Verdun Snow Storms "Remember"

Oh how I remember the old snow storms, can see the snow falling in the street lights , playing in the streets , snow ball fights, making forts, magical it was , building piles of snow to jump into , no way did it bother us , we just had a blast .  Remember the big snow banks , and the men walking with shovels to spread sand on the streets, not sure if we used salt then , tonight we are in for a nice storm, and it makes me feel warm all over , I  did and still love snow storms , tomorrow I shall work at the snow , clearing and cleaning and I shall ENJOY < cause I am an ex Verdunite , how bout you , any memories of snow storms gone by . Jimmy

Jimmy ( kungfu) I Remember those legendary snowfalls too...........loved them,......I know I have pictures around somewhere of some bigtime snowfalls in and around the 68-72 era,.........I will try to find them...............I know the feeling your talking about ,appreciating and feeling kinda 'cool' about a snowstorm,..........or at least a heavy snowfall,........but reality always hits again a day or so later,........the memory's I appreciate,....but you can have my share of dealing with Winter.............( but I have said that if you live in that type of climate,) then you can really 'dig' the snow...................hahahahahahahah

we finally got a snow cover too! shovelled the driveway twice yesterday and twice again today. It's still falling but mostly blowing. Which will give me the pleasure of shovelling the driveway again tomorrow, no doubt. We had our winter carnival in the rain last week so there is a nice layer of ice under the 15cm. Cars and trucks getting stuck, fishtailing, sliding........damn, I LOVE IT! The kids have decided that the pile of snow on the lawn will become a dragon with a luge-like tail and a child eating belly (cave)! Nothing like a great snowfall to fire up the imagination! Too bad they don't get to ambush "the frenchies" around the corner from their fort! We were so blessed!

Well, it is 5:30 am and I should leave soon for work. We already have a strong start to our expected 25-35cm of #$%& (my opinion of snow) and Deux Montagnes to Longueuil is more than a hop, skip, and a jump. "See you tonight"   m.p.u.

Do you remember seeing this blower in Montreal?    Steve

Yes Steve the 3rd picture here is a picture of 4349 Verdun Ave,...(middle of the block 2nd floor) .......this is a picture I took myself in the early 80's I think it was,....As I used to live in that house,....I posted that picture a couple of times,..the original is around here somewhere,..........Guess you must have a lot of back up CD's by now,.or have you switched now to a larger hard drive,......?  the snowblower one too is one of a little more modern snowblower tham we had when we were kids,....those pictures that you posted from near your house (2nd av was it?) ,sure show Winter as it always seem to be in those days,.....Seems we always had several large dumps of snow every Winter, ( at least back then),.....  As for todays threat for Southern Ont. & the St Lawerance Valley area,..it's been lifted and less than half of the predicted fall will actually happen,...( at least according to this mornings weather forecast on the TV national weather channel)

soembody must have a Winter Picture from the mid to late 60's ,..and early 70's,..showing that little army of snow removal equipment,.....those little tank like sidewalk cleaners,..the parade of 5tons,.....and of course the snowblower,....all of Verdun's equipment was dark green with a City Logo in gold (or was it white) painted on the side............must be some of those around somewhere,...... ..now this old baby pre dates some of us,......( who weren't lucky enough to be around to see it yet......) how's that for diplomatic..........hahahahahaha    mind you they kept equipment around for a lot of years,so maybe it was doing it's thing in the 50's ,...but it looks a wee bit older than that...........

Saga Continues:

I'll drag him out and pound him flat! I know that he waits for me to
finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an
hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open
our presents, but I was too busy watching for the goddamn snowplow.

December 25:Merry Christmas! Bah Humbug! 20 more inches of the
!=3Dx&!x!x1 slop tonight. Snowed in!! The idea of shoveling makes my
blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by
asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The
wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to
watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to kill her.

December 26:- Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It
was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27:- Temperature dropped to -50 and the pipes froze, but at
least it is too cold to snow!!!!!!!!
December 28:- Warmed up to above -30, still can't snow any more though.
Still snowed, and the HAG is driving me crazy!!!

December 29:- 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it
could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he
think I am?

December 30:- Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for A
million dollars for the bump on his head. The wife went home to her
mother. 9" predicted.

December 31:- Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8:- I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they
keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

Thanks Bill for the Diary of a snow shoveler. That was great. The more I read the more I laughed. It eventual got so bad I couldn't hardly read with the tears coming down. We are getting just a trace of snow here in Vancouver Washington. BUT we are getting freezing rain. It is just a sheet of ice from Eugene, Oregon, up to  at least Woodland, Washington at this time. Our daughter, son-in-law, and 2 grandkids are suppose to leave for Disneyland tomorrow at 6:30am, W e were going to drive them to the airport, but won't be able to. Also they won't be able to get out of there place. BUMMER. Winston Allison

Hi bubbacut,....either I missed these pics of yours ,..or they just showed up even though the date was Dec 18th.......In any case I cannot guess as to where you took those pictures,...looks like a ski-hill tow line ?

Montreal was only 2.5 cm off a record 1 day snowfall,..back in the 70's ,.....so yes Montreal got a whack of snow,......but to show you how Mother Nature can even the score on the usuall gloating Vancover Islanders,..(Victoria in particular),....back in 1996,...we had  a 2 day total snowfall of 124cm,........and a 24hr. record snowfall of 64.5cm...............combine that with all the hills and the fact that we have (or had ) virtually very little snow removal equipment,............inplain English,.......We got Hammered...........and clean up was fun too........  So we pay our dues occasionally as well.       here's a link to someones account of that snowfall aptly named the "Blizzard of '96"..........apparently it was a once in a 100 year storm,.........    http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/events/vicsnow96.htm        I shovelled my sundeck and driveways quite a few times during that spell,.....but it was cool,............now I hope it doesn't happen again..........hahahahaha
