Front Page Photo

To many people, especially those not from our hometown, it's just a photo of a back of houses.  But, to me, it's a terrific snapshot of where we used to play . . . on the back galleries, in the sheds, and in the lanes.

Now, that's Verdun!

Thanks for the memories, Cookie,

Jack

I have to agree,.that picture of the lane,(modern day) sure looks a lot nicer than when we were kids,..but We all managed to make the best forts,.and escape spots ,using theose old sheds,.and to get up on to the rooftops, through the hatch at the top of the sheds, was invaluable.....hahahahaha Nothing like playing on the roof with all the electrical wires,...hahahahaha Great Photo,.......the new look really cleans up those lanes,.and allows alot more light into the homes (with no huge sheds) to block the view,.. and the newer aluminum white railings and spiral metal stairs looks way better,..............   but it used to be fun to climb up the balconies ,by shimmy-ing (is that a word..hahahah) up the support posts,....just because they were there....................   Thanks for the Picture,                                      HF&RV

Hi Jack, and glad you enjoyed that photo of the back lane .  Actually it brought an old memory back to me, that exact top flat you see in the photo is where a friend of my Moms whose name was Mrs.Kedgie had fallen down those back winding stairs....how she ever survived that fall was a miracle.  We lived right across the lane from her.  None of us will ever forget those clotheslines and wires hanging all over the place.....today I hardly ever see a clothesline.......   good ole memories,   cookie

Theo, you may enjoy the picture I just uploaded. It was taken in 1950 in the lane behind 750-760 Godin Ave. I am in the car with my grandfather, Cecil Newman standing outside. Wouldn't mind having that car in my garage right now!!   Rgds Ron

Neat old car ,. good keepsake,  it looks like a 1938-ish Ford? many of the models available then looked very similar,.but here's apic of one found on a quick Google search: ........it does look very similar,.............Do you know what model it is?   ..That laneway sure looks wide,.........and pretty clean,.......You lived in the rich part of town........hahahahaha   Great Picture ,Thanks for sharing it.                                                                                                                      HF&RV

Hello,

Can anyone send me the picture of the island in the middle of St.Lawrence
with the homes on it. I know someone posted it before but I can't find it
anywhere. And does anyone have more information about the island I have
always wanted to see it but I don't know anyone who has a house there. Is
the electricity? Does anyone live there year round or is it just a summer home?

Thank you,

Violet

Hello,

Thank you, what I was looking for was a photo shot from the boardwalk. If
you can help that would be great since I am awful with computers.

Thanks again

Wow, Les, the photo transported me back so far in time that I didn't look at it anymore—there are no sheds in the photo!  Except maybe to the left side of the picture.   Cookie, what street did you live on?    Ron, what a great photo of you and your dad in the back lane!  I've always had a preference for black-and-whites. Now I might go way out here for a second, but there always seems to be something mystical about them.   Les, this gives me an idea . . . actually, two of them; but I don't know if it's been done before in Verdun Connections.  First, how about starting a thread of where we all used to live, with photos of the front of the houses, if any.  And second, a thread with old photos of just the back lanes.   Have a good evening, everyone,   Jack

Theo it's a good idea,....and we may have done something like it,.but threads wander at times,.and trying to find some of them again can be a huge task,.also many of the posted pictures may have been removed,.by the suthour,or were linked to webaddress's no longer in existence,....but If you want to start a thread,... I'm sure we can come up with alot of pictures over time,....  Have a look through Our Photo Albums ,.and you may find a lot of old lane pictures,.or people pictures,.....etc etc,.but almost guaranteed to prompt a memory or two.............    ps: I too like B&W's as they seem to 'capture' life in a seemingly more real light.,Which when you think of it ,.does not make any sense,.as we are all living in a world of Colour,...............I think B&W just allows us to put our selves in a somewhat Nostalgic frame of mind,........Most of us saw colour film come into being in our lifetimes,.,,,,,,,,             but there are many people who are now fooling around with digital B&W's again,......as they just seem to be becomming more popular,....   I guess we just prefer as in real life for things to be B&W......(not always the cas3e ,I know).....hahahaha                      Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les, Ron's already started the back-lanes photo album, entitled "Back lanes."  Thanks, Ron.  I'll go through the other photos tomorrow, when I have time.   In Zen art, colour would ruin the simplicity and the spirit of the ink-and-wash-style brush strokes.   Jack

Hello Les,

Do you know how many houses are on Heron Island?

earlcooper1 MSN said...

Hey Violet                  My Aunt/Uncle (Barbara & Leonard Aggett) have had a cottage on Goat's Island (Smaller Island from the aerial picture) for over 35 yrs. Both Herron & Goat Island are actually owned by the Quebec Gov't (Specifically Hydro Quebec) & lease-out the properties to citizens. Both islands are provincially protected bird sanctuaries & have no electrical power. Up to 20yrs ago, Goats island had only 2 working wells (for drinking purposes). Today, many residences have power via portable generators. Of course, the only way to get to both Goats & Herron island is by way of boat. When I lived in Verdun, the only 2 boat clubs were the Verdun Yacht Club (VYC) or the Verdun Motor Boat Club (VMBC).  BTW, how's Kevin doing?   Earl Cooper.

Hi Earl

Kevin is doing well. How is your sister doing I have not seen her for a
very long time.
Thanks for the information about Heron Island I was always curious about
that place.
