Anyone out there remember a restaurant that the patrons called Ma's across the street from Woodland school...I can't remember the real name of the place but a LOT of friends I haven't seen in years used to hang out there (below the pool hall)...I think that it may have been owned by the Kafenzakis family?

Here you go Cathy a slice from the past: Verdun Ave circa 1960 - check out Miss Verdun Restaurant at 5206 and Costas Kafenzakis 5302 Verdun Ave.
The actual name of the restaurant was Miss Verdun's and it was owned by the Kavenzakis family. "Ma" died several years ago I heard but her husband Kosta was still alive. They have a daughter Katrina, and sons, Mike, Nick and Jimmy. I spent many a lunch hour and after school time there. Connie
HI ALL...DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHEN IT BECAME KNOWN AS MA'S BUT BEFORE THAT IN 1960-2 ISH IT THE SIGN OVER THE DOOR WAS LUCY'S...HOPE THAT HELPS/..LATER JUNE
I know this post is 7 years old, but I'd like to bring some clarifications. Miss Verdun's was owned by my great grandmother, Maria Kafenzakis (Ma) who is still alive today, as are her children, Katina (my grandmother), Mike, Nick and Jimmy. They all live in Montreal, except Jimmy who is in Greece.
In reference to Ma's restaurant or Miss Verdun; Yes! It was owned by the Kafenzakis family. The father has since passed away, but Mom is alive and living in a residence home, at 97 years old. As for the children: James lives in Greece
Nick, in Ottawa, and Mike and Katina, live in Laval and Candiac, respectively, The children are all married and have their own children. There are even 9 great-grandchildren.
Mike Kafenzakis (son)
Thank you Mike for a great update to this topic. I know a lot of people pass by this way & read the stories & I appreciate all the updates. Glad to hear Mom is still going strong. I generally just monitor this site these days ,but may someday be a little more active in it's day to day existence. Thanks again Mike for adding to Verdun's history. Cheers ! Les
