Does anyone remember the Pentecostal Church in Verdun. I was not a member but I would go along with my friend to the meetings. They did alot of stuff for kids.
There were cookouts for the youth at Angrignon Park. They would have organized games, BBQ, and of course some good old time religion.
Happy Memories. Laurie

There was either a Gospel or Pentacostal group that had a 'summer school' during the summer vacation and it was held in a hall on Monk Blvd. They had all kinds of activities for children...colouring, pasting, puzzles, sing-songs, dancing, story-telling, etc. I was about 7/8 or so, and went with my girlfriend every day. I loved it, and my mom thought it was okay until I brought some of the pictures that I had coloured home. Mom had a fit....they were religious pictures and I had even learned songs that went with them. Needless to say, I never got to go back, but it sure was a lot of fun. At that age it never dawned on me that this was a sunday school type of happening. I still think of it today, and how I was upset that I couldn't continue to attend.
Linda - that wouldn't have been a Baptist Church on Monk Boul. would it. My mother helped out in a summer school program for the kids in early 1950 then our family switched over to St Aidans. Laurie
Laurie and Linda..my mother went to St.Aidans....but I was brought up Catholic because my dad was Catholic.....maybe that explains why I'm the way I am???? Linda...did you get my email? dianne
Laurie & Di..... You're probably right....could have been the Baptists. Who knows, but it sure was a lot of fun. Yes I did, and replied to it. Guess you didn't get it. Will resend. Thanks.
Laurie I went to Verdun Penecostal Church with my friend I think it was on Gordon near Wellington. I know it was a long walk from Melrose & Bannantyne. I loved to go on Fri. nights with her. They always gave us hot choc. after the meeting. They called everyone Brother or Sister. I can't remember what the Pastor's name was but his daughter's name was Hope and she went to VHS. Glo
Gordon & Wellington ??? If this is the right one ,then I lived in the middle of the next block over between Gordon & Galt on the same side,.which would have been the S side,......and so the church would be SW corner of the Gordon & Wellington intersection,...... To my knowledge ,.or at least I do not Rememeber a church on the SW corner of Desmarchais & Wellington,...right on that corner was a gymnasium,.( sort of a Health Studio,.Weifght Lifter Club,.with a Huge Sign outside of a weightlifter, and I think they had a picture in the windoow of George Reeves ( who played superman) ,I think he worked out there ot they got his signed picture or something like that,.......
Les, those are great pictures of St. Clement's Anglican Church (corner of Gordon & Wellington). I don't recall that any of the remaining 3 corners had a church on them.
Les I don't think that is it. It seems it was smaller. It was on the side street, I am almost sure it was Gordon, I know we walked up from Verdun Ave. towards Wellington. There was a Baptist Church on the other corner right on Verdun. It is so long ago. One day a few years back my brother who has lived in Ont. since the early 70ies. & I took a walk from Allard along Verdun Ave. to Labelle BBQ. and we were remembering all the stores and people and places. it was fun. We came back by Church Ave. and along Bannantyne. We only met one person that we knew from the past. It was a great day. Glo
They didn't Maggie the other corners were as follows. NW corner was 'Cote's ' Grocery Store (at least mid 60'sish) SW the Church of course SE was an Oilcloth store (flooring store) at one time I think Champeau's or som, ething , NE corner was the New Verdun Restaurant ,.which later on moved to the middle of the block on Wellington ,btwn,.Gordon & Galt (and Yes it's name was at one time New Verdun too)....cause I knw there was another one too
Hi Gloworm ,,.there was a Church just up from the one pictures although up Gordon across Wellington on the NW corner where I mentioned the Cote's Grocery Store,.well right behind it a new Church was built in the mid (maybe early ) 60's...............it was brand new as I played in the excavated site ,as it was being built,......(stepped on a nail ,.and it went right through into my foot, got a tetnus shot I did)......hahahahha But that Church was built for & run by Pastor Johnston (used to be on the radio too),.........then He left theere to move his 'congergation or flock ' or whatever they are called to Ville Lasalle,...I don't know what it became after that ,but it's right in the right vicinity to where your thinking of,...................I played all around this area ,for several years,......I don't know if it's even still there,............but th one in teh picture is still on that corner:
The Onward Gospel Church was on Galt halfway between Wellington and LaSalle. To the best of my knowledge it is still there. Ed
Hi Ed, How're you tonight?.....did you see your house in Burnaby? Dianne
Yes that right Ed ,.and I think it is still there: address was / is 165 Galt Av,......................
Never mind Les, We know that you know St.Clements Church because you've posted them before. We'll forgive you and call it a senior moment. I know all about them. So far this morning I've cut my nose shaving (yes I said my nose), played the wrong tune to the hymn they were singing; lost $120. and sat on the cat. The cat's all right but it wreaked vengeance on my person and I sit more carefully now. Ed
Dianne, Does that answer your question? Ed

Ummm...Ed....and I was afraid to change the subject! Dianne
Hi Sandy was it on the south side though? I will try and find it,.....but on the SE side of Wellington & Desmarchais,.a new small apartment bldg,.went in ....one of the TAxi company's had anoffice dispatch in the basement office,.maybe that property was a Gospel Hall prior to this newer type bldg? What years roughly are we thinking of?
A boyfriend I had once took me to that church...I loved the singing....much more lively than Holy Cross. Dianne
Les, Thanks for posting Onward Gospel, I have never seen inside that Church before. It's interesting to see the plainess of the Evangilistic Churches. No candles or Altars. No Altar rail for Communion. They do not have all the pomp and ceremony that we Catholics do. But one thing I do notice is that all the Evangelistics, weather Pentacostal or Gospel all seem to have PA systems. We have ab Evangelist group that meets here at St.Athanasius on Sunday afternoons and they spent a lot of money on sound equipment. I have no idea why. Our Church is so small and the acoustics are perfect. However they get the people so they must be doing something right. Evangelist congregations are growing while those of us with fixed forms of worship are getting smaller. Ed
Hi Edbro,.....as I Remember Father Thoms,.had No Problem ,...bellowing out a message ...................(STW)

Hi Sandy the front page photo here on VerdunConnections,.....shows the big apartment bldg. at the corner of 6th & Wellington,.......and you can also see the first bdg, the new one I mentioned (new in 69.hahaha) it's the one right on the corner with the 'modern lighter beige colur / tan ??? bricks ,.that's the one tat housed te Either Pontiac or Hemlock Taxi dispatch,.and that the one I thought may be it,.but now I'm trying to picture the back lane behind the big apart.bldg,..and I seem to Remember an offset type of lane ,...and there may very well have been a vacant lot there ...........Now it's bugging me,.So I'm going to have to write that down,.and try to find us a picture of it this week,..... I'm not feeling to much like surfing right now,.as I'm coughing every so often,.You know the kind that just Hurt's when you cough................and I was goping to take it easy tonight,................(but I couldn't help jumping in to try & solve the whereabouts of that hall........hahahahahah cough cough .........ouch!!
Dianne ~ resent, did you receive it yet?
These pictures of Onward Gospel brought back memories! When I was a young girl I was a part of a girl's group that met at Onward Gospel (I think on Fiday nights) I still remember the theme song: Pioneer Girls who crossed the prairies, in the days of wagon trains................ Are any of my "sisters" from Pioneer Girls out there? Pastor Johnston (Brent, I think) had something to do with running the Teen Havens (boys at the corner of LaSalle and Willibrord, girls near Rielle on LaSalle beside the Fire Station). He was the photographer at my wedding (St. Clement's Church, Nov. '77) There might be a member here that can update us on the church he ministered.
Linda...yes i did and I re re sent to you!!!!Did you get it, too? Dianne
Maybe your song from long ago ,.lead you to now live on the prairies???? the sub-concious voice ...........................................................................
Dianne ~ just honkey-dore......something is amiss with my email. It is 8:19 our time and I haven't received your reply yet. What time did you send it? Our email is: frizz@shaw.ca
Linda.. I sent it at 10:10 pm Nova Scotia time.....I'll resend it..... Dianne
Les, We do not say bellowing. The term is, He had stentorian tones. (Which means he bellowed). Ed
Well I guess I didn't like hin using his stentorian tones on me,..so i still spent the dime for collection,in the corner store........................hahahahaha seriously he could be heard,.............loud & clear,..............hahahaha I wonder if he'd still be around? I'm not sure what age he was in the early 60's,. but i suppose he could be retired somewhere now,.Don't they have their own sort of retirement houses,.??
Maggie, Pastor Johnston, Pastor of the air, did a radio program on CKVL where he answered calls about the Gospel. I knew a man named Brent Bennet. He and his wife Phyllis took over from Pastor Johnston when he went to San Francisco. Brent and Phyllis lived in teen haven at the start. Brent died four years ago. His funeral was at Trinity Pentacostal on Champlain at Bishop Power where he was a preacher. There were 500 in attendance. Phyllis still lives on LaSalle corner of Fourth and is still very active in Church work. They raiserd three wonderful children. Incidentally, they were a black family. I don't know if that's the same man you're thinking of. Ed
Maggie - now that is a name I had forgotten about - Pastor Johnson ....but I remember a Pastor Van Johnson. He also did a radio call in program. I remember my mother listening to that and the rantings of Pat Burns. From one extreme to the other. Pioneer girls-I believe friends of mine Judy Grandsire and Ruth Draper were in that group. Laurie

Thanks Ed, I think you hit the nail on the head! The pastor I remember was as you described!
Les I am changing the subject . I hear your chest
hurts every time you cough. Buy yourself some Buckleys cough stuff. You know the
one that tastes so BAD.it works.
Good thing your a guy cause if you wern't you would
also pee every time you cough and then you'd also have to buy Attends to go with
the Buckleys. HA HA HA
Les, I will be seeing Father Cameron at St. Willibrord's this week. I will ask about Father Thoms. Ed
Les, If your congested do what my father used to do . Rub hot Minards on your chest. When the fumes hit your nostrils they clear your head of things like mucous, membranous tissue; skin and bone, but you don't cough. Ed
What are Minards Ed?
Thanks Ed I'm willing to try anything...............(not sure about the Buckley's as Levis suggested) yet anyway,.................. Did nothing most of the day What is menards??......................... I can always Remember the smell of Vicks.. I'll do some NyQuils stuff tonight though,..........I'm into the everything aches stage,......and it's a chore just to sit here and type this out,.but saw you on ,.and thought I'd respond.................. I generally am very seldom down with a cold or flu,..but this one came out of nowhere,.and all I felt like doing since last night is lay around,... and I'll tell you ,.if you want to put yourself through a form of Torture,.then watch daytime TV.................that's enough to make you get up and go do something else................I think I went through a set of batteries for the remote, just lying there,.................Yikes there's a lot crap on the Tube .hahaha
I remember the Gospel Hall from the 50's.. A friend on Melrose Ave took me there. I ended up going to a camp they ran called Frontier Lodge. It was down south-east near the US border on Lake Wallis.. They were nice people, maybe a little too evangelical for the average Verdun kid..My Mom thought a little religion would keep me out of jail.
Minard's Liniment was and still is in a tall thin bottle. It's a white liquid and when you smell it, it's power whirls your brain. It was sometimes used as smelling salts to clear a dizzy persons's head. I remember the old bottles used to say "Also good for horses carbuncles." It cleared congestion if you survived. Ed
Les, If you don't survive can I have that TV remote? Mines shot. Ed
Hi ED, There was two Pentecostal churches in Verdun on either galt or Gordon I don't remember, there was OnWard Gospal, then there was a church Pastor Robert Johnson had before he moved to Trinity in Lasalle. I used to go to Trinity back in the '70ties, before I moved to Edmonton. Pastor Johnson then moved to Edmonton for abit, had a church there before he want on to California. His brother Pastor Wallace Johnson still over sees "Teen Haven", and a good friend of mine is the supervisor there. Van Johnson, Robert's son is actually my Pastor now at Agincourt Pentecostal Church in Scarborough. He's acutaly Dr.Van Johnson, as he has his masters in theoligy and teaches. Pastor Robert still lives in California, but come in for the summers to Ontario, last I heard anyways.
this is a church i seen at 4& 5 verdun ave
a block next to new verudn restaurant
There was the Verdun Gospel Hall at the corner of Lasalle and Wellington, just up from Diamonds shop and facing the corner of the little triangular park. Is that the one referred to? It later closed and became a sort of centre for medical treatments. One of the Sunday School teachers was Clive...? who had a brother called Winston. They lived on the little street linking Rushbrooke Street and Wellington, the second last street before Point St. Charles, so far as I can remember. Was this River Street--and was the next one May Ave?
I remember going to penecostal church as a treen. The pastors son was in the air force and came to a p arty at our house for my sisters 21st birthday - 1946
It was Pastor Piper at the time...Hope was and still is one of my best friends....Verdun zPentecostal church is now Trinity Pentecostal on Shevchenko in Lasalle
