It was just a week ago that Ruth wished us all a Merry Christmas. She was packing for an exciting trip from Florida to the frozen north (Edmonton). There was going to be an Xmas reunion with her Mother and two brothers.
Ruth died that very day.
Ruth married and moved to Plattsburgh around 1960. After many years there, She and her family moved to Florida where she opened and ran a diner until just a few years ago.
She never became a U.S. citizen. She always missed Verdun, her family and the friends of her youth.
Ruth was part of the Melrose Avenue Gang. We all graduated around 1957 and 58.
Three of our group have passed away this year 2006. Ruth Armstrong, Don Dougall and Jimmy Adams.
Ruth loved being part of Verdun Connections, It kept her memories of Verdun alive.

I'm very Sorry & sad to hear that,...Although I didn't know her personally,I felt like I did sort of know here,......She always particpated in the messages,.by reading & posting her thoughs at time,.....I know she was one who appreciated the Connection with all of us through this site,...... Wayne can you let us know what city newspaper her obit may be in,...I would like to post in our Memoriam section,.......Please convey a message of condolence to her family,.....We will miss her ,................... Wayne. Thank you for the information on Ruth Armstrong. She and her family lived across the street from me. She lived at 846 3rd Avenue. That is so sad. We can be thankful that she was a member of Verdun Connections, and was able share some of her time with us, and we with her. Winston Allison

I was stunned to sign learn of Ruth's passing. Ruth was a beautiful person and I had many wonderful conversations with her about Verdun, Plattsburgh, Florida and The Westmount Fire Department where her Father was a Fireman. Today I found myself mourning the loss of Ruth Armstrong. I never met her, never thought I would, but she touched my life through Verdun Connections and for that I am thankful.

Ruth's daughter in law told me that this was very sudden and that the family is totally in shock. Ruth was about to travel to Edmonton to visit her mother. Valerie told me that as terrible as this is that they are thankful that this did not happen on the airplane while traveling to Edmonton. I did not want to ask any questions, just state my sorrow. Valerie did not mention any health problems with Ruth however. When I would e mail Ruth I would always ask how things are in upstate Florida and she would always say things were fine. Poor Ruth, this is so unbelievable. It's a message to the rest of us. Enjoy every moment, keep your friendships and don't let little things bother you. If I hear any additional news I will post it. Merry Christmas to you Winston and to everyone else. It would be nice if we all could remember Ruth on Christmas Day, she was a wonderful person-Walter
Thank you so much Walter. I am still in the twilight zone. We never know what tomorrow holds. The is a reminder that we need to be mindful how we treat others. Sometimes we are not as attentive as we should be. Maybe this is our lesson for this Christmas season. We MUST never miss an opportunity to tell someone we love them, or to make that phone call before it is to late, even if it just to say hello, and to ask how someone is doing. I have been thinking exactly what you put in to words. I hope you had a great Christmas. We went to Cape Coral, Florida to have Christmas with our son, daughter in law and grandson. I have not logged on the computer for over a week, and I was shocked to hear about Ruth...my thoughts and prayers are with her family. Ruth and I graduated in 1958...we were not in the same class, but I remember her as being a very quiet, caring person. I think she was going to celebrate her 65th birthday this month. A lesson for all of us to give thanks every day and not to sweat the small stuff...RIP Ruth

A final note on Ruth's passing. She has been cremated and after a small service in Florida, her ashes are being shipped to Edmonton to be kept by her Mother and brother Art. There will be a ceremony in the spring in Montreal where Ruth will be buried with her father. Mr. Armstrong was a retired member of the Westmount Fire Dept.

Re: your question on the cause of Ruth's passing. I've been told that the death certificate states congenital heart failure and breast cancer. It appears she died in her sleep with her bags packed and ready to go in the morning.
