Verdun/Montreal Places & Stuff
Remember when Nuns Island had only the farm & ruins of the Nuns residence/convent???
I wonder why it stood in such ruins, why was it only partially torn down,.was this the result of people dismantling it a little at a time or ???
Thanks metalman,...........that looks pretty Grim,.a lot of history had passes through those doors,.....thanks to you and DannyB for keeping us on top of that..YIKES,.that looks Nasty....................Scary stuff,.............but there goes more of Our Verdun History,................................ps" Metalman is that your rig in front of the story,.?Looks Good.....but I didn't think yours had the logo on it,?? thanks Again for takinmg the time & effort to share this with us

OMG.......I am just devastated!!! Kosta's was our 'home away from home' in the mid-50's. That's where we 'became smokers'....cough, cough, cough. They had the best cherry cokes and fries with gravy...m-m-m. I shouldn't be telling you this but on Sunday mornings, Heather M.'s mom and my mom would give us money for 'collection' and send us off to Mass at St Thomas More with her little brother Danny and my little sister Harriett. Well, we had to walk past Kosta's...so.....Heather and I would stop off at the restaurant for our coke, fries and ciggies(using part of the 'collection' money) and we would send Harriett and Danny off to church with a nickel for 'collection' and tell them to pick up the church bulletin and bring it back to us at Kosta's after Mass and we would give them a nickel as bribery money. Then we'd all go home, hand over the church bulletin to our parents like good little Christian youngsters. Do you think we'll go to Hell for that??? Lying, bribery, smoking...tsk, tsk. Does anyone else have any 'confessions' that they'd like to get off their chests??? judy in NB
Newfydog9,...You will be (or I will be 0 in Good Company it seems I used to divert the collection money destined for StWillibrord's collection plate via the Candy Store near the lane ,........but I did go and get my own Bulletin to bring home (sort of like our proof or ticket stub of our attendance.........hahahaha)......................see ya in Hell ,.save me a seat ,sounds like it might be crowded.........hahahahah
Well just surfing ...........and still looking for the requested pics by a few,..........felt I had to at least post something ,........while still searching,I found the old picture (not that old cause it's been moved closer to 1st av from it's original perch right dead center of the park: ...... and without the Verdun (& many others) characters who aren't here to participate with us(at least in person),...........this is a very befitting Monument....................because without these characters,.we would not be posting anything ......................Remember this was ,the first spot (in this park),.that we must all RememberI know the pictures large,........................but so are the characters We never got to know,.....................I think they's all have liked to be members hereThey'd Love to talk of being Home in Verdun/Montreal...........and walking on the Boardwalk or whatever,...............
Now these kids depict Verdun hockey Teams,........................ and these were some of the first Helmets used,....because alot of teams could still play without the Helmet (for a while),...................... but look at the Shack in the background....................Now that was a spot wasn't it,............barely kept the wind off you,..but it worked for generations,........Remember the ice inside the box./////and that bench,.....I think it was colder in there than on the rink,..... What Say You............................... the picture is large but appreciate it for what it is:Look at all the equipment,...............and all the Hand Me Down Skates ,that we were so happy to get,....................Some might fit for a couple of years. hahahahahha and a new stick ,.baby you better make that thing last, but the broken ones could be lent out to someone who didn't have one,.......Obviously you would use the best of your collection (in the shed) of good sticks and Ok sticks.....................hahahahaha
No mention of cannon in this article.
To the glory of God and in grateful memory of men of Verdun who fell in the great war. Aussi dédié à la mémoire de ceux qui tombèrent durant la deuxième guerre mondaile 1939-1945. Also dedicated in reverent memory to those who fell in world war II. Somme. Amiens. Arras. Drocourt. At the base of the monument is a female figure, symbolic of patriotism and peace, holding in her right hand the flags of Victory and supporting with her left hand a shield bearing the arms of the City of Verdun. See above for the inscriptions on the base of the statue. Commemorative ceremonies are organised by the Canadian Royal Legion. The memorial undergoes regular maintenance with, in particular, a hot oil treatment.
I meant to mention that the Hockey Team in the previous post was circa 1960but I think it's easily related too............. Kids are Kids ...........and hockey is Hockey............. Have Fun and Remember Verdun........................................
Yes Arbutus an this Monument I have seen referance to it being located in this park in '63 I believe it was,...prior to that it was in the little triangular shaped park btwn,.Wellington & Lasalle Blvd,.across from Poisson Hall, corner of LAfleur & Lasalle,.....and also across from the old Labelle BBQ,........this is the park that I think the Cannons were in (at least at one time),...it sure would be interesting to see some old photographs from this time,....I will keep searching and you can rest assured ,that when I do find a pic that any of us have mentioned ,.I will do my best to Remember to post it "............Yikes.........I hate committment.............hahahahaha
Hi Dianne - We live in a sleepy little town called Hampton which is half way between Saint John and Sussex.....only 10 hrs drive to Montreal, 4 hrs to Halifax. We moved down here in 1984 from Labrador where we had lived for over 20 years - now THAT was a great place!!! My husband worked in the mines and I worked in the mine office. Where do you live in NS? We go down to the Lunenburg Folk Festival every August? It is such a pretty area. Are you near there? judy in NB
I'll save you a GOOD seat, Les! In regard to the cannons, I know exactly what little park you're talking about. Somewhere I have photos of my fat little bottom crawling all over the statue that was in the middle of that park. I don't know if I have cannon photos though. I'll try to find them and put them on VC. Does anyone remember the other little park that was at the end of Rushbrooke street where Wellington, Rushbrooke and I think Strathmore met up. My grandmother on my mother's side was a 'Grenier' and when I was small, she told me that that little park was named after one of my 'Grenier' ancestors. I think it would be neat to find out about that.....where would I look? Does anyone remember Rosaire's Bakery on Wellington street in that same area? That's where I got my love of 'Milles Feuilles' with custard...m-m-m. I think they're called 'Napoleons' in English. No wonder I had(and still have...groan) a 'fat little bottom'.........haha. judy in NB
Re Hockey in Verdun Great to see old pics. Anyone remember that all the parks had own teams...different leagues...even little league for baseball...could tell what park a kid was from when he would tell who he played for or when he wore his cap or sweater... See the crest would that be a name of Church on there? Great helmets too.... Lad
Hi Judy: I live in the small, but growing community of Beaver Bank, which is near Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. We are not far from the airport and not far from Halifax. We go to Lunenburg quite often, love the south shore drive. One of my daughters lives on the Kingston Peninsula, so we visit quite often and know exactly where Hampton is. That area is beautiful. What a small world! Dianne
Judy.....newfydog,...Mille Feuilles,....I used to love those things,..even though I don't eat much sweets now,.........I still think I'd like one of those...we don't seem to have them out here (might be a good thing),.......hahahahabut we do have something they call a Nanaimo Bar,...............another sweet type of dessert...................................
Ahh Haa..............another mistake by the museums,...........Have another look at the Hockey Photo in #420 msg,.....the site where I got it says,........1960 Verdun,...........but have a look in the far background,.there's Plc Victoria,.and you can also see a bit of Place Ville Marie,..........both those buildings would not have existed in 1960,.........There was a big hole in the ground for years until they started the actual Plc Ville Marie building,,,,,,,,,,Who's documenting these things.........................hahahahaha
Hi Dianne - You're right - it sure is a 'small world! Yes, I know where Beaverbank is. Many years ago I was in the RCAF(1960-63) as a radar operator. We were on what was called the Pinetree Line which was a row of Radar Stations which stretched across the country just north of the US border. I was in two places - Lac St Denis QC just outside of Morin Heights and also in Foymount ON half way between Pembroke and Renfrew. Anyway, Beaverbank was also a radar station back then on the same Line. Years ago, my husband and the dogs(of course) drove down around the South Shore - it is so pretty all along there. We'll have to do it again sometime and if we do, I'll look you up. Where is your daughter on the Kingston Peninsula? I might even know her - now wouldn't that be something? My e-mail addie is: djmcnab@nbnet.nb.ca if you want to contact me. Take care - judy in NB
Hi Judy, I see you already know about the Pinetree Site your listed there. I was an MSE Tech stationed at Lamacaza north of St Jovite, the Bomarc base. We occasionally got down to Lac St Denis to play softball. It was a beautiful base ALL THOSE GORGEOUS WAC's. Who cared about the scenery. Gary Mace Saanich, BC
Hi Judy... I know where the Radar Station was in Beaver Bank, we lived in the PMQ's our first year that we lived in Nova Scotia...34 years ago....last year every building was torn down and a new housing development is going to be built there. My daughter's in laws name is Nisbet and they all live in the Summerville area....the family has been there since the early 1800's. When we go there we take the Quispamsis ferry at Gondola Point. I have your email and I will contact you so you can delete that message if you want. This is amazing! Dianne
CPR police badge,...........................................still looking for the club photo ............... Remember Groucho Marx saying to someone "I've got a good mind ,to join a club,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and Beat you over the Head with it".........hahahahaha.We'll try to find tthat picture of your Dad with the billyclub........(I love that story,.and can't wait to find that picture..................hahahahah
verdun is a total different place today when i go there and tour i'm just a stranger in a different place. when you go to a store, restaurant, and tell the new owner about verdun years back no interest at all. there's lots of new families living in verdun today. we are from the generation industry, its gone a new generation took over. i will in the near future, go down everystreet in verdun take hundreds of pictures. even i'll talk to the new generation verduners and find out what's going on. yes its not the same its changed big time if you go there for a visit make it fast and live it up in montreal downtown, you won't regret montreal nite life.
Gary, Gary, Gary!!! Thanks for the "gorgeous WAC's" compliment but we weren't WAC's.....eek! That's the Women's Army Corps! I don't think we had any fancy acronyms - just 'airmen' and 'airwomen'. I played softball when I was stationed in Lac St Denis too - first baseman...I mean woman.....whatever!. We did go up to Mont Apica to play once. I had also gone to Bagotville for swimming and to St Hubert for broomball. Gawd - I'm reading this back and it looks like I was almost 'athletic'......whatever happened to me and my poor body since then?!?!? Did you know any of the Techs in St Denis? Bob Kane?? Roger Hornsby?? There is a Pinetree website: www.pinetreeline.org You might see some familiar stuff on it. judy in NB
Hello again Gary - Oops! I just realized that you had already mentioned the Pinetree site....sorry about that! Just having another 'senior moment'. judy in NB
Just came across this different view of the old Turcotte area ,.and aerial of the Canal etc etc.............................. A- Centre Gadbois B- Falaise St. Jacques C- Turcot Interchange D- Turcot Yards E- Angrignon Interchange F- Lachine Canal G- Canada Malting Plant H- Aqueduct The Riviere Saint Pierre would have flowed roughly like this. There is an enourmous amount of water in this area so it isn’t hard to imagine a lake being in the area of Turcot. Fascinating, isn’t it? ..Found these on the Walking Turcotte Yards site,..............one of our members here wrote a few piecs for that site,.
I have asked this before, but I don't recall what the answer was,....but is there still a Poolhall above that Provigo ? (used to be a Handy Andy at one time,...but we spent a little time in there (the Poolhall ,that is, not Handy Andy.......hahahahaVerdun & Desmarchais.....................
How old is this bridge? Still standing after all these years,........ -kind of a neat old bridge ,I wonder why it was the only one built along the Acqueduc that had any real 'style ' to it..............?How many bridges were there, and I wonder why only the one different style?was it because it was sort of an 'entrance to Verdun /Ville Emard ,Remember as you came over the bridge towards Verdun,.there was the 'Welcome to Verdun' sign, stating the population,...etc etc .......a big Green & White sign,...........but you would think the bridge at Church Av would have been considered the first Entrance to Verdun.........????
Les.....thanks for posting the picture of the bridge...I walked over that bridge many times on my way to the Library, the Y on Gordon, the Nat or to visit friends who lived in Verdun. Dianne
Construction on the Acqueduct started in 1852,.and officially opened in 1856 Buildings - Montreal Aqueduct The construction of Montr챕al's Aqueduct Canal dates back to 1852. The aqueduct was opened in 1856, but as of the following year, periodic expansion was required to meet demand. Verdun's Aqueduct building dates from 1911. Architect Georges Janin designed it. Although access to running water became widespread in the 20th century, its quality proved the source of many infectious diseases .......................I also Remember when the City started to ad fluoride to the water system,..............I think it was around 1968ish roughly......??????
Hi HappyDi,.you just made me think of all the people ,that must have used that bridge, yet,........I can't Remember ever seeing People on it,...other than using it ourselves,.(not cars ,.....but pedestrians)............Although I do Remember seeing kids going over the top,.but just casual use ,..I don't picture it........
Les....The Cote St Paul / Ville Emard kids used it a lot going to the places I mentioned.. The kids walking to VHS would have used Woodland Bridge, because of its proximity to the school.. I never saw any kids walking over the top of the arches! Must have been after my time.....I bet you walked on the arches!!! LOl!!! Dianne
Here's an interesting observation ,.taken from an article called the Kristian Prospective................... If you stick around here long enough, you develop a lot of local reflex associations with things outsiders wouldn’t understand. For example, give a real Montrealer a phone number starting with 76 and he’ll picture Verdun’s aqueduct and flats with solid wood floors and girls who dye their hair black. And to those who know this burg, phone numbers beginning with 48 sing West End as loudly as the unscrubbed karaoke offenders at Maz. To hardcore Mtl-ers, numbers starting with 69 elicit visions of lawns and bungalows in little Ontario, also known as the West Island. Numeros starting with 27 evoke the multi-accented ride up Park Avenue. Now people are popping up with rootless cell phone numbers that start with combinations like 867 and 655 and 804. It’s disorienting. It’s a tough knock for us with old notions. ........................................................he has written some different stuff re: the City we all know as Montreal.............(even mentioned those 'missing cows' in one of his articles.............(see i had to slip that in there didn't I)I think it may be easier to find Jimmy Hoffa,......than those old 3d cows,(Lol) http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/120805/kristian.html read the whole article if you feel so inclined,.................................
4th av bridge used this night: ..........................................................Not Fun being trapped on the wrong side of the Bridge...............hahahahahaha
Hi Les, yes the pool hall is still there but under new ownership. Apparently he is going to make it into a bar and have live bands there....according to my friend he has already started the renovation process. It is open but not finished and there are still pool tables. Hope you are well. D
Thank You Donna ,.....I will have to check it out one day,......I suppose it will be one of those 'Resto Bars/Pubs' to get around the drinking laws,.or has that also changed and Verdun now has pubs??............Mind you anyone could always find an accomodating source ,.all the while still maintaning the Holier than Thow position,.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahaha That place would hold quite a few people ,I'd imagine,.it held a lot of 6x12 tables,at on e time,....a lot of floor space there.I would think the surrounding neighbours may not appreciatee it,if it's loud bands.............. Thanks for that info
Remember climbing those poles to put the clotheline back on the pulley, that you probably caused by trying to throw that excess loine that was always tied up on the end of the line,.and you'd throw it as hard as you could to see if it would go all the way to the pole.......hahahahahahWhy did our parnets never cut that big excess part of the rope off & use it for something else,.it's not like you were going to move to a 'longer laneway'Sorry in advance for the size of this picture:Well that's not as large as it was when I found it,............a Springtime lane,.Well it's not far off now anyway,....................I love the way all the poles are leaning everywhich way ...........hahahahaha
Here's another lane shot,............................checkout how deep the snow is when the kids are resting their feet on the top bar of a swing set...............hahahahaI love the sheds and catwalks in the background............................
My guess would be ,we've all been here a few times:Remember going out to the airport just to sit and watch the Planes taking off & coming in,...................(and oh yea ,to drink beer in the lounge...hahaha)
how come the terminal never is this empty when I'm trying to board a flight.........hahahahahaha....Have times ever changed ,.........now they won't even let you on with a gun or something..........................
I was told that I have to have a doctor's letter stating that I am a diabetic and use insulin, as they don't want needles and lancets in the cabin. Haven't tested their theory yet, as we travel by air.....in the tires that is.....lol. Picky, picky, picky.
here's a different old site,.with all kinds of stuff on it............................. http://www.20six.fr/anneesvinyl http://site.voila.fr/annees_vinyl Smokey Joe's Cafe is the song playing on this part of the same site................ I was looking for montreal tpye stuff,..................(if you open the main page a song starts playing,.and you Can turn it off, just look for the player and click the pause button............................but it has a whole pile of stuff on here, seems 50ish in theme,..but I haven't checked out the whole thing,.....It may be of interest to some ,.........................then again maybe not psssssssssst: it's not mandatory,............hahahahahahah
Meant to ad the picture too...........................just because I thought it was kinda of neat..............or something like that.Funny thing is I like that song ,.and have it on an album by the Coasters (CD too)........................................................
Here's a view most of us have experienced:Looking out a window and seeing how brite everything was with that new dump of snow,.........................................................There are times when the white stuff ,looks alright................................ (generally when it's somewhere else........hahahaha)Wintertime is inevitable,..................................a fact of lifeany of you ever skate here ???
hi Donna I'm breathing in & out ,right here in Victoria BC ,(so far) .....and according to our advertising that MaggieMck reffered too apparently I'm breathing faster & faster..........hahahahahha
Just an old shot of the stairs at Mont Royal.................................they always seemed to be a wonder in themselves at how long they were:Here's a pic taken from a rooftop,....near the Molson Stadium (you can see the lights of the stdium in the background)
Before I even got to the bottom of your post, I was thinking "That is fascinating". No kidding! I had even done a bit a research about the Riviere St. Pierre and where it would have flowed using a variety of maps including those from the BNQ archives.
Darn, they didn't quite get Lavy's in the photo shot at the bottom left, but at least you can see where the Barina was. My brother tells me that La Barina, near Church & St. Patrick, is where the guys from Dosco would go with their paycheques after the shift ended on payday.
Les, It is amazing the information that a photo can reveal. I estimate the year as the early 30s judging from the auto and the clothing. Also the old sheds. Notice someone must be washing his car in the garage as you can see the water trickling to the midddle of the lane. Can anyone make other observasions. Guy
Guy ~ I see garages in every yard, in addition to the sheds, but there doesn't seem to be any fences. I love the posts and they way they seem to weave a pattern down the laneway. Also, the laneway seems to be cement....most of the lanes in Ville Emard were dirt. Cheers.
Hey Les! The picture of 'Leonards' (Message 196) Looks like the SCENARIO that I grew up around on the Southwest corner of 1st Ave and Verdun Ave. Around 1948 the store was called Mogul's ( I delivered groceries on my bike for them , a Jewish family , tips were good but the pay was lousy. Like $2.00 for a long day's work 8AM til 7PM ) I used to peddle way out to Valiquette sometimes. The Candy store, next door, was run by an Englishman, his wife and two daughters. They lived just around the corner on 1st Ave. That's where our pennies and nickels went. Ahh, memories bounce back when I look at all those great photos! The Flats, Parks, tobogganning and buildings. Skiing on Mount Royal was a blast! "Thanks for the Memories!" sez Victah
Another neat photo of the old Haraki Bar in Ville Lasalle,........many trips were made btwn Bert's & the Haraki ,in the old days,.they usually would have a band .....and it was a fun place,..................I think they had a little bakery right next door ,where they sold those big square pizza bread tthings.(hardly a pizza,) but it was food for the hollow, when a quick snack was needed:Thanks for Picture Metalman...........................
brownblvd: You asked what year that map of Turcot yards wass from,.I'm not sure ,but I will try to find out for you in the meantinme here's an old map depicting the same area & river,.this one is from 1931 mapI'll keep looking to find the info on the other one,.....................
Good job done here capturing the Lightning Bolt ...........under a black sky.Remember how Black the sky couuld turn in seconds ,..you could almost feel that Black Cloud come over the city ,.temps dropped ,.and then you knew to run for cover ,cause it was going to pour any minute...........People on Wellington make a run for a doorway......hahahahah Those were fun...........................................or if you were having a BBQ you had to quickly gather up everything ,.and get inside ,..then there'd be a real downpour,...and then it's over ,.and your bringing everything back out again..............
Ok had to ad a few more...........Remember this first old building?..........Front Lawns .....where'd they get these...........................Seems to be the same site that produced those stairs with the birds on them last week,...................................
Yes Thanks maybelle (June) ,..I will hope to visit the old haunt oneday,.......\but I doubt I recognise much ,.as the whole town is changing,.........but that's what visiting is all about ,to Remember things the way they once were,.....and of course to see how it's been changed,..........................I was told that it's being reno'd into a Quasi-Bar with Live Bands ??................. a visit in the next few years would be nice,.......besides DannyB has cleared his calendar for me ,for the next two years,............... Yikes ,that's alot of visiting,...........................hahahahahahah Thanks Again
Absolutely right June (maybelle) ,..it looks a little sad from when it had that Great Marquis,& entrance ,.and those aluminum windows ,where you could check & see what movies were going to be coming ,.Those were big deals ,as I recallI lived right beside the Savoy at one time,..my brother & his friend Gilles worked as delivery boyus for Dube's Store which was right beside the Savoy at one time ,.but moved around the corner onto Rielle to make room for that store you can barely see in the 2nd picture,.....was it called O'slunds or something like that.....................
Remember when tey started to build the Champlain Bridge:...........................................Here's a real earlier inthe construction shot of the support Pillars,.that would eventually carry tens of thousands of us ,over to the south shore,.for .25cents or one of those Bridge Tokens............Remember how neat it was as a kid to get to go across a bridge..............Yahoo
how about this major project,....a joint effort between the USofA & Canada.....lots of Major infrastructure was hapenning in those days,.....Building the Seaway was a fantastic project,........that made both these country's extremely profitable.........................Sadly we don't seem to embark on these mega -projects anymore,..Nor do we seem to fix up our other infrastructure.........Where once we had the pride of the worls highways ,.& byways,.& Freeways,...........................now we have potholes,.while other Country's surge to the forefront...................................
Well I was supposed to put the picture of the Seaway in that last post,..........alot of thought & effort into that Seaway,.....and yet we pretty much took it for granted,......................................................
It's been a while since I have toured Verdun but I am thinking maybe it is closer to the de L'Eglise ( but not de L'Eglise itself ) area either on Bannantyne or Verdun Ave ???
Hi Donna ,...I posted another picture yesterday,.and after I did I realised it's the same store,....just from a different vantage point: Here are both of them:the next shot is in post #470It's been identified as the old Second Avenue Restaurant(2nd & Verdun,of course) ........and in looking at the other view I can see how that is probably the answer,...............Sure looks different to me,........We had a few Pizzas in there from time to time,....................
Yes ,funny you mention those HappyDi2,....I was looking at those ,and I just couldn't Remember those particular ones above that Restaurant ,........Those were the gallery's (that as kids) we all wanted to have ,.cause they would be wide enough to play hockey on,when your little......hahahahaI Remember walking into the Restaurant ,many times ,..but I just didn't Remember those big balcony's Gallery's Porch's or Veranda's (I'm going with Front Gallery ,since it's Verdun)..........hahahahaha
I love the galleries on the building on the far left of the picture. They remind me of rooms, with their archways, and it seems like they are built "into" the building instead of being built "onto" the building. I imagine they were totally practical also when there was a rain storm (or snow storm hehehe). Cheers
Hi Les In the 2nd ave photo in the second one you can see the old carpet store at the corner of 3rd.I think its gone now...right across the street from the old Currie's market... Lad
Religous Processions ,were common,.in Verdun (Montreal) and it seemed they had a lot of them ,.as well as all the Church Bells ringing on every Sunday,.as well as some of those events,..............Quite the rituals ,when you think of it,........Also Remember all those Funerals with People marching along behind the Hearse,..............where did they originate from,.?? because now a days you go to a Funeral Parlour or to the actual Funeral at the Church,...and when that's over the Hearse (accompanied by some family members,in a couple of other cars) head off right from the Churchj to the Cemetary of their choice,..........So where did the ones we used to see in Verdun,go to or from?we didn't have a graveyard that I can recall being used in Verdun proper??Know where the bottom photo is taken?? I posted this a few years back ,.and DannyB got it right away,............................Know where?????
Les Hi first thing picture reminds me of is 3rd and Verdun... did u get my messsage about where I could find paper clipping from 68? Let me know if I got picture...thanks bro.. Lad
Yes that's right ......................here's another' .......Checkout the 'Deadman Walking' the big top hat,.....walking in front of the Hearse,..and the 'clansmen' alongside the Hearse,.....were these guys Knights of C ??? there is an emblem / crest on those capes,.So I am guessing it's something like the Knights of C....or similar?? Someone out there ,probably knows a little better,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the lad: I did orginally scan the article ,.so I'll have to look dig it out again ,.and post it again,.I usually leave pics in the msg's ,but I must have had that one directly from 'my pics' and then cleared my storage space???
Summer '68 (August) ............excerpt from Montreal Star (fairly sure it was the Star ,.may have been Gazette)I've had this thing since the day it came out in the paper,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (why we keep this stuff, I don't know)hahahahahaha ..................................It's not exactly something that I would put on the wall with some of mu other plaques,...............hahahahaha......................it's getting near 40 years old and may be a little difficult to make out,....but it was an interesting evening,........................hahahahah

Les, I participated many times at those funeral processions in the 40s wich would start at the funeral parlor and end at the church for the funeral ceremony. I think your picture depicts a religeous celebration and we certainly had many of those in my time. Thanks for the memories. Guy

Remember how cool & modern it was to drive along the elevated highways,..with those lights that ran along the top edge of the walls (like a lit up railing) .....but it was an engineering mistake,.due to the winter wether conditions in Montreal those lights got covered with mud ,sand ,dirt & snow,...and so they couldn't do their job of illuminating the roadway as it was intendedto do,..amd so the regular type of lamp standards had to be installed,.......................................but it did look good fro the Summer of '67.
Look at this different type of Horse Drawn Milk Truck,............it looks a lot like those Boler Trailers,...this thing would be way ahead of it's time ,.wouldn't it?.........Do we have any members that live over on the South Shore these days?

Les What a city ! Montreal Mon Amour ! The photo of the city at night is so beautiful. Boy do I miss it. In my heart it is still home. Familar and Comforting. I don't think there was a street in Verdun that there wasn't somone I knew. You could walk at night and feel safe that there was a family on that street who would help you if needed. I know I've said it before , but I'll say it again The view from the mountain lookout was so romantic at night!! Les Im feeling fuzzy inside! Thanks Lynn
There are quite a few sites and blogs re: Turcot Yards. I found this one interesting. There seems to be several groups that explore abandoned buildings and then post their pictures on the Net and this one is on Turcot..interesting photos. http://uem.minimanga.com/abandoned/turcot/ Dianne
HiDi,.there has been a lot of interest in Turcot Yards over the past year or so,.and many more sites popping up for sure,.One of our members was one of the first I had heard of ,.in the 'Walking Turcot Yards' site ,.as for the abandoned buildings site,.this is interesating too,.We' ve been posting some of their stuff for several years now,.A few groups that do the same thing (explore abandoned sites) have seemingly joined forces too,.which provides a larger selection of real old builldings,....Some of the ones have since been torn down,.so I'm glad these young ,energetic, kids took the time to explore those old spotes ,before they disappeared all together. Mnay of the old buildings have also ,since been converted to Condo's of course,. Remember the RedPAth Sugar ,....Northern Electric (I think di the same),....the old Sherwin Williams has been Condos for amny years,.....also the old Lowney's buildings,..............many many Montreal Industrial areas, have all been converted over to the Condo thing,....We'll probably find out in 20 more years ,that maybe the site's these Condos are built on: show some form of ground contamination,.................hahahahahow about those beautiful looking Condos (nice on the inside anyway) that are built on the old City of Verdun Dump site,..........(no contamination down there, after 60 years of putting the garbage in there..................hahahahaIn anucase it's fun to travel with these Urban Explorer's and see all the great pictures they have taken,.........Remember hte Wellingon Street Tunnel pictures posted a couple of years ago,.they came from those adventurer sites too : Always neat to explore those sites,.Thanks for bringing it back to the forefront:.......................ps: Di have you got that grandosn of yours a Montreal Canadiens, sweater yet....................hahahahahah
Dianne ~~ thanks muchly for the Turcot Yard site. Any information like this harkens me right back to walking there with my dad....ya gotta love it! Haven't visited only except for brief bit yesterday....just too hard. This is really a P.I.T.A. (especially when you're as impatient as I am). *****Have you measured Kenneth for his hockey stick, helmet & skates yet****** Cheers.
Les and Linda glad you liked the Turcot Yard site. I was thinking about the contamination possibilty too..I'd really have to think twice about moving into a place built on any of those former industrial sites. No hockey stick, skates or sweater yet...but we did bring him and Dylan a red plastic fireman's hat..LOL!!! Paul and I were at a community meeting last week at our local community center and firehall....and the firemen were giving these hats out!! The skates etc will be next!!!! LOL!!! Dianne
Hi All Just saw this one. Election back home for next month...anyone have any ideas on who wins? I try and open a new discussion and each time I do it always throws me off and I have to reboot.....HELP!! Lad

Jes--I mean Don't tell me I missed Pancake Day...........hahahahahahWe used to have a Pancake Day ,......and I suspect it was near the Ash Day,didn't we burn palm leaves ,.or something like that ......hahahahathey used to stick the leaves on a crucifix or on that picture of the big J ,whose eyes would follow you all over the place...................hahahahaha ........I think he may have brought them himself this time,................I knew I shouldn't have been staring at the light: "Well Who am I to Question Why his Dad made Me a Non-believer" hahahahahahaha ............................................Oh O,.I'm gonna get it:
Well I;m off to go and take a Treadmill Test,........................ hmmmmmm Think this could be it ?I better keep an eye on the pulse rate...........................YIKES
you mean it was palm leaves that we were supposed to be burnin? seriously, palm leaves are/were the week before Easter. Shrove Tuesday (pancake day) is the day before Ash Wednesday, which is 40 days before Easter.
Hi Levis Sometimes they can be found in Google images, other times I go to these sites " Really Stupid Stuff" or "I am Bored". If you type in something like you will get web sites with silly pictures, videos, jokes etc. Kindafun to browse when housework is done - coffee has brewed - and a bit of time to spare. Laurie
You could always tell which people had gone to church on Ash Wednesday. They were the ones with the black smudge on their foreheads if they didn't wipe it off.

Hi the lad: I worked for a Texaco station at 3rd & Champlain(Lasalle)and regular gas was .41 cents a Gallon,.and Premium was .51 cents (circa '70 ish),............. and we still had to all 'chip in' to ride around in a firends car........hahahahahahCigs were the same price re: small pack -large pack

Hi Les Thanks got it. Good one about MSN... That night a friend of mine was riding past the park when he got stopped by the French guys at the park..he knew one and talked his way past them..came over to my place and told me. He asked me what was going on. Heard rumours I told him. Guy who lived across from me had told me and he was going.Told me watch out if we crossed the bridge. We crossed at Church and rode right down Monk.No one was there we kept our eyes open. All the way down to Lacroix. One guy we knew was jumped but he had no clue what the hell hit him..no one had chance to tell him..guys went looking for who done it but I mean no one around. After that night we did have the cops called on us when we filled up one of their local deps.Too funny to see guys scrambling to get out and away...thanks for the article Les.. Lad
There wa s actually a few planned 'events' that night was exciting cause they immediately blocked te bridge so noone was coming back over the 4th av bridge,...............and there lots of police cars everywhere,.........Stupid stuff when I think back on it,..but luckily noone was seriously hurt,..and the four adults charges,.were only because they had hit 18, and were now considered an adult,...............Growing Up YIKES,. hahahahahaha
Les My buddy told me not to use 4th ave. He just got over it. Said he was surrounded but knew one guy..Heard from other people that Woodland would be "busy". Saw some guys going down Verdun Ave. to Woodland. Told us go over Church and see what you can see and but keep eyes open. Rememer kinda of heavy in the air that night. Best part we found out about it just before it was starting. Danny B lived across from me and asked me hey u guys going. Like an idiot I said to where...Man 10 mins later and it took off..Not the Danny B you mention on here but another one...Forgot how long ago that was seems like yesterday...like you said some of the stupid stuff.. Seemed like after that it kinda blew over and stayed semi normal..or at least what I remember....Can recall going back home that night and the cops all over the place and eyeballing us as we went by...play stupid and keep going.... The French guys with the cops had a few good comments for us....cant repeat them here...ahh Good Times... Thanks Les Lad
I read this book years ago,.but thought I'd mentione it ,.as it is about Montrealit's called "City Uniques" about Montreal in the 40's ,50's & 60's You might find it interesting,................... Montreal in the 1940s and '50s was Canada's largest, richest, most vibrant and colourful city. It was, at the end of those prosperous decades, "bursting at the seams" and still growing. No one could then foresee that political and economic factors would cripple the city and send it into a long decline. (I got a copy of it from the local Library,.so it is probably available to you through a library near you too???) City Unique Montreal Days and Nights in the 1940s and '50s by William Weintraub ......................if you want to look for the book through a bookstore,.then here's some details for you re: ISBN etc etc ........................................The details 340 pages, 6 x 9 inches, paperback B/w photos Bibliography, index Publication, Robin Brass Studio edition: November 2004 ISBN 1-896941-42-7 Have Fun and Remember Verdun

car & truck season is on now, i noticed the prices on ebay are gong up in price. i picked up last week a 1995 trans am, t top lt1, very good condition for 2200.00 got it in boston, 12 hour drive, each way. i now have two, need the parts cheaper to get another car. i'll keep the convertable, its 90% complete now. les like the 73 vete, big block, just been painted also, needs lots of interior work, readdy for next summer. yes you can get good deals at ebay, best is own a car trailor, get the car yourself, towing costs are very expensive, plua its better you go yourself at the border crossing, this way you don't need a broker faster, just pay the taxes and drive away happy.
Les, Where in the world do you get these pics from,I find it facinating! Talking about living in those flats ,my husband lived on 5th Ave. on the 3rd floor with his Mom and Dad and his six( 6) siblings! Talk about learning life lessons, sharing (one bathroom) patience,co-operation,etc.! Good times though. Just a thought. Queenee67
Your right Walter(Metalman),......it's far easier to ,just pay the deal,.than to fool around,Sounds like your going to have a nice car, when it's completed,......what will you do with the shell of the other one,?Sometimes schools will take them as projects, for their trade school mechanics,.Just a Thought:as far as the broker thing,.I always had a broker,.because I couldn not always be there ,while running a company,.so it was just easier to know ,that all the papers would be filled in properly,.( and No surprises),....but your right if you have your own trailer,.and you can escape to do it yourself, then it's always more satisfying...............Good Luck with the projects,........and Don't forget ,to show us some pics from the Big Truck Show, this year....if you can swing it: HF&RV
Hi Queenee66,.....found that one ,while looking for Verdun stuff,.( apicture of Normans actually,)....just thought it was neat to see the size of the houses,.....& Your right ,.sharing one bathroom, was a trick with 8 of us at home........too!Glad you liked the picture.........I thought a few would get a kick out of it Have Fun & Remember Verdun
i'll have the car readdy for the verdun visit i'll see my bro, mom, then down the street i'll visit the wackers showing, know lots of the verduners that will be there for sure. there will be lots of people taking pics for sure that day. as for the trans am, todd whats it for parts i took the tranny, ram air hood, 1 passenger seat maybe the radio, if the other is broken?? most i wanted the ram air hood, gm wanted 3k for that hood alone. the national truck show will be this august in london ontario, for sure i'll get pics later another show in syracuse ny that's were tha action is the states. we canadians are a small population as for states, massive volume of truck collectors my step side classifeid as a street rod todd tells me its a winner, i'll let you know what happens.
They certainly weren't all that small. We were one of the "lucky" families that lived on the bottom flat. In our kitchen we had a "nook-type table" with a bench that ran along the wall. The washer stood behind the back door and later on in the 70's, I think there was even a dryer.
Has anybody given any thought to how small the bathroom (notice it's not plural) used to be in these houses? I think one could conceivably sit on the throne, soak your feet in the tub and wash your hands in the sink all at the same time. I also remember that it was a luxury to have a shower in the bathroom. Les it would be interesting to see if you (or anybody else) can come up with a pic of the bathroom.
Our bottom flat on LaSalle Blvd. had a "Bathroom" and across the hall was the "toilet room". The bathroom had barely enough room for the door to open inward. There was only a tub (the old clawfoot) and a sink. The toilet room must have been about 2 - 2 1/2 ft wide and 4 - 5 ft long. Barely enough room for your feet to rest on the floor.
Our house had the same configuration ~ separate toilet room ~ and there was a window frame (without glass) in the wall that separated the two. They were side by side on one side of the hall. I just can't remember there being any linen closets, or even where the linens would have been kept. In the "bath" room there was also one of those heavy duty radiators, and we used to drape the towel there so when we hopped out of the bath, the towel was warm!!!!
One of our worst nightmares was to have a rat come out of the toilet bowl, well it happened to us in our flat on Galt ave., probably in the 40s, has anybody else had that experience. Guy
Guy ~ it never happened in our house, but my grandmother lived in St. Henri, and it happened to her. After that incident, the toilet seat was always down, that was the rule, and my grandmother covered a building brick with material, and that was placed on the toilet seat ~ I guess just in case the next rat was very muscular and strong, and perhaps could open the seat. LOL.

Does anyone else have any 'confessions' that they'd like to get off their chests??? judy in NB
Hi Judy.....no confessions...LOL.....but where are you in NB? I'm in Nova Scotia, been here 34 years already!!! Dianne

No mention of cannon in this article.
To the glory of God and in grateful memory of men of Verdun who fell in the great war. Aussi dédié à la mémoire de ceux qui tombèrent durant la deuxième guerre mondaile 1939-1945. Also dedicated in reverent memory to those

- - - The Verdun Victory Memorial, which was designed and executed by Coeur de Lion McCarthy, artist-sculptor of Montreal, depicts a Canadian solder in an exultant attitude, his shrapnel helmet in hand and his rifle raised in the spirit of Victory.
I meant to mention that the Hockey Team in the previous post was circa 1960 but I think it's easily related too............. Kids are Kids ...........and hockey is Hockey............. Have Fun and Remember Verdun........................................
Yes Arbutus an this Monument I have seen referance to it being located in this park in '63 I believe it was,...prior to that it was in the little triangular shaped park btwn,.Wellington & Lasalle Blvd,.across from Poisson Hall, corner of LAfleur & Lasalle,.....and also across from the old Labelle BBQ, ........this is the park that I think the Cannons were in (at least at one time), ...it sure would be interesting to see some old photographs from this time,.... I will keep searching and you can rest assured ,that when I do find a pic that any of us have mentioned ,.I will do my best to Remember to post it " ............Yikes.........I hate committment.............hahahahaha
Dianne
Judy.....newfydog,...Mille Feuilles,....I used to love those things,..even though I don't eat much sweets now,.........I still think I'd like one of those ...we don't seem to have them out here (might be a good thing),.......hahahaha but we do have something they call a Nanaimo Bar,...............another sweet type of dessert...................................
Ahh Haa..............another mistake by the museums,...........Have another look at the Hockey Photo in #420 msg,.....the site where I got it says,........1960 Verdun,...........but have a look in the far background,.there's Plc Victoria,.and you can also see a bit of Place Ville Marie,..........both those buildings would not have existed in 1960,.........There was a big hole in the ground for years until they started the actual Plc Ville Marie building,,,,,,,,,, Who's documenting these things.........................hahahahaha
Remember Groucho Marx saying to someone "I've got a good mind ,to join a club,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and Beat you over the Head with it".........hahahahaha .We'll try to find tthat picture of your Dad with the billyclub........(I love that story,.and can't wait to find that picture..................hahahahah
verdun is a total different place today
when i go there and tour i'm just a stranger in a
different place.
when you go to a store, restaurant, and tell
the new owner about verdun years back
no interest at all.
there's lots of new families living in verdun today.
we are from the generation industry, its gone
a new generation took over.
i will in the near future, go down everystreet
in verdun take hundreds of pictures.
even i'll talk to the new generation verduners
and find out what's going on.
yes its not the same its changed big time
if you go there for a visit make it fast and live it
up in montreal downtown, you won't regret
montreal nite life.
Fascinating, isn’t it? ..Found these on the Walking Turcotte Yards site,.............. one of our members here wrote a few piecs for that site,.
I have asked this before, but I don't recall what the answer was,....but is there still a Poolhall above that Provigo ? (used to be a Handy Andy at one time,... but we spent a little time in there (the Poolhall ,that is, not Handy Andy.......hahahaha Verdun & Desmarchais.....................
How old is this bridge? Still standing after all these years,........ -kind of a neat old bridge ,I wonder why it was the only one built along the Acqueduc that had any real 'style ' to it..............? How many bridges were there, and I wonder why only the one different style? was it because it was sort of an 'entrance to Verdun /Ville Emard ,Remember as you came over the bridge towards Verdun,.there was the 'Welcome to Verdun' sign, stating the population,...etc etc .......a big Green & White sign,....... ....but you would think the bridge at Church Av would have been considered the first Entrance to Verdun.........????
It’s a tough knock for us with old notions. ........................................................he has written some different stuff re: the City we all know as Montreal.............(even mentioned those 'missing cows' in one of his articles.............(see i had to slip that in there didn't I) I think it may be easier to find Jimmy Hoffa,......than those old 3d cows,(Lol) http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/120805/kristian.html read the whole article if you feel so inclined,.................................
Thank You Donna ,.....I will have to check it out one day,......I suppose it will be one of those 'Resto Bars/Pubs' to get around the drinking laws,.or has that also changed and Verdun now has pubs??............Mind you anyone could always find an accomodating source ,.all the while still maintaning the Holier than Thow position,.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahaha That place would hold quite a few people ,I'd imagine,.it held a lot of 6x12 tables,at on e time,....a lot of floor space there. I would think the surrounding neighbours may not appreciatee it,if it's loud bands.............. Thanks for that info
This says Verdun...... snowballs and playing in the truck ruts ,from the oil trucks & garbage trucks etc etc..............................
Remember climbing those poles to put the clotheline back on the pulley, that you probably caused by trying to throw that excess loine that was always tied up on the end of the line,.and you'd throw it as hard as you could to see if it would go all the way to the pole.......hahahahahah Why did our parnets never cut that big excess part of the rope off & use it for something else,.it's not like you were going to move to a 'longer laneway' Sorry in advance for the size of this picture: Well that's not as large as it was when I found it,............a Springtime lane,. Well it's not far off now anyway,....................I love the way all the poles are leaning everywhich way ...........hahahahaha
Here's another lane shot,............................checkout how deep the snow is when the kids are resting their feet on the top bar of a swing set...............hahahaha I love the sheds and catwalks in the background............................
My guess would be ,we've all been here a few times: Remember going out to the airport just to sit and watch the Planes taking off & coming in,...................(and oh yea ,to drink beer in the lounge...hahaha)
how come the terminal never is this empty when I'm trying to board a flight.........hahahahahaha ....Have times ever changed ,.........now they won't even let you on with a gun or something..........................
I was looking for montreal tpye stuff,..................(if you open the main page a song starts playing,.and you Can turn it off, just look for the player and click the pause button............................but it has a whole pile of stuff on here, seems 50ish in theme,..but I haven't checked out the whole thing,..... It may be of interest to some ,.........................then again maybe not psssssssssst: it's not mandatory,............hahahahahahah
Meant to ad the picture too...........................just because I thought it was kinda of neat..............or something like that. Funny thing is I like that song ,.and have it on an album by the Coasters (CD too)........................................................
Here's a view most of us have experienced: Looking out a window and seeing how brite everything was with that new dump of snow,......................................................... There are times when the white stuff ,looks alright................................ (generally when it's somewhere else........hahahaha) Wintertime is inevitable,..................................a fact of life any of you ever skate here ???
Hi Les, where exactly are you living at the moment ? D
hi Donna I'm breathing in & out ,right here in Victoria BC ,(so far) .....and according to our advertising that MaggieMck reffered too apparently I'm breathing faster & faster..........hahahahahha
Just an old shot of the stairs at Mont Royal.................................they always seemed to be a wonder in themselves at how long they were: Here's a pic taken from a rooftop,....near the Molson Stadium (you can see the lights of the stdium in the background)
Hey Les,
Before I even got to the bottom of your post, I was thinking "That is fascinating".

Les,
Any idea of the year of that report?

Les, That photo originates from our society, the SHGV, as the boy on the right is Denis Harton, the president of our society. Guy (Roxboro)
Another neat photo of the old Haraki Bar in Ville Lasalle,........many trips were made btwn Bert's & the Haraki ,in the old days,.they usually would have a band .....and it was a fun place,........... .......I think they had a little bakery right next door ,where they sold those big square pizza bread tthings.(hardly a pizza,) but it was food for the hollow, when a quick snack was needed: Thanks for Picture Metalman...........................
brownblvd: You asked what year that map of Turcot yards wass from,. I'm not sure ,but I will try to find out for you in the meantinme here's an old map depicting the same area & river,.this one is from 1931 map I'll keep looking to find the info on the other one,.....................
Good job done here capturing the Lightning Bolt ...........under a black sky .Remember how Black the sky couuld turn in seconds ,..you could almost feel that Black Cloud come over the city ,.temps dropped ,.and then you knew to run for cover ,cause it was going to pour any minute........... People on Wellington make a run for a doorway......hahahahah Those were fun...........................................or if you were having a BBQ you had to quickly gather up everything ,.and get inside ,..then there'd be a real downpour,...and then it's over ,.and your bringing everything back out again..............
A quickie tour of Verdun (some of it) Ok a little more later .??????
Ok had to ad a few more...........Remember this first old building? ..........Front Lawns .....where'd they get these........................... Seems to be the same site that produced those stairs with the birds on them last week,...................................
Yes Les....the Pool Hall is still up and running..

Absolutely right June (maybelle) ,..it looks a little sad from when it had that Great Marquis,& entrance ,.and those aluminum windows ,where you could check & see what movies were going to be coming ,.Those were big deals ,as I recall I lived right beside the Savoy at one time,..my brother & his friend Gilles worked as delivery boyus for Dube's Store which was right beside the Savoy at one time ,.but moved around the corner onto Rielle to make room for that store you can barely see in the 2nd picture,.....was it called O'slunds or something like that.....................
Beaubien & StDenis: I'm sure I've posted this one before,.but nevertheless here it is again,,,,,,,
Remember when tey started to build the Champlain Bridge: ...........................................Here's a real earlier inthe construction shot of the support Pillars,.that would eventually carry tens of thousands of us ,over to the south shore,.for .25cents or one of those Bridge Tokens............ Remember how neat it was as a kid to get to go across a bridge..............Yahoo
how about this major project,....a joint effort between the USofA & Canada .....lots of Major infrastructure was hapenning in those days,..... Building the Seaway was a fantastic project,........that made both these country's extremely profitable.........................Sadly we don't seem to embark on these mega -projects anymore,..Nor do we seem to fix up our other infrastructure.........Where once we had the pride of the worls highways ,.& byways,.& Freeways,...........................now we have potholes,.while other Country's surge to the forefront...................................
Well I was supposed to put the picture of the Seaway in that last post,. .........alot of thought & effort into that Seaway,.....and yet we pretty much took it for granted,......................................................
Les.....great pictures...I like the one of the Champlain bridge under construction. Look at all the vacant land......not like that today! Dianne
Hi Les,
Sorry, I meant what year was that newpaper clipping from about the gang crossing the bridge into Ville Emard?
By the way, thanks for that additional map of Riviere St. Pierre.

This is in response to photo of the depanneur that is in question
sorry , that would be message 389
Hi Donna ,...I posted another picture yesterday,.and after I did I realised it's the same store,....just from a different vantage point: Here are both of them: the next shot is in post #470 It's been identified as the old Second Avenue Restaurant(2nd & Verdun,of course) ........and in looking at the other view I can see how that is probably the answer,...............Sure looks different to me,........We had a few Pizzas in there from time to time,....................
Next time I am in Verdun I will check it out but thanks for the answer. It sure is frustrating to try and figure out where places are
I like the big verandahs, gallery, porch...what ever it's called, on that building. Dianne
Yes ,funny you mention those HappyDi2,....I was looking at those ,and I just couldn't Remember those particular ones above that Restaurant ,........ Those were the gallery's (that as kids) we all wanted to have ,.cause they would be wide enough to play hockey on,when your little......hahahaha I Remember walking into the Restaurant ,many times ,..but I just didn't Remember those big balcony's Gallery's Porch's or Veranda's (I'm going with Front Gallery ,since it's Verdun)..........hahahahaha
Lad
Les Where can I find that newspaper clipping I just read about? Lad
Religous Processions ,were common,.in Verdun (Montreal) and it seemed they had a lot of them ,.as well as all the Church Bells ringing on every Sunday,.as well as some of those events,.......... ....Quite the rituals ,when you think of it,........ Also Remember all those Funerals with People marching along behind the Hearse,..............where did they originate from,.?? because now a days you go to a Funeral Parlour or to the actual Funeral at the Church,...and when that's over the Hearse (accompanied by some family members,in a couple of other cars) head off right from the Churchj to the Cemetary of their choice,. .........So where did the ones we used to see in Verdun,go to or from? we didn't have a graveyard that I can recall being used in Verdun proper?? Know where the bottom photo is taken?? I posted this a few years back ,.and DannyB got it right away,............................Know where?????
Les Hi first thing picture reminds me of is 3rd and Verdun... did u get my messsage about where I could find paper clipping from 68? Let me know if I got picture...thanks bro.. Lad
Yes that's right ...................... here's another' .......Checkout the 'Deadman Walking' the big top hat,.....walking in front of the Hearse,..and the 'clansmen' alongside the Hearse,.....were these guys Knights of C ??? there is an emblem / crest on those capes,.So I am guessing it's something like the Knights of C....or similar?? Someone out there ,probably knows a little better,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the lad: I did orginally scan the article ,.so I'll have to look dig it out again ,.and post it again,.I usually leave pics in the msg's ,but I must have had that one directly from 'my pics' and then cleared my storage space???
Hi Les Thanks 2nd pic not up yet. I am interested in reading that article... Lad Let u know about second picture...
Summer '68 (August) ............excerpt from Montreal Star (fairly sure it was the Star ,.may have been Gazette)I've had this thing since the day it came out in the paper,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (why we keep this stuff, I don't know) hahahahahaha ..................................It's not exactly something that I would put on the wall with some of mu other plaques,...............hahahahaha ......................it's getting near 40 years old and may be a little difficult to make out,....but it was an interesting evening,........................hahahahah
Les when i open up i have nothing but blanks where pic and article is... Lad
the lad: I now am not certain if that thing is showing up??? I saw it ,then it disappered ,.but then I signed back in & it was there again,.... ????
Ok which picture is missing?? the first one with the two pictures or the second one with the Knights of C ....in it and the guy walking ahead of the Hearse???

Ok I'll see if I can figure that one out?????????????
the lad: I just tried to sign in on another deal,.and I rec'vd a Windows Live msn site is experiencing difficulty,.and my request couldn't be completed..?? I will try again later ...and see if it can be resolved,....weird stuff on MSN,doesn't surprise me anymore...........hahahahahaha
Les I cant get the K Of C or the article... Got the other ones Lad
Les, I participated many times at those funeral processions in the 40s wich would start at the funeral parlor and end at the church for the funeral ceremony. I think your picture depicts a religeous celebration and we certainly had many of those in my time. Thanks for the memories. Guy

HiDi,.there has been a lot of interest in Turcot Yards over the past year or so,.and many more sites popping up for sure,.One of our members was one of the first I had heard of ,.in the 'Walking Turcot Yards' site ,.as for the abandoned buildings site,.this is interesating too,.We' ve been posting some of their stuff for several years now,.A few groups that do the same thing (explore abandoned sites) have seemingly joined forces too,.which provides a larger selection of real old builldings,.... Some of the ones have since been torn down,.so I'm glad these young ,energetic, kids took the time to explore those old spotes ,before they disappeared all together. Mnay of the old buildings have also ,since been converted to Condo's of course,. Remember the RedPAth Sugar ,....Northern Electric (I think di the same),....the old Sherwin Williams has been Condos for amny years,.....also the old Lowney's buildings,..............many many Montreal Industrial areas, have all been converted over to the Condo thing,.... We'll probably find out in 20 more years ,that maybe the site's these Condos are built on: show some form of ground contamination,.................hahahaha how about those beautiful looking Condos (nice on the inside anyway) that are built on the old City of Verdun Dump site,..........(no contamination down there, after 60 years of putting the garbage in there..................hahahaha In anucase it's fun to travel with these Urban Explorer's and see all the great pictures they have taken,......... HI Les Great picture of the yards..worked there for couple years. In different parts.. Different to see it there with nothing in it... Lad
LOL!!! Dianne

Lad
There wa s actually a few planned 'events' that night was exciting cause they immediately blocked te bridge so noone was coming back over the 4th av bridge,...............and there lots of police cars everywhere,.........
I read this book years ago,.but thought I'd mentione it ,.as it is about Montreal it's called "City Uniques" about Montreal in the 40's ,50's & 60's You might find it interesting,................... car & truck season is on now, i noticed the prices
on ebay are gong up in price.
i picked up last week a 1995 trans am, t top
lt1, very good condition for 2200.00
got it in boston, 12 hour drive, each way.
i now have two, need the parts cheaper to get another
car.
i'll keep the convertable, its 90% complete
now.
les like the 73 vete, big block, just been painted
also, needs lots of interior work, readdy for next summer.
yes you can get good deals at ebay, best is own
a car trailor, get the car yourself, towing costs are
very expensive, plua its better you go yourself at the border crossing, this way you don't need a broker
faster, just pay the taxes and drive away happy.
Queenee67
Your right Walter(Metalman),......it's far easier to ,just pay the deal,.than to fool around, Sounds like your going to have a nice car, when it's completed,......what will you do with the shell of the other one,? Sometimes schools will take them as projects, for their trade school mechanics,. Just a Thought: as far as the broker thing,.I always had a broker,.because I couldn not always be there ,while running a company,.so it was just easier to know ,that all the papers would be filled in properly,.( and No surprises),....but your right if you have your own trailer,.and you can escape to do it yourself, then it's always more satisfying...............Good Luck with the projects,........and Don't forget ,to show us some pics from the Big Truck Show, this year....if you can swing it: HF&RV
Hi Queenee66,.....found that one ,while looking for Verdun stuff,.( apicture of Normans actually,)....just thought it was neat to see the size of the houses,..... & Your right ,.sharing one bathroom, was a trick with 8 of us at home........too! Glad you liked the picture.........I thought a few would get a kick out of it Have Fun & Remember Verdun

i'll have the car readdy for the verdun visit
i'll see my bro, mom, then down the street

that day.
as for the trans am, todd whats it for parts
i took the tranny, ram air hood, 1 passenger seat
maybe the radio, if the other is broken??
most i wanted the ram air hood, gm wanted 3k
for that hood alone.
the national truck show will be this august
in london ontario, for sure i'll get pics
later another show in syracuse ny
that's were tha action is the states.
we canadians are a small population
as for states, massive volume of truck collectors
my step side classifeid as a street rod
todd tells me its a winner, i'll let you know
what happens.

They certainly weren't all that small. We were one of the "lucky" families that lived on the bottom flat. In our kitchen we had a "nook-type table" with a bench that ran along the wall. The washer stood behind the back door and later on in the 70's, I think there was even a dryer.
What is the address of Normand Patate. On what street and intersection. Guy

LOL.
