Is XM available in Canada yet? In the below response I received, Sirius
Radio isn't in Canada. Can't wait for it to be here, I'm tired of
listening to the same songs over and over on AM and most FM stations --
yuk. When the time comes I'll pick XM over Sirius.

We appreciate the time you have taken to inquire about the availability
of SIRIUS in Hawaii. At the present time SIRIUS service is only
available in the contiguous United States. Our current FCC license does
not allow for broadcast outside of that area or in other countries. As
always, sirius.com will feature the latest information regarding our
broadcast area.

Dzldawg, Do you have to have an Americam address,..or is available with a Canadian address now,..a friend of mine has had it for quite awhile now,..and loves it,...He can travel with it,.or take it to the lake ,.and not have to worry about the normal reception problems of normal radio broadcasts,......seems like a neat thing if your in the boonies,.but I think there's enough stations on the air,.that are available all the time ,....but for continous no ads,.and being able to select any type of genre of music,...it seems like a good alternative, Remember we had a problem with satellite signals ,.if you had a US. address you got lots of channels with no problems,.but they've since made it difficult to get updates cards....(unless you pay,of course......hahahah)
Canada will get satellite reception long before Hawaii will.

Expedition. They all come with Satellite radio installed, but it isn't
much of a selling point.
Btw Howard Stern is on Sirius Radio, and that is why I'd prefer XM. Did
you know he is the highest payed performer in the world now, and for a
radio jock? He's payed more than Oprah Winfrey now, with a 5 year
contract.
To get satellite radio, consumers can buy the hardware or a product
such as a car that comes with it pre-installed.
Sirius, with more than 600,000 subscribers, then charges $12.95 a month
for access to 120 channels. XM subscribers, now numbering more than 2
million, pay $9.99 a month for about 120 channels and an additional
$1.99 for the "Opie and Anthony" show.

Both XM and Sirius are placing big ads here in Toronto. I doubt if I'll go for either at this point. With the glut of "reality" shows (if that's reality, I'll pass) , etc on TV, I guess I'm not surprised to hear that Stern is the highest paid.

I like talk radio because people call in and I get to hear many views
of various topic I am interested in. Views I cannot discuss elsewhere...
I tuned in to XM's 'Ogie and Anthony' on there web site last night.

Hey Les F, the units became availible in Canada in December and range in channels from 80 to 100 depending who you subscribe with, they are availible at most places that sell car stereos in kits that retransmit to your regular FM receiver, all you have to do is call a number or go to a web site to activate (for a fee of course) to get started, I'm just wondering how they will do on these mountain backroads, a few miles in and all you get is dead air, it would be great to listen to something while bouncing around
Thanks Dzldawg,....I know what you mean,.you get on the logging roads ( or off them) ,and not much works out there,.....this is still a fairly wild country,BC ,......as I mentioned a freind of mine has one ,and it works throughout the island here,.and he has a cabin off road,...but still gets reception,....but behind that Coastal Range ,I wonder .....I guess you roll that truck of yours to some remote spots ,.over there,.....I'would guess the logging camps & fishing camps ,.would be right on the list to get one if they work OK,......I'll check around .......

I think the Forbes lists Big O's annual income at 225million,........,that's alot of cabbage,........and she's been paid already,..if satellite radio does 'fly' so to speak,.then old Howard will be getting a lot of Do-Re-me,....for sure,.......,Let's face it He's in the Chips,........and I would think if your making a Half Million a year,.....then all the rest is just pure 'gravy'.............. hammmmmm with all the ingredients mentioned in this post,....maybe it should have been printed in the Recipe section.......

Church Avenue in Verdun ,...if your interested in satellite radio,..... ..Seems to be popping up evewryhwere,........but unless you live in an area where normal reception is not good,..I don't see a great need for paying for radio,.I understand you can select the genre of music ,or programming you like,..but there is enough programming on the air for 'Free' ,...or you can have your whole music collection with you via different media players,just in MP3 ,or Midi files ,.you can caryy one hell of a lot of music or download movies etc ec.....paying a monthly fee to listen to radio very sporatically,doesn't really have that much appeal, not to mention all the access you have to any type of information,via the internet as well. But there is always a market,..the good side of having say Howard Stern on satellite,.is it gets him off the normal radio waves.......I have rarely listened to Howard, on free radio,....so paying for him ,will not happen,for me........thanks Howard, saving me 15/bucks a month,.that I can reduce my high speed interenet bill by,.......hahahahaha

XM radio is advertised here on free radio every day, and yet it not
available. Frustrating. I live about 5 minutes from the surf site
'Pipeline' on the north shore of Oahu. I get one AM and one FM station
and reception is questionable.
looks like Schwarzenegger denies clemency for 'Tookie' Williams. He'll

les you have to wonder. you have to question, how much time do we actually spend listening to the radio. we are a society of excess, and it seems people will buy it just because it's exists. long live free radio, or does this mean that 'free' radio is about to become exstinct.
How about cable TV? HBO etc. Personally I do not watch television, pay
channels or the free ones. It's a matter of taste I think. Well I think
we milked this thread enough.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents regarding satellite radio. We have 3
subscribers in our family. 2 XM & 1 Sirius. Everyone seems caught up in
Stern's contract and subsequent radio show, but it is so much more. I used to
listen to Howard, but got tired of the same shtick day in & day out. My
preference is XM, but Sirius is also pretty good. Depending what I am in the
mood for, there is a channel playing exactly that. There are individual channels
dedicated to the 40's. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's. There is no
repetition either unless you are on a "Top 40" format channel. I can have heavy
metal and change to Hank's Place for traditional country, etc.. If I am in the
mood for comedy, they have that too. The "Adult Comedy" channels are identified
too so there is no mistaking what you are tuning in for. There are also multiple
channels for all the different formats of talk radio and sports. The best
part is the lack of commercials on most channels. I love it and hardly listen to
AM or FM anymore.
I guess the best comparison would be to television and I don't think there
are too many who are completely satisfied with just the air channels and do not
have cable or satellite boxes.
Nothing stays the same for very long, but when you do notice a time when
there are no new innovations, that will be the time for concern!

Hi Sandy, One time back in the eighties a friend & myself were stuck in traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike. We were listening to Howard Stern on the radio. My friend noticed that all the other cars also had Howard on. We sat there in the traffic and got a big kick out of watching everyone else in the other cars laugh as Howard said something funny. Like the Rockettes kick up their feet at the same time, everyone in every car laughed at exactly the same time. A howard moment. Howard sure has a huge audience-Walter

Hi Sandy, I am not going to get satellite radio. There are still a lot of good shows on regular free radio. Tom Leykis http://www.blowmeuptom.com & Canadian Phil Hendrie http://www.PhilHendrieShow.com . It seems to me that when I was a kid that we had to pay for a license to listen to radio in Canada. Hey Les,
Today (Friday) is Howard Stern's last broadcast on conventional
radio. Over the years, I have enjoyed Howard and also have gotten tired of
some of the repetition, especially this last while where all he seems
to talk about is his move to Sirius. I am looking forward to his
replacement here in Boston on WBCN. Starting in January, we will have David Lee
Roth, formerly of Van Halen, as the morning man. Should be great!

willing to be humiliated in order to get some television exposure. They
convinced her to drop her drawers and bend over, while a couple of the
regulars spanked her with putrified fish. She managed somehow to sing
her composition while the Stern team fell over themselves laughing.

Exciting times in communications. Cell phones for instance amazes me
still. I received a call while driving in the Pali tunnel through the
mountain, from a friend doing 80 on the freeway in San Diego
California, and reception was like he was in the back seat. I also use
Gorilla Mobile which enables me to talk via cell phone cheaply to
cousins in the UK.
XM will eventually arrive here, and probably available on cell phones
in the not too distant future. XM also has smut, but it's optional and
only available for an extra 4 dollars a month. Broadcast sports, talk
radio and commercial free music are the draws for me.
