John, I think that I remember a little "Shack" on LaSalle Blvd. around
Alepin St. It was on the side of the River, many people owned this place
from time to time. In the early 50'S, I thought that they sold the best hot
dog's & fries that you could ever feast upon. In those days it wasn't open
in the Winter. It would only be open in the summer. Further west along
LaSalle the Knight's of Columbus would have, what they called a "Tombola",
every summer, where we kids would go & hook up with each other & just run
amok. The whole Town would come out to this event. It was a lot of fun.
Across from the power house on 8th Av & LaSalle a restaurant opened in the
sixties. They sold ice cream & the usual dog's & fries, But they weren't
nearly half as good as the "Shack" on Alepin.
Also on 9th Av. & Edward across the St. where I believe LaSalle Catholic
High is presently, or it might be 9th & Central, there was a field between
the Bronx & the LaSalle Golf Club. Well for a couple of years they brought
in an Amusement Park. Now that was even more fun than the Tombola.... Does
any one remember these things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Norman. I remember the amusement park in the summer time. For a few dollars you could go and have fun all day. Just hanging around. It was great fun. Winston Allison

Yes synergize,..that's the restaurant I was thinking about,..but hadn't read this post yet,..... Good recall,........I also Remember when I could look out my back window on 9th av,......and there was nothing on Bishop Power,......and you could see all the way through the grounds of the old Golf Course,..and as for the school LCCHS was at 9th & Centrale........... There was also the Hotdog Joint (Lasalle Drive in),....near 63rd -ish,on the river side of Lasalle (where a man tried in vain to stop his car from sliding into the drink-----unfortunately he couldn't do it,.and his family were in the car, Here's a link to that restaurant : http://www.lasalledrivein.com/location.html A lot Fancier than it used to be:
Thanks for reminding of the Lasalle Drive In. Never could remember the name. My husband and I would go there on a regular basis to park and get a fry when we were just courting ha ha. One night he drove me out there in his 1956 Buick Special and gave me a ring and asked me to marry him. That was 41 yrs. ago and we are still together and going out for Fries & Hot Dogs on our dates. Glo
Hi I just looked up the info on the Lasalle Drive In. It sure didn't look anything like that when we went there. I know it is the same place though. We got engaged in May of 1966 and it says that it has been in business since 1967. Maybe it was another owner back then. Thanks for the write up Glo
Glad you looked it up Gloworm138,....Good Memories,... the year may also be the first actual business license (Montrelaer's have been known to be a little lax in the legal dept............hahahahah ..........this shot may be a little more familiar,....However I think I recall it being even smaller than this,... I think this was an early 70's expansion......the new one is only lately,...10years maybe???? DannyB might know, when the new one came into being...............?
Hi Les That's it alright such a romantic place ay. Guess it looked better at night. Thanks for the picture. Glo
Les. I remember that car going into the river, at the restaurant . I think it was some young lady, who "parked" her car, to go get some food, and left her 2 kids inside. After she got out and parked, the car started to roll forward. She tried to stop it, or somehow get the kids out, but could not. She and the 2 kids drowned. What a shame. To this day, I still do not understand WHY there wasn't some sort of a barrier, or logs, or whatever to stop anything rolling into the river. That car was parked on a slope not more than 2 or 3 feet from that fast moving St Lawrence.

Yes I beleive your right Winston,....people held onto the bumper, but just couldn't hold it,...it was also quite a drop off the edge there if you Remember, & the River of course was very Swift,.....I think the barriers were put in immediately after that,.....I also recall that when the divers went in to look for the car & recover the bodies,...they alsi found an old Truck or Bus , someone dumped it in the drink I guess...........
I remember this clearly. I arrived minutes after it happened. They were trying to stop the husband from jumping into the fast moving water. He left the car running and the child standing on the front seat pulled it into gear. The mother sat inside screaming in panic. Men were running beside the car trying to get her to unlock the doors. Others tried to hold it back. One man was crying from frustration, he felt so helpless. Right across from the police station as I recall. Ed
Thanks Ed for clearing that up. Les was right about the husband being there. What a shame. For the sake of a little common sense on the restaurants part, or the parents part. Little lifes were lost.

****************ADAMS*************** Lasalle Blvd ,for sure ,...and I believe one of our members " Aunt worked there,...........They'd let us all hang around (with an order of something of course))...........but what a great escape ,especially during the winter,. (just to get out of the Cold for a while)..................
thats right..it was Adams thanks alot Les was racking my brain trying to remember...They had the best smoked meat anywhere.. We (the gang) used to frequent there often...I see you are also on the Island..
I was there when that incident happened will never forget it...Everyone was stunned and just watched in horror... It sure has changed..Think they'd deliver?
What great memories guys...born in `54, grew up near corner of 1st and Edouard, was no better place to be a kid, remember the restaurant on water side of Alepn St. with its` yellow lights outside, the hot summer nights; smell of vinegar in the air, equally Rocky Beach...was very young...would walk down a lateral trail following the slope to the water...fishing was great everywhere!! Dories Point at end of island, right in rapids...amazing sunrises...other side of abandoned dam...what an adventure!! Would shimmy down the broken sections and walk across railway tie walls(all falling apart)...turbines on right...raging waterfalls on left - roughly 12 sections like this until one reached the last which is where a lot of guys, even the police would chicken out - called the infamous YELLOW THING!!This was the old Seaway...you`d have to climb up a set steel ladder, then shimmy across a 70 foot span of wide flange beam, approx. 60`in the air till finally descending other side - nuts! The other option was crawling down to deep water-right side of dam and run across the logs for about 50` till the island. We`d often take this route as we were carrying fishing-camping equipment...BB guns etc. A least one kid a year would fall and drown cause the logs would close up after you`d slip between! We all fell...were lucky! Spielberg's STAND BY ME was nothing comparatively. We did this daily...would even go under waterfalls at the 2 first sections of dam and net perch in air pocket under the turbines... Indiana Jones HAAA!! And then there was the Aqueduc Canal for pike and musky...just amazing!!!
