Verdun/Montreal Places & Stuff
Remember when Nuns Island had only the farm & ruins of the Nuns residence/convent???
I wonder why it stood in such ruins, why was it only partially torn down,.was this the result of people dismantling it a little at a time or ???
Look at this ,......probably the last of a breed I'd say,........ "Imagine airing their dirty laundry in public"that never happened in Verdun...................hahahahahahah ......Lanes are Lanes
Look at this shot,........I always thought of doing something like this,....but never did .............................Glad this photographer did:my oldman would have got a kick out of this shot,......seeing the original was made in his shop...............................strait up the inside of the PVM Xmas tree
Duddy Kravitz hangout,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, "Wilensky's"hte movie does it better justice,.......but still neat to see just the same(JMO)
the Staples of Life ,......when we were growing up..............hahahahahah'and I've never ever noticed a sign saying "A la Vapeur" would scared the hell out of us,.........I'd rather have a 'Steamie" in eitheer languageYikes .....................is that all we ate................hahahahhaha
NOT AGAIN,.......he's posting this (non-important) yet very recognizable Montreal (not landmark) but simply Sign,..............but have a look the sign is illuminated by Yellow lights ¬ those old annoying red ones..........................hahahahhahahaha
Son of a B%*&^)_tch,..................he found another angle to post ,but it's back in the old familiar Red with black trim..............................................................................Will he ever stop ???
Oh how I remember and loved the LANES , kick the can , hide and seek , stando , bunny in the hole and on and on , however not interested in jumping off 2nd storey balcony today into snow pile , NO SNOW , hahahaha hang tough Jimmy
Verdun ( Church av looking down Evelyn)When you look down at the end of the street, you can see one on Montreal's taller buildings,...but it's really not that far away,...Yet as kids ,it was a big deal to 'make the trip' all the way Downtown.......the above shot of Rielle & Verdun Av's ,..would have been taken almost from directly in front of the old St Willibrord's School (Boy's grade school).....it was replaced by a much smaller school, essentially built in the old schools ,shoolyard closer to Willibrord................Just a shot of 5th avenue.......................it always makes me laugh to think, that Everyone always wished ,to one day,be able to get a 1st floor flat,(sort of Our version of Westmount)..........hahahahah and to have a front yardwell that would have been like living on the 'Ponderosa' hahahahahRemember that map of the Ponderosa ,every Sunday Night on TV.....................................................Have Fun
How about Saint Catherine Street ,1901 shot in front of Morgan's (now the Bay)...............................look at the guy having to shovel the snow ,behind the tram,.............and that is a considereable amount of snow on the street,...........a Cold Montreal Winter Day,...and yet there's still people out milling around...........................Have a closer look and you can see several people with shovels at the ready,.........................
Just thought this was an interesting old house in Hampstead,.......a lot of nice rockwork there:......that is a lot of work,..........I like it ,it's kinda neat
Wow the landscape's changed a little since these days,........................But you have to admire the quality of the workmanship ,done here,.as it still stands there today, without any obvious signs of deterioration,.WellDone
Les, I wish to know if anyone rememers the size (square footage) of the lower flats shown on 5th ave. I think most of them were about the same size. I lived in a lower on Brown Blvd and I recall 2 bedrooms, small living room, one bath and one kitchen. 1000 sq. ft think would be pushing it. I think most of the flats in Verdun were all about the same size except the mid-uppers which were three-five rooms. Also, somewhere on one of the strings, I was reading about a radio commentator (Paul) who came from a family of six and used to talk about his growing up at Christmas. There was also a picture and a link, but I can't find it again to add to my favorites. Can anyone point me in the right direction again. Merry Christmas to all. Keith
No Ice for the rinks,...then you doit the old fashion way:these kids don't have too many friends it seems,......we had whole teams out there..........hahahaha smaller family's I guess.....................
Hi Keith the name of the show is Paul Reids Christmas (I think that's what your referring to).... the show has been on every Sunday on CJAD for the month of December 6pm-9pm Paul Reid's Christmas here's the direct link: http://www.cjad.com/holidayscheduleLook's like tomorow ,will be the last shot,.............6pm-9pm (Eastern Times),.So adjust the time for your area of the Country,.......as for the size of the houses in Verdun,....I think your guess of 1000 sgft. would be fair assessment ,.....I suspect a little under that,...but I think I have a floor plan from some site or other,....I will try to find it for you:but Guy5479 ,.......may have access to info like that ,maybe even a schematic(draft of a floor plan) at the SHGV, center..........he's Our resident expert on Verdun facts & figures ,and history ...................... If I come across it I will post it under this thread......how's that....
Les-f, Here is a drawing of the flat where I lived on Galt ave. The neighbour had the same configuration but in reverse. I consider this type of flat as a 4-1/2 with 2 bedrooms and the area at 50-55 teet deep by app. 15 ft wide, making it app. 750 to 825 square feet, more or less. I don't know if this is representative of the flats in Verdun but I would guess that many were this size and configuration. The living room doubled as a bedroom with a sofa that opened and doubled as a bed. We also had a cot against the wall in the dining room as we were 7 children and 2 parents. As far as my being your resident expert, this is putting pressure on me but I am always ready to respond when I can. Guy
Thanks Guy,.....I suspectmost of the flats were similar layout's with slight variation,......as to the size I would agree with that roughly 850 figure, give or take,I had to smile to myself when you mentioned the 'cot'..........hahahahaWe had one too,and I'd bet many of us did,.......to accomodate us all,....sharing a room was common place,.........it wasn't till later in Lasalle that I actually had my first own room.............hahahahah We all learned to share, like it or not,........Funny thing I look back and don't really Remember it being all that bad........and besides those long hallways, made for a great spot to play hockey,.......hahahahaha Thanks Guy
Guy. You must have come from the rich part of town. Ours have one less room. Winston Allison Type your favorite song. Get a customized station. Try MSN Radio powered by Pandora.
Winston, Galt ave was considered the poor section of Verdun. We always thought that the new section was at the other end, starting past the avenues. Guy
Yup Guy,..past the avenues,.starting at Desmarchais ,as a fancy street,Also above Bannantyne 3rd av & up had some nice fancy type self contained homes,....and of course Brown Blvd, and the homes around there, but above Beurling towards Champlain,.and of course Verdun's Westmount,......(Crawford Park)............hahahahabut we were almost all in the same boat ,(so to speak),.......We had to work:hahahahah................................
I wonder if Verdun still feels like separate neighbourhoods like we thought,I mean to the present day residents,........Remember some nice homes to around Lasalle blvd,...on the curve past Woodland towards where Verdun Av meets LasalleRemember outside one of the mayor;s of Verdun house there were two poles,.one on each side of the entrance ,I think they had Round White Glass Ball typ shades,..with what I think was the City of Verdun logo ??Was it O'reilly's,........???? Edbro ,or Jimmy (kungfu ) you guys would Remember that ,..or DannyB too,not much you've forgotten about Verdun either it seems........I think the house had a Granite Stone facing,??
Look at the size of this building,.......I wonder why they felt the need to build such large buildings,......most of the space seems wasted,....but I guess grandeur & some form of oppulence was needed to attract followers......Nowadays it seems these places are built a lot smaller......imagine what it must cost to heat an old building like this,.........Yikes !!!and it wasn't because it was cheap to build,.....
Here's a shot from a little while back Charlevoix St .....Look at the old Bus Stop on the corner? Man I Remember thinking ,whenever I went to a new/different city,....Why didn't they have such simple signs to designate a Bus Stop............hahahahah It's funny how initially when we arrive somewhere else other than Our hometown of Montreal(Verdun) etc etc ,......We immediately think 'they've got it all wrong'it should be done 'the way we do it'................hahahahaha but also Look at the Police/FireDepartment CallBox,....on the pole on the corner,....those were a great idea,..but I seldom ever saw one used ,except by pranksters........hahah ,but in the earlydays ,when not everyone had a phone (if anyone, I Imagine).......these CallBoxes.........were the 'cell phone'of the day........Imagine a Direct Link to the Closest Fire Department or Police Station (in many cases one & the same),....and whoever answered the phone ,made an immediate descision,as to whether it was an idiot calling or a legitiamte 'Call for Help'...................Most often he made the right call,..Quite something ,in the evolution of some sort of Social Order.....& in those days the Cop on the Beat ,could & would kick your a$$ if he thought or caught you doing something stupid,.........hahahahah and if he did catch you ,and dished out any type of 'penalty for your stupidity',then You would only hope it ended there and didn't go further and tell your oldman,.................Cause then You'd Really Get it............(so I've heard)......hahahahaha I love the old time Growing up in Montreal/Verdun.or any where from around there,...cause i think we learned some common sense (Although ,....it took 'some' a lot longer to 'sink in' than others.............) ...............hahahahahahaha
Remember Community Clinics........??? When most things could still be cured ,by a 'stiff' warning (so to speak)...........hahahaha and a pile of pills, not to be taken with alcohol............now where in those days could you find anything but alcohol.........what with all those beer stores on every corner,no bottled water around then,................hahahahah .........or the advent of 'the Pill'...........now don't miss a day ,turn that dial with care........................Oh Oh , better hand me back that Lightning Back..........hahahah............Yikes !!! Sandy isn't this your baton ?hahahaha
Remember when the garbage trucks could actually 'fit' in the lanes, now they are too big,and so garbage pickup is now done from the front of the house,...it was a 'big deal' as a kid to look out the back window (if it wasn't frosted &iced up),....to watch the trucks go rumbling through the lane,...Oil Trucks,Garbage Trucks,.and of course all the peddlars we used to have ,.the Rag man ,the ice men,..the scissors & knife sharpeners,........quite a bit of Commerce was done through those old lanes.........oh yes the Coal ,the Ice delivery's too ( a little futher back) but still was an interesting place to watch as a kid,....................Oh Yes ,and we learne to scurry up onto the snowbanks in the winter to avoid being run over by oil truck which was always barrelling down the lane.............(always liked that expression 'Barrelling'I don't know what was so interesting about the above photo for adults,..but this shot attracted a few onlookers..........hahahahah ........Look at how small these trucks really were,...........Oh yea that's probably the basement of some of those new condos built on the old GArbage Dump, landfill near the river Yikes, can you say 'methane' ..
I remember the "Avon Calling" ladies. They went door to door with their catalogues and wares, and more often than not, left samples of everything. These days, if you're lucky, a catalogue is left anonomously on your doorstep! I guess the "Encyclopedia Salesmen" are also a thing of the past. I guess this is hardly surprising as we have a wealth of information right at our fingertips. But I do remember the men hauling their books up and down stairs, and usually not making a sale, as I believe the books were very expensive at the time. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a "Tupperware Lady" since I can't remember when. Do they still do Tupperware Parties? Whew!
Funny Linda Mom45,.....I was reminded by your post of those door to door people,.....but I also Remember before the days of 'credit cards' there was a guy who sold stuff to everyone and kept the customers name on a card,..and came around every couple of weeks (?) to collect whatever they could off the bill.............hahahahah I Remember my sister in law, bought something (pans??) or whatever,..and my brother was pissed off ,because now they thought they'd never pay it off,........hahahahah I also had a friend of mine who got a job with 'Chargex" Remember them (the forerunner to Visa,of course) ,...and because they wanted to launch this new inovative 'credit card for everyone' ....they did a mass mailout ,to just about everyone ,giving them a personal credit card,..with I think it was maybe 1 or $200,.....dollar limit,...................I'm amazed they survived, I magine mailing a card worth money to people that didn't have much to start with ,.....must have been like money from heaven.........hahahahah ......but look at then now....................Yikes !!! $$$$$$$$ hahahahah
Thanks Sandy ,......(I knew it was one of you).......hahahah I guessed wrong, let's let HappyDi retain the baton for now,.....I need all the 'reprieves ' I can get.........hahahaha Not that I'm in line for any 'Halo' or anything & Beautification is at least 5000 years off...............hahahahaha
One day, not very long ago, a store clerk asked how I was going to pay for an item, and I blurted out "Chargex". Both papasan (as you would say) and the clerk did a double take....the clerk because I'm sure she had never heard of Chargex. My other half whispered "I think you mean Visa". I think my mom thought all credit cards were the work of the devil. Her and my dad paid C...A....S....H , when they bought a new car around 1975. Only towards the end of her life did we convince her that she should have a credit card for emergencies. Cheers.
Remember this phrase: Will that be Cash,or Chargex ............. ..............I think my 1st card was a Sunoco ? ,....(even though I worked for Texaco..........hahahaha I suppose Texaco wasn't as forthcoming, cause they 'really' knew how much I made............hahahahah
Hi Sandy, I'm with you re the dishwashing and housework. Not my thing and I always look for independent (low maintenance) appliances and housewares. Southgate Mall here in Edmonton has a stand in a middle aisle selling Tupperware. They are still expensive as ever.
Some may Remember this plae ,.However I douybt you remember it from actually being there during construction......... . Quite the frame work for this old building,..........Opened in 1927,............and the dances held in the basement were to create a a following ,that if they weren't going upstairs during the week for confession,...They probably should have been................hahahahahahand I won't tell you how many 'mickey's were snuk in through the basement windows,....Yup even those screen gates over the windows ,were nothing but (well) Window dressing..............hahahahahaha Many youngsters got in through the window,......but I won't reveal how just yet............hahahaha
Now this old structure was at the corner of Rielle & Verdun Avenue,.........and I think it's DannyB who Remembers what the inscription was at the top of the building dead center below the cross.....................not the best picture of this long gone building ,....but many of us went to this old building on a daily basis.......................... (I lived over on the next block ,to right of this intersection,.......) .....and my guess is that the photographer took this picture while standing in a dirt/gravel parking lot that was home to a couple of Billboards .....that a few of us used to climb, with great regularity I might ad.................hahahahahah Remember sneaking cigarettes around this area too.......as well as a block over to the left, where the old Monument used to be..............................Some of the Catholic Girls here on the site may Remember this building:...actually anyone Boys or Girl will or might or should Remember that building ,that was located between Rielle (Girls Side) & Willibrord Av. (Boys Side).........DannyB ..................I think you should tell the 'Bell Story' again..............hahahahaha
If you look behind this group, you can see the top of the chainlink fence which kept the border between the Boys Side of the School from the Girls side segragated.......(The High School that is )Great picture ,......checkout the Flags,.........the Union Jack (not even just a Red Ensign,............tells us that this picture most definetly was taken ,at least prior to Feb 15th 1965.....cause that's the day the 'New' Canadian Flag came out,......so my guess here ,is late 50's or very early 60's ?????
A back alley on Berri St,....taken Dec 26th,2006 Looks like Montreal got a little of the white stuff on Boxing Day,.....(noone told us..........hahahaha) Here's the corner of Lajeunesse & Louvain.....Remember as a pedestrian having to slosh through that piled up slush at each corner.........(I hate that)hahahahah:Mind you it almost looks like ,the stuff was disappearing quick enough,as it looks a bit mild there..........(how you tell that from a picture I'm not sure,.....hahaha but that's what I think)
Now this shot was taken the day before on Dec 25th,.......and aside from a Seasonal Greeeting on the sign,....there appears to be nothing Seasonal about the bare streets in the background,....So the snow only popped in on Boxing Day ......Nice............"Remember the ad for this spot in the 60's ? --"Ding-a-ling-a-ling,that's all you Do........ ........Poot ,poot ,poot...............StHubert BBQ-----"
Hey check out this fleet:..............pretty Fancy looking rigs ,for delivrering chicken-------...............a little different from the 'poot ,poot poot ,.....bugs they used to have,...that was there signature................. .............................Remember them well:
Sandy.....Congrats on your good luck! So it is true then. In the Bible it says that if you give you shall receive..... Yeah, I remember hearing about someone spending the collection money at the candy store...wont mention any names! Dianne
Sandy & Dianne, Aren't those like...well....ummmm..... unpure (or whatever) thoughts? I mean it's like stealing from the poor before they even get the collection money, lol Hopefully this will straighten you gals out, and you thought only Les_F had this power, eh? Here goes: Cheers.
I just liked this Montreal area shot,....you all know where,.......but look at the little kid trying to skate along,,,,.........hahahaha...............a Montreal 'scene' (often) ........hahahahaha
I seem to Remember this old montreal Building as the name is one that most people would have known............many people I (think) got work here at times,......but nevr for good dough,.....but any dough was better than no-dough,.........in those days,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Anyone else Remember this??or am I confusing two separate spots,.........Help you knowledgeable Montrealers...................................................................
Not everyone worked for CNR,............some actually did OK by this old spot,.You Know Who You Are.................hahahahahaha .............................................................................
Sorry I meant to ad this one too............................the other door???..........................................................Telegraph,.........Telegraph,......for Mr ...hahahahaha
How about D'la Commune,........................the foreground shot used to be the "Catholic Sailors Club"..........before my time,...but some may Remember ..........I certainly Remember the area as ,I drove my bicycle over the cobble stones in this area when my oldman's shop was very close by here...................................Not far from BlacksBridge,.......where the old bridge used to allow us to cut over to Mill St.////////// I like old Montreal Pics.......hope you do too !!
"Holy Crap"..........................here's a monument (so to speak) in Mount Royal Cemetary.......................................... Was this guy bragging or what ?hahahahahaha..............YIKES if Size Does Matter,.......then I'd say Mr Maltby Winshahahahahahahah...................................and not by just a head............hahaha
Can you say Saint Vallier,.............................which side of this door is most familair to you..........Inside looking out,.........or this version,& Rememeber I know a few of you................hahahhahhaha...............it's a school door..........(????) I don thin so Lucy.............hahahah
......................................................................and the Winner is ......... ..........MR MALTBY.........Way to go "Big Fella"......hahaha
I wonder if these posts bother Mr Maltby,.....or do you think it's true ...................... he has No Conscience.............hahahahhaisn't that what they always say...............................................
Did anyone notice that on the stone is carved: "In affectionate remembrance........ Yah, I think so......but was that erected (pun intended) by his wife or lover????? But he must have been very smart, cause isn't that where men's brains are? He must have had a big brain, n'est-ce-pas? Geez, I'm sitting here trying not to split my gut. Cheers.
Need to work off some of the Holiday Excess,......what about a skate at Beaver Lake,....and a HotChocolate in the Chalet:.........Visit the Mountain for us ,out of towners,.....and bring your camera along,.....................maybe a walk from Beaver Lake over to the "Lookout"..........and walk down the Long Stairs,....get on a Bus and head Back to Verdun...................................................................................HF&RV

Just another shot of Beaver Lake,.during the skating season,...............I can Remember how 'cold' we were, but never thought of it,.we justed were kids having fun,............Remember getting on a Bus with a bunch of friends & a Toboggan or two,....& heading to the Mountain........just a bunch of kids with no worries of our safety,...........Nowa days we watch our kids like hawks...........
Hey Remember that fence,.......? I don't recall the hay bales,...but I sort of remember a fence lining the toboggan & slide area..?.....Look up on the pole,.there's a speed limit here........hahahahaha
I always liked that song they came out with,........... I wonder if there's sound byte to be found on the net somewhereInteresting input Sandy..........................Funny how as soon as we heard the story ,.even as kids we knew it was a shaky story at best, and we were not surprised to hear of an escape,..so blatantly loaded with inside help (Naw,that wouldn't happen in LaBelle Province) ..............hahahahahah
After 136 days on the run Rivard was brought back to Montreal where the prosecutor agreed to withdraw charges of escaping and armed robbery so that the trafficker could be extradited to the United States as soon as possible.
He was escorted to Houston, Texas, where his three co-accused were already jailed. The trial lasted only seven days and, after only three hours of deliberation, the jury declared Rivard guilty. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined $20,000.
Lucien Rivard was paroled on January 17, 1975. He returned to Montreal where, police claim, he continued to run his empire. He kept an extremely low profile until his death on February 3, 2002. He was 86 years old.
Nice sunset over the park we all know................... ..............not a bad shot, but Imagine if they taken this picture ,just a few minutes earlier,,,,,,,,,,,it would have been really fantastic....... ....................Montreal
For the CoteStPaul .members,...here's a shot of the CoteStPaul locks, along the Lachine Canal....................................Now has this changed or what? ................. I think it would be really neat ,if they do make the LAchine Canal a long skating rink in the Winter,...............(not this winter of course).......Man is it ever Mild back home,............Literally no winter, Hard for the Ski Hills ,..but what a super break for all those who get a reprieve from the Norm.
Sorry ,this was supposed to go along with that last picture in the previous post......... Five locks once enabled ships to cross the 14.5-m drop between Montr챕al and Lachine. Three have been abandoned since the canal closed in 1970. The restoration of the C척te-Saint-Paul Lock began in 1998. The walls were repaired, the doors entirely rebuilt, and new electrical mechanisms replaced the old ones. The weir was also restored and a new lockkeeper's cabin built. ..........................................................................................................
Some older Cote St Paul shots:Montreal Light Heat & Power...............we spoke of them recently,.....was it JMH or Guy perhaps,....in anycase ,that's an old photo.......and a final shot of Ville Emard
Of course, that was eons ago, when I lived there! Of course, I'm not that old, am I? Naa, course not. But when I lived there, there weren't any apartments.
Hi Mom I also found another picture listing an address on D'leglise ,is it possible that the other building was on Church as well.....they seemed to be similar instyle ,.and reportdedly from around the early 70's,....meanwhile Here's ashot listed as Angrion Park,.I didn't know they set up Christmas displays like this little village ?..................Do You recall this stuff ??
The apartments on/near Church are a possibility. We lived in the poorer, working area of Ville Emard (English, French, Italian, Black) and the highest we had in apartment buildings is 2 stories (that I can remember). Angrinon Park, well now I feel downright ancient. They were just developing the park into something other than bush just around the time I left (which was about 1966-67). Sure looks neat though.
#308 Trinitaires Ok this is a little newer: Can you say Monk Monk & Jolicouer.................................Looks like this place has had a few name changes ???? ???
The newer building on the corner of Monk and Jolicoeur wasn't there when I paraded up and down Monk Blvd. But I do remember the fire station was just one or two lots north on Monk from this corner. I remember having to go there with my bike to get a licence plate for it! The fireman used to sit around with the big doors open, and they would invite us kids in to look around and sit in the trucks. What a thrill.
I think the first one is probably Jolicoeur Street, and for some reason, I think the Woo's Cafe is on Monk, probably near where the original DiLallo's used to be.
Well I don't feel so bad now Mom,....I left LaBelleProvince./////in the 70's,and i don't recall alot of the stuff,....I always thoguht of Angrion Park as being more Ville Lasalle,...rather than CoteStPaul/VilleEamrdHow's this area,..............any more familiar ?Looks like the guy's house across the street ,is either in love with Bordeaux Look,.........oe he's had some uninvitef guests..............hahahahaand the guy on this side is getting ready to fill up the trailer,.& move out West ???........................hahahahah
Look how the guy painted the brick on the lower part of the house.......hello......how much more paint would it have taken to do the top portion......hello
"Fire Escapes".............................another thing we all grew up with,..Remember jumping up to pull the stairs part down ,so we could sneak up the fire escapes to 'rooftop' ..........just to play,.........this next picture is unreal,..that just a few short days ago Montreal had snow, yet today they are enjoying really mild temps........the aboce pics from Dec 27 th 2006.......................................Amazing
Remember this view,........of course you do,or you never lived in Verdun/Montreal in the winter..................I always hated the stairs not being cleaned properly,..not that I liked when i had to go & shovel the stairs,...but if you were going to clean them ,....do it right................hahahahahah Otherwise, you always have those ruts from the old footprints on there,...and if you were quick enough ,you could get all the snow off with a broom, and not have to shovel,....
.................................................Ben's ......................................................... 1908---------------------------------------------------2006 Dec 15thI know we posted the demise of Ben's last month,....but I just like this larger than life B&W of the old sign,..................but not that old a picture as the street sign is one of the new ones............ Notice the traffic light is Green,..............(not for Ben's)
...............................................Dorval.....................................................................Time to Fly.......................................catch ya later
Thanks Les for the Ville Emard photos. Boy do they bring back memories! We lived on Briand street. The photo of the park titled Monk and Joliceour is really Monk and Hadley I think. Joliceour is next street up from Hadley. Briand Street is parallel to Monk. I remember it because I used to run through the park as a short cut to MacDonald's store to buy bread and movie magazines. That park was close to where we lived on Briand. Around that area, there was also a Funeral Home that my friend and I would stop in after school. I think I was about 8 or 9 and we must have just had this fascination with dead people at that time. I went to Holy Cross school and I would walk from Briand Street. Quite a walk. There's also an A & P store on Monk across from the Funeral Home in that same vicinity as the park. I stole a chocolate bar there once and got caught. I promised I wouldn't do it ever again if the manager didn't tell my folks. They let me go and I never stole again! I remember Angrigon then as bush also. My best friend lived on Monk and I would take a short cut through the lane to her place. Don't remember the street dissecting Monk on the other end, but there was a Steinbergs' store and John Bosco church. We'd walk all the way to Angrigon to play. At that time there were many community gardens there. Italians would grown everything there and my friend and I would steal fresh carrots and peas out of the ground and I remember eating apples. So good! We then moved to Verdun when I was 10, so wasn't around when they started to develop Angrigon. Ben's holds many fond memories for me. Late nights after rehearsals or a performance, or class, my brother's photo is in the Poet's Corner. I took it of him near a bridge. I wonder what will happen to all t he photos. Those certainly were innocent times. Dolly
This shot of Ben's is the only one,I could find in recent threads, that has diffficulty loading,.but I hit the 'refresh ' button,.and it popped back up,.So I'm going to 'copy' it from the post #145 of this thread,.....& paste it here,in #148 .......to see if it works:..........it seems to be working for me at least,...but here's something that you can do ,.when there is no picture ,but should be,.then 'right click' your mouse, and check for the webaddress,.then you can go directly to what ever site the picture was found on,..or you can check it's properties, and find the info that way........Hope that helps...................
Les, I've saved the Ben's photo. There's a scene in my novel in progress in Ben's between my protagonist and a draft dodger. Funny scene and the thing is, I thought Ben's had one of those swinging doors. But literary license...I'm writing fiction not fact, so anything goes. Thanks for the memories. Dolly
Well it's been awhile since we've posted this picture,.......and with all of Our newer members (Welcome Again Btw),.......Here's a real familiar old spot We all have spent a quarter or two in,,,,(maube more, depending on the year),...I lived right next to the old Savoy,......and Remember this area very well,....close to Steinberg's etc etc ,....
I always liked that sign with the Eskimo & Igloo (I think) ,...saying "Come In,.....It's Cool Inside"........................Remember when advertising Air Conditioning was a newish thing..........hahahahahaNowadays We would expect nothing less,.............................now Come on In ------------------ .......and Don't Forget ,........No Running...........and sit behind a girl you like,...and 'bug' her instead of letting her know you like her,...hahahaha
..and a few Short years later ,you may have appreciated a Pizza or two from Rex's........................................................I took this pictue myself on a visit back there ,a long time ago,..but I didn't realize that Parking Meters,...had already started to be a neccessary (moneygrab) by the City....................I think this was taken in the early 80's??I'm not sure,.....but I probably have the negative around somewhere,..and this picture I beleive is in a box somewhere in the house............Yikes are you guys getting that old...............................I'm not, hahahahahaha
Les-F, I like those balconies with the arches on top. I wonder if that style of architechture are original of Verdun homes, I must do research on them. Guy
Yes Guy,.....those arches are neat looking and that whole building certainly looks well built,..with many Granite Blocks as reinforcement,.but decorative as well. There seems to be a large Concrete looking type of plaque in the center at thetop of the building ,usually these were a marker with some sort of symbol or name of the builder(sort of like those houses with the Beaver logo,.....It would be neat if you could take a shot of that ,...but from the picture I posted,it's hard to tell if there is anything written on it.....
Les-F, Can you tell me where that building is situated. I will take a picture on Saturday on my way to the SHGV and I will see if there are any markings on the plaque you refer to. Guy
Yes certainly Guy ,.....it's the corner of 3rd avenue & Wellington,......NW corner,.......if you do go there Guy,.Could you also tajke a shot of each corner,SVP....... one corner NE will be Grover's Mens Wear, Across the street SE should be the old Dominion Store (once a car dealer way back)and on the SW corner used to be the old Donut Store (Master Doughnut) ,......but the building you like is the NW (I think it's still called Rex's Pizza,.....but I'm not certain..................Thanks Guy Our Roving Verdun Reporter & Historian,................that title is going to make for a very long business card....................hahahahahah
Les, Looking at that photo of the Savoy always reminds me of the trip my class made with a couple of nuns (CND) to watch the Ten Commandments with what's his name Heston. I moved to Verdun when I was 10, so must have been in grade 5 when the nuns schlepped us there. Probably the first time I ever entered that theatre. And after that it was a weekly Saturday event. I spent my life there --- lived the movies (fantasy land) and of course ended up buying all those movie star magazines like Photoplay, Screen Mirror, etc. Sandy, do you have any memories of going with the nuns? Dolly
Sandy. Did you ever notice in "The Ten Commandments", when Moses spread the waters......in the background, you could see Noah's Ark stuck on some mountain. Winston Allison

Sandy, (Sandi) I think you're right about the Imperial theatre but somehow I have this memory of going to the Savoy with the nuns for something because it was close to home. Maybe it was Ben Hur? That Heston was in that one too, no? I'll have to get the CD of Jersey Boys. The best music always lives forever. Which reminds me, I was listening to public radio here (CKUA) on Saturday because they have jazz and blues from 5:30 until late and they had the Stones singing Not Fade Away. Remember Not Fade Away? Love the Stones right after the Beatles, of course. Anyway later I was shaking my boody to Buddy Holly and there he was with Not Fade Away. His was the original . Love classic rock. Dolly (Dolli)
Sandy. I am just pulling your leg about Noah's Ark Talking about Grease. I do the treadmill every day to the music of Grease. It sure makes the time go by quickly. Winston Allison
Sandy & Sabby today Sephora died, WHO ??? The Ten Commandments she played the wife of Mose's................better known as "Yvonne DeCarlo" born in Vancouver BC.....................(I didn't know that) ...... ...............................................................................today at 84... Yvonne De Carlo Biography: Birth nameMargaret Yvonne MiddletonNicknamePeggyHeight5' 4" (1.63 m)
Hi Sandy (i), My update weather report is on another link. I've survived the blizzard of 2007! :-) Hmmmm, I don't recall the four seasons having more records. I thought it was the Beatles or Elvis maybe. There's always one in the crowd who has to show off in a theatre! I love muscials. I might have mentioned I saw the original Dreamgirls on Broadway with Jennifer Halliday in the seventies. Now it's a film and Jennifer Hudson is just as good if not better than the original Jennifer. I love the music and have the CD. I liked Chicago, Grease and West Side Story also....Heck, with all this violence happening around the world, people just want to be entertained! Les, Yvonne de Carlo was a beautiful actress...right up there with Sophia Loren. I can't believe she was that old. My God, I'm only 30! Dolly (i)
Sorry Sandy,..........with the Nun thing,I did go to a drive in once with a girl I liked,..and ended up with 'None'I didn't make it a Habit..............and I do know they are quick with a 'ruler' Youch !!Which brings me to the Maltby 'thing' again..........it was once reported he had 12 inches,........but didn't use it as a 'rule'Ok just so the newer members (can I say that).......hahaha Know what were talking about: You girls can explain Mr Maltby,to everybody:Is an explanation neccessary.........hahahahahah
Here you go, again....... Let's just say he was a monumental kind of guy. I still wonder if he 'erected' this monument himself so that he might live on in perpetuity. Or do you think some kind-hearted woman/lover/wife wanted to make him feel good about himself......let me just say that typing this message is as hard (pun intended) as that monument. Cheers.
I now know why some of the letters are missing in the words I have been typing. I need to change my keyboard (typewriter) ribbon. But now matter how hard I try, I can't find that ribbon...... I will keep looking.....
Dave vs. Carl: The Insignificant Championship Series. Who will win?
Sandy, I always kept a spare set of lightening bolts handy.....gotta keep the Verdun guys on their toes.......well.....you know what I mean. It sure is hard to forget Mr. Maltby, isn't it? I bet he was an up-standing fella, don't you?
Winston, Good thing you didn't use Les_F's excuse......fat fingers. But if you find that typewriter ribbon let me know, I'd love to see how you're going to install it. Cheers.
Well here we go again. I still say that picture of Mr Maltby laying in bed making a tent, was a resting period for him. I am pretty sure he took that 36 hour (Cealis?) medicine. He was trying to do a 36 hour marathon, which was probably a monumental task for him. Anyways he still had some time left and was resting up for the final hours. The ladies watching were also there to see if he could stay up for the rest of his time. 36 hours.....WOW.......He is a bigger man than I am!!!!!!!
Thanks for your info on The Jersey Boy's, I myself was into Neil Young , Lenord Cohen, Bob Dylan, The Stones. Does anyone out there remeber the Haunted. We do have a pulp Mill in North Bay Tembeck I believe.
The thing i remember vividly at the CKVL Studio, was the "Amphibian" car that they owned. It was neat to see it drive into the St Lawrence River and "putt" its way around. It had a tough time in the current, but it was interesting to watch none the less
Hi Lyn, Yes I remember the Haunted. A classmate of mine was dating one of the guys and eventually married him. Her name is June but can't recall his name. I think they've divorced since. I remember seeing them play at a venue once. I think at the Bonaventure Curling Club. I liked them because they reminded me of the Rolling Stones. Wonder whatever happened to them? Dolly
Dolly My cousin Dale Smith married Jergen Peters who played in the Haunted they are still together and living in B.C. I also knew a Dolly Who lived in Verdun she used to go out with my brother Bill. I don't know if it is you? I think she married Doug Boran. So good to hear from you . My cousin dale also had her photo taken for the front page of the Gazette when the Beatles played at the forum. Her and other grils were sitting on that huge bench in Attwater park. Lynn
Hi Lyn, Ah, yes, I remember Jergens. He was the cute dark haired one. No, I'm not the same Dolly. Heck I was brought up so strictly, I didn't start dating until I was 21! I married an Albertan and have been living in Edmonton since 1993. I knew the Haunted from a distance and some of my friends were jealous of June because she was going out with one of them! We thought she was a bit of a snob though. The rest of us were wallflowers after all and such groupies! Sigh! The silliness of youth! I'm sure we must have rubbed elbows, if not shoulders, somewhere in Verdun. Such a small world. Does anyone remember another band called Al Nicholls and the Playboys. They were quite popular around the same time. Dolly
Hi Sabby ,.if it's the same Al Nichols,....he also played in a band called Carnival Connection,....and they had 1 hit on the radio ,that I remember,it was called "Poster Man".........he also went on to a star role in the musical"Hair",.....when it first came out in NY (I think it was)as, for The Haunted I Remember them too,.....the did sound alot like the Stones,........."out of time",.....ia one song that comes to mind,.....Montreal had a lot of good groups throughout the late 50's and the 60'sit was a fun time to grow up in,..as the worls seemingly changed before our very eyes.............Verdun atually had a lot of talented (so we thought),bands that played around town,......all the school dances ,as well as the 'Rec' ,.......StWillibrord's Church had dances in the basement,...and of course the schools,....... Funny thing the other night on 'Letterman' (I think it was)Ben E King ,..performed his hit "Stand by Me",.......he also played the at a dance at VCHS,,,,,,,,,,,of course he played that same tune,...(He's had a career of singing Stand By Me,.........he also did Spanish Harlem ,before the Stand by Me song................Lot's of stuff to do & see in those days..........................
I found someone who new Dolly Dealy. I was brought up strictly too , but it never stoped me. It's great you remeber the band the Haunted. I have to tell them about Verdun Connections, Jergens that is. I don't know any of the other members.
It's so funny how this works, I could'nt remember Dolly's last name, but because of this connection I now remember Westley. I wonder were they are now? I turned 50 this past summer ouch. I still feel like a kid more so now that I have found this site. Thanks so much Connie
Hi Les, Yes, he would be the one. I don't think they did as well under Carnival Connection but I do remember Al was very talented and went on to be in Hair in New York. Yes, indeed, there were a lot of good bands around that time. Lyn, the strict upbringing did stop me but like I said, then I turned 21 and made up for lost time. Dolly
Re: Ben E.King and Stand By Me. Great song and I bet he's living on the royalties of that song alone. There was a movie (name escapes me now) but they used that song as part of the theme. It was one of those coming of age movies... Dolly
Someone mentioned the Haunted,..............Here is a link to the Haunted,.........I would never have thought, that they would still be around,.......but I guess they are,.That's kind of neat: http://www.thehaunted.com/ checkout their site,......they did have some good tunes....................................
The Haunted,.......it seems the site does give some of their backgrounds,...and how they got started,..etc etc ,..... it also mentions how they won a Battle of the Bands )I had forgotten all about those),.......but they were popular deals at one time......They used to have them all ovwer the place,.but it seems the Haunted ,won one of these Battles,...in the Montreal Forum,.........that's neat in itself:Also mentions Dave Boxer,...Remember him from CFCF................
Talent: DAVE BOXER Station: CFCF Montreal Date: August 27, 1968 Time: 5:22(Description by Marc Denis)From 1963 to 1966, Dave Boxer is the undisputed champion of Montreal's English-language evening radio landscape on Cuff Cuff (CFCF 600). Armed with his trusty "fanortonizer", a trombone-like whistle used to announce his contest winners, and surfing high on the wave of the British musical invasion, Dave Boxer is "the cool daddy-o on the radd-io" that thousands of teens tune into weeknights, 6-11 p.m ... with transistor radios tucked strategically under the pillow, anticipating the latestBeatles, Dave Clark 5 or JB and the Playboys hit.By the time of this aircheck in August of 1968, Boxer is in his final days on Cuff Cuff as rival 1470 CFOX is now the teen buzz for English language Top 40 music in Montreal. Dave would soon be joining, for a short period of time, the equally-troubled 980 CKGM, a station he appeared on in the early '60s prior to his heyday on CFCF and an address two years away from its major renaissance as a hit music monster. Boxer would later work in radio sales for Standard Broadcasting in Montreal, returning to the airwaves on 95.9 CJFM's Solid Gold Sunday Show in the late-70s to mid-'80s before finally moving on to other business ventures in Vancouver. He's still out on the west coast, now semi or fully-retired.You will hear in the final two minutes of this brief but magical aircheck the nightly signature Boxer show-closer over Boots Randolph's "The Shadow of Your Smile" and the big "Elevensville" send-off "into the land of the giant marshmallows to sleep deliciously ... dee-lli-ciously..."
just an old familiar Corner Store in the old Homeland................Look at the old Delivery Bike..........We did have som,e neat stores around ,..seems like there was always a Grocery/Epicerie store around or a little Candy Store,..........and we always knew just who dished out an extra candy in that little brown candy bag,....Remember those ,I think for a few pennies,we could get a good supply mix of candy,.......of course the Grocery Stores were for tte more serious stuff,....'brick of ice cream' 'family size bottles of Ginger Ale' or whatever 'Softdrink' you favoured,....and of course 'cigs & beer' for the older folks.................hahahahaFun to be a kid in Verdun...........................................
,,,,,,,,and for the Bus Enthusiast out there,...... JMH,...Guy....... and a few others,.......I just came across this site: http://mypage.direct.ca/w/wrmr/ I know your more into MTC stuff,.....but this site has a few pics of older busses,.........more Coach Style,......but who know what you may find onthe different links......................
Levisjeans: Wesley Deley is a police officer in Calgary and has been for several years. Brenda is still living in Verdun and is remarried and has a daughter around 16 (she also has a grown son living in BC). I do have a phone number for Brenda but have not spoken to her in a long time. The last time I spoke to her Dolly was still in Verdun also!
Interesting site re the Haunted. Didn't realize they went through so many transitions. Reading the names of the players, I remembered them when Glen Holmes was part of the band as he married a classmate, June. I understand they've parted since. I remember 1-2-5. Brings back memories of my groupie days and Boxer's "Book for Boxer Bubbies" --- published letters he received from his listeners and unfortunately, there are two of mine in there enthusiastically praising the Beatles . Yep, he was a pretty popular dj and I remember his emceeing dances at the Bonaventure Curling Club. Dolly

Oh how I remember and loved the LANES , kick the can , hide and seek , stando , bunny in the hole and on and on , however not interested in jumping off 2nd storey balcony today into snow pile , NO SNOW , hahahaha hang tough Jimmy
Verdun ( Church av looking down Evelyn) When you look down at the end of the street, you can see one on Montreal's taller buildings,...but it's really not that far away,...Yet as kids ,it was a big deal to 'make the trip' all the way Downtown....... the above shot of Rielle & Verdun Av's ,..would have been taken almost from directly in front of the old St Willibrord's School (Boy's grade school).....it was replaced by a much smaller school, essentially built in the old schools ,shoolyard closer to Willibrord................ Just a shot of 5th avenue.......................it always makes me laugh to think, that Everyone always wished ,to one day,be able to get a 1st floor flat, (sort of Our version of Westmount)..........hahahahah and to have a front yard well that would have been like living on the 'Ponderosa' hahahahah Remember that map of the Ponderosa ,every Sunday Night on TV .....................................................Have Fun

Keith
No Ice for the rinks,...then you doit the old fashion way: these kids don't have too many friends it seems,......we had whole teams out there..........hahahaha smaller family's I guess.....................
Hi Keith the name of the show is Paul Reids Christmas (I think that's what your referring to).... the show has been on every Sunday on CJAD for the month of December 6pm-9pm Paul Reid's Christmas here's the direct link: http://www.cjad.com/holidayschedule Look's like tomorow ,will be the last shot,.............6pm-9pm (Eastern Times),. So adjust the time for your area of the Country,....... as for the size of the houses in Verdun,....I think your guess of 1000 sgft. would be fair assessment ,.....I suspect a little under that,...but I think I have a floor plan from some site or other,....I will try to find it for you: but Guy5479 ,.......may have access to info like that ,maybe even a schematic(draft of a floor plan) at the SHGV, center..........he's Our resident expert on Verdun facts & figures ,and history ......................
Guy
Thanks Guy,.....I suspectmost of the flats were similar layout's with slight variation,...... as to the size I would agree with that roughly 850 figure, give or take, I had to smile to myself when you mentioned the 'cot'..........hahahaha We had one too,and I'd bet many of us did,.......to accomodate us all,.... sharing a room was common place,.........it wasn't till later in Lasalle that I actually had my first own room.............hahahahah We all learned to share, like it or not,........Funny thing I look back and don't really Remember it being all that bad........and besides those long hallways, made for a great spot to play hockey,.......hahahahaha Thanks Guy
Guy. You must have come from the rich part of town. Ours have one less room. Winston Allison

Winston, Galt ave was considered the poor section of Verdun. We always thought that the new section was at the other end, starting past the avenues. Guy
Yup Guy,..past the avenues,.starting at Desmarchais ,as a fancy street, Also above Bannantyne 3rd av & up had some nice fancy type self contained homes,.... and of course Brown Blvd, and the homes around there, but above Beurling towards Champlain,. and of course Verdun's Westmount,......(Crawford Park)............hahahaha but we were almost all in the same boat ,(so to speak),.......We had to work: hahahahah................................
Don't forget Beaty above Bannantyne. Big buck places.
I wonder if Verdun still feels like separate neighbourhoods like we thought, I mean to the present day residents,........ Remember some nice homes to around Lasalle blvd,...on the curve past Woodland towards where Verdun Av meets Lasalle Remember outside one of the mayor;s of Verdun house there were two poles,.one on each side of the entrance ,I think they had Round White Glass Ball typ shades,..with what I think was the City of Verdun logo ?? Was it O'reilly's,........???? Edbro ,or Jimmy (kungfu ) you guys would Remember that ,..or DannyB too, not much you've forgotten about Verdun either it seems........ I think the house had a Granite Stone facing,??
Look at the size of this building,.......I wonder why they felt the need to build such large buildings,......most of the space seems wasted,....but I guess grandeur & some form of oppulence was needed to attract followers...... Nowadays it seems these places are built a lot smaller......imagine what it must cost to heat an old building like this,.........Yikes !!! and it wasn't because it was cheap to build,.....
Here's a shot from a little while back Charlevoix St .....Look at the old Bus Stop on the corner? Man I Remember thinking ,whenever I went to a new/different city,....Why didn't they have such simple signs to designate a Bus Stop............hahahahah It's funny how initially when we arrive somewhere else other than Our hometown of Montreal(Verdun) etc etc ,......We immediately think 'they've got it all wrong' it should be done 'the way we do it'................hahahahaha but also Look at the Police/FireDepartment CallBox,....on the pole on the corner,....those were a great idea,..but I seldom ever saw one used ,except by pranksters........hahah ,but in the earlydays ,when not everyone had a phone (if anyone, I Imagine).......these CallBoxes.........were the 'cell phone'of the day........Imagine a Direct Link to the Closest Fire Department or Police Station (in many cases one & the same),....and whoever answered the phone ,made an immediate descision,as to whether it was an idiot calling or a legitiamte 'Call for Help'...................Most often he made the right call,.. Quite something ,in the evolution of some sort of Social Order..... & in those days the Cop on the Beat ,could & would kick your a$$ if he thought or caught you doing something stupid,.........hahahahah and if he did catch you ,and dished out any type of 'penalty for your stupidity',then You would only hope it ended there and didn't go further and tell your oldman,.................Cause then You'd Really Get it............(so I've heard)......hahahahaha I love the old time Growing up in Montreal/Verdun.or any where from around there,...cause i think we learned some common sense (Although ,....it took 'some' a lot longer to 'sink in' than others.............) ...............hahahahahahaha
Remember Community Clinics........??? When most things could still be cured ,by a 'stiff' warning (so to speak)...........hahahaha and a pile of pills, not to be taken with alcohol............now where in those days could you find anything but alcohol.........what with all those beer stores on every corner, no bottled water around then,................hahahahah .........or the advent of 'the Pill'...........now don't miss a day ,turn that dial with care.......... ..............Oh Oh , better hand me back that Lightning Back..........hahahah ............Yikes !!! Sandy isn't this your baton ? hahahaha
AH!!!!! The pill. A boon to "MAN" kind. Life is a real joy!!!! Winston Allison.

Remember when the garbage trucks could actually 'fit' in the lanes, now they are too big,and so garbage pickup is now done from the front of the house,... it was a 'big deal' as a kid to look out the back window (if it wasn't frosted &iced up),....to watch the trucks go rumbling through the lane,...Oil Trucks,Garbage Trucks,.and of course all the peddlars we used to have ,.the Rag man ,the ice men,..the scissors & knife sharpeners,........quite a bit of Commerce was done through those old lanes.........oh yes the Coal ,the Ice delivery's too ( a little futher back) but still was an interesting place to watch as a kid,....................Oh Yes ,and we learne to scurry up onto the snowbanks in the winter to avoid being run over by oil truck which was always barrelling down the lane.............(always liked that expression 'Barrelling' I don't know what was so interesting about the above photo for adults,..but this shot attracted a few onlookers..........hahahahah ........Look at how small these trucks really were,...........Oh yea that's probably the basement of some of those new condos built on the old GArbage Dump, landfill near the river Yikes, can you say 'methane' ..

Speaking of Verdun garbage trucks we had a dog that sewallowed up everything so we called him Old Sanivan. Ed
Some may Remember this plae ,.However I douybt you remember it from actually being there during construction......... . Quite the frame work for this old building,.......... Opened in 1927,............and the dances held in the basement were to create a a following ,that if they weren't going upstairs during the week for confession,...They probably should have been................hahahahahah and I won't tell you how many 'mickey's were snuk in through the basement windows,....Yup even those screen gates over the windows ,were nothing but (well) Window dressing..............hahahahahaha Many youngsters got in through the window,......but I won't reveal how just yet............hahahaha
Now this old structure was at the corner of Rielle & Verdun Avenue, .........and I think it's DannyB who Remembers what the inscription was at the top of the building dead center below the cross..................... not the best picture of this long gone building ,....but many of us went to this old building on a daily basis.......................... (I lived over on the next block ,to right of this intersection,.......) .....and my guess is that the photographer took this picture while standing in a dirt/gravel parking lot that was home to a couple of Billboards .....that a few of us used to climb, with great regularity I might ad.................hahahahahah Remember sneaking cigarettes around this area too.......as well as a block over to the left, where the old Monument used to be.............................. Some of the Catholic Girls here on the site may Remember this building: ...actually anyone Boys or Girl will or might or should Remember that building ,that was located between Rielle (Girls Side) & Willibrord Av. (Boys Side)......... DannyB ..................I think you should tell the 'Bell Story' again..............hahahahaha
If you look behind this group, you can see the top of the chainlink fence which kept the border between the Boys Side of the School from the Girls side segragated.......(The High School that is ) Great picture ,......checkout the Flags,.........the Union Jack (not even just a Red Ensign,............tells us that this picture most definetly was taken ,at least prior to Feb 15th 1965.....cause that's the day the 'New' Canadian Flag came out,......so my guess here ,is late 50's or very early 60's ?????
A back alley on Berri St,....taken Dec 26th,2006 Looks like Montreal got a little of the white stuff on Boxing Day,.....(noone told us..........hahahaha) Here's the corner of Lajeunesse & Louvain.....Remember as a pedestrian having to slosh through that piled up slush at each corner.........(I hate that) hahahahah: Mind you it almost looks like ,the stuff was disappearing quick enough,as it looks a bit mild there..........(how you tell that from a picture I'm not sure,.....hahaha but that's what I think)
Now this shot was taken the day before on Dec 25th,.......and aside from a Seasonal Greeeting on the sign,....there appears to be nothing Seasonal about the bare streets in the background,....So the snow only popped in on Boxing Day ......Nice............ "Remember the ad for this spot in the 60's ? --"Ding-a-ling-a-ling,that's all you Do........ ........Poot ,poot ,poot...............StHubert BBQ-----"

André Durocher, Rivard's companion, was apprehended by police on May 28, 1965, after an anonymous call placed the fugitive in a Montreal apartment. Rivard was finally caught on July 16, 1965 in a Woodlands cottage, near Chateauguay. He and associates Fred Cadieux and Sébastien Boucher were lounging around in bathing suits when police burst into the cottage.

Some older Cote St Paul shots: Montreal Light Heat & Power...............we spoke of them recently,.....was it JMH or Guy perhaps,....in anycase ,that's an old photo. ......and a final shot of Ville Emard
Some older buildings ,.....probably still around.???
Apartment building on Anger Street ? Mom,....or HappyDi do you guys recognize this ? ..........Looks like a large building..............
I don't believe there were any apartments on Angers. Maybe Dianne can fill us in a little more.
Of course, that was eons ago, when I lived there! Of course, I'm not that old, am I? Naa, course not. But when I lived there, there weren't any apartments.
Hi Mom I also found another picture listing an address on D'leglise ,is it possible that the other building was on Church as well.....they seemed to be similar instyle ,.and reportdedly from around the early 70's,.... meanwhile Here's ashot listed as Angrion Park,.I didn't know they set up Christmas displays like this little village ? ..................Do You recall this stuff ??
The apartments on/near Church are a possibility. We lived in the poorer, working area of Ville Emard (English, French, Italian, Black) and the highest we had in apartment buildings is 2 stories (that I can remember). Angrinon Park, well now I feel downright ancient. They were just developing the park into something other than bush just around the time I left (which was about 1966-67). Sure looks neat though.
#308 Trinitaires Ok this is a little newer: Can you say Monk Monk & Jolicouer .................................Looks like this place has had a few name changes ????
???
Ok where's this ? ...............or this :
The newer building on the corner of Monk and Jolicoeur wasn't there when I paraded up and down Monk Blvd. But I do remember the fire station was just one or two lots north on Monk from this corner. I remember having to go there with my bike to get a licence plate for it! The fireman used to sit around with the big doors open, and they would invite us kids in to look around and sit in the trucks. What a thrill.
I think the first one is probably Jolicoeur Street, and for some reason, I think the Woo's Cafe is on Monk, probably near where the original DiLallo's used to be.
Well I don't feel so bad now Mom,....I left LaBelleProvince./////in the 70's, and i don't recall alot of the stuff,....I always thoguht of Angrion Park as being more Ville Lasalle,...rather than CoteStPaul/VilleEamrd How's this area,..............any more familiar ? Looks like the guy's house across the street ,is either in love with Bordeaux Look,.........oe he's had some uninvitef guests..............hahahaha and the guy on this side is getting ready to fill up the trailer,.& move out West ???........................hahahahah
Look how the guy painted the brick on the lower part of the house.......hello......how much more paint would it have taken to do the top portion......hello
Mom, The bricks above were probably ok. He probably painted the bottom ones with a thick rubber paint to hold them together. Don't walk close. Ed
"Fire Escapes".............................another thing we all grew up with,.. Remember jumping up to pull the stairs part down ,so we could sneak up the fire escapes to 'rooftop' ..........just to play,......... this next picture is unreal,..that just a few short days ago Montreal had snow, yet today they are enjoying really mild temps........ the aboce pics from Dec 27 th 2006.......................................Amazing
Remember this view,........of course you do,or you never lived in Verdun/Montreal in the winter.................. I always hated the stairs not being cleaned properly,..not that I liked when i had to go & shovel the stairs,...but if you were going to clean them ,....do it right................hahahahahah Otherwise, you always have those ruts from the old footprints on there,...and if you were quick enough ,you could get all the snow off with a broom, and not have to shovel,....

Dolly
This shot of Ben's is the only one,I could find in recent threads, that has diffficulty loading,.but I hit the 'refresh ' button,.and it popped back up,.So I'm going to 'copy' it from the post #145 of this thread,.....& paste it here,in #148 .......to see if it works: ..........it seems to be working for me at least,...but here's something that you can do ,.when there is no picture ,but should be,.then 'right click' your mouse, and check for the webaddress,.then you can go directly to what ever site the picture was found on,..or you can check it's properties, and find the info that way........Hope that helps...................
Dolly
There'sa lot of pics of Ben around ,.but I thought that one was a little different too,.glad you saved it,......
Well it's been awhile since we've posted this picture,.......and with all of Our newer members (Welcome Again Btw),.......Here's a real familiar old spot We all have spent a quarter or two in,,,,(maube more, depending on the year),... I lived right next to the old Savoy,......and Remember this area very well,.... close to Steinberg's etc etc ,....
I always liked that sign with the Eskimo & Igloo (I think) ,...saying "Come In,.....It's Cool Inside"........................Remember when advertising Air Conditioning was a newish thing..........hahahahaha Nowadays We would expect nothing less,..... ........................now Come on In ------------------ .......and Don't Forget ,........No Running...........and sit behind a girl you like,...and 'bug' her instead of letting her know you like her,...hahahaha
..and a few Short years later ,you may have appreciated a Pizza or two from Rex's.......................................... ..............I took this pictue myself on a visit back there ,a long time ago,..but I didn't realize that Parking Meters,...had already started to be a neccessary (moneygrab) by the City....................I think this was taken in the early 80's?? I'm not sure,.....but I probably have the negative around somewhere,..and this picture I beleive is in a box somewhere in the house............Yikes are you guys getting that old...............................I'm not, hahahahahaha
There seems to be a large Concrete looking type of plaque in the center at the top of the building ,usually these were a marker with some sort of symbol or name of the builder(sort of like those houses with the Beaver logo,..... It would be neat if you could take a shot of that ,...but from the picture I posted,it's hard to tell if there is anything written on it.....
Les-F, Can you tell me where that building is situated. I will take a picture on Saturday on my way to the SHGV and I will see if there are any markings on the plaque you refer to. Guy
Yes certainly Guy ,.....it's the corner of 3rd avenue & Wellington,......NW corner,.......if you do go there Guy,.Could you also tajke a shot of each corner,SVP....... one corner NE will be Grover's Mens Wear, Across the street SE should be the old Dominion Store (once a car dealer way back) and on the SW corner used to be the old Donut Store (Master Doughnut) , ......but the building you like is the NW (I think it's still called Rex's Pizza,.....but I'm not certain..................Thanks Guy Our Roving Verdun Reporter & Historian,................that title is going to make for a very long business card....................hahahahahah

Yvonne De Carlo Biography: Birth name Margaret Yvonne Middleton Nickname Peggy Height 5' 4" (1.63 m)
Dolly (i)

Hi Sandy
Thanks for your info on The Jersey Boy's, I myself
was into Neil Young , Lenord Cohen, Bob Dylan, The Stones. Does anyone out there
remeber the Haunted. We do have a pulp Mill in
North Bay Tembeck I believe.
Lynn
Dolly
Dolly
My cousin Dale Smith married Jergen Peters who
played in the Haunted they are still together and living in B.C.
I also knew a Dolly Who lived in Verdun she used to
go out with my brother Bill. I don't know if it is you? I think she married Doug
Boran.
So good to hear from you . My cousin dale also had
her photo taken for the front page of the Gazette when the Beatles played at the
forum. Her and other grils were sitting on that huge bench in Attwater
park.
Dolly
I knew a Dolly Deley who married a Doug Bourne. I actually knew her sister Brenda also who was closer to my age (56). Connie
Hi Sabby ,.if it's the same Al Nichols,....he also played in a band called Carnival Connection,....and they had 1 hit on the radio ,that I remember, it was called "Poster Man".........he also went on to a star role in the musical "Hair",.....when it first came out in NY (I think it was) as, for The Haunted I Remember them too,.....the did sound alot like the Stones,........."out of time",.....ia one song that comes to mind,..... Montreal had a lot of good groups throughout the late 50's and the 60's it was a fun time to grow up in,..as the worls seemingly changed before our very eyes............. Verdun atually had a lot of talented (so we thought),bands that played around town,......all the school dances ,as well as the 'Rec' ,.......StWillibrord's Church had dances in the basement,...and of course the schools,....... Funny thing the other night on 'Letterman' (I think it was) Ben E King ,..performed his hit "Stand by Me",.......he also played the at a dance at VCHS,,,,,,,,,,,of course he played that same tune,...(He's had a career of singing Stand By Me,.........he also did Spanish Harlem ,before the Stand by Me song................ Lot's of stuff to do & see in those days..........................
Sabby
I found someone who new Dolly Dealy. I was brought
up strictly too , but it never stoped me. It's great you remeber the band the
Haunted. I have to tell them about Verdun Connections, Jergens that is. I don't
know any of the other members.
Lynn
Connie
It's so funny how this works, I could'nt remember
Dolly's last name, but because of this connection I now remember
Westley.
I wonder were they are now? I turned 50 this past
summer ouch. I still feel like a kid more so now that I have found this
site. Thanks so much Connie
Lynn
Hi Les, Yes, he would be the one. I don't think they did as well under Carnival Connection but I do remember Al was very talented and went on to be in Hair in New York. Yes, indeed, there were a lot of good bands around that time. Lyn, the strict upbringing did stop me but like I said, then I turned 21 and made up for lost time. Dolly
Re: Ben E.King and Stand By Me. Great song and I bet he's living on the royalties of that song alone. There was a movie (name escapes me now) but they used that song as part of the theme. It was one of those coming of age movies... Dolly
Someone mentioned the Haunted,... ...........Here is a link to the Haunted,.........I would never have thought, that they would still be around,.......but I guess they are,.That's kind of neat: http://www.thehaunted.com/ checkout their site,......they did have some good tunes....................................
The Haunted,.......it seems the site does give some of their backgrounds,...and how they got started,..etc etc ,..... it also mentions how they won a Battle of the Bands )I had forgotten all about those),.......but they were popular deals at one time...... They used to have them all ovwer the place,.but it seems the Haunted ,won one of these Battles,...in the Montreal Forum,.........that's neat in itself: Also mentions Dave Boxer,...Remember him from CFCF................
Talent: DAVE BOXER
Station: CFCF Montreal
Date: August 27, 1968
Time: 5:22 (Description by Marc Denis) From 1963 to 1966, Dave Boxer is the undisputed champion of Montreal's English-language evening radio landscape on Cuff Cuff (CFCF 600). Armed with his trusty "fanortonizer", a trombone-like whistle used to announce his contest winners, and surfing high on the wave of the British musical invasion, Dave Boxer is "the cool daddy-o on the radd-io" that thousands of teens tune into weeknights, 6-11 p.m ... with transistor radios tucked strategically under the pillow, anticipating the latest Beatles, Dave Clark 5 or JB and the Playboys hit. By the time of this aircheck in August of 1968, Boxer is in his final days on Cuff Cuff as rival 1470 CFOX is now the teen buzz for English language Top 40 music in Montreal. He's still out on the west coast, now semi or fully-retired. You will hear in the final two minutes of this brief but magical aircheck the nightly signature Boxer show-closer over Boots Randolph's "The Shadow of Your Smile" and the big "Elevensville" send-off "into the land of the giant marshmallows to sleep deliciously ... dee-lli-ciously..."
just an old familiar Corner Store in the old Homeland................ Look at the old Delivery Bike..........We did have som,e neat stores around ,..seems like there was always a Grocery/Epicerie store around or a little Candy Store,..........and we always knew just who dished out an extra candy in that little brown candy bag,....Remember those ,I think for a few pennies,we could get a good supply mix of candy,....... of course the Grocery Stores were for tte more serious stuff,....'brick of ice cream' 'family size bottles of Ginger Ale' or whatever 'Softdrink' you favoured,....and of course 'cigs & beer' for the older folks.................hahahaha Fun to be a kid in Verdun...........................................
,,,,,,,,and for the Bus Enthusiast out there,......
Conniekoz
Thanks for the info I hung around Wesley, I don't
know if he would remeber me.
Dolly
My cousin told me that Dave Boxer opened a Montreal style deli in Vancouver. Unfortunately for Dave the deli didn't make it.
