RemembrancePoppy and RemembrancePurposes and Objectives

The mission of The Royal Canadian Legion is “to serve veterans and their dependants, to promote Remembrance, and to act in the service of Canada and its communities.” In essence, the purposes and objectives of the Legion were born of the need to further the spirit of comradeship and mutual assistance among all who have served and to never forget the deeds of the fallen.
It is paramount that the Legion strives to pass on these goals and traditions to the families and descendants of our ex-service personnel and to raise this awareness among all Canadians.

The major source of funding for the Legion to accomplish this most important work is the annual Poppy Campaign, the foundation of our Remembrance Program. It is the generosity of Canadians that enables the Legion to ensure that our veterans and their dependants are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve. This November campaign, which sees Poppies distributed to Canadians of all ages, serves to perpetuate Remembrance by ensuring that the memory and sacrifices of our war veterans are never forgotten.

The Legion also maintains a leading role in the creation and care of memorials to the contributions and valour of our veterans and ex-service members. We are deeply honoured and proud to accept the task of organizing Remembrance ceremonies throughout the country, including the National Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa. In addition, working in concert with other veterans’ organizations and the Canadian government, the Legion has vowed to ensure that the preservation of the records and memories of our fallen heroes and returning veterans continues
in perpetuity.

The Royal Canadian Legion was honoured to initiate and coordinate the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the Centennial in 2000 and to suggest the declaration of 2005 as The Year of the Veteran. These and other commemorative projects and activities led by The Royal Canadian Legion have been welcomed by Canadians who have never hesitated to demonstrate their support in acknowledging the debt that is owed to those who sacrifice so much. We repay this debt in
our “Remembrance.”

Remembrance Day shall remain and be reverently observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of each year by us and our successors.

Arthur Davidson - funny

Arthur Davidson, of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation died and went to Heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is you can hang out with anyone you want in heaven".

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God." St. Peter took Arthur to the throne room, and introduced him to God.

Arthur then asked God, "Hey, aren't you the inventor of woman?" God said, "Oh, yes." "Well," said Arthur, "professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

1. There is too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
2. It chatters constantly at high speeds.
3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust, and finally,
5. The maintenance costs are outrageous."

"Hmmm, you may have some good points there," replied God, "hold on." God went to his celestial Super Computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it.

"Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur, "but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention then yours".

TRIBUTE TO A DOG

TRIBUTE TO A DOG

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.
A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side.
He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.
When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

-Senator George Vest, 1870

Jimmy Grant

I wonder if anyone knew Jimmy Grant of Wellington Street.  He lived more or less opposite the car dealer Page or LaPage which was beside the boys' school Notre Dame de la Paix.  That was sometime around 1950 and he would have been about
10 years old at the time.

Just hoping that someone, anyone, out there would be willing to share some pictures of the guys at work.

What Did Your Parents Do for a Living?

Hi, Everyone,

I thought this might be an interesting thread to start—what did your parents do for a living?

My foster father was co-owner of the Montreal Landscape Company, on Westminster Avenue in Cote St. Luc.  And my foster mother was a stay-at-home mom—a 24-hour job in itself!  My birth father was a welder.  All have been long deceased.

The name TheoMer is coined from the first names of my foster parents—Theodor and Mercedes.

Have a good day,

Jack

PLATTSBURG, N.Y.

A cheap way home to Verdun.  The Old Plattsburg Air Force Base has become an International Airport and its called the Southern Montreal Airport.  Example Flights to Ft Lauderdale OW $79 cannot beat that price.  It just opened in July.  I even heard a rumor that Air Canada was looking to open an operation there along with Delta and other Small airlines. You can take the Train from there to Central Station and then Metro to Verdun.  Also, there is NO Parking charges at the Airport.  There on the Web and put out a periodic News Letter.  Also, you can fly from Burlington, VT to Seattle for $200 R/T another good price on Jet Blue. Book for the holidays.  Tx Pat, Ret USAF

The Largest fish I ever caught in the St, Lawrence River

Larry Coote

Don't know where exactly to post this but  I heard today that Larry passed away last week. I visited him about 3 weeks ago knowing he was dying of cancer. His spirits were good and he seemed to have a total acceptance of the situation. He was one of the truly nice people you would ever want to meet. He was 59.

The Difference Between Heaven and Hell

A dear friend sent me this short story and I thought I would share it with you here.
I don't know the name of the author.

The Difference Between Heaven and Hell

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,
"I would like to know what heaven and hell are like."

The Lord opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.
In the middle of the room was a large round table.
In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled
delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly.  They
appeared to be famished.  They were holding spoons with very long
handles that were strapped to their arms, and each found it possible
to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.

However, because the handle was longer than their arms, they could
not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, "You have just seen hell."

"Now," the Lord said, "Let's go and see what it's like in heaven."

They went to the next room and opened the door.  It was exactly the
same as the first one.  There was the large round table with the large
pot of stew, which made the holy man's mouth water.

The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here
the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, "I don't understand."

"it is simple," said the Lord.  "It requires but one skill.  You see, they have
learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves."

Need Info.

I would like to know if anyone knew of a family with the last name of Cooney who lived on 3rd Ave. in the early forties.  I realize it was quite some time ago, but I am searching for the biological parents of  my deceased husband.  He died of a rare heart condition and I would like to know if it was inherited from his family.  He was born Jan. 26, 1943 and adopted in 1944.  I was told his mother's first name was Ruth (don't know if this is true) and that she either was a Cooney or lived with a family of Cooneys.  She is probably deceased, however, I would like to find a  family member who could confirm that this heart condition runs in the family because I am worried about my own daughter.  I would appreciate if anyone out there could help.  I have searched everywhere without any luck.  Thanks again.

HELLO FROM KEITH HICKEY

Hi All,
I used to live at 1136 Manning Ave till 1979 and then moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. I went to VCCHS school and hung around brown park and Curries and sons. Some people that I can remember is Pat Keough, Ronald Pucci, Todd Holdbrook and Steve Martin just to mention a few. If anyone remembers me drop me a line to say hello

Virus/Worms

I'm sure you 'upgrade' your virus/worm protection monthly. I have a
theory as to why there are so many viruses being passed around.
Whenever I receive an email like the feel good ones and which says
pass this on to my friends etc., I immediately delete it no matter
who sent it to me. It is the virus makers who make these picture
graphic emails. As soon as I read 'pass this on', I think 'f.... you'
and I trash it (excuse the language but it really gets my goat).
Sometimes I receive spam/junk email from who knows who, I trash it.
How do these spammers know my email address? From those email
messages that say pass this on to your friends. We all should use the
BBC column when addressing email if there are lots of addresses
included. Most email servers have this feature. I've received email
with 50 or more private addresses attached!
Much aloha,
Bill

Top 100 Cdn. Albums of all time

Did anyone see the listing of the top 100? Do you agree with Neil Young as the all timer?I see the Band came in 4th with Big Pink. I have always wanted to buy that one. One day back in school we had this 3 man folk group come to VHS and play for the aud. These guys raved about how good this album was..that was 40 odd years ago.
So now I am going to and get it..always thought The Band was one of the best anyway. Saw them with Dylan at the Forum...One of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Let me know what you think. This could be interesting...

Article in Toronto Star

Has anyone heard of the Hilton Brothers?  I was reading an article in today's Star about the brothers & showing a picture of one brother, Alex Hilton.  It's saying each of the four Hitlon boys has criminal convictions that range from chilling to comical.  The story reads on about some charges and acquitals.  One interesting part said that last year Alex raged drunkenly into the Maison du Egg Roll restaurant in the "hardscrabble" area of Verdun, the clan mostly grew  up there.  There is a book written by Davey Hiltons 2 daughters, the "Black-eyed Heart" in which they KO'd him.  This is what was written in the Star.   I was amazed to read Verdun called "Hardscrabble"

More Photos of Boardwalk including Crescendo Restaurant

By coincidence, I took the enclosed photos yesterday at the foot of Desmarchais Boulevard, including the Crescendo Restaurant. There is an Icecream restaurant on the left attached to the building.
Also a photo of the Guy Gagnon Arena.I am told that there is no more skating there and that it is now a Circus school to train circus acrobats. Unfortunately I have noticed ugly graffiti on the doors. The city apparently wanted to cut costs  since the Denis Savard and Auditorium arenas are sufficient for the declined population.
Also, note that there are still some boats attached to the wharf and the cute little bridge over the  road to the Marina and wich is part of the boardwalk.
Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate as the sky was overcast and it started to rain.

Black Holes

Black Holes are one of the mysteries of the universe that astrophysisists are starting to understand more and more. Enclosed is a page from the Astronomy magasine wich describes what scientists think is happening in and around a Black Hole. As the article explains, it is very difficult to illustrate such a phenomena due to the lack of knowledge. As we already know, all matter even light cannot escape the intense gravity of a Black Hole once they have passed the Event Horizon.
It is a very fascinating subject for those interested in Astronomy and there are many internet sites to consult.

Peter MeDerment

Wondering if anyone knows if Pete McDerment is still around. He has a sister Janet and they lived on Brown, just down from Beurling Park. I went to the 1976 Verdun Grad with Pete. Haven't heard anything of him in close to 20 years or so.  Thanks.
