Remember the old skates,...we never had the support they have in the skates nowadays,....(especially since most were handme downs,......hahahah & one size fits all-------'most' hahahahah and the old 'sled' Remember having one of these,as well as a 6 passenger tobogan,..(i'll find a pic of an old tobogan)................Snowshoes (I found an old pair in the shed ,I guess had just stayed in that shed for each new family to discover........can't ever Remember wearing any though....but i must have tried them at som point,
Wellington Street wasn't really conducive to wearing snowshoes..........hahahaha
...................................remember those things

I think of this as 'Real Hockey'............ an outdoor rink in 'La Belle Province'
Ok not seasonally correct (who cares),......but I bet most of us have had a turn,on a ride like this: .........such simple things ,but they were fun for a kid............
Skating in Quebec: It's funny how it does seem somewhat different to skate on an outdoor rink: I still have never done the Rideau Canal ,...the world's longest skating rink: Just serves to remind me ,that we all should 'do' things when we have the chance (never mind living on 'Someday Isle'........hahahahah like Nike says " Just Do It"........ so if there are things you have been thinking about doing,....Go Do It
Les-F Theres talk of making a second Ridaud Canal with the Lachine Canal. This would certainly be terrific. Guy
Les-F You may not be old enough to remember the High Toboggan slide that was somewhere between Hickson and Galt back in the early 40s near the Auditorium. Maybe you can come up with a photo. Guy
Guy that is a great idea,....I would love to skate the Lachine Canal, it would freeze easily as it's not that deep ,.......(neither is the Rideau ,as they lower the level to accomodate safety,somewhat).............but what a neat thing that would be,...they could have 'warm up shacks' along the way,..it would be great: Any word on when & if ,this will take place ?
I will try ,..to find a picture Guy,...but I suspect ,you would have the better resources within SHGV (which I want to visit one day) sounds like the area that is home to Therrien Park ?? and you say it was around 1940 ? I'll give it a shot.................
Guy. I remember that ice slide. I was very yoing, and have thought about that slide quite a bit. BUT...because I was so young, I thought it was just my imagination until it was mentioned on this site. Wonderful.....

I'm still searching for the VerdunSlide,...but here's one for Maggiemck(cause it's in Sask. ..............and it's beside a river ,so we can pretend 'till I find the real one.........hahahaha
I may have gone back a little too far,for this one........hahahahah from the Montreal Daily Star 1865 I doubt any of you were on this slide...........hahahahah if you Rememr being on this one,....your doing great,.......
Have a look at the front of this Toboggan,.....and you can see one of the boards separating from the other,.....I Remember this always hapenning,....and always only on one side,......also one of the little chains/ropes would always come off,and so the top of the toboggan wouldn't stay even as you pulled on the rope to 'try' to steer down a slope...........hahaha We used to also use the little slope from the Boardwalk down through the old Model School yard towards the fence along Lasalle Blvd....... ...............I'm still searching for just the right picture,..so I hope you don't mind this 'adlibbing sort of'.............hahahaha
Les-F, That illustration may be the hill next to the Lac aux Castors on the Mount Royal. I went with the kids in the early 60s, I would ski and they would tobaggan. I had forgotten about that episode until you posted that picture. Thanks for jogging my memory. I think that event still goes on in the winter season. Guy
I have posted these before,...but I thought it did fit in this thread,...... funny thing is I can never Remember any kids having a new pair......after all .39 cents didn't grow on trees..................hahahahahhaha The good thing about using these,.was you didn't have to worry about someone stealing your boots...........hahahahahha
We used to call these "cheesecutters"...never needed sharpening. I recall them having all kinds of rust when you took them out for a new season of skating. Cheers.
Yes indeed "CheeseCutters" they were called,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,Why ? I don't know........Does anyone out there know why these were known as "CheeseCutters" ? ...........I think every family had a pair of these(stored in the old shed ),....but we could never find them when we needed them eg: a new young family member learning to skate,..............I guess there was always a year or so before new siblings arrived on the scene,........or years sometimes,& we would have to go look in the shed for the old "Cheesecutters",,,,but somehow they were never where we thought we put them a year or so before,,,,,, but we always found a pair for the new addition to learn how to skate: hahahahahah Growing up was fun wasn't it !!!
