The Alphabet Game

Rules (sorry, in every game there are rules):
Start with the letter "A". Write down the first thing that pops into your head that relates to Verdun (directly or through your Verdun upbringing).
The next reply must use the letter "B", then "C" and so on.
Some letters will test our memories and imaginations, some will be a stretch.
You can expand on your word or just write the single word.
Begin the message with the letter and a dash.
How far can we go? How long will it take?

Sorry to jump back a letter or two,.but I wonder if Quinn Farm ,is related to the name QuinnLane,......rins Btwn Gordon Avenue,.& Rielle on the North Side of Verdun Avenue..................... one of only two lanes which actually had a name (at least I think it's only two),.....and I believe one of Our (VerdunConnection ) members was related to the Quinn family, somehow,,,, I have a vaque recollection of them being someone that Chuck Catto knew, Jimmy ( Kungfu)  you were Chuck's friend ,Would you know who the member was??                                                                   Have Fun and Remember Verdun

The lane not only Has a Name,.....(and it's Quinn Lane),.but it also has or at least had actual address's in that lane,.... I lived beside the olf Guardian Newspaper office,.later the Messanger,.then Mackasey's eventually took it over before there spot on Verdun near Egan there was an autobody shop in there too,.......I played in those lanes,..and knew all the escape routes from the old Lumber Yard at the head of the lane Btwn Gordon & Rielle Paul Figueroa's back yard was off the Rielle side,.......and we used to beat the Lumber Yard Dog across the yard,.from Under the fence on Gordon,.then a 'beeline' to the scramble up & over the piles of Lumber (which had the biggest spiders you ever want to see..............at least at that age........hahahahahha)............  and then out & over the back fence into the lane,............  Thes were our childhood playing fields (circa early 60's)                                                         HF&RV

len_beast1 MSN said...

Your close but Quinn Lane was Btwn Rielle & Gordon,..........the lane behind Willbrord School,...was a bit of a weird one ,in that it had a strange cement rise in the center where it rose up to ,what can only be called a 'loading dock' level at the middle where the center lane was ( that is the lane that rand straight away from the dead center of the school, towards Bannantyne .....(not reaching Bannantyne of course).......  it had large parallell lines across it ,making riding a buike a bit bumpy over it,.... if you were daredevil enough to risk wrecking your bikes front wheel,....then you could easily jump/fly off it,..to escape down the lane that ran Btwn Rielle & Willibrord.........but Quin Ln,..was behind Our house one block over Btwn Rielle & Gordon.....................

Just kidding. 2nd Avenue kids never had any elaborate costumes, mostly painted faces. My big concern back in the 40s and 50s was to stay as far away as possible from the older boys, who had a habit of ripping us little ones off. There were teenagers who looked like men to me using pillow cases for their stash. I usually ate more than any normal kid I think. Good fun over all though.

Maggie.. there was a Kresge's store on Wellington.....not sure if that is spelled correctly....and I believe Kmart and Kresge's were basically the same or had the same owners........so I guess it is a bit of a stretch...hahahaha!!.....but it is fun remembering all the places we once knew and frequented when we lived there and also visit on our trips back!   Dianne

happydi2 MSN said...

Now I am beginning to have doubts...call it old timers disease...was there a Kresge's on Wellington or was there only a Woolworth's?....

Kresgees changed with the times and got away from the 5 and dime junk store and became Kmart. I believe that took place in the 60's.

les__f MSN said...

I would think Lovell's would give us the answer to what the name of the store was on Wellington......as we haven't seen a picture of the old store yet,..       I've heard Kresge's, then United Stores five & dime,....etc etc ....... it would be great to find a picture,.or scan a page from Lovell's I really can't be sure about the name,..............Yikes memory being selective again                                                                                   HF&RV I would think a search of very early 60's......may come up with the answer? I wonder what is in t's place nowadays...........A Dollar Store would be appropriate as the old 5-10-&15 cents stores were really a forerunner to the present day dollar stores

winnie3ave MSN said...

Dianne. Just a little more info on Kmart. They went bankrupt a few years ago. Sears also was going under. Someone decided to buy Sears and started to make a go of it, and then when Kmart went bankrupt, and the shareholders lost everything, the guy that bought Sears, bought Kmart. If you are in Kmart, you will notice they are selling Sears brand appliances.

T- Transit Strikes. Even interruptions in our daily routine by the loss of bus service resulted in times to remember! My last day of work in Downtown Montreal. Taxis were hard to get. The walk home from Peel and Dorchester in a cold November rain with friends is a memory to cherish. We got through the tunnel at May Avenue faster than the long line of cars. In some ways "downtown" seemed like a different world so far away, yet the distance was not too far to hike home when it became necessary.
