Scotty Bowman - VHS 1950
Here it is, the picture of Scotty Bowman in the VHS 1950 Yearbook. I scutinized 1949 to 1957 VHS yearbooks but I did not find Wm Shatner. Can someone give me the year and the school he attended. Other information to follow. Guy
There are two seperate bios of Bill Shatner floating around. One says he went to Verdun High and the other says he went to West Hill High. I tend to believe he went to West Hill as I have seen dozens of V.H. yearbooks. Plus I don't ever remember his name being bandied about Verdun until recently. I'm about the same age as him and I don't ever his name being spoken in high school.. Ed
In the Wikpedia entry it states thet Shatner went to Westhill High. I also find claims that he went to Baron Bing and many stating that he attended Verdun High. None claim that he graduated. My previous entry for his date of birth was 2 years off. He was born in 31. A website on the ghosts of West Hill shows a photo of William Shatner in a football team shot: http://www.education.mcgill.ca/history/highschools/Monklands/ This website also sites the many claims of Shatner attending VHS. I guess we will have to find a way to ask the man himself.
Well I'm pretty sure ,that with him standing in front of VHS,.and proclaiming that he went to this school,.and found himself in fights (because he was Jewish-------his words),......and he won some & lost some ( his words),...but he explained it quite well, with the groups of students gathering around in a circle and screaming "Fight ,...Fight...." anyone who went to school in Verdun will Remember this ritual,of the two combatants, surrounded by a bunch of students ,all chanting Fight Fight,.....if you never experienced this,..then you either never went to school during these times or this school,.......becuase we all fought with either 'the Protestants,.or the French,....or both,........hahahahahahahaI grew up an English Catholic, and lived right btwn. a French Catholic School (on Rielle near Champlain)...& the infamous Bannantyne English Protestant School,......................I got to fight with all of them..........hahahahbecause the French kids came down Rielle Av,......and the Protestants came down Gordon Av,...........and I lived btwn Rielle & Gordon on Verdun Av............hahahahahah these were the introduction years, and my years in St Willibrord,......which only prepeared us for Our Own Schoolyard shenanigans.........for which We little Catholic Boys/Bastards (your choice),...we got the Strap........hahahahahah It was a Right of Passage..................we got the strap ,more often than we fought with our rival schools..........hahahahaha Unless we needed to put a team together for hockey,.baseball,.football,...or whatever,.....then all nationaities were more than welcome............So I beleive Mr Shatner ,.and I beleive my eyes, which saw him standing in front of VHS during the filming of this A&E Biography, that I just saw......As far as graduating from VHS,...I did not hear that,.but he also went to school at McGill,.....so perhaps a more detailed version of his academic record would be available through them...................
Guy good job on finding this info on Scotty Bowman,.........and in reading his yearbook quotes,...it seesm he was always destined to become a Hockey Name,.......and He certainly accomplished that,.....a boy from Verdun becomming the : "Winningest Coach in Hockey"not a bad achievement for a boy from Verdun......................
Ed, I tend to agree with you Ed that Wm Shatner never went to VHS, but to West Hill HS as my search yesterday at the SHGV did not turn up anything on him in the year books 1949-1957 although we don't have year 1952. Regarding Scotty Bowman, I found several other Bowmans who are no doubt related, such as Freda Bowman, S. Bowman, R. Bowman and Jack (Flash) Bowman per enclosed photo wich appears in the 1954 issue. Guy
I would venture a guess that William Shatner was a "scrapper" and may have been "excused" from Westhill High. He may have had to travel to a school in another area. Westhill was also under a different schoolboard. Maybe this too is why we see claims that he also went to Baron Bing. The "football team" picture that Shatner appears in at Westhill is from 1947. #21on the "B" is listed as Shatner. No first name or initial. http://www.education.mcgill.ca/history/highschools/westhill/yearbooks/classof47/4768.jpg Westhill has taken up a challenge to get all of it's yearbooks online. They are doing well.
Well it was definelty VHS that he brought a film crew to,...........for A&E,perhaps he didn't graduate,..as he did quit a few things in his life to pursue acting,He did go to McGill, then non to the Stratford film festival, where he did a few plays, etc etc ,..........I'm going to 'tend to agree' with Bill Shatner, that He went to VHS..........hahahahahahah(although he could have pcked 'any' school to film in front of,maybe he's just a BS'er......hahahaha I doubt that he's even been to outterspace, let alone another Galaxy.............hahahahaha "For God's Sake Jim,.......I'm a Verdunite.........not an Historian"hahahahahahaThere are many William Shatner websites,...perhaps one of them might be his own site?? ...He might have a blog ?? .......who knows,.....
Guy, Thanks for posting those old grad photos. Freda Bowman was/is in my mom's age group. She is Scotty's sister. I'm pretty sure we have members out there that can find pics of their relatives on these pages. I wonder if Gordon Drummond later went on to teach at VHS and Charlie Campbell might have had children that went to school with me at Bannantyne and VHS. Shatner appears in the 1947 Westhill High Annual but not in the 1948. Do you have access to the VHS "48 annual? You should look in the photos of sport teams and maybe drama club if you can.
One thing about Bill Shatner,....he does have a sense of humour:here's a clip from the 'Just for Laughs' festval in Montreal " I Am CANADIAN " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1CwZgb_iAI .....................
Maggie, I am going to Verdun tomorrow and will check in the 1948 VHS yearbook for a Wm Shatner. Regarding Scotty Bowman, I looked in the Lovells Directory to see where he lived. In 1950, there are 2 Bowmans listed as follows: Geo S. Bowman, RCAF, 421 Willibrord L. Bowman elk, CPR, 1104 Argyle Can someone tel us at what address he lived. I tend to think that perhaps he lived on Argyle, if so, I will take a picture of the house. Guy
Maggie and Les-F, I did not find any Wm Shatner in the 1948 Yearbook. However, I did find D. Marshall goaltender, isn't he Don Mrshall who played for the Canadiens. Also, wasn't G. Hollingsworth another Canadien Player ? Guy
The group pictured here has won a collective 33 Stanley Cup chamionships! Pictured are Donny Marshall (2nd from left), Elmer Lach (3rd from left), Phil Goyette (5th from right), Dollard St. Laurent (4th from right), Henri Richard (3rd from right) and Rejean Houle (2nd from right). Good Detective work Guy,.......and I beleive your right with those two other names.......
I spoke to my brother Ken last night, he thought Scottie lived on 5th Ave...he wasn't positive about that. Scott lived with Ken in Peterborough when he first moved here to coach the Peterborough Petes before getting his own apartment..(.Judy Brown)
Since Wm Shatner was born in 1931, can someone tell me what year range he would have attended VHS. With this information, I can contrate my search in that time period at the SHGV. Guy

My mom thought that Freda (Scottie's sister) lived on third, between Verdun Avenue and Bannantyne. The only Bowman listed in the Lovell directory in that area was on 5th. Another puzzle to be solved.......................
On the same page as Scotty Bowman, in the 1950 VHS Yearbook, is Audrey Bostock, also seen here with two of her friends: photograph from "Faded Photographs" an album of Reita Lummis' pictures. This photo might be of interest to a member here as well:
This is definitely a picture of my sister Joan...told her about it, and we were trying to figure out who George was? Joan now lives in Atlanta...any information on picture would be helpful, Thanks, Judy
That picture of George & Joan is great,it really shows just how quickly it drops off to the river ,.those banks were fairly steep,.........it was in the mid 60's roughly that they started to 'reclaim' or fill in the river ............and today from the pictures we've seen, they have large tracts of land ,which allows for a very nice greenbelt along the waterfront,.....reducing the boardwalk to merely a path in a park now,.....Love those old photographs,...and it's even better when someone out there recognizes someone in the picture,as is the case here. That's why We like to keep 'asking' everyone to post any photo of growing up,and maybe someone will make a contact with an old friend,or be able to ad some background to the picture, etc etc .........We all have that Common Denominator,.....growing up in Verdun (Montreal),.......and so we all lived somewhat similar lives,by playing in the same parks (decades apart in some cases) but nevertheless, they were the same parks,...same schools,....went to the old Auditorium , Natatorium,...Restaurants,......Churches ,...and stores for shopping,....and we all played as kids on the very same streets.....it makes it really easy to relate to anyones old photos,as they could be any one of us ,in any given decade..........and it seems 'inflation was a big factor in those years,...cause we all seem to be able to buy bagfull of candy ,for pennies.......hahahahahahah Thanks for posting those pics again MaggieMck
I am trying to pinpoint exactly where that picture of George and Joan was taken. I see boats and nun's island in the bakcground. Can anybody tell us at what foot of the street it is taken. I would like to see a picture of the old Leblanc wharf from the late 40s early 50s. with the extended elevated jetty. Guy
Another obseravation of mine is the reeds ahead of nun's island. This was a breeding ground for fish and ducks. I did a lot of fishing there. Of course those weeds are no longer there, victim of progress. Guy
Looking at the overhead wire going down to the wharfs and the small rock pile between the mainland and nuns island I think the area is at the foot of Woodland. ave. The stone post and railing and date of picture confirms the wooden boardwalk had been replaced by 1949
HI, I WAS JUST WONDERING WHY I'MN GETTING OTHER PEOPLES MAIL? WOULD YOU HAVE ANY IDEA? THANKS, JANET

No doubt at all about "Bucky" Hollingsworth and Donnie Marshall. Both NHLers were VHSers.

Guy, I would think it would have been between 1945 - 1950. This would put him at age 14 and allow for any, ahemmmm, do overs. Cheers.
Linda, Since I have already looked in 1948-49 and 50, I will look in 1945-46 and 47 on my next trip to the SHGV. Guy
I remember Scottie lived on 6th.avenue. Bob Allen
