Rules (sorry, in every game there are rules):
Start with the letter "A". Write down the first thing that pops into your head that relates to Verdun (directly or through your Verdun upbringing).
The next reply must use the letter "B", then "C" and so on.
Some letters will test our memories and imaginations, some will be a stretch.
You can expand on your word or just write the single word.
Begin the message with the letter and a dash.
How far can we go? How long will it take?

Sorry to jump back a letter or two,.but I wonder if Quinn Farm ,is related to the name QuinnLane,......rins Btwn Gordon Avenue,.& Rielle on the North Side of Verdun Avenue..................... one of only two lanes which actually had a name (at least I think it's only two),.....and I believe one of Our (VerdunConnection ) members was related to the Quinn family, somehow,,,, I have a vaque recollection of them being someone that Chuck Catto knew, Jimmy ( Kungfu) you were Chuck's friend ,Would you know who the member was?? Have Fun and Remember Verdun
X- Verdunites(ers) are what t's all about
YMCA on Gordon & then on Lasalle ............and really far back on Wellington
I dont now Chuck I lived on Gordon ave for 20 years dont rember the lane having a name I do rember the autobody repair shop blowing up at that lane you are talking about
Z best place to be from Verdun of Course Have fun & Remember Verdun
Do we have to start over again
The lane not only Has a Name,.....(and it's Quinn Lane),.but it also has or at least had actual address's in that lane,.... I lived beside the olf Guardian Newspaper office,.later the Messanger,.then Mackasey's eventually took it over before there spot on Verdun near Egan there was an autobody shop in there too,.......I played in those lanes,..and knew all the escape routes from the old Lumber Yard at the head of the lane Btwn Gordon & Rielle Paul Figueroa's back yard was off the Rielle side,.......and we used to beat the Lumber Yard Dog across the yard,.from Under the fence on Gordon,.then a 'beeline' to the scramble up & over the piles of Lumber (which had the biggest spiders you ever want to see..............at least at that age........hahahahahha)............ and then out & over the back fence into the lane,............ Thes were our childhood playing fields (circa early 60's) HF&RV
I lived at 399 gordon in the 70s 80s walked to bannantyne school and back every day and never noted the lane had a name must have had my eyes closed what was in the lane that had a address
See the gallery in the middle with the 3 doors,..the far one was mine, and running Parallel to Verdun Btwn Rielle (on your left) & ( Gordon on your right) ........ran Quinn Lane It's Twoo I Tell Ya ,.It's Twoo........................hahahahahha HF&RV
yep right across the street was a candy store and laundrymat and a lane way
A couple of house on one side (N) ...and an autobody type shop right below my back gallery,...to which I know I' have an old picture somewhere, and I'll scan it and post it) the picture is of my back gallery & not the body shop (otherthan it's roof)................ Willibrord's School was right on the corner of Verdun & Rielle,,,,,(long since Gone by the 80's that you mention.,......but it was there that's what's neat about reviving or reliving certain days Gone by for anyof us in Verdun,..........the City's always changing ,..and the pictures & history will be all that's left ,so any input about Our old stomping grounds is imoprtant,....so post those old pics from any era,.and tell your life experiences from then,...and everyone (mostly) will appreciate the memories,.......................beats Rememberring the mundane political crap. hahahahahhahaha HF&RV
len_beast1,./..................That's absolutley right ,..One of the few lanes that ran perpendicular to Verdun Ave,.......I walked that lane many days ,.. there was a store called Paul's at one point (Rielle Side of the lane) ,.and a Dry Cleaner & Greek Restaurant that shared the same doorway on the Gordon side of the lane)...............Good recall len ........Thanks for the Input Have Fun & Remember Verdun
I got some pics someware i should find them and port a few Form playing hockey at willibroad park and remberance day at the city hall all I need is the time to find them so much to do so little time
I should also look at what I type before I push the send button need a spell check to warn me before I send stuff
Yep and for the longest time there was a vacant lot with a billboard on the cornner
Sounds good len,.........at least you'll be having the thought in the back of your mind,.........and i hear you on the so little time,.......but really ,.....we all have to make time to contribute ,.cause one day we run out of time ,..and are suddennly left with the 'I woulda ,.shoulda ,coulda' syndrome I've often used the example ,when I was teaching sales,.etc,...that there are far too many People living on 'Someday Isle' it must be a really crowded island,.......for sometimes the things we think are really important ,.turn ou to be the really insignificant stuff,........& we sometime forget to do the really simple stuff ,.that might be (in time ) more important).............Who Knows but I'd bet there 's a few people's minds that we wish we could access ,from time time,..but we didn't ,.and now those folks are gone......So If you've got some neat old photot's (and there all neat old photo's),..then i hope we get to see 'em................... HF&RV
A - Auditorium Wrestling on Saturday nights!
B -Banantyne school
Len...............that'sd hilarious,.........DannyB (one of our members) & I and a few other friends,..used to climb the Billboard at the back ,...and watch all the people walking along,................I think we may have had a smoke or two up there as well.......................hahahahahahah and just across the street (Rielle ) same side was a Champlain Gas Station..........and across the lane (again on Rielle) was an Epicierie (Remember when they were called that insead of a 'Depanneaur'....................anyways the dump sold beer & cigs.....(very important in those days)..................... Good Memory Prompt HF&RV
SPELL CHECK DEFINETLY NEEDED No More so than in most of my Posts...............................hahahahahahahha HF&RV

Your close but Quinn Lane was Btwn Rielle & Gordon,..........the lane behind Willbrord School,...was a bit of a weird one ,in that it had a strange cement rise in the center where it rose up to ,what can only be called a 'loading dock' level at the middle where the center lane was ( that is the lane that rand straight away from the dead center of the school, towards Bannantyne .....(not reaching Bannantyne of course)....... it had large parallell lines across it ,making riding a buike a bit bumpy over it,.... if you were daredevil enough to risk wrecking your bikes front wheel,....then you could easily jump/fly off it,..to escape down the lane that ran Btwn Rielle & Willibrord.........but Quin Ln,..was behind Our house one block over Btwn Rielle & Gordon.....................
Maybe they moved? Edith and Steven had an Aunt that was only a couple of years older than Edith, Marylin. Maybe it was her family that lived in your neighbourhood? In the Lovell's directory....1966-67...it has Alf Jarvis at 380 Gordon and Earl Jones at 401

H ... Halloween. Remember asking for Charity door to door with our brown paper bags? That custom must go back to the middle ages huh. Just kidding. 2nd Avenue kids never had any elaborate costumes, mostly painted faces. My big concern back in the 40s and 50s was to stay as far away as possible from the older boys, who had a habit of ripping us little ones off. There were teenagers who looked like men to me using pillow cases for their stash. I usually ate more than any normal kid I think. Good fun over all though.

I can't wait to get some messages from other

Hi just a question here..............Where was K-Mart or Lafleur Hot Dog in Verdun.( in the 60's ) I know & have had a pile of Steamies at Lafleur's in the late 90's(at a Verdun Location on Wellington)......................but still can't think of where ther might have been a K-Mart ever in Verdun......................... HF&RV
P outine,.................funny thing is I never ,ever,Remember having anything called Poutine,....(at least not in the late 60's & 70's).........it was certainly not as wide spread as it is today,..................... HF&RV
Les, sometimes, it is a s-t-r-e-t-c-h, K-mart was a short bus trip from Verdun, wasn't it? Have you got something for Q again? Next time I will insist on only 1 item per letter so they don't get all used up on us, if you have more, you have to wait til the next round.
Sorry MaggieMck,...can't tell you here, cause then i'd use them all up.......hahahahahha K-Mart wasn't a stretch,................. ( it Wasn't in Verdun)...................................was it? hahahahhahaha I'll be Quiet now...............................................was that my Q to respond hahahhahahah ,............................a and your right sometimes (it's) a stretch............................Yikes
Oh Btw: a 'short bus trip; from Verdun/Montreal,....was also known as the Saturday Morning Abortion Express,..............................my brother drove this MurrayHill Bus to the States ,...........for quite awhile,.........until Cananda changed it's laws......................and suddenly agreed with DrMorgantyler .........................................but that's another story.............................hahahaha Just keeping in touch with a Short Bus Trip from Verdun HF&RV
I just read the rules of the alphabet game again and I do not see anywhere that we had to remember things about Verdun only from the 60's and 70's...my mistake if I am reading the rules wrong!
Q - Quitcherbellyachin! a phrase heard often by those of Irish descent. You're right HappyDi. I was trying to keep it a simple game, too many rules makes it more complicated than fun. Verdun, as it is, was or always shall be......(hmmmmm sounds almost religious) Was there a K-Mart in LaSalle in the 70's? maybe around Bishop Power?
Queen Elizabeth Park - in Crawford Park
Maggie.. there was a Kresge's store on Wellington.....not sure if that is spelled correctly....and I believe Kmart and Kresge's were basically the same or had the same owners........so I guess it is a bit of a stretch...hahahaha!!.....but it is fun remembering all the places we once knew and frequented when we lived there and also visit on our trips back! Dianne
Now I am beginning to have doubts...call it old timers disease...was there a Kresge's on Wellington or was there only a Woolworth's?....
Kresgees changed with the times and got away from the 5 and dime junk store and became Kmart. I believe that took place in the 60's.
Puzzles, trivia teasers, word scrambles and more. Play for your chance to win!
Hi Winston...I knew someone on VC would have the answer!...Thanks!!!....I remember the Kresge's on St. Catherine street, my mom would take me there for a fountain coke when ever we'd go to Eaton's.......wonderful memories of a wonderful era!!! ...the 50's!!!!
I would think Lovell's would give us the answer to what the name of the store was on Wellington......as we haven't seen a picture of the old store yet,.. I've heard Kresge's, then United Stores five & dime,....etc etc ....... it would be great to find a picture,.or scan a page from Lovell's I really can't be sure about the name,..............Yikes memory being selective again HF&RV I would think a search of very early 60's......may come up with the answer? I wonder what is in t's place nowadays...........A Dollar Store would be appropriate as the old 5-10-&15 cents stores were really a forerunner to the present day dollar stores
Dianne. Just a little more info on Kmart. They went bankrupt a few years ago. Sears also was going under. Someone decided to buy Sears and started to make a go of it, and then when Kmart went bankrupt, and the shareholders lost everything, the guy that bought Sears, bought Kmart. If you are in Kmart, you will notice they are selling Sears brand appliances.
Now you can see trouble…before he arrives

Sandy I trashed nosite ,.but take comic relief in the fact that ,at many times in the past ,many people took exception to whatever happennings were going on onMSN,.regardlless of whatever efforts we made to find out what did happen,.......or took exception with whatever topic may have been removed ,due to content,......most of which also had input from myself,..So I always laugh that when some whinners take exception,.or try to find blame with others ,that it's considered,censorship,..but when they & a few did decide to 'stamp their feet' & start their own thing,.( which Btw: is a good thing)..................& other sites were spawned via this one,.....which we feel relativeely proud that this intial site, could be the springboard for a few others is indeed rather flaterring...............MSN has tens of thousands of sites,.varying greatly in content ,.....which also is ( good thing )..........So no axe to grind here,.and ,personally don't care how many others are out there,.but certainly glad you decided to stop by here first,..Where as you know ,we appreciate ,the chance to make those Connections ,.........& reminice about Verdun,................ but Thanks for your constant worry ,.....................hahahahahahaha and I haven't an idea where or what your site is called...... K - Kosta's, pizza, pizza, pizza. It's seems that every Pizza place in Verdun knew how to make it "the best". I type this as I nibble on a cold Pizza (morning after) from "Mr. Ribs". Edible, but just not the same as a Verdun Pizza!
Maggie when I left Verdun in 1959 there were no pizzas. I discovered pizza in N.Y. while on leave from navy basic training.
Shazam!
Bill
I have always wondered if "our" pizzas really were "the best" or is it simply what we were accustomed to. Bill, have you ever had a Verdun Pizza and does it compare to "your" new York Pizzas?
L - Labelle BBQ on Wellington. Maggie, I think the pizza's sauce was a lot different and just all together just the best. The bun in the middle made it different too and they had a better aroma . I haven't had one to compare yet. By the way, someone mentioned that "A" was missing, & then I added in "B". Wasn't A for auditorium before my B? Oh well, no worries! Take care all, Carole
M - Man and His World! The party continues! When did the pavilions close down? Carole - Auditorium was in one of the previous rounds, no problem though, this is just for fun and to stir up ideas.
Sorry Maggie I never had the pleasure. I'll be in Verdun in October so I'll be sure to give pizza the taste test.
Can you do me a favor and add a thread entitled 'Food'. I tried and cannot.
