Ps: This site is monitored but not actively posting on a regular basis. Mostly these are stories & some photos saved from a defunct site known as Verdun Connections which was on MSN Groups initially then on a social network called Multiply.

The question I ask myself is how come the population of Verdun has dropped so drastically by 25,000 in a relatively short period of time as basically the same houses are there. The only explanation I guess is because the families are smaller. We where 9 in a 4-1/2 in the 40s, 2 adults and 7 kids, you don't see that anymore. Guy
Now you might find 2 or 3 many are single parents with a child or two. My daughter lives on Melrose and has 5 kids - she is doing her bit to bring up the average.

We were 11 as well, lived on the bottom flat. 1 child family in the middle and 8 children on the 3rd floor. Total of 18 kids in the 3 flats. Not really unusual at that time. We can blame birth control for the population decline of Verdun?
actually that is an amazing fact.....25000 less people in relatively the same space.
Maggie. I mentioned this before. In our 6 flats on 3rd Avenue, 833,835,837,839,841,and 843.
There were a total of 22 kids and (at times), 18 adults. That is a total of 40 people. No wonder the population was so high. Now most families have maybe 2 children. We know people have moved away, and that is one of the reasons for less population, but is not the only reason. I have read that Canada is tryingto increase the immigration of people from almost anywhere in the world. They want at least 1% immigration. So if the population of Canada is 35 million, the federal government wants 350,000 outside people coming in.That does not include new births. And of course we know that Quebec wants more people from French speaking countries to increase the percentage of french over english. Winston Allison
Yes it was great for fielding a quick baseball team,or hockey in the winter,.....and the communication system was good to btwn all the kids,...within a few minutes the word would be out,that we were having a game,and we would all meet somewhwere........hahahaha Rememer going to someones front door and asking if so & so could come out and play,....(especially if they had the ball,or bat..........hahahaha) and over on the rink in the winter,..the place would be absolutely packed,so forming a couple of teams was easy,..................and it was always more fun if the nets were still on the icerink,......instead of using two big hunks of ice,......... and Remember the familiar yell,.....by whoever had to be in nets first,........"Hey,No Lifters".....................at least this was common place when pickup teams were playing
For a time, a family by the name of Picard lived next door to us on LaSalle Blvd. I think we fought more than played with them but they had enough kids to make our family look small. 14 seems to be about right. Some were their own and some were foster kids. I remember the mom cleaning fish by the trunk of "our" tree in the back yard.

by netting them on the bottom of Clemenceau Street.I
use to also sell them for 5 cents each to the people
downstairs from me and to bystanders.

all three flats now..probably 2 or 3 only..church

could be that verdun population decrease is due to less influence the church has on us now..years ago , they wanted you have have million children and told their flock not all to use preventive measures.
true, today there all many more single parents which would cause a decline in birth rate..also, as i said earlier,less inflence the church has on us now.
During my visit yesterday to the SHGV, I found in the Guardian of Jan. 30th 1964 that Verdun's population was 87,258 (as of December 31st 1963). We got to discussing the subject and someone mentioned that the population peaked to about 90,000 at the end of the sixties. I will keep my eyes open for later figures. Allison says that part of the reason was people moving. However that is not the reason as the same houses were rented and Verdun has a full occupation. The reason is families now have no children or not more than 1 or 2. Although it is true that the church wanted us to have children but don't forget that they reflected the mentality of the people of the times. Guy
Your sure getting closer Guy,....I definetly Remember the sign on Lasalle Blvd.(when entering Verdun from Lasalle direction,and not far from Maison St Diziere,theold stone house),.......and the sign as you entered Verdun from CoteStPaul ,over the rainbow bridge,in the small park btwn 4th & 5th,....Both signs were a large white background with a big "Welcome to Verdun" population 90,000(?) the sign was framed in Verdun Green around it ,and green lattice as well .........I seem to think I saw the number approaching the 99+ at one point ,...but can't be certain: As for the reasons for decline in population,..all I've heard so far seem to make sense,....but one thing that isn't a constant,....is there are not the same amount of houses,...as Verdun opted to only allow rebuilding of 2 story house ,...after an event like a fire,.....Some were also converted from flats for multiple family's ,into 1 or 2 family homes on the inside,...... Verdun did have a lot of fires,..and that is what also led to the removal of most (if not all ) of the sheds as well: So there are many reasons for population decline,..but I would have to agree the far samller families has to be the major contributing factor,..... Mnay people also moved to the Chateguay area,...fronm Verdun, and of course to other areas as well: Good Luck ,...I hope you can find a picture of those old signs: I'm sure there must be one around the archives somewhere,..perhaps at a dedication ceremony or something???
It didn't matter what the population was; on a week day back then you could walk down the stret between 5 o'clock and six thirty alone. The streets were deserted as everyone would be in the houses eating supper together as a family. Ed

Interesting John, My Mother was Catholic, born in Dublin. How she hooked up with my Baptist Father is a mystery. My Mother did nopt like the Baptist Church because they have weekly Eucharist. My Father on the other hand said that the Catholic Church was run by the Pope. He said he didn't trust the Pope because he lived in Italy and Italy was full of foreigners so he didn't want us raised Catholic. My Mother convinced him that Anglicans were Protestant, so he agreed to send us to St.John The Divine on Moffat. Ed

were allowed to hang around with..Thank god those days
are gone...
