than trying to straighten the dangerous curves in the old one. Ed
Natatorium : There was a time when us
girls would take a dive from the high board and all the boys would
be waiting in the water for us to lose the top off our swim suits. I guess the
life gards caught on and they wern't allow to tred water in the deep end. Lot's
of good times were spent at the Nat
the rooftop was the best we were starving after a
full day at the pool. It seemed the walk home was so
long.
Second Avenue
biking2006 I can't agree with you more
Crusty bread and peanut butter oh so good, Mom would send me to A&P to buy
crusty bread by the time I got home the heal of it was gone and a big
whole was through the middle. Remember the waxed Balonie they sliced it as thick
as you wanted it, you could take it home fry it up and enjoy ! these basic foods
are comfort food to me.
Lynn. I bet you girls dived into the pool just to try and lose the top, and make it look like an accident. Good girl Lynn Thanks Lynn....Now I remember who you are...LOOKING GOOOD.....
Winston
With tax season right around the corner, make sure to follow these few simple tips.
Hi Levisjeans It seemed that walk along the blvd. or Bannantyne was really long especially when it was one of those hot and sticky days....nothing like missing the bus and staring all the way down the street... Lad
how about those hotdogs on the roof of the nat... mmmm
Found these while surfing, and thought they were interesting. Wellington Street in 1904....wow look at the flooding.
The Grand Trunk Boating Club:
Heron Island.....1897
Linda those are interesting photos..Imagine Wellington Street under water!
Ed
I see in this mornings Gazette,.that the Verdun Hospital,.has now been hit by this C Difficile ??? I have heard of this over the past couple of years ,.but only in a few Hospitals in Quebec,.......What is this bug,.? It sounds almost like a Legionairres thing,....and it's killed quite a few people.....do they not know what it is? Verdun hospital hit by C. difficile http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=e5633df4-b239-4bb3-a94e-4e65a875b452&k=62530 .....there more to the story ,if you want to check it out ,.click on the link ..Sounds like they can't stop this thing???
Well in that article iy does say 'no deaths' reported at either a StJerome or the Verdun Hospital....... but it seems to me I've heard of this bug for a while ,and I thought it had claimed a few people ,???? Anyone else heard of this thing??
Dianne
Les at Christmas time this past year that bug was in one of our hospitals here in Halifax...that bug has been around for years. Dianne
Hi HappyDi ,...so it has been around for awhile,.I thought so. the precautions taken ie: gowns etc etc,.....almost sounds like the SARS thing in Toronto ,or as I mentioned the Legionairres Disease......Sounds a little scary,.if it's been around for over 10 years,& they have no idea where it comes from?? I was visiting a friend in the hospital here the other day,.and they have a sign at the entrance to the ward ,that mentions to wash your hands before going in,.and to wash them again on the way out,...and they've been doing this for a few years that I can Remember,......but it does get your attention:
Les here is a site that tellyou everything you want to know..or don't want to know about this virus. http://chealth.canoe.ca/channel_section_details.asp?text_id=2798&channel_id=1020&relation_id=8289 Dianne
Thanks Di ,.........Seems to explain ,it ...I try to stay out of hospitals anyway,.and I'm always aware of 'sickness' present when visitng one,... ............We just had a bunch of Lunatics in our gov't here in BC ,that just spent ,.a few hundred thousand dollars (not theirs of course.....hahahaha) to go into Hospitals Here,....and (get this) Teach the Health Care Workers How to Wash their F7&^%8ng Hands.............................hahahahahahah Have you ever heard of anything so stupid,...........Didn't we learn that when we were 2 or 3 years old,..................hahahahahaha Lunacy is Rampant..................... if an idiot like a DR or a Nurse (aka Health Care Worker) ......doesn't know how to wash their hands,.then Fire Them (preferably out a window..............with the money)....hahahahah
Les that is so crazy spending money to teach health care people how to wash their hands...but, how many people don't wash their hands after using the washroom? Something so simple as washing hands can prevent many diseases. Well, I am off to wash my hands again!!!! Dianne
HappyDi,................ apprently some of the dirtiest surfaces we come in contact with,.....are things like 'keyboards' YIKES ,.where'd ya go ..hahahahaha also shopping cart handles ,.etc etc ... with Bacteria Counts higher than that of some Toilet Seats.......................hahahahahah Always reminds me of the Parent who freaks out when their kid drops a sandwhich on the kitchen floor ,.and immediately tells the kid "Don't touch that ,.or don't eat that it's dirty"....then when there out camping or at the park and the Parent drops the kids hotdog,..she picks it up ,brushes it off,...gives it to the kid,.and says "a little Dirt ,won't kill ya"...........hahahaha
Since it's lunchtime here (westcoast time) ,I thought I'd post this picture of a very busy (at one time) & frequented by both VHS & VCHS students ,as well as many other Verdun characters,.......................You'd get Pogo's & cup of mustard.,.or Fries wraped in the newspaper,.......or a steamie etc etc ,.. Does anyone out there have an old photo of the old Barry's Fish & Chips??
Was Barry's Fish and Chips on Bannantyne between Argyle and Woodland ?
Hi Donna Right where the red store is... Lad
HI part 2 Nice job of parking...... Lad
HI part 3 Just thought of something...hope he wasn't passing on the inside there... Then again......they always said we were crazy....and the drivers from home were just plain nuts... Lad
Les, In our day it was called 'Barney's Fish and Chips'. Barney Ross was Barry Ross's Father. Barry carried on the business. Ed
...........and after Barry,...............one of our friends who worked there also ran it for a while,.........
Remember how hard the firefighters in Montreal worked,...........it seems there was always a fire somewhere Seems like they were always working on something,.............. Remember when we were kids and the Firemen would come up to the stadium,.and spray their hises,.and let us kids hang on to the hose to see what power was in them,............and they used to also hold out that mat (trampoline thing) that they used to catch people who would jump from burning buildings,...............we used to jump off the concession stand roof, into those mats ...........the City of Verdun,.was actually pretty good to us kids,.......from the rinks to the parks,...and all those neat olympic style events we had at the Stadium,....us -----against other areas of Montreal:
there's a name from the past..brian blackburn.... good guy .... i remember him well.. whatever happened to him Les?
Hi; Pictures are from Connaught School, Ville Emard, Grade 2 1937. In the picture with the 4 boys standing, I'm dressed in white with long pants During the 6th. Grade, the school had to be shut down for repairs, we were sent to subsitute schools, I went to Woodland / Verdun. Had a lot of lunches around the corner on Verdun ave. Fish & Chips, very good & greasy My Farther also attened Connaught School. It was during its first year it opened
A nice shot of the Lighthouse in Lachine.............. .............................complete with ice in the River.......................
Les I like the picture of the lighthouse. It must have been taken at sunset as the view is facing south west, I think. Dianne
Hi Di your probably right ,.the guy sure caught some nice colour in the shot: Remember on those nice Sunny Winter days,.that as soon as the Sun disappeared ,.you could feel the Cold just come over the city,........where on a day like that one ,you would have your coat undone and enjoying the Sun,. but it got done up quick with the wind that always came off the River,,,,,,,,, It's nice to get the sunshine,.makes Winter bearable,........not like that always here on the coast,....so when the Sun's out we appreciate it,.........been nice here lately though,......what's happenning on your end of the Country,....
Maybe it isn't a lighthouse at all, maybe it is a relative of Mr. Maltby's! Dianne
A nice shot off the mountain,..with the sun shinning ,,,,,,,and Montreal getting ready for nightime: Funny how our whole thinking used to change ,when nightime rolled around,.get ready to head out & party,..............the City just came alive:
that last shot I suppose could be a sunrise,.but with the inside of the railing seemingly lit by a sunlight,.I would think it's sunset,.as that's where the Sun would have to be to illuminate the insde of the railing at the Lookout Chalet
Dianne
...............................Good Morning Montreal.................................................. .......................You knew it was Cold ,when you would see all the steam rising from the River ,or the Vents on the top of the buildings...........Brrrrrrrr..
Yes ...don't say it....................shhhh ,theh same will happen here,a new storm will be here in minutes ,.to guarantee it ,.all I have to do is wash the car.....hahahaha (which I was going to do yesterday),........
....Seen this a few times.......:
Mom45 ,.................I thought you might want to save this one for referance next December,............ ....................hmmmm hahahahahahahahaha
Seeeeee.........we could all call ourselves writers.......
Cheers.
Interesting picture from Ile Perrot,.......................nice colour
Remember having to dig out after a Montreal Snowstorm,............and then having to drive in those ruts in the middle of the road ,on every avenue until they got those plows out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, .......also just walking down the sidewalk over those snowbanks we used to get, after a heavy dump of the white stuff,.......
Re Message 172:
Les where do you dig up these fantastic pictures? This last one digs deep good buddy.
Bill
I meant the picture in the 173 post., although they are all good.
It was #172, I'm losing it.
As a child, cold nights on the Avenues during or after a snow storm had that sad mystical quality to it sometimes. Feeling unsafe, and not protected. That powerful picture brought it back to me.
S.A.
Les You have done it again!! some great
photo"s Thanks
Remember getting up at 5:00 am to start shoveling
out your car to go to work after being out at the bars half the night. As soon
as you would get your car out somebody #! # would take your
spot!
Cheers,
Mom'; Found another picture from Connaught School Grade 7, hope it gest attached . Ron
Mom Am trying again after re reading Les's instructions
Mom I giving up on pictures
Hi Touchy826 What year is that picture? Lad
Hey Ron ~~~~ if at first (or 24th) you don't succeed, try, try again. Thanks for the effort and thought, though. Cheers.
Laurie
Maureen HF Would you have known my brothers Errol or Russell Etienne. They went to Connaught in that era. Laurie.
Laurie, did your brother work at an insurance company in the mid seventies?
Linda - thats a cute pic you posted of yourself. It reminded me of the little girl in my favourite program I used to watch, Maggie Muggins. Laurie
No, one is an artist and one is an engineer. Did you know of an Etienne. My brother is working on a family tree - so we are collecting as many names as possible Laurie
Laurie ~ What a hoot.....my favourite program was Maggie Muggins. Thanks for bringing that memory back.
Not sure of the last name but Errol can't be a very common first name and I thought if I didn't ask, I'd never know.
