Verdun Smallfry Football
Hey dflood do you have any pictures of this league?
HAve quite a few but they were in my Dad's scrapbooks. They are all in my brother's care in Greenfield Park. I am in California... you see the problem. I played a bunch of years for the Tigers. History: VSFA Started by Bert Town in 1955-56. My dad took over about 1958 and ran it with help from my mom until leaving Verdun in 1966. He aded the "Termite division" 8-10 year olds in which many alumni of the league coached and/or referee'd. Heal helped keep the city bantam league afloat also. He was pretty burnt out by 65-66 from health issues but mostly the idiot fringe that criticized everything but never offered help or assistance. I'll try to get my brother to send me the books. There are some grreat pic and articles in them. PS The Stamps / Shamcats always were our major rival (except 1st year I played (1956)when they kicked ass) as I remember..
Sorry for the late reply.XP wouldn't let me reply. So I ran spybot and adaware Then exit XP and restarted in 98. My brother Dan played for Bert Town.onthe Stampeders. The next year your father took over. Do you Yahoo!?
Hey Flood, I remember your dad, Frank, I think his name was. Though I knew him as Mr. Flood. I remember going to his flat to pick up my first football uniform. I also remember him, I am sure it was him. He would take winning teams trophy around to each of the players houses so everyone on the team could have it for awhile to display on their mantle. Such a nice thing to do. He was a great guy. I played on the Shamcats for a short while.. After hearing that your dad started the small fry league, I wonder if his starting it had anything to do with some assistance from my dad. hehe My father had an issue that he may have brought to your dad's attention. I registered to play football and was put on the Shamcats. I was quite small and when I received my uniform I was litterally swimming in it. My father saw it was way to big for me and to prove a point tried it on himself. And it fit him, quite well I might ad. The first time I realized that football uniforms, at least the pants, were suppose to be tight fitting. hehe I recall he may have even gone to visit your dad dressed like that. Anyway it wasn't too long after that, I think the same season even, that the small fry league was started. I was releived to be with some kids my own age, & size and wearing a unniform that actually fit. Hehehe I ended up playing offensive end for the Cardinals. The only other team in that small fry league that first year were the Vikings. Unfortunately they won most of the games. Although I didnt stay with football very long, hockey was more my sport, from those small fry teams, many a boy came through the ranks and later played for the Black and Gold Bengals who took the Canadian championship somewhere in 1969 / 1970. They went to the Canadian finals two years in a row. Gawd Verdun was a great place to grow up with great people living there such as your dad. I would like to offer a sincere thank you to your dad for all his selfless service. By his efforts, so many boys were fortunate to be able to play football in Verdun. His name will always be remembered. His name was Frank, wasnt it? just kidding. Johnny O
johnny O Your kind words are well appreciated. I remember my dad climbing poles at the Stadiumto put up speakers to "broadcast" the kids game to make it more real for them and their parents.......and taking them down in the dark and sometimes in rain. He spent a lot of time and energy raising funds for "his kids". He was great at sqeezing chicken dinners and other merchandise to raffle to raise a few bucks. My mother was the chief raffle ticket seller and passed the collection box at many of the games. He was pretty dedicated to this and strict about keeping everything above board. You are right he got a lot of kids started down the straight and narrow. Sadly he passed away on Nov 29 2002 at 88 yrs. Tough old bird but certainy my hero for his honesty and dedication to "His Kids". I am sure he would have treasured your kid words. PS I coached the Termite Vikings for three or four years. Great fun to take 8-10 year ols from no football knowledge to enthusiastic participants. Have fond memories of those triumphs (not necessary the game winning kind). Dave Flood
