Hi Wayne I lived on Bannantyne between Demarchais & Melrose then moved up to Melrose in High School live about 4 houses down from VHS. Used to leave home when the 1st. bell rang and run like H--L
Hi Arbutus, I have two friends that are retired from the MUC Force one worked out of Westmount . His name is Ed Whitehurst I rented a house from him at one time and the other who taught Ed the ropes when he started out is Yvon Legault who I believe worked out of Westmount at one time and was stationed in LaSalle most of his career. Did you happen to know either of them. Danny
Hi Arbutus, My wife was good friends with his wife Brenda. They worked together at the Royal Bank. After she died Ed asked if we wanted to rent his house in St.Hubert so we rented it from him for a couple of years. I believe Ed drives a school Bus here in LaSalle these days. Yvon is very good to my wife and I, he helps us out with things that I can no longer do and brings us spring water from his cottage when he can. I haven't seen him in a while but he drops by when he isn't to busy with his contracting buisness. I'll say hi for you. Danny
It is a small world after all. I remember all the Westmount guys from up north. My father in law was a Westmount cop for 25yrs. he died in 1971 only 50 yrs. old. My husband knew John and the guys because he played softball with them in Westmount and later up north. We live in the Laurentians, the last one's to leave La Belle Province. We live near Morin Heights. St. Sauveur area. My Brother Bill is a Firefighter in Vaughan near Toronto, he should retire but is hanging in for a couple more years. I am the oldest, 61 this year and Bill is two years younger, my sister Lynn( Levis jeans) is 10 years younger. Her memories of Verdun are very different than mine. I am an old timer compared to her. I attented a reunion at Dawson Boys Club awhile ago, it was great, over 200 people showed up. One thing I remember is that no one was bragging about where and what they were doing now, everyone just talked about the good old days. We were all from the same type of families. Hard Working, Dads and Stay at home Moms.
Hi Gary It sure is a small world. My father in law was a cop in Westmount for 25 yrs. he died at the age 0f 50 in 1971. My husband knew all the westmount guys, he played softball with them in Westmount and later up North. We live near Morin Heights, St. Sauveur area, moved up 30 yrs. ago. I guess we are the last ones here in La Belle Province. still enjoy the patate frites and steamee. Bill is a firefighter in Vaughan near Toronto, I am the oldest 61 this year, Bill is 2 yrs. younger and Lynn (levisjeans) is 10 yrs. younger, so our memories of Val David and Verdun are different. I attended a great reunion at Dawson Boys Club a few years back, it was the first one and we had over 200 people show up and got together for two days. The thing that impressed me most was that no one was bragging about what they did now everyone just talked about the good old days. We were really all from the same type of families, middle class, with hard working Dads and stay at home Moms.
Are you the same Judy Brown that lived on Rushbrooke Street in the mid 40's (gawd, we sound old, don't we? - but we're still young at heart!!!). You were very pretty with blonde curly hair and we used to play ball - sevens-sies, six-sies, fives-sies, etc. against the brick wall on the corner of either River or May. You had one of those balls that really bounced good and I was so envious. When the train would go by on the overpass down at the end of Rushbrooke, we would run down and wave at the conductor. Does that sound familiar to you at all? Then again, maybe you're not the same Judy...just thought I'd give it a shot. Judy in NB
Hi Judy in NB That is me, I lived at 3020 Rushbrooke St, and was always playing ball at the corner of May Av & Rushrbooke. Don't know how they stood the pounding on the wall, when I think about it now.....remember the ball very well, not sure where I got it, but it was like a lacrosse ball...Remember skipping too. Do you remember Gisele Leduc, she too lived on Rushbrooke, just a couple of doors down from us. Talked to her on Christmas day and her twin brother Gilles, they both live in Florida now...this site is so great, I love it. Judy in Peterborough
Hi to other Judy on the rock. Name was Frank,,snookie..lived near the halfway..across from the school..next door to Diane Redfern and the Hendy's, below the Chaisons..
Wow - small world, isn't it? We lived at 3182 Rushbrooke at my maternal grandmother's place 'cause my dad was away in the Navy. Remember the church on the corner of River & Wellington that had the double row of piped fencing and we would spend hours hanging upside down off the fence and doing somersaults? Who needed TV anyway? I'm sorry - I don't remember Gisele at all. I remember the girl next door - her name was Carol Cornwall. Remember the big D.I.L. field in front of us? And the big Textile company behind it? What did that stand for anyway? Does anyone know? judy in NB
That church was close to funeral home??Eerie that was..and the folk that ran it..haha..(McGillvery's)?? D.I.L..was Defense Industries Limited..I believe and yes..was chased outta there many a time..under the Stelco fence. There is a great page on Goggle under Verdun D.I.L.>>> to read.
you hit it right on when you mentioned hard working dads and stay at home MOMS..That was the true verdun spirit at the time.My mom raised 9 children and my father worked and worked hard to feed them,he use to come home form work, eat supper, then start reading the montreal star newspaper , never finished it, he would fall asleep in the lazy boy chair and snore like the devil.. John
We lived at 3380 Rushbrooke.lower flat..one set of flats over from the only black family ..the Gibbons, colored was the term then..Think Walter was his name and had an older brother, and a beautiful sister..sigh..

Hi Carolyn, I'm in Coral Spring. It's the greater Ft. Lauderdale area on the east coast. I was looking around for a map to see where you live but I couldn't find it.
On the map here you can see Coral Springs near Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Harbor on the Gulf side and to the North near Clearwater and Tampa. Hope this helps. Looks like quite a drive.
Happy Birthday Bahamas,....................................YIKES..............hahahahahahaI'm sure cake couldn't possibly have this many candles,..... I'm sure your the same age as us all,.... 39 (USD)
Hi Maggie-I'm here but am wondering why people don't post their real names...I'm sure that if they did,I'd know quite a few of them-I graduated in 1971 and would love to get in touch with old friends but it's impossible unless their names are visible! I'm sure that a LOT of us agree! Thanks... I'm Cathy Wilkins.
I agree Cathy, all new members must supply their names to gain membership. We thought we would try this and see if it didn't frighten members away. We've added about 50 members since introducing this in the fall so it will stay. We strongly recommend that old members update their profiles to include their first and last names. The "sml" list was also created because updating profiles is difficult (thanks MSN) most of the time and some people feel that they are not safe to share that much info in their MSN profiles. The sml is only accessable to members. Quite a few members have sent information to be added to the sml list. When I get back to my own PC, I will work on that.
Magpie, before withdrawing from Verdun Connections, please try changing your membership settings so that new messages are not sent to your email account. Shadowmama Laura,....Thanks for checking in ,.......... many people enjoy reading the posts ,.and some like to jump right in ,.We Appreciate all the members and I hope we keep everyone somewhat in touch with Verdun,.Montreal,. etc etc ,....... Now's my chance ,so I'll ask you to,..Do you happen to have any pictures from your days in Verdun,.if you'd like to share ,we sure like to see them....I am going with the premise that if I ask enough times,.We might hit the motherload one day.......hahahahahah Thanks Again for letting us know your here
Hi ShadowMama_Laura,........ All pictures are great,................we're getting old enough to like everything,....................hahahaWe all shared alot of the same type of growing up,........and all the places are familiar,.......I would bet you'll find some neat stuff,in your Mom's collection,.......
Hello Judy glad you checked in............................. Reminds me of that old song, that Kenny Rogers sang, with a group called the ??? First Edition ?? (something like that)the name of the song was "Just Dropped In......to see ,what condition ,my condition was in.."..............Long before he chose country stuff,.he was in a rock band.......? anyone Remember that old song???written by a Michael Newbury? Now if these lyrics don't tell us something about the 60's..............physcodelic era..................hahahahahahKenny Rogers - Just Dropped In Lyrics
To See What Condition My Condition Was In) (Mickey Newbury) (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) I woke up this mornin` with the sundown shinin` in I found my mind in a brown paper bag within I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high I tore my mind on a jagged sky I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in I watched myself crawlin` out as I was a-crawlin` in I got up so tight I couldn`t unwind I saw so much I broke my mind I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in Yeah yeah oh-yeah ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I hope the appropriate credits are here,............(Rdm whadya think?).......hahahahaHate to have SOCAN pay me a visit,..............hahahahahahah.....................I give up............hahahahahahaha
les funny you should mention mickey newbury.. he's not a household name but is a very creative artist.. he wrote / performed all styles.. at one time he had songs on the hit parade in 4 different genres.. blues, country, rock (the song you noted) and pop... he has past on.. i have all his albums (cd's)..
Rdm I'll have to look into that,.I have tons of albums,.but I don't recall off hand Mickey Newbury's other stuff,...........Funny how somethings can slip past you & you think your on top of things,I like finding new artists,..(old in this case ,) I will look up some of his stuff then ,....Thanks for the lead,Now for the pool hall thing ,.I've spent time last night & this morning trying to find a picture of the place ,.as I mentioned I can visualise it so easily,..but I cannot for the life of me recall any a particular name,.....other than the pool hall ,.and the point always had some interesting habndles for places,.like the 'do drop in' the Bucket of Blood,...etc etc..................but I 'will' find a picture ,cause it's bugging me now.............hahahahahah
re: mickey newbury... his albums were not that well known... especially in canada.. he is more known for his writing.. many artists recorded his songs.. for what it's worth he has a web site.. http://www.mickeynewbury.com hope the link works...
that is quite a repetoire.................................amazing how many covers were done of his stuff,......................just what I need more reading........hahahaha
so nice to have this site to go to once in awhile, Verdun was a special place to grow up in.,Just wondering if we all should show our real name, who knows some of us might know eachother . we are all not getting younger.

Hello Judy glad you checked in............................. Reminds me of that old song, that Kenny Rogers sang, with a group called the ??? First Edition ?? (something like that) the name of the song was "Just Dropped In......to see ,what condition ,my condition was in.."..............Long before he chose country stuff,.he was in a rock band.......? anyone Remember that old song??? written by a Michael Newbury? Now if these lyrics don't tell us something about the 60's..............physcodelic era..................hahahahahah Kenny Rogers - Just Dropped In Lyrics
To See What Condition My Condition Was In) (Mickey Newbury) (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) I woke up this mornin` with the sundown shinin` in I found my mind in a brown paper bag within I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high I tore my mind on a jagged sky I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in I watched myself crawlin` out as I was a-crawlin` in I got up so tight I couldn`t unwind I saw so much I broke my mind I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in (Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in) Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in Yeah yeah oh-yeah ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I hope the appropriate credits are here,............(Rdm whadya think?).......hahahahaHate to have SOCAN pay me a visit,..............hahahahahahah.....................I give up............hahahahahahaha
les funny you should mention mickey newbury.. he's not a household name but is a very creative artist.. he wrote / performed all styles.. at one time he had songs on the hit parade in 4 different genres.. blues, country, rock (the song you noted) and pop... he has past on.. i have all his albums (cd's)..
and by the way the lyric cyber police is gonna get you sooner or later.. LMAO
Rdm I'll have to look into that,.I have tons of albums,.but I don't recall off hand Mickey Newbury's other stuff,........... Funny how somethings can slip past you & you think your on top of things, I like finding new artists,..(old in this case ,) I will look up some of his stuff then ,....Thanks for the lead, Now for the pool hall thing ,.I've spent time last night & this morning trying to find a picture of the place ,.as I mentioned I can visualise it so easily,..but I cannot for the life of me recall any a particular name,.....other than the pool hall ,. and the point always had some interesting habndles for places,.like the 'do drop in' the Bucket of Blood,...etc etc.................. but I 'will' find a picture ,cause it's bugging me now.............hahahahahah
glad i can keep you busy...LOL.. very good point...(no pun inteded).. but we did tend to give our own names to places...
re: mickey newbury... his albums were not that well known... especially in canada.. he is more known for his writing.. many artists recorded his songs.. for what it's worth he has a web site.. http://www.mickeynewbury.com hope the link works...
that is quite a repetoire.................................amazing how many covers were done of his stuff,......................just what I need more reading........hahahaha
