Since we lost our "Roving Reporter" who took a gazillion pictures of houses in Verdun dressed up for Christmas, the job is open.   Should you wish to accept this challenge, the duties are quite simple.....to take as many pretty pictures as you can find around the area.   Any takers???????   Cheers.

I see that "Silent Night, round John Virgin, Mother and child" made the top 50 list.    Right now the Santa Parade is getting ready to start up our main street, and low and behold, it's snowing ever so lightly.  Kind of neat for a place that doesn't usually get snow.  Now wetness, I understand, but snow?????   Cheers.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Okay folks,   Here we are a couple of hours later, and we're in the middle of a honking big snow storm (by our standards).  The snow is staying on the ground but I'm sure it will be gone by tomorrow AM.   Very good travelling weather for Santa and his entourage who just came to our town today.   Anyone else have snow, yet?   Cheers

SNOW?????   Holy Toledo, Bat Man what's that white stuff???????   Snow.....about 12 inches to be exact......and still coming down.  I feel bad for our little dog she doesn't want to go out, not even to do her little duty, so we had to shovel the snow away, right down to the grass before she would even consider going out!  Geez, this is worse than some of the storms we had back in Montreal.   And how's your little corner of the world?   Cheers.

Hi Linda.  I am visiting my daughter in Quesnel BC  and it's -34 today.  I haven't felt cold like this since I lived in Montreal twelve years ago.  Kelowna is so much milder, but I understand that this week it is going to be -20 which is very unusual.   I won't be returning back to Kelowna until the 9th of December, so I guess I just have to grin and bare it.    How are the roads there.  Do they have the equipment to clear them?    I must say,  I sure don't miss the cold winters from back East, but do miss the beautiful colored trees in the fall.  One thing we can count on here in the west is that we know it won't last.  I am sure the kids are out with their sleds grabbing the moment while they have it.  Have a great day.  Joyce

Linda. In Vancouver, Washington it is rain as usual. We are on a course to break an all time record for rainfall in the month of November. We have already broken a number of day records. We may be going to have snow tonight, or tomorrow morning. Down here they always say we are expecting snow down to 2000 feet, or 1000 feet, or 500 feet, or above 4000 feet etc.... They never say in the forecast that that it is going to snow. There is so many degrees of elevation in this area that when we get more than a sprinkling of that stuff, the school buses are either on snow routes, or the schools close.

Thanks for those familiar pictures of the Hummers......beautiful.  We usually have a few up here in these months, but our usual fliers are the eagles.  Lots of eagles.  I noticed today that they are hovering close to the tree tops and not venturing out as they usually do.  Smart buggers.   And Winston, take heart...look at it like liquid sunshine (with which we are very familiar) that has come in a different, fluffier package, hehehe.   After a brief windy period this afternoon, it has at least stopped sn%$#ing.  Kungfu I hope you're getting prepared for this weather, cause we don't want it, and we're sending it your way, lol.   Cheers.

Mom's right on with the length of the Island Winston,......   How big is Vancouver Island?
Vancouver Island boasts 3,440 kilometers (2,136 miles) of coastline encompassing 31,000 square kilometers (12,000 miles) of land. The Island stretches 460 kilometers (286 miles) from North to South and 50-80 kilometers (30-50 miles) West to East. The Golden Hinde is the highest mountain at 2195 m. (7201 ft.). The population of Vancouver Island is 746,000. About Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is internationally acclaimed for warm hospitality, exceptional natural beauty, and outstanding activities and attractions and has been awarded the Best Temperate Island in the World five times in the past nine years. For the second year in a row, readers of prestigious Conde Nast Traveler Magazine have selected Vancouver Island the Best Island in the North America and, this year, have name Victoria Best city in the Americas. It's just more evidence that Vancouver Island is a premier vacation destination with something that everyone needs a little Island time.   you could drive to Kingston from Montreal (or toronto),,,in less time than it takes to get from one end of this island to the other........it's a big rock Winston,.....so jump in a motorhome, and come on over for a visit: and here's a list of ways to get here: from the site where I got the above information  http://www.escapadeswest.com/ewst-faq's.php you maywant to wait out this little snowstorm though..........hahahaha Drive up to olympia Wa. ,then straight out to Port Angeles, hop on the Coho/Blackball ferry,.....and an hour and 20 minutes later your in Victoira,....then explore the island.....if you ski, there's also MtWashington(right near Linda(Mom45).......

During World War one, my grandmother went off to France as a nurse. She place my mother into service in England when she was 10. My mother never saw her mother again for 35 years. She did not know where her mother or the rest of the family was. It turns out that there were in Duncan B.C. Why my grandmother never came back for her daughter (my mother) we never knew, and did not ask my mother about. When I was 10, she and my brother Bumpy went out to visit Vancouver Island. She made several trips there. For some reason she never took me. Probably because it would have cost to much to take me. What a shame!!!!!  Anyways, I have never been to the Island. Talk about a small world my sister-in-law who lives down here, and is an american, lived in Campbell River for 10 years. That was a good 30 years ago. What a really small world.

Hi Arbutus, (Gary),.....I just drove through Broadmead (it looks great with the snow on the trees)  the roads are passable and if people drive with a little common sense, then they should have no problem,......(although I did see one fender bender,a 4x4 of course, both of them),.....the MtDouglas Parkway is closed from the Shelbourne entrance side ,I imagine there are trees down through the park,......but Blenkinsop is fine ,....Listening to the radio reports this am,this should be the end of our Winter and milder than normal temps are on their way....................Yahoo,..........hahahaha but first we have some sub-zero stuff to deal with ,..so shut off your outside water taps,.and hide those garden hoses (don't need those here anyway,in the winter.....unless your washing the car........) I saw some Icicles Hanging from some corners  of buildings, and it reminded me of being a kid in Verdun,....Remember the size of the Icicles, that would fall from some of the roof tops in Verdun.....some of them would come down like spears and stick in the snowbanks,..... There's always something to prompt an old memory bank.........hahahaha

Coldest day of the year so far in Edmonton.  -40C with the windshield factor.  That would be about -50F!  I guess we've been spoiled the last 3 winters.  Last year, people were golfing around this time.  No snow until mid January and really cold for 3 weeks then, it was gone.    So, this is a rude awakening but it is always sunny here!  You'd think with the sun out all the time that it would be warm.  It is cold for sure but the weather here changes so quickly, and cliche as it may sound, I really do prefer this cold snap with the sun always shining to the slushy, damp dirty grey cold in the east.  :-)   AND a white Christmas this year!  Yes!   Dolly

Your right about the bamboo stuff,....I thought they were done, the other day,but shook the snow off,and they were Ok again,.......   now Gary (Arbutus) that tree would surely have done some damage if it hit a house,....I did drive through Beaver Lake Park Rd yesterday,..from Elk Lk Drive,....through the park past Beaver Lake,.over to West Saanich Road,..and half way through there was a tree leaning over on some power lines, with one line on the roadway, and the tree being held up by the rest of the power lines,..all they had there was two little saw horses, and a STOP sign (portable type),...warning not to pass,.....but since I was more than halfway through,I did the dangerous & not so smart thing ,and drove under the tree,& over the powerline,......Dumb I agree,.but since the saw horses, & stop sign were there,I knew the power was off (or at least I figured that),.....and so I continued on,......made it without incident,.but I know I would have advised anyone else to turn around and go the other way........and the wieght of the tree could have come down anytime,as it was on about a 45 degree....... Jumping jehosafat....glad to be back in the land of the living.  We got hit with a violent windstorm yesterday with many power lines downed from falling trees. But while reading often I'll see something that I need to explore a little, but egads ~ no google.  While crocheting there might be a pattern that I want to change, but egads ~ no google to find a replacement stitch.  Maybe mosaicing, but need to explore the different glues or grout.  Anyway, frustrating none-the-less.   So although MSN is slower than molasses going uphill in winter, I'm just glad to be back 'on line'.   And, at our house, I'm the putter up and taker down of all things Christmas.   Glad to be back in the land of the living.   Cheers

Linda Linda Linda.  What is a poor girl to do. Stuck in a log cabin with no electricy, running water, or inside plumbing????? Snow all over, and you have to trudge out to the outhouse with your strips of old newspaper.  Woe is me!!!!! just kidding. I kanow what you went thru, and do have empathy for that situation. Welcome back!!!!! If we lose electricity here, we have nothing, no water either because we are on a well. So if we know there are going to be high winds, we fill the bathtub up. We also have bottled water for drinking, a firepace that doesn't heat all that well, sleeping bags, battery operated TV,(but then no satalite), and a gas grill for cooking, which also have a burner so we can heat up water to have some coffee. Anyways, as Les will recall a couple of years ago we were stuck in the house for 9 days because of the trees in the road. The bad part is
there is only one way out of here, so we were stuck. Yes Linda, there is a Santa Claus, and thank heavens he does not get stopped by high winds and the lose of electricty. Also, the winds came from Oregon, according to the news report. Damn Oregon winds!!!! Winston Allison

Linda. I live in Vancouver, Washington. We get very little snow. I live probably 350 miles south of you, straight down the I-5 freeway, and just south of Mt St Helens. We get snow here and the whole place falls apart. Schools close, and on every local TV station they have "The Storm Center" on. They have roving reporters, and newspeople stationed all over the place giving live reports and updates about how dangerous it is out there. But that is because they are not use to it.  So welcome back to paradise!!!!!! Where the grass is greener, but may be not as tasty!!!!!

For those of you who like Paul Reid and his Christmas Show,..... he's on every Subday throughout the month of December on CJAD, I Remember people talking about this show in the past,.so here you go,.get out your tape decks ,..or whatever,....and have a listen if you like: Home > radio shows
The Paul Reid Christmas Show

Enjoy the Paul Reid Christmas every Sunday from 6pm to 9pm throughout the month  of December. The Paul Reid is a timeless tradition on CJAD 800. The show revolves around Paul's memories of Christmas while growing up as one of sixteen children. He talks reverently of his Mother and Father and how they made Christmas so special even though they were poor. He talks about his favourite Christmas Carols and plays them all. While Paul was alive, in the true Christmas spirit, he gave the show to anyone who wished to broadcast it. As a result it played in a number of countries and on the Armed Forces Network. We were told it also played during the war in Vietnam. It is worth noting that he did most of show live every year. Some pieces were taped to give him a break. Some years he had trouble finding something new to add or he didn't feel the Christmas spirit.

The radio station staff and librarians would help. When Dad would go in to prepare for the show, he would find the studio darkened with only candles lit, a decorated Christmas tree in the corner and other decorations. There were usually messages from staff and most importantly his kids and family, wishing him a Merry Christmas. To him, Merry Christmas meant "I love You".

Hi Winston,   Mis-spelled words!!!!   Egads not what I was alluding to....   I think that our very own Les_F is inventing new words.  Not every day that someone comes up with a new word ~~ like Christmassy or Dispaly.  As a matter of fact, most of us here on VC can come up with new words.   The problem I have now is that my fingers type faster than my brain can think....I get these little brain farts....and you never know what's going to show up in the message.  Oops am I allowed to say that here?  Too bad, cause I just did.    Cheers.

Linda. Yup. I never use to check what I have typed, but more and more I am. I think we know what someone is trying to say even if our brains are not in cink(?) with our fingers. But you know something? At least we have the opportunity to make those corrections. When we use our mouths, some things do not come out right, and it is hard to correct that. Another thing. I am so glad that we can have fun and give each other a laugh, or a suggestive thought on here. It sure makes for a very interesting and fun day!!!!!

Sandy and Linda,   I also worked in the Sun Life Building.  I was with Sandy for a while on the 14th floor and I remember coming in that first day also and seeing the huge Christmas tree lit in the foyer.  It always took my breath away.    It was indeed a handy place to work in.  I had heard about the treasures and paintings stored in the basement and that made the building even more special.  I loved the marble and brass polished elevator doors.  That building was solid ---they just don't make them like that now.   I'd run across to PVM also and droll over all the clothes I could not afford in the Parisian boutiques.  I remember waiting for sales and once bought a gorgeous leather belt (I had a waistline then!), and there was a cafeteria there also that I would meet friends or have lunch.    I sewed all my clothes then and would check out Marshalls on St Catherine just above Peel and wait for the sales and buy expensive coutour fabric half price.  Usually after Christmas and July sales.  I wonder if Marshalls is still there.  It had 3 floors of all kinds of fabrics --- from bargain basement to haute couture/bridal on the top floor.  Does anyone know?

Sabby...I use to sew all my own clothes and my daughters clothes too, until they decided they wanted to look like all the other kids!!   I made my granddaughters dress for my younger daughter's wedding a couple of years ago and I just recently finished making lined drapes for my bedroom. I still do a lot of sewing, just not clothes for me any more..I wait for the sales now. I still knit all our sweaters, mitts, gloves etc. My next project is a quilt for the grandkids beds.   Dianne

Hi Dianne,   It must be the cold but come autumn my husband grows a beard and I get the knitting needles out.  I started a sweater last year but never finished.  There is something about wool over the knees on a cold day to keep warm and keep the fingers busy so one does not go to the fridge for snacks.   So this unfinished sweater is staring me in the face again and although I still need to keep the fingers busy so I don't snack, we have a fireplace now, so don't need wool on my knees to keep warm.  Maybe I'll finish it before spring.   I know a couple of girls at work who quilt and I just don't know how they have the patience!   Beautiful patterns I wish I had the time to pursue!

Hi Sabby!   I don't make the complicated quilts, just simple square blocks!   I like to knit afghans...I don't think that is how it is spelled...anyway, I can sit and knit and watch the boob tube and not drop a stitch...LOL!!!   I just finished 4 pair of mitts for the grandkids for Christmas. they love the real mitts...that's what they call them!!   Dianne

Sabby & Dianne,   Small world indeed.  My dad worked at Marshall's as a carpenter.  Many moon ago, when they remodeled the store my dad did all the work, and I mean everything.  I almost lived at G.K. Marshall's, as the owner's son was my dad's best friend and that's why he did this work for them.  This was his avocation, as his primary job was at CNR.  I also made nearly all of my own clothes in high school and when I first started to work.  I got just about any material I wanted for free, nada, zilch, nothing.  I used to spend most of my 'free' time wandering about the mezzanine where the wonderful expensive material was.  At Christmas I often got a bolt of lovely material from them as a gift.   It's been a very, very long time since I was in Montreal so not sure if the store is still there.  Thanks for bringing back those memories for me.

I knit, but it is crocheting that I love.  Haven't done any big projects lately since I had the surgery for carpal tunnel and don't have full use of the hand yet, but I crochet small stuff like lucky penny holders, angels, edging for table cloths, doilies, etc.   My Nan used to say that idle hands were the work of the devil.  I just say that keeping my hands busy keeps me out of the bingo parlours and off the streets, lol.   Cheers.

I find my self raising my hand to signify, that I haven't .............hahahaha Anyone else out there cruising down to the wire(come on there must be) but I have been informed that We (Teresa & I) are going out tonight for a few gifts, etc etc ..........(I don't like malls at the best of times),..but I like the final results..............a room full of Chritmas wrapping paper.......hahahaha

A woman's work is never done....you should know that Les_F.   The bad timing in my case is 3 birthdays...Nov 20 & 29 and Dec 30.  Sometimes I feel for them, ya know the "this is for your birthday and Christmas" excuse.  Seems like a never ending shopping spree for me at this time of year.   But......there's always room for another present or two, lol.  Good thing is that this year we're staying put, and the kidlet is coming over here.  Just hate those ferries.   Gotta get back to dusting, vacuuming and cleaning.  Gets done once a year whether it needs it or not.    Cheers to All........

Thanks Mom45,......I can now add another gift in 'need to get department' my son Chris will be 24 on Dec 27th,.................and I always make sure there's a separate birthday gift,...as Christmas somewhat overshadows birthdays at this time of the year..........hahahaha                             ...............Sounds like your neck of the woods ,warrants this picture.....hahahaha                 Merry Christmas

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you
____________________________________________________ I didn't recall, that it was Mel Torme (Velvet Fog),that wrote/co-wrote ? this old Christmas Song(usually it's Nat King Cole, whose version is most heard this time of year.....However I always like the last verse best: "and so I'm offering this simple phrase. To Kids from One to Ninety-Two. Although it's been said, many times, many ways, A very Merry Christmas to you now it will be stuck in your heads all day,I heard it this morning hahahahahahah

Hi Winston,   Only one of those birthday's was my fault......November 20, 1970.....my girl kidlet!!!!!   The other two were my mother's fault....my sister & brother.   Not sure about anybody else, but the news that one of our "own" died last week really hit me hard.  So if you have someone close to you, please hug them and tell them you love them.   On a brighter note.....I'm not dreaming of a White Christmas anymore.  Instead, I'm dreaming of .....the Green, Green, Grass of Home.   Take care all,

I sometimes compare the revelries of yore with those of today. I find the holidays much quieter since I no longer inebria I mean celebrate the way I used to. Which brings up the question, "Was it me making all the noise?" I don't remember since many a year has passed since I rolled home New Year's eve singing 'Auld Sang Lyne' and 'Randolph the rude nose red deer'.              Ed

Linda. I don't think you are alone. It knocked the wind out of my sails. We never know from one day to the next what will happen to us, or the ones we love. We need to let them know we love and care about them. I for one love this site, and everyone on here. We have such a bunch of good people on VC. When we lose one, I feel a certain void, that is hard to fill. Winston Allison

Linda / Winnie,   You speak of us having lost someone. Sorry if I missed the passing of one of our gang it must have slipped by me. I lost a friend and work buddy this past week and it always makes one stop and think about ones own mortality.   Gary Saanich, BC

Sorry Gary. Yes we lost Ruth Armstrong. She passed away on December 15th. I guess it bothered me more than I thought. I guess it bothered me so much, I got her mixed up with someone else. I need a vacation I think. Either that or old timers medicine. Maybe both.

Linda/Winnie,   I was surprised and sorry to hear about Ruth's passing especially at this time of year.  I never knew her except through VC.  She e-mailed me personally in October to say that she was coming to Edmonton at Christmas to visit her mother and asked me if I knew of any restaurants here who served Smoked Meat.  She wanted to take her mother for smoked meat for her birthday.    It always amazes me how we stop in our tracks when someone we know dies and it is only then that we are reminded how short life is and how important it is to be kind to one another.  We are stunned for a time, and then we continue in our usual manner until we hear of someone else passing and the cycle repeats itself.   I find as I've gotten older, I've become more and more aware of my own mortality.  I figure I have maybe 10-15 years left if I'm lucky, so what do I want to do with those years?  I don't want to sound maudlant, but sometimes, yeah, we need to stop and evaluate our lives and interactions with people and it shouldn't take someone's passing to do that.  Do it every day..  Live well.  Be kind.

Winnie,   Sorry to hear about Ruth. I too only knew her from the VC group and in fact sent her a message not so long ago to inquire about her brother Arthur whom she was to visit in Edmonton during the holidays.  I'm almost certain I went to school with him at VHS. He had retired from the RCAF. She never got around to answering that posting. I believe it was to be a family Xmas get together. Was Ruth still living in Montreal? She will be missed. "R.I.P."   Gary Saanich, BC

Gary. I only knew her thru VC also. I had her confused with someone else. I think I was confused because she mentioned her brother Arthur. I thought she live on 3rd Avenue at one time, but it was someone else. But, she was living in Florida. She had lived in the States for many years. Winston Allison

Les,  You better go today and spend the extra Bucks $$$. Because you never know about tomorrow. I do all my shopping online. It can be a pain in the butt but alot of the time you get better prices than in the store. Danny

Well I am starting to get into the mood to go shopping, probably tomorrow , might venture to local Mall this p m , just to have a look . hang tough Jimmy

Les. The thing about waiting to the last minute to get your Christmas shopping done, is that you really don't have to decide what to buy. You have no choice. You have to get something, and you get what you can. You can say I wanted to get you this or that, but I couldn't find it!!!! I sure am disappointed not being able to get...whatever, so I got you this....."You can always take it back if you don't like it"!!!   Of course they usually say,"Oh no honey, I really like it". Ya right!!!! Years later, they bring it up, about how you always wait till the last minute, and they have to get "stuck" with whatever.  Anyways. I always say you are safe with cookware....pots and pans. They never have enough of those. Ya tha's it. I now know what to get. Okay, I have to go last minute shopping. Maybe I will throw in so dishes and silver ware, and maybe some silver polish to keep
those knives and forks and spoons shiny.    JUST JOKING LADIES!!!!! Gifts certificates, that's the way to go. Winston Allison

That's true Winston,.........I might try that.........hahahaha I'm usually pretty good about making the selection,..but I just am slow to get motivated this year,......   and DannyB ,you have a good thought there too,...no driving,no crowds, I wonder if I can get away with telling them ,that I'm really into the True Meaning of Christmas,.....and get them nothing,..but tell them that I love them all ,and think of them all year......................... ..........I better go to the MAll..................hahahahahaha   Reminds me of the Guy ,who asks his wife ,what she really wants for Christmas,.........she answered That what she really wanted ,was a Divorce: He answered that "He Wasn't Planning on Spending that Much".......hahah

Jimmy. Now your talking. Maybe skip over to the old mall to get you into some spirits....oops The spirit....AWE, what the heck, have a few before you actually start shopping, things won't look so bad then. Don't tire yourself out thought. Think about the pots and pans???? They are sure winners!!!!! Winston Allison
