Steambers between Montreal and Ottawa
Here is an add in the Lovells 1883-1884 Directory advertising navigation between Montreal and Ottawa via Lachine rapids. Cost $2.50 one way, $4.00 return.
Hi Guy ,...would you be able to find the answer to whether there was a Kresge's dime store on Wellington....We've established that the Woolworths of course was a Five & Dime,....and then there was also Marshall's 5-10-& 15 store at Church & Wellington,......but further along near 4th av on Wellington was a little store, that was also a 5-10-& 15 cent store,.....We've had guess's that it was a Kresge's,..but I've checked and cannot find evidence of this being true,....However it was that kind of store, but We haven't seen a 'scan' of the address's along Wellington in those late 50's early 60's years ,.showing address's and the name of the propriorter (sp?) basically nothing has been concrete enough to give the Name of the Store relataive to the address......... If you have a chance and find and old Verdun phone book,it would be neat to see ....................Thanks HF&RV
Prime Discount is listed in that block in the 1968 - 1969 Lovell's directory. Sounds right to me. Some mentioned squeeky old wooden floors, this store definitely had them too!
Yup ,.you good be right,..anything listed for the early 60's years ??Creeky old wooden floors were definetly a mainstay in the old store I Remember,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, only a matter of time,.and someone will find us a pictures of that end of Wellington (in those years of course) Thanks MaggieMck....... ( I had a thought at one point that it may have been named 'United Discount Store' with the familiar 5-10-15 cent logo appearing on the old flat wooden style sign with gold coloured letters: I also don't Remember it ever having any 'real' good deals in it.................Maybe that's why it disappeared................. HF&RV
Les, I have looked up the Lovell directory 1950 and found the following stores: Between 3rd and 4th: United 5 to a 1,00 store at 4830 Wellington. Between 4th and 5th: 5th Ave Dept Store, 4932 Wellington. I did not find any Kresgys. It is possibly the United store that you are looking for. Guy
Thanks Guy ,that is what I thought was there,.but then time clouds the memory a bit,..... So United Stores, .5-10-15, that makes sense now,. Thanks Again,.......... think i found a picture of a United Store ,a while back ,I may even have posted it,......but I am not sure,.I check & see if I can find it,.....They were all a very Generic Type of sign for a franchise in those days.........All those stores ,were basically what seems to the forrunner to todays Dollar Stores,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, HF&RV
Hi Maggie the united Store I Recall was on the river side which is even numbers, and the stores Guy found seem to bare this out as well Between 3rd and 4th: United 5 to a 1,00 store at 4830 Wellington. Between 4th and 5th: 5th Ave Dept Store, 4932 Wellington and the name seems to be right: United 5 to a 1.00 Store at 4830 I think this is definelty the store in Question: have fun and Remember Verdun

I always thought that United was a cigar store.
Weren't even numbers on the west side of Wellington Street? The 5 and dime store was on the east side (the river side).
