Old "yuumy" favorites

I was listening to a talk show CFRB (Toronto), the discussion was about what do you remember as a favorite yummy food that your mother used to make or buy when you were a kid, it could be baked good or a meal. (The mothers called in too saying what they used to make that the kids loved). One person called in saying his mother used to make rice crispie squares with cheeze whiz spread on top, (yuk), another one said they loved a peanut buttery/jam/ banana loaf.
What I remember was sometimes when my mother went downtown, she would come back with this pie/cake from Kresgies or Woolworth's, she said they called it Boston Cream Pie, but it wasn't a true Boston Cream, it had no chocolate. It was to die for, melt in your mouth and light as a feather. It was like a light sponge cake with a light whipped cream in between & on top, (I think).  I'd love to make one if I knew what was in it. Does anyone remember ever having this kind of pie/cake?
What were some of your favorites as kid in Verdun?  Another favorite of mine was Hamburger Roll-ups.

Have a yummy day !

Griffintown Plane Crash April 25th 1944

Here is an article from the Gazette regarding the 4 engine Royal Air Force Liberator that had left Dorval and was heading for England and crashed in Griffintown on April 25th 1944. There must be photos around and maybe Les can come up with some of them. The subject came up a while back and was stored in my memory.

A man in the Florida supermarket tries to buy half a head of lettuce. The
very young produce assistant tells him that they sell only whole heads of
lettuce.

The man persists and asks to see the manager.

The boy says he'll ask his manager about it.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, 'Some asshole wants
to buy half a head of lettuce.' As he finished his sentence, he turned to
find the man standing right behind him, so he added, 'And this gentleman
has kindly offered to buy the other half.'

The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.

Later the manager said to the boy, 'I was impressed with the way you got
yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their
feet here. Where are you from, son?

'Canada, sir, eh?' the boy replied.

'Well, why did you leave Canada?' the manager asked.

The boy said, 'Sir, there's nothing but whores and hockey players up there.'

'Really?' said the manager. 'My wife is from Canada.'

'No shit?' replied the boy. 'Who'd she play for?'

Logging Ddown the Lachine Rapids

This is the way logs where transported in the past using the waterways from the Hull area through the Outaouais river, Lac des Deux Montagnes, Rivi챔res des Prairies and from Kingston, Lac St Louis and St Lawrence river to Quebec city where the logs where loaded on ships then to England who needed these logs for shipbuilding as France had blockaded access to Europe in the beginning of the 19th century. The men who handled these log rafts where called "Cageux". These log trains also used the Lachine Rapids as shown on the photos, therefore passed in front of Verdun. This method of transportation ended in the beginning of the 20th century. Another reminder of our rich historical past.

rotten verdun landlords

gee this could be a major discussion!
The worst landlord I had in verdun was a guy called Mr Sabia...he advertised his flats as Modern or "Non Modern"...his own home had huge casts of lions at the gates of his "palace" yet he rented out some horrid places...in Kingston there is a report which comes out each year warning the incoming Queens U students  regarding awful landlords...just wondered if anyone here had a terrible landlord (don't have to mention names I guess) or a great one.

Johnnies on Argyle

We used to call the tiny store "Dirty Johnies" place-it was a wee candy store on Argyle near Bannantyne...it always smelled bad but Big Johnny was always great to us kids...he had Tools,Mojos,Dots (those weird strips of waxed paper with candy "dots" on them to lick off of the waxed paper) and those always gross wax cigars with koolaid in them...green leaves and black babies as they were called...none in packages...but you count get a good batch of candy for 10 cents back then in the 60's!!!Anyone remember that very small store?

CHECKMATE

..............Bobby Fisher ,  'checks' out.....only 64 years old:

Chess master Bobby Fischer dies

Reykajvik, Iceland (Sports Network) - U.S. chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer died of kidney failure on Thursday. He was 64 years old.

Fischer was universally regarded as the greatest chess player in U.S. history and was a prodigy from an early age. The Chicago native became U.S. junior champion at 13, U.S. Open champion at 14 and the youngest grandmaster in history at 15 years old, until his record was broken by Judit Polgar in 1991.

Fischer was also given credit for elevating chess to a new level of popularity thanks to a televised 1972 World Championship match against Russian Boris Spassky in Iceland. The match, which Fisher won, became a metaphor for the Cold War, and launched Fischer into the American lexicon.

Fischer eventually forfeited his world title in 1975, when he failed to defend it against another Russian, Anatoly Karpov. He resurfaced in 1992 when he played an exhibition rematch against Spassky in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and downed the Russian again, earning over $3 million dollars.

The match defied U.S. sanctions against the former Yugoslavia, however, and Fisher spent the next decade as a reclusive figure regarded as a fugitive by American authorities.

In recent years, Fischer became better known for his criticism of the United States and venomous anti-Semitism. Fischer called the September 11, 2002 terrorist attacks on America "wonderful news" on a Philippines radio station and believed his enemies were all of Jewish descent.

Fischer lived the last few years of his life in Iceland after being granted citizenship in 2005.

The Generation Gap 40th. Anniversary Reunion July 19th. 2008

Hi I have all the info and pictures for the different genesis of the Generation Gap starting off with the original band named the Gnomes featuring Danny Beck, Brent Meldrum, John Frainetti, Mike and Kevin Gauld and myself, Dave McAuliffe. The name was changed to the Kotics but that's a story that only Robin Williams could explain with some justice so we changed the name to The Generation Gap. The line-up changed with the addition of Charlie Clark, Kirby Edgel, Alex Bielajew, John and myself. Although we did have a sax and horn players in the band this did not last long. Played at various venues around Quebec, Ontario, new York and Vermont. Were the headliners at the 1968 Verdun Winter Carnival and played the Youth Pavillion at Man and His World. The Last time the band played togerher was in 1969 at Angrion Park with the line-up of John, Alex, Kevin, Mike and myself. Now for the good stuff. The band is planning a Verdun Reunion 40th. Anniversary get together in July of 2008. It will be a 60's theme reunion and to quote Mike G. it will be a "come as you were" party. You can get more info when you contact me at generationgap@hotmail.com So spread the word and hope to see you all there.

HDTV Obligatory by 31 ugust 1911

HDTV will be obligatory by february 17th 2009 in the US and by the 31st of August 2011 in Canada. The results will be that millions of analogical TVs will be discarded creating a serious environmental problem despite the fact that they can be recycled.
However, a decoder will be available to convert your analogical TV to HD but my bet is that many people will prefer changing their TV to a flat up to date HD model. Already, the old thick analogival TVs and monitors are being replaced by the new flat ACL and Plasma TVs compounding the environmental problem. Using myself as an example, I just replaced my 17 inch thick computer monitor with a 24 inch ACL flat monitor so I have to find a relative to unload my old perfectly good monitor.

West Jet

You gotta love the Canadian sense of humour. West Jet is an airline
with head office situated in Calgary, Alberta.

West Jet airline attendants make an effort to make the in-flight
"safety lecture" and announcements a bit more entertaining. Here are
some real examples that have been heard or reported:

On a West Jet flight (There is no assigned seating, you just sit where
you want) passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing, when
a flight attendant announced, "People, people we're not picking out
furniture here, find a seat and get in it!"

On another West Jet Flight with a very "senior" flight attendant crew,
the pilot said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached cruising altitude
and will be turning down the cabin lights. This is for your comfort
and to enhance the appearance of your flight attendants."

On landing, the stewardess said, "Please be sure to take all of your
belongings. If you're going to leave anything, please make sure it's
something we'd like to have."

"There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways
out of this airplane."

"Thank you for flying West Jet Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us
the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."

As the plane landed and was coming to a stop at the Vancouver Airport,
a lone voice came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. Whoa!"

After a particularly rough landing during thunderstorms in Ontario, a
flight attendant on a West Jet flight announced, "Please take care
when opening the overhead compartments because, after a landing like
that, sure as hell everything has shifted."

From a West Jet Airlines employee: "Welcome aboard West Jet Flight 245
to Calgary. To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab into the
buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt; and,
if you don't know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in
public unsupervised."

"In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend
from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your
face. If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask
before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with more than one
small child, pick your favourite."

"Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but
we'll try to have them fixed before we arrive. Thank you, and
remember, nobody loves you, or your money, more than West Jet
Airlines."

"Your seat cushions can be used for flotation; and in the event of an
emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with our
compliments."

"As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings.
Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight
attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses."

And from the pilot during his welcome message: "West Jet Airlines is
pleased to announce that we have some of the best flight attendants in
the industry. Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!"

Heard on West Jet Airlines just after a very hard landing in Edmonton:
the flight attendant came on the intercom and said, "That was quite a
bump, and I know what y'all are thinking. I'm here to tell you it
wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the
flight attendant's fault, it was the asphalt"

Overheard on a West Jet Airlines flight into Regina, on a particularly
windy and bumpy day: During the final approach, the Captain was really
having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the Flight
Attendant said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Regina. Please
remain in your seats with your seat belts fastened while the Captain
taxis what's left of our airplane to the gate!"

Another flight attendant's comment on a less than perfect landing: "We
ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the
terminal."

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered
his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which
required the first officer to stand at the door while the Passengers
exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline." He
said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the
passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart
comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady
walking with a cane. She said, "Sir, do you mind if I ask you a
question?" "Why, no, Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it?" The little
old lady said, "Did we land, or were we shot down?"

After a real crusher of a landing in Halifax, the attendant came on
with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Captain
Crash and the Crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt
against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning
bells are silenced, we will open the door and you can pick your way
through the wreckage to the terminal."

Part of a flight attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank
you folks for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the
insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal
tube, we hope you'll think of West Jet Airways."

Heard on a West Jet Airline flight. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you wish
to smoke, the smoking section on this airplane is on the wing. If you
can light 'em, you can smoke 'em."

A plane was taking off from the Winnipeg Airport. After it reached a
comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over
the intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain
speaking.Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from Winnipeg to
Montreal. The weather ahead is good and, therefore, we should have a
smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax... Oh, My God!"
Silence followed, and after a few minutes, the captain came back on
the intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I
scared you earlier. While I was talking to you, the flight attendant
accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the
front of my pants!"

A passenger in Coach yelled, "That's nothing. You should see the back of
mine!

Thank you all

All I originally come from the Point, I spent a lot of time in Verdun with my cousins the Meehans, going to the Nat, the Verdun Auditorium, shopping along Wellington with my Mom and Nan at Christmas (my Mom loved the milk shakes from Woolworths) - buying the different "pieces" of choco bars at that candy store and the fabulous cake store (Moira's or something like that) on the one of the corners before you got to Church. Went to Verdun High and used to hang around at that little restaurant down the street from the school run by these little french sisters - always had the french fries with gravy. Now that I am in Ottawa, I have this site and the Point site to "reminisce" on. Superb.  Sherry (Duplessis) Hummell
