wonderful memories.
Everybody has wonderful memories of living in Verdun,.........Given the chance would any of you move back to Verdun??
WELL GIN WOULD YOU? I KNOW THAT I LEFT VERDUN 25 YEARS AGO DIDNT MOVE FAR BUT JUST FAR ENUF.I VISIT VERDUN WEEKLY CAUSE MY DAD STILL LIVES THERE AND MY MOTHER INLAW BUT NOW ITS A PLACE TO VISIT.I ALAWAYS AKNOWLEDGE VERDUN WHEN PPL ASKED ME WHERE AM I FROM,BUT ITS CHANGED TOO MUCH I PREFER THE MEMORIES. BIM
Hi Ginny, I don't think I could move back as those were times of a different place and time. I can relive them over and over in my mind and they never change. Of course, for me they were happy, fun times. I could live anywhere in the world as long as I can carry the dreams and hopes of a life I had back then.....but go back.....never. Cheers, Linda
Left Verdun in 1973, moved to Lasalle. Left Lasalle in 1984, moved back to Verdun and have been here since. Yes Ralph, I agree with you in regards to Beatty. There was just something about that street that I just can't put my finger on it.
While we grew up in Verdun and have many fond memories of our youth I'm not sure that we could ever go back. As a kid we started out on Galt Ave right across the street from Bannantyne School and my entire family on my mother's side lived on the same street. My world was compact and our family seemed very close. Towards the end of elementary school we moved to a house on Regina and the Uncles, Aunts and cousin's spread across Verdun. By the end of High School in '73 we had moved again to Rielle and part of the extended family had spread out to Crawford Park and LaSallle and we had to drive or take a bus to visit them. In '76 we moved to Greenfield Park and Verdun became a memory. A place to visit Grandma or maybe an odd celebration. By the early 90's I had been transferred with work through several transfers settling in Mississauga in late 92. There are very few of my extended family still in Verdun (maybe 5) and we're no longer as close as we once were. I've only visited Verdun a few times in the past 10 years. This past Christmas my wife (not a native verdunite) and I spent a few hours chasing down a childhood tradition of "Stillwell's Humbugs". As we wandered through Verdun I pointed out various vista's of my childhood memories. After a while I gave up and broke down resorting to looking in the phonebook, sadly to discover that even Stillwell's had left for the broader expanse of LaSalle. Driving back through Verdun I couldn't help but notice that the drive from the Nat' to the Champlain bridge took only a few minutes. Much shorter a drive than memry would have it. No I don't think I could go back for more than a visit. Verdun is no longer "Home" but just a memory of "Once was" sad but then that's life. Other's can, other's might but not I.
miss the childhood memories bu5t my family is in nova scotia now. luv to visit but too much has changed. still visit relitives in ndg, but the friendly maritimes are for me. here it is like verdun used to be. patsy
Yeah Osborne rocks but it is hell on trying to find a parking spot. Hey Ralph, did you read when I said that my oldest son lives in your old house on Osborne. Is that uncanny or what. Blew my mind, when he said he found a place on Osborne and the address was 918.
Hmmmm...how can I put this? Verdun has a certain "feel" to me. The minute I see the sign that says "Pont Champlain" as we drive in after being on the road for 12 hours straight, I get a big silly grin on my face...lol. I breathe in the smog and think "It's so good to be home again." Verdun, with Wellington Street and the boardwalk, the police sirens and fire engines screaming, the church bells ringing and the yearly sidewalk sales...and the memories. Verdun is my HOME. But....Virginia...with it's breath-taking Blue Ridge Mountains that I look up at from my house and my town of 132 people, with the sounds of the cattle lowing and the mountains stream at the end of the road, the cardinals flying in red blurs all over the place and the dogwoods in bloom in the spring....and my wonderful, loving and tender American husband. Virginia is where I BELONG. Know what I mean? Got me all teary eyed here now...lol. Luv, Sharon
Tell your son that there will be a big bald guy taking a photo of his front door this spring, Not to panic I am doing a little photo history on doors that have opened and closed in my life.
Hey ERNIE!!! Sharon Edwards here...remember me???? Hung out with the McKiernons and was engaged to Doug Ross many many moons ago, remember? LOL I'm in Virginia now...I'm a COWGIRL, can ya imagine? Hehehe ME...A COWGIRL How ya doing buddy? Married...kids?! I have 3...Fawn 21, Justin almost 16 and Allison who just turned 8. How's life my old friend? Luv, Sharon <---My married name is now STARR hehe get it? :-P)
what is the language situation in Montreal these days. After living in Winnipeg for 25 years my French is really terrible. Can a unilingual person work and live in Montreal or Verdun
Hello Sharon, Of course I remember you. I've actually been following the thread just haven't taken time to reply. As for me, 2 kids both in their 20's neither attempting to move out or to make us grandparents. I keep on reminding them that for my 50th birthday all I want is "keys returned". :) We've been here in southern Ontario since '92 and while I don't mind where we are I'm not certain that this is where I want to retire. It's much to diverse a community for me, I feel as though I'm a stranger in my own land. I think I'm looking for something a little less diverse and more in line with what I remember as "Home". I'll keep on lurking in the background and on occassion when someone starts a thread that catches my interest I'll pop in. TTFN Ernie
LOL Same old Ernie hehe LOL @ "keys returned"! Well I'm only going to be 45 this summer, and I have given MY kids the order to NOT make me a grandmother till I've hit 50 at least....PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE! hehee I could handle it at 50, but not now thank you. Of course I don't have to worry about my 8 year old but my oldest girl is 21 now and my son is going to be 16 in 3 weeks and I know HE has the capabilities too...lol. And UH UH...I ain't ready! So where are you thinking of retiring to then Ernie? Ironically, my hubby is thinking of us retiring to ONTARIO! hehe We drive thru the Thousand Island area when we come to Mtl and Rick just loves it there. Of course he loves fishing too so I guess all that water intrigues him. :-) Great seeing you here old pal.....don't be a stranger! Luv, Sharon *
I've often wondered if I would move back to Verdun. There was a time when the thought of a little cottage in Crawford Park really appealed to me. I left Montreal in 84 and for the first few years I always said my bags were packed and at the door to go back at a moment's notice. Over the years, though, that does seem to have changed. My kids have been raised here and this is their home. For me personally, going HOME is still a treat, though tinged with a little sadness as both my parents have passed way. Obviously they were my anchors in that city. We travelled the 401 religiously every year through snow and ice to get HOME for Christmas. Wonderful memories to hold. I am fortunate in that my sister and a few of my very closest friends are still living there so I do still get to enjoy the visits. Verdun was a great place to grow up and Montreal was certainly a fun city to live in! Being in touch with some people I haven't heard of in the last 30 or so years has been terrific, but in all honesty I don't think I would go back now. Still a Montrealer/Verdunite at heart but too much time and too many changes. I do still love to ask all the Leafs fans why everyone in Toronto drinks out of saucers, though. Why? - because Montreal has all the cups!!! Maggie
I have been away from Verdun for 35 years now and out of Quebec for 13 years. I don't anticipate ever going back to Verdun to retire. I hate the Quebec politics.....thats why I got out of there in the first place. I do have wonderful memories of growing up in Verdun....but they are just that.....memories.
Ed, Was beginning to think you had fallen off the face of the earth... 4 grandkids already. Last we chatted the 1st had just been born. Seems a long time ago since your Ottawa days and the girls were just beginning to talk (albeit 4 letter words). We had a good dump of snow here a few weeks back and we were talking at the office reminising about when we were kids how that type of storm was common place. I thought about some of the storms you and I experienced and how we would team up on our trudge to school because they never cancelled school for a little bit of snow. :).
