BEST FOOD IN VERDUN

Does anyone remember Rex Pizza at 2nd avenue and Wellingon (I think).  The owner was Nick. When you asked for extra anything, you got extra !!   The french fries were out of this world also.
Ah.....the smell of Kentucky Fried Chicken wafting through the air  at Lasalle and Verdun Avenues.  Another memory.
Any comments. ?

one review of Magnan's: To enjoy the finest roast beef in Montreal, diners need only cross the small bridge overlooking the Lachine canal. Once they spot the brick building with the small sign that reads "Restaurant et Taverne Magnan", they will have arrived at the site of a thriving family business with an impressive local history. It all started in 1932, when Marie-Ange and Armand Magnan opened a small tavern catering to workers of the canal and neighbouring factories. Their plan was to offer simple, homespun and affordable meals in a friendly setting. Success came quickly and with it, a series of expansions. In 1953, Yves, the son, took over, and in 1989, women no longer had to disguise themselves in order to gain admission, an event which soon prompted the opening of a more refined dining room. Yves' son-in-law, Alain Gauthier, now runs this infamous Montreal institution.

Patrons will find everything they require to satisfy their needs regardless of the time of day, their moods or appetites. During the week, breakfast is served as early as 8:00 am, the perfect time to grab a bite before work. The terrace is open in the summer and parking spaces are available year-round. The restaurant displays an impressive collection of black and white photos retracing the history of the establishment. One floor above, the tavern features a wide screen television that projects sporting matches or other popular programs. And in the other room, a roaring fire crackles beneath the chimney. The decor has remained faithful to the past, which the regulars greatly appreciate.

Sampling the famous roast beef is a must. Tender and juicy, it is still prepared according to a secret recipe that dates back 40 years. Other favourites include the grilled meats, the poached or grilled salmon, and the pig knuckles, not to mention the gigantic beef ribs. For lunch, a number of sandwiches are offered, including the highly recommended Magnan roast beef club. Beer lovers will enjoy the light and dark ales, served on tap, of course.

Patrons who would like their friends to sample the delicious meat cuts can purchase them on site, as well as home-made tourtieres and assorted pies; just ask your waiter!   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lynn ,you can also order to take home,........We sometimes have their black pepper sauce ,sent out to us here on Vancouver Island,.....and it's always appreciated,...generally friends of ours ,will pick up and send us a 'Care' package from Home,.....Smoked Meat ,.or Cheese Curds,...PepperSauce,.... and it's usually a 'must' stop when visiting I'm visiting,Montreal (along with all the other mandatory stops,....EggRolls,.Pizza,...Smoked Meat,......Steamies,(& a few 'toastees' too)...............hahahahaha Always good for a few extra pounds on the way back,,,,,,,,(of & plenty of Cold Ones,too).......... Although I  have heard of a few poor reviews,at Magnan's in the last few years,...It still is first to Pop into my mind.........The Capri is apparently considered really good ,.......although I have sampled the Molson in the Capri,.I have not had occasion to eat there yet,.....but it will be on my list, next time I get to go to Montreal,........ Les, I agree vaccum pack is the best. I have been sending smoked meat out west to Calgary and as far as Tasu by air and Smither's, Granisle and a few other places for over 20 years. I treat my sisters to a party every now and then with a brisket or two with the rye bread and what ever trimings. Always from Quebec Smoked meat. They vaccum pack it whole or if you wish they will slice and then vaccum pack it for you. Danny

I knew I'd find an old Fresco post:(a train/bus enthusiast) From: Fresco  in response to Message 372 Sent: 4/1/2005 9:04 AM Hi JMH, The white flag means it's a special or extra. If a group of people chartered a streetcar or extra trains were put in service that were not normally scheduled. This could be for sporting events, holidays-anything that caused them to add additional service. In 1963 I bought tickets for a chartered ride on CNR to Hemmingford, Quebec. It was sponsored by The Canadian Railroad Historical Association in Delson, Quebec. We had a little three car train that flew the white flags. Passenger trains were no longer running on this line in 1963, we got a lot of surprised looks and waves from people along the line. The train ended at the US border where the tracks ended. We were told that the train used to cross the border and go on to Lake Placid & then on to Utica, New York. I think the CNR removed the train tracks to Hemmingford in the eighties. I'm glad I rode it when I could. It's the only chartered train ride I've ever been on. Now that I'm retired I'm going to try and do some more chartered train rides. Ft.Myers, Florida has a tourist train that does some all day charter run   ....................Have Fun and Remember Verdun........................................

Yes   Johnmelinvin,....there was a Hot Dog Shack (on the River Side, closer to Verdun),.........most likely near Alepin (there may have been two) but they were literally just little wooden shacks,............

winnie3ave MSN said...

John. Yes there was a reasaurant close to the dam. It was more a take out, summer type place selling hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. Nothing fancy. I did not know the person who drowned. But I remember someone "hooked" a body while finishing one Saturday. I just happen to be there when they pulled him from the river. It was not a pretty site. I felt sick most of the day after that.

Hi Laurie !     Yes I remember Rex's restaurant , Actually Nick was my dad's friend as were the other restaurant owners in Verdun, being Greek and all. The food was great back then, it has changed since then. There were so many classy , and good restaurants back then. My godfather had a restaurant called " Johnny's " on fifth avenue , and
Wellington, and it had been there for years, just beside a Jewellery Store, he did very well. It was owned by John Vatsis. Everyone loved to go there ! There are so many to name. There was the Restaurant on Wellington and Rielle owned by none other than Alex Lappos 's Dad and previously owned by his father Dennis, we all knew each other.   There was also another restaurant, and now because I want to mention it the name escapes me, it was owned By Jimmy Arvanitakis right on Wellington, and if I am not mistaken right in Front of the where the Pharmaprix is presently , I think it was the Miss Wellington, or the New Verdun restaurant, sorry the mind is a little slow sometimes, if someone can help me out here, I would appreciate it ! There was also the famous Woodland's Restaurant and it still stands today ,  also knew the family, at least my father did. Also on Wellington near Ethel, was the Famous Labelle Bar-b-que. that was a real busy restaurant ! My Grandmother lived right behind the back of the restaurant, and we could go right to the Kitchen , and place an order , and take it out. They had the best Fish and Chips, and also great Chinese Food freshly made ! They use to serve fish, and chips in newspaper when I was young , I never forgot that, and the smell of the delicious fries, and fish mmmmmmm !!!!   Getting in from the back of the restaurant we got a bird's eye view of the goings on and preparation of all the meals while waiting for our order !!!!   Times have changed so much, but you cannot forget great Verdun Memories, to me Wellington along time ago in my youth was like a little Westmount by the sea ! Wellington was really in full splendour in my youth, and those memories, and smells will never leave me that is one thing for sure !!!!  Just bringing back a little Nostalgia ha, ha !   Sweet_N_Gorgeous Anna

SweetNGA,....your right it was called New Verdun Restaurant,it was at one time located right on the Corner of Gordon & Wellington,..then moved to the center of the block ,beside a store called Sally Shops (I rode my skateboard,in the foyer there cause the SallyShops had that real smooth service, When they moved the New Verdun from the corner, they made it look really fancy (frontage) that was directly across the street from me(I lived at 4242 Wellington, above the old MountRoyalFurniture Store,..which became Better Bargain Store,.(or something like that) ,..the whole building was demolished, after a few fires,...and the old Greenbergs moved to that side of the street (to vacate where they were on the Corner of Galt & Wellington,...they moved to make room for the Metro Station to be built,...i ubderstand as you say it is now a Pharmacy of some type..... when the New Verdun was on the corner of Gordon & Wellington,..there was a Chinese Laundry right behind it on Gordon at the Lane...... Here's Rex's Again:   .......this is not the best picture,..but on the corner past these trucks digging up Wellington,....is the old New Verdun Restaurant,........(if you knew the sign, you can just make it out ,sort of ......right hand side of the shot,....from where this picture was taken,.the photographer would have to be standing almost directly in front of where the New Verdunended up......middle of the block btwn Gordon & Galt on Wellington's North Side.........   .....that picture predates the Sally Shops even........
