No problem Les. Steve
Now you may not recognise the bridge going into place ( it's the Acky BTW) but checkout the old Sherwin Williams Paint Joint in the background,.Remember the 'Over the World' sign the big paint can spilling over the globe....................... that building is all Condos Now (must be real healthy living in a building that used more chemicals than Ken Keasey hahahahahhahah have fun and remember Verdun
Wanna guess where or what this may be,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, looking at it from the downstream look........................................................HF&RV
Les, RE MESSAGE 419: What Acky bridge is this? Re Sherwin Williams Globe, it was situated above Atwater between Centre and St Patrick. Only the old timers would remeber this as it was removed in the late 50s I guess. I remember it quite well and maybe you can come up with a picture. We coud'nt miss it waiting for the boats to go by so that the Atwater bridge could be open again. Guy
Hello Guy the Globe ,with the paint spilling on to it & the caption "We cover the World" ( or something like that . was still on the building in the later 60's, as I would take the bus from Verdun & get off at the stop just before the Atwater Tunnel, and walk through a parking lot ,that ran parallel with the railway tracks ,so I saw this Sherwin Williams sign quite often.I can recall thinking when it was finally taken down, that ,it was too bad,& thought it was like losing some sort of landmark.............hahahahaha I know it's just a sign, but it's funny how we hate to lose 'familiar' things,......sort of like the Five Roses Flour Sign (Ogilvy's,RobinHood ,Five Roses Farine),or any other signs that we knew at one time. As for the name of the bridge , I think it was referred to as Pont Bailey, or something like that, I was surprised to hear that too,.but I will look up the website again & see just what it was called & what year the photo was taken. I'm not sure if I'll find it very quickly as I was looking randomly for Verdun ? Montreal stuff, and came across all these photos ,that have been posted lately,..sort of like finding a treasure chest ( LoL) Although I tried to link the photo's directly from the site, they just did the disappearing act,and left that little white box with red x ,.....so I had to save them to my hard drive then post them from my own storage,so it's eating up some of my allotted storage from MSN,.and consequently soon I will have to delete ,so as to add more, that's why I suggest for everyone to save them ,and share them with others,....you never know when we won't have access to them,........ Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Guy ,I sent you an email & it looks like the direct links ,do bring you directly to the photos and the info does ,indicate the bridge is reffered to as Pont Bailly,.............. Hope that helps: HF&RV
Bet, a few of you may have been in this place .......................... have fun & remember Verdun
or perhaps , this place also....... hv&rv

I'm not sure if you will be able to read the advertising billboard in the background ,but one of them reads "Sick Cars Made Well" an ad for MidTown Motor Sales, the other sign on the side street wall, is for : "Red Indian" Aviation Motor Oil,................ I can't say I really recall Red Indian Motor Oil,......but I do Remember MidTown of course........... With all the streetcar tracks I suppose this shot would have qualified for the More Trams thread too.................certainly a simpler time ,it looks like: ...Have Fun & Remember Verdun...
A very busy Saint Catherine street crowd, walking just in front of Krege's5-10 apparently near Christmas time 1938 .........Montrealers really got used to using the public transportation,.and I believe Montreal still has the largest per capita ridership of Public Transport in North America to this day................ HF&RV
Did you know, that Montreal also had it's very own 'Macy's' this one not quite as grand or well known as the one in NYC .....Told Ya,.........hahahahahaha HF&RV
It always seems that no matter when in time,.the City of Montreal always had men working on the streets,......There was always a truck or road crew around somewhere,........here's a pile of men working on the streets at the corner of Bleury ( or so it says)............. That's a lot of concrete piled up there and I don't see any jack hammers,.. .that's work................... ....I stand corrected, there does seem to be one fellow using what appears to be a jack hammer,........look at the size of the air hose connected to it,when you can see it from this distance ,it must have been a 2-3inch diameter?? Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Ok last shot for a little while ( I promise..LoL) Here's the corner of Plessis & StCatherine ,.....an old store on the corner, but look at the one beside it,......it's another 5-10-15 magasine Variety We sure had a lot of .5-.10 & .15 cent stores ,............I suppose they were like the modern day Dollar Stores we see every where today: ............................................................................................HF&RV

Les Man an old shot of the PVM Thanks Lad
Les That shot of the car...shows Mopar (Dodge) in the corner right..going to say around 70 or 71..I can see in far corner a spoiler of a SuperBird I think..they go for a small fortune to-day in auctions..and in front right looks like a Coronet or Super Bee..and over to the left I learned to drive on a Chrysler Fury 3 it looks like the big one by the curtains hanging down..man the gas now would be unreal to fill that thing.. Les if you find that program that would be good..hope you do.. I knew a guy who put his car in the custom car show..he owned a speed shop on Monk.We would get in free by being his team...good times.. Montreal was always big on open air markets,......which was the forerunner to the big chain stores & big box stores of today......we always had several markets where fresh fruit & vegies was available to us.of course Atwatyer usually springs to mind first,.but there were a few others as well, these shots are from a recognizable street in Old Montreal.............. .........................................................................havefunandrememberVerdun

Les let me ask you an unusual question regarding the city of Montreal past and present. Where in the city is the Italian mob concentrated. Is it down the east end, and if so which section and/or streets? My dad told me some were in Goose Village when he lived there in the 20s and 30s, but surely there must be a Little Italy.

Hi Les, It wasn't me who remembered Dagwood's. I wish I had though. My memory says that Dagwood's could be see on the way to Cartierville. It was on Cote Vertu just where the Cartierville 17 streetcar turned for the run to Cartierville. The Cartierville 17 streetcar was on a private right of way when it turned off Decarie on to Cote Vertu and remained on private right of way all the way to Cartierville. If the photo showed us more picture on the right side I believe we could see the number 17 streetcar line. I think my Uncle Phil took to to Dagwood's a couple of times but I'm not 100% certain. My uncle had a cottage at St Donat and a memory comes to me that he liked to stop at Dagwood's on the drive to St Donat. I e mailed a childhood friend in Montreal today. He remember Dagwood's as being on Decarie. He also told me that Dagwood's now makes sandwiches which are great. Better that Quizno's, Subway and Blimpies he says. Thanks for bringing the Dagwood's memory back. I think I asked the question a couple of years ago if anyone remembered "Blimpy's" the British Hamburger chain in Montreal. I loved their burgers. Mikes Submarine Sandwiches were great also-Fresco

Les,
Message 513-Love this pic. No matter what you say about Kik-Cola it certainly was delicious. I also see Pepsi-Cola, 7up and Bovril signs. My grandmother used to buy a lot of Bovril for making beef broth. I preferred Kik and Pepsi-Fresco
Les,
You have posted a classic photo in message 512. This is Snowden Junction before it was re-constructed in 1949. My friends and I would often go in to that Nuway Tobacco Shop when we were going to see a movie at The Snowden Theater. Snowden Junction looks like a hub of activity before it was replaced by Garland Terminal-Fresco
"Au Bon Marche" 625 St Catherine Street East........ I can't say I've ever been in here, but the name sounds familiar maybe from radio ads????? hf&rv
A little more Snowdon stuff,..here's a display of electrical appliances from Snowdon Electrical..and man does that stuff just scream 1950's............................... What is an 'ironer basket' ........it says that on the sign?? I get a laugh out of the old 'cartoonish' drawings of Women (the 1950's sterotype housewife...Apron & all)....hahahaha hf&rv
Aside from the famous to us ,Atwater Market ,and Bonsecours of ccourse there was also the Lachine market,...but the other bigone was actually Jean Talon Market, here's a few shots of a Montreal Spot............ certainly a very busy spot as well: hf&rv
Not very difficult to know this spot in Montreal........especially the bottom photo ,sort of gives it away a bit......... .That bottom shot ,wouldn't be a bad desktop photo, for a while anyway.................... have fun and remember verdun
I know a couple of you ,will readily appreciate this place & at least recognise it from your days way back when......(but I wouldn't put much 'stock' in it) HF&RV
Could the big picture with Queen Mary Provisions sign be Decarie and Queen Mary? The Tram being on Decarie in front of the British Consul sign? Where is the next one take with all the people at the bus stop?
Is this Jean Talon Market? It still exists although it's changed.
Queen Mary Provisions is on the south side of Queen Mary Road just west from the corner of Decarie and Queen Mary Road. The bank is on the southwest corner of Queen Mary and Decarie.
I think it's the Jean Talon Market but I'm not completely certain.
Les,
The Back River Boat Ride was the only ride I never went on at Belmont Park. Too expensive. I wish now I had dug deep and taken the boat ride-Fresco
Thanks Fresco. What happened to the pic of Decarie and Queen Mary?
Hi tartanmary,.......are you meaning this shot: I posted a rather large one & this one in the same post,...and I just checked tey are both still there,.sometimes it may be slow to load, but it is there: Have Fun & Remember Verdun it message #512 in this thread. Here's the Huge big picture too!! YIKES!!!! hahahahah
Hi Fresco,.......too bad 'you missed the boat' .......... I've never been one to be taken 'for a ride',.but I did on that one,...hahahaha but it was like .50 cents or something.......always felt nice and cool ,.a real escape from the Heat of the Park,.............. I think I have a picture of myself & an old girlfriend getting off the boat ride......I'll have to dig around a bit,.....Imagine all the stuff we would have today, if we had computers back in those days........Wow , HF&RV
What is it that fascinates us so much about streetcars. Here we are with a total of 532 messages and still counting. They certainly had a impact on our psyche as they have disapeared from our roads 50 years ago and we are still talking about them. Hurry, get those streetcars back before we get a nervous breakdown. Guy
Hello Guy,.oddly enough this thread of 533 & counting is actually titled "Montreal Spots" and a few of them have contained streetcars/bus's (usually from Montreal area) and the other Thread is titled "More Trams" which was an offshoot of one of our other threads I guess..... but your right ,the interest seems to be ongoing, I'm sure not for everyone, but any form of transportation was a big deal in the particular years we grew up,.seeing & riding on a train was a neat thing ,..going to say Belmont Park on a streetcar & later by Bus,.was an adventure that many still recall,..and as we have experienced many passing things, the 'memory' is what is Nostalgic..and these are just a few of the many Memory's of Verdun/Montreal/ LaBelle Province...have in all of our memory banks.Maybe we just feel closer to the big city of Montreal & all that it shared while we lived there: It's also been interesting to find out some things we didn't know about our home: all the threads on this site usually contain a lot of interesting things about People ,Places & Things ,we found so familiar as kids. and as always We can Have Fun & Remember Verdun...................So many things to relive in our minds have sprung up on the site, quite a neat deal, when Verdun Stuff is shared, and we are probably trying to stave off, memory loss,by doing these mental exercises......hahahahah It's all history my friend,it's all history... hf&rv
Good One Les and You are right, I did miss the boat-Fresco
Guy,
For me it's the memories of riding the streetcars downtown and the enjoyable ride they gave. The fascination of watching them. Seeing the blue sparks from the trolley poles on the wire at night time. I can't wait for the streetcars to return any longer. I'm checking myself in to The Douglas tonight-Fresco
Mary,
It's in Montreal Spots Message # 512 and Les has been kind enough to post in again for you so you can find it also at message 531 of Montreal Spots. It is an amazing picture. I remember being at this location many times but one day I was there with my aunt and cousin when I was about six years old. My aunt bought us gum at the Nuway Tobacco Store. My cousin swallowed his gum and my aunt was in tears thinking this was going to be a major problem. My cousin was fine and had no problem from the gum mishap-Fresco
Les F. That is me on the extreme left of the first picture. Going bald, and with my head down. WOW.... Those were the days!!!!! Thanks for that one.... Winston Allison
Hello Winston,.that is pretty cool......I just came across those shots the other day,....... glad it brought back some memories for you...... Cheers!! HV&RV I will be sure to post some more photo's of the exchange ,should I find more......
Les. Please do post some more if you can find any. My family would like to see them almost as much as me. Thanks a million for those!!!!!!!
Yes, that's the one Les. Thanks so much for reposting. I don't know why I couldn't find the other one yesterday. I love all these old photos. Where are the ones taken of all the cars on the bridge and the shots of cars leaving town? Great photos. Thanks so much for sharing them Les. Funny story about the gum Fresco.
How about this Montreal Spot,.has it been torn down yet? If not ,what is the time frame for the end of the interchange,...? You can tell ,these shots are early in it's existence, because it only took one Montreal Winter ,to 'highlite' the faux-pax in it's designe,.Remember those fleurescent lights that lined the elevated highways,...and they got covered with slush & snow from the snowplows,.so they installed normal light standards(poles) .and took out the 'Modern Lights' that looked good (when you could see them...........This photo shows no light poles..... ..................I've got a few more & will post them ,later or tomorow,......We're getting ready to go to a Canada Day BBQ. So Have Fun & Remember Verdun,..............Cheers!!!!
Many of you should recognise this Montreal Spot,.some of you from both sides of the front door..........hahahahah .........I suppose many of these spots have been since vacated ??? HF&RV

Sorry about that messy post Guy, but this 'F*&^%g MSN is getting very annoying..............................................YIKES!!!!! the year looks like Conrad Poirier took the photo in 1940,(but we cannot rely on info from these museums they seem to have a very high mistake rate, Apparently the Swastika used to be a 'good luck' charm.........and there is or was a town called Swastika Ontario, near Kirkland Lake....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_use_of_the_Swastika_in_the_early_20th_century ................................................................................................................HF&RV
I imagine this Montreal Spot has been demolished completely by now & condos in it's place ?? Imagin also the throngs of people who walked past here ( or drove) either heade through the old Wellington Tunnel or straight up Bridge street to the Victoria Bridge , or even the thousands who walked by her on ther way to the Gates for Expo67............................................A while ago .........HF&RV
Les Far as I know that place is still standing...not in the best shape...behind it they seem to be using the yard as a container yard..last time I saw it was coming out of Central Station over a year ago and it was still there. As for the other thing we talked about still waiting for a reply.. Thanks Lad
Thanks lad: ........appreciate the update..........for some reason i thought there was some hapennings at that Bridge st site,in the way of development, but maybe not I guess. Keep me informed ....................talk to you later .............HF&RV
Lad, I guess the 58 Wellington Streetcar passed in front of this building everyday and probably went to Place D'armes. Am I right ? Probably JM has the answer as he is our expert on the subject. Guy
In the name of research, can anyone tell me if the 58 Wellington bus went to ATwater.
The short answer is no the #58 Wellington did not go even close to Atwater.....................Verdun ( from Atawater ) was generally serviced by the # 7 & the #8 ,..both of wich later became the #107 & the #108...........................the #107 & the # 108 came down Atwater from the Forum (or Terminus park) & came through Verdun along Verdun Avenue (the #7 later #107) and the (#8 later #108) along Bannatyne............HF&RV
In my day (the 50's) the #58 streetcar started its run on Wellington (around Woodland) - east along Wellington through The Point - through the tunnel - up Colbourne - along Notre Dame To Place D'arms during business hours and return - or up to Peel & St. Catherine and return after business hours.
Hi MattMULLALY That's pretty much how I remember it too, and your right there was a 2nd option after hours,I had forgotten about that . Thanks for the memory prompt. Here's an oldie ,we've posted before, but the topic warrants another look at the old streetcar #58 making the turn at Woodland have fun & remember Verdun
Les, What is your source of the photo of the no. 58 Wellington tramway and the year. Also, the Woodland restaurant would be right behind the tramway. Guy
Thanks for the info on where the 58 went. Means I have to change something....sigh!
Hello Guy, the source is the " Centre Culturel de Verdun" it is linked through Musee Virtuel Canada http://www.museevirtuel.ca/pm.php?id=record_detail&fl=0&lg=Francais&ex=141 Guy look under 'Vignettes' there will be 118 photo's available to you,.as well as History etc etc .........I check the site fairly often to see if there are any new photo's or story's but it really hasn't changed in many years.........You will no doubt recognise many of the photo's available as many of them have been posted over the years............. Enjoy the site Guy, I'm sure you will. HF&RV
Hey Les If my memory serves me correctly the change occured at 7:00 PM during the week and on the week-ends. Reason being the business section (economics)of Montreal was pretty well closed down after 7:00 PM and not opened on the week-end. George
With all the disappearing buildings & highways, Montreal / Verdun will look rather bare to many of us ,should we visit there again.... Remember this old CKVL building ,.it did have some character, the marquis & vertical sign & clock were rather impressive ..... ................Guy took some pictures of the vaccant lot,a few months back, it did look strange to not see the old familiar CKVL building......ahh progress. hf&rv
Les, Remember the great theater CKVL had inside their building that was used for the Call Me Uncle Show. I loved CKVL's Request & Dedication Show that ran overnight on Friday and Saturday. Sid Ross was the host. They don't make radio stations like CKVL these days-Fresco

Here's something about a fire at CKVL in 1965, I do not remember this at all,.and I lived right next to CKVL , I could see it from my back gallery.but I don't recall this event... In 1965, just over a week after a disasterous fire, CKVL Verdun, Quebec, had a new RCA 50,000 watt transmitter in place. On August 29th, a lightning strike hit the transmitter building, causing a fire that almost completely destroyed the transmission equipment. But the shell of the building was intact, and the station was back on the air within hours. A 10,000 watt transmitter was fully operational on September 1 at 5:00 a.m. At the time, the station was licensed for 50,000 watts day and 10,000 watts at night, on 850 KHz. Jack Tietolman founded CKVL-AM in 1946 and CKVL-FM in 1947. Initially simulcast, CKVL-FM began separate programming in 1962, with 307,000 watts on 96.9 MHz. CKVL-AM remained bilingual until 1976, when it became French-only. That same year, CKVL-FM became CKOI.

a few old shots of the Girouard area,.perhaps the tracks will be reconisable for you Fresco ??? albeit a few years ahead of either of our times.......
This photo, taken at the beginning of the century, shows D챕carie Boulevard, looking north, from Queen Mary Road. We can see the Montreal Park and Island Tramline coming from Cartierville. The little building on the left bears a Snowdon sign that probably was a tram stop. The centre sign reads : 짬These valuable lots for sale, Beaudry Realty Co 쨩. The Beaudry family established itself in the area in 1666 with the arrival of Toussaint Beaudry. (Photo Fraser-Hickson Library) HF&RV
This view of Girouard Avenue looking south, shows another tramline car. It ran down Girouard along Sherbrooke and into Westmount. When it was extended west along Sherbrooke in the 1910's, another axis for urban development was created between Girouard and Wilson.( Photo Fraser-Hickson Library)

The GazettePublished: Tuesday, October 07 For 60 years, Belmont Park was Montreal's answer to Coney Island- an amusement park with a carousel and a wooden rollercoaster, on the banks of the Rivi챔re des Prairies.
25 years ago, it closed for good. Do you remember Belmont Park? What are your memories of that time? What were your impressions of the park? Same Belmont Park Story pg 2 of todays Gazette: cont'd from previous post: Proulx was born in 1977 and never had the chance to see the place himself. "It is most strange," he confided. "Even though I never went there, after doing all the research for the book and having all the facts and details, down to a map of the site, engraved on my mind, I feel like I was there many times." Those of us who were there, however, will never forget it. "I was a Gazette newspaper boy in Montreal in 1957," Toronto writer Bob Carswell told me. "As a youngster, my earnings from that job often financed my trips to Belmont Park, though I am guessing my first visit there was in 1949 with my parents. I also worked there one summer as the kid who set up the two Coke bottles that people threw baseballs at in order to win a prize. I remember the laughing fat lady near the entrance and, for the older crowds, the dance hall at the far end, right next to the river. "But," Carswell stressed, "do not forget ... the No. 17 streetcar ride from Garland Station, where it met the 48 to Montreal West and the 65 going downtown. It was the trip untold numbers of people took to Belmont Park." Paul Pappas, 78, also enjoyed Belmont Park a lot, so much so that in the 1980s, the established Montreal restaurateur went from running the park's food concessions and parking lot to buying Belmont Park with partners Bill Capstick, Ron Cotton and Spiro Gavaris. Its previous ownership group was led by Jacques Gauvreau (son of J. Romeo Gauvreau, who purchased the park in 1929 from its four founding partners). Charles-Émile Trudeau, lawyer, wealthy entrepreneur and father of future prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, had also been a minority partner prior to his death in 1935. His son actually sat on the board for a time in the 1960s. "I initially got involved because they needed someone with experience to run the concessions," the generous and gentlemanly Pappas said over lunch recently. "Then, since I already had over $100,000 of equipment, like popcorn and candy floss machines worth nothing on the street, I figured it made sense to become an owner." Pappas's group rented the park in 1980 then bought it in February 1981. As owner of Premier Concerts with Roy Cooper, Pappas was also one half of a leading impresario team of the time, bringing the top American jazz, blues and Broadway entertainers to Montreal, and he recognized the value of bringing talent to Belmont Park to perform at an outdoor auditorium by the river. He booked such artists as Martha Reeves and the Vandallas, Pierre Lalonde, René and Nathalie Simard, Michel Louvain, Renée Martel, Myriam, and clowns Nestor and Patof - as well as a very young Céline Dion pg 3 cont'd in next post: hf&rv
fianlly pg 3 Belmont park story todays Gazette Unfortunately, Pappas couldn't stem the park's decline, which had begun the year before his group took over. In August 1979, a seat on the ride Parachute Paratrooper broke loose and fell eight metres to the ground, seriously injuring two children and striking a blow to the park's safety record. In fact, a recall notice from this particular ride's manufacturer never arrived, Pappas recalled. Then, about a week later, a double whammy: Quebec provincial police officers raided the park and shut down seven of its games of chance (15 were also shut down following a raid at La Ronde), asserting that illegal gambling was taking place. Pappas and his partners sued the city of Montreal and won "settling for $115,000 in damages. ... but the negative publicity really hurt us." The park, which had averaged more than 500,000 visitors annually during its later period, suffered a major lag in attendance. The damage was done. Belmont Park's 1983 season would be its last, the owners' $1.8 million investment down the drain, and my favourite rides and the Laughing Lady merely memories. Actually, the "grosse femme" suffered the unkindest end of all, Pappas revealed. Kept in an employee's garage for years, she was unceremoniously chucked out after the garage was flooded. No laughing matter, to be sure. hope you had fun down memory lane have fune & rememberVerdun

Seems Halle Berry has a nice view of Montreal, & she likes the lAurentians.. The Laurentians Just Got a Little More Beautiful Tue, 2008-10-21 15:18. Kathy Coulombe The Laurentians community of Saint-Hippolyte is all atwitter with news that Hollywood beauty Halle Berry is making a home there. Esquire magazine's "sexiest woman alive" spent a reported 1.6 million dollars on a 63-acre estate on a private lake. So, what's the attraction?
Mayor Gilles Rousseau boasts Saint-Hippolyte is one of the most beautiful towns in the Laurentians with more than 62 lakes, as well as mountains, cross-country ski-trails and lots of activities. Halle Berry's new home has a view on Lake l'Achigan the biggest lake in the Montreal area and on a clear night she should be able to see the lights of Montreal ...................................................$1.6 for 63acres & your own lake,...pretty cheap actually.............hope she likes to skate, cause she won't be able to see the lake in a couple of months,.......Sounds like a nice addition to the area. Halle Berry married a french canadian (Quebecer) artist/musician who's name I can't remember so that would explain her interest in this area. Guy
Hi Guy I heard he was a restaurant guy or something like that.& he knocked her up.......( why any of us could have done that........hahahahhaah Just didn't get the chance) Berry, 41, and her boyfriend, 32-year-old model Gabriel Aubry, met shooting a Versace ad in Los Angeles in November 2005 and first stepped out publicly three months later at the February opening of a Versace boutique in New York City.
I think he's a 'model' turned restauranter ( I wonder where he got the dough to do that).......hahahahha but i haven't heard he's an artist / musician ,.......is that correct info ??...........BTW: It's Halle's 3rd marriage. I believe they, old Gaby & Halle met while doing a Versace commercial in LA...... and he then had a restaurant in NYC....... but he is from Quebec...so 1 out of a bunch isn't bad...........hahahahhaha but the good news is he's still doing Halle........not a bad job if you can get it:.........hahahah
Here they are as shown in this La Presse article this morning, Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry. They bought a 1.6 million dollar home in Saint-Hyppolyte in the Laurentians. You are right Les, he is a model not a musician as I mentioned previously. Guy
