Hi Wendy, Thought you would get a kick out a slice of Melrose/Rinder life from the past. Taken from the Lovell's Montreal address and phone directory. In those days they listed the occupation and employer of the breadwinner and I see your Dad was with the CPR Police. A friend of mine from Verdun, Bob Farrell, was with CPR Police. I was with the Westmount Police / Montreal Urban Community Police. Maybe your Dad may have known Bob. HOPE THE LISTING BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF MELROSE Gary Mace Saanich, BC
Hi Wendy, Lucky you in SUNNY and WARM Florida. I go to Lakeland most years for a week or two. I've been in Brampton Ontario (Near Toronto) for the last 30 years. From the "class" of '71 Bill (Willie) McKiernon
Hi Wendy You used to live next door to one of my good friends Kent Saunders. I was over there all the time.Good to see you are doing well. We were the ones always parking in front of his place with the mustangs and so on. Just wanted to say how sorry I was when I heard about Pete. I could not believe it. Miss the snow? Take care Boyd
Hi Wendy Remember me the bigger bossier one. Look time no see if I can figure out how to send pictures I have some taken on Melrose when you and lynn were young. Glo
Gloria, When you open up to rely to a message you'll see a tool bar. Under font size is a yellow square - click on it - click on my computer - then use browse button to find the file where your pictures are - then click on Add Photos and voila you send your message. Gary, Saanich, BC
Hi Gary, that is just wild. I see my oldest friends address there along with mine . My Dad is now 92 and lives at Ste. Anne de Bellviews Vet Hospital. I lived for the first 19 yrs. of my life at that address until I moved to my 1st apt. with a girl friend to Church and Bannantyne.
Hey bossy, good to hear from you. I remember you being a huge Elvis Presley fan lying in bed with you albums and a cast on your leg which I can't remember why,but you were a bossing us.I'd send you some pics if I knew how to do it also. I just learned how do work this damned thing a couple of days ago. It's about time I get with the 21st century. TTFN
Hi Boyd, yes I remember Kent Saunders and his family, I think he had an older brother but I can't remember his name.I remember Kenny trying to look into my front basement window when I had my girlfriends over. We had a bedroom in the basement that my brothers Pete and Steve used to share until they moved out west when I was 16. Yes it was a shock when Pete passed. I was up there for the funeral in May of 2005. I'm sorry but I don't know if I remember you without your last name. I recognize some of the names on this site, but I can't place their faces. Take care Wendy
Arbutus, I had a classmate named Alan Wood. His father was a Westmount Cop. Everyone loved him. His nickname was "Woody." Woody's son Alan unfortunately passed away at age 20. Did you work with or know Woody? Walter
Hi Walter, Yes I knew Woody. I started with Westmount in 1967 and Woody was at that point a civilian dispatcher. He had suffered a stroke and was partially paralyed. He always had a very positive attitude and had a very good sense of humor. I believe he suffered the stroke while still an active police officer and when he was well enough to return to work he came back in a civilian capacity. Gary Mace Saanich, BC
Gary, did you know Charlie Poxon. He was a Westmount policeman for some time. He still lives on the south shore and was still playing hockey up to a few years ago.
Yes Wayne I know Charlie very well. He still lives on the south shore and still plays hockey. I talked with Charlie about a month ago. Charlie was a pretty good hockey player. He played for the Verdun Maple Leafs in the early 1960's. He nearly lost his life playing in Cornwall when a skate of an opposing player nicked his jugular vein. I bet Charlie could have easily made the NHL of today. Another excellent hockey player, from Verdun, was Bobby Heaney who in the Boston Bruin organization. He played in places like Estevan, Saskatchewan, Amarillo Texas, Hershey, Pennsylvania. Last I heard of Bob he was a fireman in either CoteSt Luc or Hampstead. I wonder if anyone has heard of Bob lately The Heaney's lived on Allard just above Bannantyne. He married a gal named Jackie. He too could have made todays NHL. I think Chuck Catto might have signed him for Boston. Gary Mace Saanich, BC
did anyone know a Jim Adams from the westmount fire dept..nice guy , nice family..Jim passed away a few years back..A lot of good firemen and policemen came from the verdun/point area..Think they whole O'reilly family was firemen.. John Taylor
Hi Johnmelinvin,....Unfortunately we had to add Jim to our growing 'Silent ' membership ........a little while ago,....... OBITUARY JIM ADAMS 1940 - 2006 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and untimely passing of Jim Adams on July 10, 2006, at the age of sixty-six. Jim will be greatly missed by his wife of forty-four years, Elizabeth (McIntyre), his three children Kim (Richard), Tracy (Stephen) and Kevin, as well as by Granddad's angels Adam, Brianne and Timothy. Jim was the son of the late Jim and Jessie Adams and was brother to Andrew (Joan). Jim was immensely proud of having retired as the last Westmount Fire Chief and Director of Public Security. Jim will no doubt be remembered for his years of tireless work volunteering as both President of LaSalle Minor Hockey Association and Riverside Park Pool. Jim was a devoted family man with a great love of life. We love you and will carry you with us always. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening July 12 from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 5644 Bannantyne Ave., Verdun (at Beatty). Funeral service in St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 28 Second St. East, Cornwall, Ontario, on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 2 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to service in church. This memorial is posted in the 'In Memoriam' Section at the lefthand side of the opening page here at Verdun Connections,......a few people here on the site are good friends of his,....but Thanks for giving us an update ,......
Gary Thanks for the info on sending pics. What are the rules, I have some pics from the Dawsons Reunion but am I allowed to put pics on of other people without their permission???? Sandra Smithman says Hi, she lost you e-mail address so I will pass it on to her, we keep in touch on a regular basis. Glo
HI Wendy Kenny's brother's name was Dave. He was married and lived in LaSalle. You had a girlfriend who lived at the corner on Bannantyne. Did one of you work at the BMO on Verdun Ave. One day I am walking past and you opened the window from the office and asked me if I knew her. Said yeah and I kept walking.I knew her to see but not to talk to. Figured just keep going you guys were having a good time. Take care Good the hear your Dad is doing well. Boyd Gladwish class of 70
Hi again Gary. I remember that injury to Charlie's neck. I heard that the trainer saved his life by keeping him on his feet raher than lying him down. Charlie is one of the good guys. Soft spoken and a real gentleman..
Hey Boyd, sorry I don't recognize your name, but maybe if I saw a pic.Yeah I remember Dave now.Good looking guy back then. Do you still speak to Kent? That was my good friend Linda Bullard who worked at the BMO,also Terry Malone worked there for a long time too. TTFN
Hi Have not spoke to Kent in years. Heard he is married and lives on West Island. HIs mom passed few years ago. Car accident in Fla.His dad had passed on and she was remarried. Used to have a good time over at his place. Boyd
Glo, I was in Alan's class. He was a great guy. I did not live near Alan. We were not neighbor hood friends however Alan was a really nice guy in our class. Everyone loved Alan and his Dad. My Mother had known Alan's Dad for years. Woody was definitely the most famous and best loved Cop in town. It is so sad that Alan passed away at such a young age. He would have done so well in whatever path he would have chosen. Please give my best to your husband. I loved his Dad, he guided many of us on to the correct path. Woody was an unbelievable guy. I can remember that The Westmount Examiner had more than one story on Woody. I wished that I had saved those stories. I am not the best person with words but anyone who has ever met Woody knows what I'm talking about-Walter
I think I remember you from Verdun. Did you hang out with Diane Pigeon? I thought I recognized your name and now it has come to me. My Mom was Jean Whalen's sister. We go to Fla. and stay in New Port Richey we have friends that spend the winter there. Where do you live when not in Fla. I still live in Que. Have been living in the Laurentians for 29 yrs. near Morin Heights, St. Sauveur area. Glo
Hi Gary .. the world gets smaller everyday..I knew Charlie well also he lived on the corner of Egan and Bannantyne..Did you happen to know Stanley Williams also? He lived in the next block to Charlie....Brenda
Hi Brenda, Stan Williams can't say I do know him. The name vaguely rings a bell, what did he do. Did he attend VHS, who did he hang out with, what did he do after school, play hockey or football. Might help jog my memory. Putting his name out here might elicit a reponse from someone who will remember him. That's what this is all about. Gary Mace Saanich, BC 1045 Valiquette/920 Moffat
hi gloria, yes its me, i am not far from new port richey at all, so when you are down here we can rendez vous. i live here fulltime , i will not be here for the month of march. travelling. keep in touch, carolyn
Seeing Brenda's name caused me to remember Brenda Davidson. She lived on Manning (I think) between Verdun and Bannantyne. She would have been in the 57 or 58 VHS class. I think she was going out with Dave Clark in high school. Has anyone heard of her or where she is??
Glo, Arbutus, I remember the summer of 58 when Police Officer Les Wood "Woody" pulled a car over on Lansdowne Avenue near Sherbrooke Street for a traffic violation. Woody did not know when he stopped the car that it was stolen. A "gentleman" in the passenger seat bolted from the car and was seen running in to Westmount Park with a gun in his hand. Woody immediately arrested the driver of the car and called for backup. In seconds Westmount Park was crawling with cops. I can't remember if the guy in the park shot at the Cops or just threatened to. In those days Cops did not negotiate like today, they just took swift action. This guy was caught and arrested in no time. Today this kind of thing happens all the time but back in the fifties this was a really big thing. This story made the Montreal Star, Montreal Gazette and was the front page story on the weekly Westmount Examiner. Walter
Hi all If someone out in Verdun cyberspace is a paid up member of classmates, I need help contacting a classmates member. If you can help, email me at wbrien@escape.ca
Fresco I recall a very similar incident ,only this one took place in Ville Lasalle late one night the cops stopped a guy who was at the very least drawing attention to himself ,.from a passing police cruiser,..so they stopped the car ,.and ended up giving the guy a break & telling him to park the car,and grab a cab home (or something like that),......and the cops continued on there rounds,.....and a few minutes later see the same guy drivng the car again,....so they pulled up beside the guy ,to get him to pull over, and the guy Fired a shot through the window,........I can't recall if an officer was killed,.but I'm fairly certain that one of them 'lost' an eye......his name I beleive was something like Richard Oss (??) maybe Gary Remembers this incident,.......I'm just relying on memory right now,but I think the guy was an escaped or wanted man in Massachusest (??).................Strange a guy gets a break and doesn't take advantage of it........
Hi Carolyn. Brenda Davidson has just registered with classmates. I'm not a paid up member but I'm getting some help from someone who is. Hopefully we'll get an email address for her.
