Here are photos of the Woodland Restaurant and their owners from our SHGV archives. Judging from past VC members comments this is a Verdun institution wich seems to bring back fond memories.

Les, The article on the Woodland Restaurant was in a City of Verdun year 2000 publication commemorating the City's 125th anniversary of the founding of the city. If you do make a visit to Verdun, let me know so that we can arrange a tour of our library and archives. In the meantime, here is a photo of a section of our library. Those bars in the rear are from the old prison when the police station was on Church Street. Guy
Johnny Light's family owned Stillwells in the 50's and 60's. He was a grad of VHS, around 1961, and we lost track in the 70's after I left the province. Anyone with knowledge of him?

hi. i go to Stillwells everytime i am in montreal. They are around the corner from my dad on Bishop Power.. no other candy like it in the world. They seem to keep their own hours and sometimes you have to make 2 trips to catch them but it is well worth it. but this was about Woodland restaurant.. used to go there often and always enjoyed the cheeseburgers and coke.. regards jd
Two of my sisters worked for Stillwells over the years,.& I think I heard that Johnny Light had passed away??? Years ago. hf&rv

John Light passed away many years ago. His younger sister Connie and her husband now run Stillwells in Lasalle. When the store was on Wellington they used coal to heat the ingredients for the humbugs. When the store moved to Lasalle they had to change to natural gas. This posed a problem because coal burns hotter than natural gas. They solved it some how and the recipe is still a family secret. Peter B.

Hi, I went to Stillwells also when I recently went home and bought lollipop humbugs, which I'd never seen before, for my dad and cherry humbugs for my kids. They were gone in about 1hr. I guess I got lucky they were open, I was told they kind of make their own hours. Wendy
