The Hit Parade on CKVL

Hello Everyone:

I have fond memories of time spent listening to the Hit Parade on my hometown station, CKVL in the fifties and sixties. I was proud of the fact that our own station had such good taste and listened to it rather than the Montreal stations, which didn't play much music in the afternoons. At night, of course, nothing could beat the American stations, such as WKBW from Buffalo and WPTR from Albany.

As I recall, the show was called "Hits on Parade" and started at 2:00 PM. It was hosted by Hall Wardell. Later on there was the "Palmares Americain", hosted by Leon LaChance, and finally the "Palmares canadien," after "les nouvelles Ipana" at six o'clock.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Regards from NickO

Here's something i didn't realise,.....Hal Wardell origianlly came from Vancouver: but he was very instrumental in finding local Montreal Talent, and giving them airtime:   Radio and television in Montreal and throughout much of North America was gong thorugh some serious expansion. Programmers were always in a frenzy to find local amature (read: free) acts to fill the slots until 'proven' network material came on. One such radio show was CKVL's 'Call Me Uncle' hosted by Hal Wardell, formerly of Vancouver's CFUN. His show was extremely popular and drew talent to the station's Verdun studios like bees to honey! ......................................................................... here's the link to the full story that contained the above blurb: http://www.brokenpencil.com/excerpts/excerpt.php?excerptid=30   ...........................................................................  I also came across this announcement from this past July 2006, ( I don't know if this would be the same guy,.but it is possible)   WARDELL, Harold (Hal) Monday, 10 Jul 2006 Chilliwack Progress Chilliwack, BC Harold (Hal) Wardell, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 10, 2006 at Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 76 years.
He was born December 3, 1929 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
He was predeceased by his son Robert. Hal is survived by his wife Diana, children: Charles (Ellen) of Airdrie, Alberta, John of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Elizabeth of Richmond, B.C. and his four grandchildren Lauren, Rachel and Braydon Wardell of Airdrie, Alberta and Jessica Thompson of Richmond, B.C.
Visitation will be held at Greendale Mennonite Brethern Church 6550 Sumas Prairie Rd., Chilliwack B.C. at 10:00 A.M. Monday July 17, 2006 with burial to follow at Vedder View Gardens Cemetery, 44675 Watson Road, Chilliwack, B.C.
Memorial Service to follow in the Greendale Mennonite Brethren Church at 1:00 P.M. Pastor Reg Toews officiating.
...............................Could this be the same Hal Wardell ????

I remember Hal Wardell, the hit parade and definitely Call Me Uncle ... when I was a little boy, my aunt dragged me to that and I had to sing a song ... she said I'd be a star!! I lost LOL
Walter Sabolta started there, later became Billy Mason... Made a few records I think and then I never heard of him again.

ALMOST EVERY WEEK NO LESS THAN A FEW OF US, WOULD MAKE THE TRIP TO VERDUN
FROM LA SALLE JUST TO TRY TO GET ON 'CALL ME UNCLE' SHOW I FOUND THAT
THE MORE FRIENDS YOU BROUGHT CAUSED THE METER TO RISE WHEN AFTER YOU WERE
FINISHED THEY WOULD APPLAUD FOR YOU AND YOU WOULD WIN......WELL WALTER I
THOUGHT HAD THE MOST FRIENDS THEIR, AS EVERY TIME I WAS ON, HE WOULD
WIN...BUT, LATER ON I FOUND OUT THAT I COULD REALLY SING AS EVERYONE WOULD
INVITE ME TO THEIR SING-SONG SHOWS. I ALMOST MADE IT TO THE BLUE SKY REVIEW,
WHICH WAS PROBABLY THE MOST POPULAR STAGE SING-SONG SHOW AROUND IN THE EARLY
FIFTIES. WE USED TO SING ON THE BUS AT THE BACK, & THE PASSENGERS WOULD
APPLAUD US WHEN WE WENT FROM LA SALLE TO VERDUN.....AHHH THOSE WERE THE
DAYS........I NEVER MADE IT INTO THE BIG TIME, ALTHOUGH ONE SUMMER IN THE
EARLY SIXTIES I TRAVELLED THROUGHOUT NORTHERN QUEBEC & NORTHERN ONTARIO WITH
A "ROCK N ROLL REVIEW, IT FIZZLED & MY CAREER DIED.....MY COUSIN WAYNE
BRAITHWAITE WHO IS ALSO CALLED MARK, WENT ON AS A DRUMMER & MADE A LIVING
OUT OF IT...... OH SUCH BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES.......I ALMOST FORGOT....THANKS
VC, FOR THE MEMORIES.....
