Percy Saltzman First T.V.Weatherman Dies . .

  Good Morning.

I just read that Percy Saltzman has died at the age of 91. He was Canada's first T.V. Weatherman, and First Person to appear on Canadian Television.
He pioneered alot of techniques in weather forecasting and reporting, which still hold to this day ! He was the first Canadian weatherman to to use radar, and satellite. Percy Saltzman also was the first to report road and forest fire reports.

I remember seeing him on our  faithful black and white television . I can still hear his distinctive voice announcing the weather forecast as if it were yesterday. I am wondering if anyone else  out there remembers him ?

Yup - remember Percy Saltzman and his 'magic chalk' very well. Also remember when we would sit and watch the Indian Chief test pattern for hours?  Since we only had 2 or 3 channels, we'd get so excited when we could pull in Poland Springs and Burlington  trying to figure out what we were looking at through all the snow and listening through all the static? Didn't we used to put steel wool on our rabbit ears to try to get better reception?  Ah, memories..... judy in NB

I remember those 2 or 3 channels. And now we have 2 or 3 hundred channels and I have a hard time finding something I enjoy.

A friend in Ontario recommended the 'Prairie... show and also 'Corner Gas'. I haven't had the pleasure of watching either show. It would be great if I could pick them up on the internet. I used to watch a funny Canadian show called 'Red & Green'. Maybe mistaken on the tittle. Funny show whatever it was called.

Mosque has gotten a lot of publicity here and the reviews have been mixed.  Personally I don't watch much TV especially Canadian because the production values always look very unprofessional.  (Don't hurt me.)  :-)  You can always tell when it's shot in Canada  or is a CBC production.   I will watch the first episode and am always disappointed.  I have to admit I haven't watched Mosque so can't comment.  I've seen highlights though and it doesn't call to me.  :-)   I do have favourites that I don't miss.  Ugly Betty gives me a good laugh -- I support any show that tells girls that it's okay if they aren't a size 0 ; So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars because I was a dancer once a lifetime ago and I love to watch good performances and be entertained and, of course, our entire family is into 24 and Jack Bauer.  I'm not into thrillers but this show is mesmerizing.  We've never missed an episode since the first season and have all the DVDs.  We watched the four hour premier last week --- 4 hours over 2 days.  The director received a Golden Globe  for best director in a drama series and said this season's plot is close to reality.  A small atom bomb explodes over an American city.  Jack Bauer was too late.  A possibility?  Scary.  This show is fast paced, action packed and is over before you realize it and you can hardly wait for the next episode.  And of course, Keifer Sutherland, who is Canadian, yes! does a great job as Jack Bauer.    So what does everyone else recommend?   Dolly

Wow That's a beautiful area ,...and a nice picture .......almost postcard like. All our snow here in Victoria is gone,..as I just drove across town,.along the waterfront,....and hte sun was shinning people were out walking, some with their pets,...and everything looked great,.............back to normal I hope,.I felt like there could have been some nice pictures taken today,...but i didn't have a camera with me (which is rare),.......but in anycase I really appreciated the break from the 'greyish' & snow days we've had,........        Thanks for the picture of your 'Neck of the Woods'..........is looks great Btw: my brother should be in NYC ,just about now,...for a Jewellery Type Trade Show./.........so I would think Snow is not what he was waiting to see, but rather that springlike weather you guys have been having,.....  .......maybe we should start a thread of Our Neck of the Woods,....so everyone of our members could try & post pictures from where they live,...to share this little Globe were on,.with everyone.........?? Your picture Sandy would be a Nice Start........................

Hi Sandy,   Man, I love New York!  Great shot of the kids!  I don't have a digital camera but will see if I can borrow from work.  I know I know...I'm behind the times.   Les, can't promise you green in April this year.  Last 3 years, the snow was gone by March but this year, the old snow from the blizzard two weeks ago is sticking around like velcro to the pavement.   Thanks for asking about the novel.  I am half way there and am trying to meet my deadline by end of March for the first draft.  And still lots of research to do re political stuff in Montreal around the late sixties and seventies that I need to incorporate.  I love the characters and especially the protagonist.  I've had interruptions with other projects that are now out of the way, so hopefully I can meet my deadline.  I've had the first chapter critiqued and  received good feedback so I'm encouraged and excited.   BTW a recent short story I wrote received Honourable Mention in the mainstream/literary short story category for the 75th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition in the states.  It was rejected twice in Canada!  Market too narrow here, so all my stuff is now heading for the states!  There were 19,000 entries in this competition, and I received a certificate of achievement award and a letter of congratulations.  Only the winners will be published with the HM having their name and title listed in the book.  The story is now with a publisher in the states and is the third  story in a collection of short stories that I'm also working on.  So keep your fingers crossed!    I expect to be in another anthology later this year, edited by the same editor for Standing Together.  I'll find out next Sunday when I meet with her.  Linda Goyette is a great supporter of my work.   Again thanks for asking....and remembering.   Dolly

Sandy,
You are on the Island at Times Square by 43rd Street. 7th Avenue is on the right side of the picture, Broadway is on the left side of the picture. You guys are right where Broadway crosses 7th Avenue. The camera looking at The Coca-Cola sign is facing north. 17 blocks north is Central Park. To the right of the picture are The ABC Good Morning America Studios and to the left of the picture on the second floor are The MTV Studios. You are about 100 yards away from The New York Times (left side of picture) where your company used to deliver the giant rolls of paper. If you were here at 1am you would probably see some trucks with rolls of paper on Broadway waiting to pull up to The New York Times loading dock. What a handsome group-Walter

Sandy,
Does Planet Hollywood still have the big Mountain Dew sign above it that says "Mountain Dew available at Planet Hollywood?" It's been two years and three months since I have been in Times Square. My M10 bus ride from 50th Street through Times Square to Penn Station. Those were the days-Walter

Sandy and Walter,   Brings back memories of my first trip to the Big Apple in the late seventies.  I remember I was surprised that all the theatres weren't on Broadway but on the side streets.  I imagined Broadway as just one long street with all the theatres situated there but not the case.   Lucky you to live so close.   Dolly

Hi Sandy,   We used to go to the Village to watch the off-off Broadway shows because that's where all the new exciting plays started.  We also hit the East Village which is quite run down from what I remember, but that was off off off off Broadway and the plays there were really experimental, avant garde stuff.  I remember bumping into Michel Tremblay there.  The audience sat on benches in a circle and I looked across and there he was beard and all.  He had just written Hosanna.  I would have been shy to approach him in Montreal but when in New York, I don't know, I came up to him after the show and had to tell him how much I enjoyed his plays.  He looked stunned that someone should recognize  him in New York!  Love New York!    Expensive yes, but just walking around, like you say, there is so much atmosphere and kinetic energy and great for people watching and listening.   Dolly

Sandy,
Planet Hollywood. Unfortunately I never checked it out. You know what it's like to work in the city. You get in and you get out. Riding the M10 bus to Penn Station you couldn't help but see the big Planet Hollywood Mountain Dew sign from the M10 bus, it was huge-Walter

Hi Anna,   I heard that about Percy Saltzman. Many weathermen today credit much of their styles adopted from his. Don't forget about him tossing the chalk in the air and catching it at the end of his report.     Mike
