Who ho!  Second Avenue.  I was just starting to doze off here when I clicked on your post re Pope Benedict.  You know, I've always wondered why something that is supposed to be so good as religion can be the cause of so many wars?   Dolly

Dolly I have to partially agree with your comment. However on the positive side, who is going to feed the poor in Calcutta India, Africa, South America and elsewhere but for the church? Here in Hawaii a hundred years ago,  leprosy was an incurable and disfiguring disease. When no one would set foot on the leper colony, a Belgian missionary named Father Damian sacrificed his own health and future to administer to the lepers of Molakai, as did Mother Marianne Cope. Both are to canonized as saints. Religion does some good work I think.
No argument though Dolly.

The people in the pews are the religion     The people who the people look up to from the pews...they cause the wars.

I think if we keep this thought in mind, that there is ground of being common to us all, we will see the person behind his or her religion.  Hopefully, this will prevent us from becoming fanatics.   Jack

As I told our Bishop recently when he mentioned that one day we Anglicans might rejoin the Roman Catholic Church, we are not interested. All we wnt is to come in Sunday Morning and worship and go home. Why the upper brass feels the need to get political I don't know. I see that in the U.S. The I.R.S. is going after Churches whose leaders have spoken out against the Republicans platforms. Taking away the tax free benefit for those who spoke against the war.        Ed

Wasn't it written somewhere that the church and state should remain separate?    Dolly

Yes it is written that Church and State should remain separate. However, it seems that you can't appease either side.   Dianne

It is written in the American Constitution but is it also in the Canadian Charter? I understand that the balance of Government and Church is one of the things that makes Quebec "distinct".

are you yelling? was that sarcasm or your real opinion?

I watched George Bush addressing the U.N. assembly this morning. I saw the sneer on the faces of Lebanon and Palestine when he dressed them down for invading another country. How he has the nerve to talk about invading another, I don't know. Don't worry John ,as long as men like him are around there will always be wars. It suits their purpose financially. Dick Cheney's buddies are raking it in and saving Haliburton for him when he retires.    Ed

On another plane, There is and should be separation of Church and State but there also is such a thing as free speech. It's number one in the American constitution. If a man can't speak freely in Church, where can he feel free.   Ed

What is so great about free speech or separation between church and state? Israel is the only country in the mid east which has it.
