Les_F..........I think you should go back, but, ask for some lessons on how to do steamies (all dressed of course) and greasy fries then come back out here and open up a franchise.  I'm absolutely sure it would be a big, big hit.  Or......open up a franchise and have the merchandise shipped out here ready to eat ~ that would probably be even better.  Same day delivery......   .........If Les_F can't do it~~~~no one can   But I have to say pox on you for posting that picture right up there, in our faces.  Shame on you

Les, Don't tell me Delallos is still open. I had an Hamberger there about 30 years ago, complete with red chilli peppers. I bet Mario Lemieux who comes from Ville Emard went there often. Guy

Remember also almost every house in Verdun generally had one of these 'matchstick' holders,..mounted on the wall,....and you would insert on of those Box's of Eddy's Matchs,.....which slid open, and stood upright on the wall & was a dispenser for tthe old good wooden matches,...... As kids we'd take those matches and throw them against the sidewalk ,and if yuou did it right, the match would explode into flame, with a loud crack,... a;lso Reminds me of those things that looked like rockets, but we put 'caps' in them anf threw them in the air to hear them blow when they hit the pavement,..................(sorry' bout that ,two memories in one from a match dispenser.............hahahahaha)

Then just had to throw out the cup part and re-use the base...   Remember Lappo's restaurant on Rielle. they made Coke by first putting in ice,the syrup, carb.water stir and that was it.   Lad

I told him he should have bottled the dressing and sold it. It's to bad they closed after doing all that remodeling back in the early 80's

Les, You are really going back regarding the juke box. Did you ever hang around the Woodland Resto? Come to think of it did Metalman? Or for that matter anyone on this sight? Do you know who owned it before the present owner? It was Tony. He brought Fanny and  (his future wife) over from Greece many years ago. Fanny could not even speak English. That was around 1960 - 1965. I used to go there with my father when I was a kid and Jack owned it. (Can't remember his last name right now.) My favorite thing was Apple Pie - was never an ice cream person.  Now that really brought back memories, can picture myself sitting with my father in White's as it was called back then and also when Tony had it. Thanks for the memory ((MMMMMMMMMMMM)

i loved living in that part of town.
back then woodland restaurant was there, next door was frenchies store.
across woodland was another restaurant, now its a hair salon.
the bus terminal across the street was very busy back then.
the pavilion was there, tennis court, in that building
which was a large restaurant, hotdogs and stuff
on the boardwalk.
my backyard led to egan st.
my childhood on that street will not be forgotten.
every remembrance day they would build a stand
all the vets would march down woodland.
i could write a massive book on woodland and egan
i'll post my grandpa's house and our house
back then my dad sold one for 8k other for 6k
then moved to westend of verdun?
it destroyed me to move, i had my buddies

they had a carpenter wood working shop.
i learned about the table saw etc.

Metalman ,...i Remember thinking the same thing when I had to move to Lasalle,....it seemed like a devasting move,.....and yet it was just one of those inevitable steps forward ,that we all had to make,.... I too played Floor Hockey at Dawson's..................had a ball there alos MrMuir (another Walter) he hired me to work in the pastry shop with Billy ,& Eddy....my brother bought their first delivery van, which was an old Keating Ford parts deliver truck (red/white) I think it was......He's the guy that 'cured ' me of eatig too many sweets,..because when I first started in their,.I would ask Mr Muir ,.if I could have an apple trunover or whatever,....and he told me ,Les Go ahead and have whatever you want casue in two weeks you won't want any of this stuff..........I thought I'd won the lottery.....................................................He Was Right..........hahahahaha The only thing we did always like was the Meat Pies,......but as for sweets,.... No Thanks.............I worked in there when they got rid of the old Baking Oven,...and replaced it with a Huge Oven with maybe 6 or 8 different baking shelves that would rotate around in there like a ferris wheel,...... and it's a good thing that basement can't talk..........hahahahahah Eddy & Billy are in Alberta I believe,...and Mr Muir is in Ontario,.... the shop continues on but with a family member now running it...??? I have an old newspaper article ,that was sent oput to me ,with Eddy on the front page ,..explaining that they were closing up and mmoving...... drinking place on the boardwalk?
the hole was a older crowd, we weren't invited
we all had our groups of verduners

of shelves, a big table in middle of store.
thousands of second hand -shoes, boots
from 5 dollars to 25 dollars +
looks to me there are lots of hard times still in verdun.

Hey Metalman (WK),

Thanks (I guess) for the post of the fire on Bannantyne. Dang, too bad! Like a lot of folks, that block on Bannantyne between Brown and Godin was a real part of growing up for me. Kosta's with the "tseesburgers", standing in front of the ole' Dominion's store with your wagon trying to make some cash for pullling ladies groceries home, etc. etc.

I wonder what will go up in it's place. Condo's?

the reason its the only one in that area for the locals
lets say 50/50 either a condo or grocery store.
hope the insurance company does there part

they were big ones, i think they were in a shape
of a glass.
5 cents for the big popsicle, then cross the street
to watch the girls play softball?
we liked the girls play ball, they were better players
then the guys.

BrownBlvd Ray,   I did that at the Dominion Store with my wagon too. I also delivered for Trenholme Pharmacy corner of Valiquette and Bannantyne by bicycle. All seasons too brrrrrr. I remember the most dreaded delivery to get was out to a nursing home at 9099 Lasalle Blvd - seemed like about 100 miles there and back - NEVER A TIP!!!!!   Gary Mace Saanich, BC   ex 1045 Valiquette / 920 Moffat

brownblvd MSN said...

Hi Gary,

I guess we were part of the same important group in society for those days - the delivery boys. My career advanced when I got hired at Martin's (which was owned and operated by John Manachek at the time) on the corner of Brown and Beurling back in about 1972-73. I delivered groceries on Saturdays through that winter. It seemed that there was a lot of snow, and those heavy bikes - that seemed to be build of iron - could hold 3 or 4 two-fours if you had the right basket on the front, but they didn't plow through the snow very well. That winter seemed pretty frickin' cold too.

A 24 of pints back then was an even 5 bucks, and I think a pack o' smokes was fifty cents, more or less.. A quarter was a reasonable tip, but a buck tip was really something. Another guy that worked there at the time was Darrel Maxwell, who lived on Godin across the lane from me. He was probably 3 or 4 years older than me, but I viewed him as a veteran delivery guy. He worked there pretty steady, and even got one of those leather money pouches, with the brass snap, to wear on his belt. Being a greenhorn, I just had to stuft the change into my pockets.

You are right about some pretty poor tippers. I specifically remember John, the owner, asking me right at closing time (already completely dark outside) one Saturday if I would mind delivering a 24 of Exports to some guy on Woodland. John said that I didn't have to do it 'cause it was closing time anyway, but also said that the guy promised a really good tip. I was tired as hell, but thought "What the heck, its only one more delivery and then I can go watch the hockey game with a nice pizza from Riverview ($1.90 for a small all dressed, back then) and that promised tip would help to pay for. Anyways, I get there through the snow (second story, at that) and the guy didn't even come to the front door. He sent the Mrs. with a fiver: "There you go, son" and "Slam" right in my face. Man, was I steamed!!!

That is the winter I started smoking. It seemed to dull the pain. I was 15 at the time, so I started smoking pretty late in life compared to most of my compadres. Most of them started at 12-14, it seemed. I finally smartened up by 1984 when I quit for good. The reason I bring up smoking while delivering messages is because another clear memory I have of that winter was following a lady in a nice new fur coat from Martin's just down Beurling to where whe lived in one of those cottages like you see lots of in Crawford Park. She had just bought a box of groceries and it was so close, that I didn't need to use the bike. Anyways, I was holding the box of groceries, but had a lit cigarette in my gloved hand. She opened her door to let us in, but then she backed up so that she put out my smoke with the back of her nice fur coat. Holy $hit!! She didn't know what happened, but there was no way I was going to take the fall for this one, so I just stayed quiet. I kind of felt bad because she gave me a reasonable tip as I recall.

Anyways, maybe we remember the bad tippers (or non tippers, I should say), better than we remember the goods ones.

PS Maybe my memory is getting fuzzy, but didn't some folks refer to their groceries as 'messages' for some reason, back then? For example, I remember moms of my friends saying, "Well, I better go get my messages done", as in having to go grocery shopping? I haven't heard that term since leaving Verdun/Montreal. It was probably related to a reminder/message, as in a written list of groceries.

Hi brownblvd,I remember my parents using the term when they had to run some errands, they would say I've got to do my messages.I used to deliver groceries from Steinbergs on Verdun with my wagon and we would ask the customers if they would like us to take their order home. I also ran across cheapskates.

Steinbergs, Dominion Stores, A&P....wagon, sled, tobaggon.... even our bikes in the winter time. Leduc Drug Store on Church and Wellington....7:00pm till 11:00pm, 5 days a week!!!!! Just being a kid and still in grade school out in the ice and snow, skidding all over the place and trying to not get hit by some car... AND yes, ED, you brought that memory back to me, my mother saying she had to run some messages......WOW... Thanks... Winston Allison

info- when you order a extra large pizza at
woodland, they give you a large and small
pizza.
which is good- you keep the small pizza for yourself
you give the large to the 6 buddies to share??

I too workded for Martin's Grocery back then.  Not sure the exact years, but 1971 - 72 - 73 sound about the same time.  Graduated in 73, so not after that.   I did not deliver on the bike as much as others.  I recall working in the store; taking and filling the orders on the phone; driving down with the owner - did not remember his name, so thanks for that - to the supply house for him and loading up his station wagon; delivering with him in the station wagon in the winter; stacking up the cases of beer in the basement of the store through the window - on a metal conveyor roller table.    I also remember working in the back, in the Freezer, where the sides of beef were hanging.  I recall doing some of the cutting, but he did most of it.  As I think of it now, that is probably where I learned most of what I know about cuts of beef and pork!   I also recall his wife worked the cash register up front and his daughter would be there on Saturday and in the summer months.    Well, that is what I remember of Martin's at least for the moment.  I imagine we both worked there at the same time.... Bazooka Gum was good, but I liked Double Bubble better.  Also remember buying Chicklets in a little box with 2 chickets in in.  Thrills were in a purple and yellow box.

mom

back then- you would get in trouble chewing gum in class.
at times the teacher would see you chewing gum in class, then order you to take the gum out of your mouth
and stick it on your forehead or your nose.
others see this they would take there gum
and stcik it under those wooden desks.
i'm sure the school janitor had a job removing all that gum under the desks during the summer holidays.

Sometimes when the teacher caught onto somebody with gum in their mouth, many kids would swallow theirs.  My mom would admonish us not to swallow our gum because "our insides would all get stuck together".  The same with not swallowing our pumpkin or watermelon seeds because pumpkins or watermelons would grow inside us.....yeeccchhhhh.    p.s.   I STILL don't swallow either pumpkin or watermelon seeds, but only because I'm fat enough, don't need those things growing inside me!!!
