Yes, I do agree. We just bought a new camera today. This is the 3rd digital we've had, and it seems to be a good one. Just need to learn how to transfer on the pc. We are not that computer savy. Wendy

Hi Lad, I had my first vcr for about 16yrs.Back then they cost a cazillion dollars. Now you can get them for $30. I still have a ton of vhs movies and home movies taken with our 1st comcorder that was huge, and also cost a cazillion dollars.I guess we'll transfer them to dvd one of these days. Wendy

Wendy.   A terrific photo program is called Piccassa, by Google. And, free to boot. It will automatically download your pics from your digital camera and has some terrific features built into the program for editing purposes. You might want to look into it.....   Glen

gpilon MSN said...

Sorry...bad typing there....it is called "Picasa"....well worth the download.

wendythepool MSN said...

Hey Glen, Thanks for the info. We will look into it.

hi wendy, love yer responses, i read all, this is really the best site there is, it really connects folks with their past days in verdun, any one remember playing hockey with road apples, [horse doodoo] in fall. i am still looking for someone out there to pull photos from st. willibrord,s and vch and post an album, guess i,ve got high hopes. i want some grad photos of vch [girls] here.1962. come on get off your haunches, and poste. hi to you all, fond memories carolyn bennett.

Hello Carolyn ( Bahamas)  Yes finding Willibrord School stuff seems to be tough to do,(so far anyway) but if we keep asking & the site keeps growing ,then inevitably someone willl come across some old pics I would think. & we can post them here,      It doesn't really matter if we know who is in the photo's either ,as we saw yesterday, people get recognised & remembered quickly by someone out there. Imagine someone taking an impromtu pivture some 40 years ago, and noone thinks anything about it,.just a flash from another Kodak Instamatic with that square flashcube  on the top corner that rotated with every picture taken,........hahahahaha  and now there being posted on a world wide web '  crazy stuff,.......and I still think there's hundreds of old shoe box's out there with some pics just waiting 2B found   ( see how I worked the old Shakespear, stuff in there ,our lit teachers would be proud ) 2b or not 2b                      hahahaha  yikes Ok that's a stretch,,,,,,,,,but we get the picture(or photo)...................                           Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les, I would like to see a photo of the Pavillion on the boardwalk at the foot of Woodland wich had a dance hall as shown on enclosed old 30s Guardian add,  for my collection of Verdun stuff. We have talked a lot about this place in the past wich was a gathering place of many Verdunites in the 40s, 50s and possibly the 60s. Does anybody know when it was demolished. Guy

I used the expression "Road Apples" while ago and to explain what I meant. Best thing was when I said we had milk delivered by horse drawn wagon.... You know you are getting old when.........   Brought back when I read it here...   Lad   ah the sounds and smells of the avenues..... good times....

wendythepool MSN said...

I remember when the Ice man commith, and the old guy who'd go up and down the back lanes with his cart sharpening knives, etc. I used to always feed the milk horse carrots or sugar cubes.Yeah, I'm old. Wendy

This is the only one that we have in the Photo Album links,.this one can be found in Cessna Kids Album we have had 1 or 2 other shots, but none really showing the building as well as this one,.....there is another one (or was another one) posted by someone ,showing the view from Lasalle Blvd side but very close to the small stairwau in the back ,so you don't get a real idea of the old place, As for demolition I would think 69 or 70 ,.I know the owners opted to close the place for good after the summer of 68 or 69 as they had had one to many break-ins,,,,,,,,,,and so an era ended. I may have some other shots ,ut I'm still operating from a laptop, and do not have immediate access to my home hard drives, or email address's .very frustrating,,,,,,,,,,,I'll check when I can,.......also busy cleaning up the property getting ready for winter, YIKES   more yard work........hahahaha                                                     HF&RV

My guess would be that this dance also could have been held in the old Bandstand (which 0 both of us have posted pictures of ,.as well as one of te Bandstansd under construction being built,.that pic was supplied by Joey-Verdun ,..................................   ps:  Joey hows the Verdun book coming? looking forward to hearing of it's release...................                                       HF&RV   Guy the picture you & have posted was one 'touting' the virtues of living in Verdun,.it showed the Bandstand , the Natatorium *& Auditorium ( I believe ,.as well as some of the 'new developments being built in Verdun at that time..............

Carolyn, I was speaking to one of our councilman, Roger Trottier, last Saturday and he told me that he lived on Galt St, app. no. 200, I guess that would be between Wellington and LaSalle, and that he went to St Willibrord School. I told him that I was also from Galt street, quite a coincidence. This means he would have gone there at the beginning of the 60s. Perhaps you or some other members might know him.   Guy

les__f MSN said...

Guy I believe the number 200 Galt is th Condos that are built in the Ecole Richard ........JMH went to this school & I played hockey on the rink ,that the brothers set up every winter,in the schoolyard, played all around that area, the Tower for CHVL was immedialtely behind the same school.  Also my sister -in law lived at 199 Galt in those years ,one of te only (if not the only) self contained homes on that block of Galt ,which is Btw: Btwn: Wellington & Lasalle Blvd,....the City of Verdun Yard works department was alos right beside the School (both those on the West side of Galt and across from the VerdunCity Yards was a little Church ./and closer to Lasalle (mid-block actually) was Bayard's , a place where all us kids could rent a bicycle ................ Here's the stairs to the Ecole Superiore Richard:          It's too bad the address plate is just slightly out of view ,.as it would be 200 Galt.....................  We used to sit on those steps & smoke cigarettes,& keep a lookut for my oldman coming home.....Yikes !!!                                                                                           HF&RV

Les, Thanks for the photo. It would be nice to have a picture showing the Pavillion and the boardwalk taken sideways. .10 cents for a Hot Dog, thats not bad. Guy

Hi Guy with a great deal of power of suggestion,.anyone knowing this area, can see the rooftop of te old Pav / Tennis Club building just to the left of te Boardwalk at the end of the fence separating the Boardwalk from the Tennis Courts,....also you can make out the Redtop way in the background,     I will continue to try to find better shots of the building ,./as I'm sure there's a lot of us would like to see a real good shot showing the whole building realtive to the Boardwalk etc etc ........   .Look how close to the River ,the old Boardwalk really was,........as kids we rode bicycles down washouts (water run off paths) that went down beside the old wooden stairs that went down to the river from the Pav (if you don't make the turn,.your in the drink...........hahahahaha          HF&RV

hey ,les, i have noticed this photo  does not sport any lighting on boardwalk, later there were lamp posts. how lucky we were, so lush, and also fun in the winter, my dad would take me to beaver lake in winter to use the toboggan hill, what a spot! then murrays rest. for hot chocolate. great times. does anyone have photos of flats with quarantine signs on doors during epidemics, seems i remember seeing some when we lived on 6th, at 410. photos are great, thanks, carolyn bennett   florida

Hi Wendybypool   You mention scissors man, remember the coal man? How about the guys who walk up and down the streets selling mops and brooms door to door? Anyone remember the City guys in the winter spreading the sand on the sidewalk by hand...just carrying the shovel and a flat stick and walking up the street and flicking it with the stick?   Lad

wendythepool MSN said...

Hi Lad, now that you've refreshed my memory, I do remember all those guys. Then when we switched to oil heating, there was a co. on the corner of Melrose and Bannantyne that would deliver our oil for the furnace. I remember our landlady coming to collect the rent monthly,$51 a month at that time. Can you believe it? Wendy

guy5479 MSN said...

Les, I believe the Bandstand you are referring to is this large shell like stage that was at the foot of Woodland. I saw many outdoor movies there back in the 40s. Of course what we kids preferred were cowboy movies. The Pavillion was behind this stage. I wonder when it was demolished and if any members remember it.  Guy   Archives SHGV

Great shot Guy,...and yes the 'Pav' was directly behind this Bandshell, Here's another photo we have posted many times ,but maybe some of Our newer members would appreciate seeing it too!!              Have fun & remember Verdun......................................................

Wendythepool   Forgot about the oil co. at the corner. Remember the barber shop next to lane way? Kent would go there for his hair cuts.  Condos there now. Didn't your friends live across the street on the corner?Might have seen them once or twice on way home. Rent was $51 you say..WOW  . Got first apt. in 72 for $85. Still a great deal.. Of course salaries were not the same...now people think you are nuts when you tell them that.Ended up down-town for $675 Studio...many years later.   Good Times Lad

Hi Lad, you mean the barber shop across Bannantyne below where the Bellwares used to live.Didn't it turn into a record store for a couple of minutes.I remember buying Paint it Black from there when it first came out.Yes the Bullards lived across the street.I know you told me what Kent was up to,but I can't remember. My first apart. on the Bannantyne near Church was under $100 also. Lived on the bottom floor with Marlyn Ray. Eric Neilson lived on the 3rd floor. His kids had a hampster that escaped and got into the plumbing somehow, and ended up in my bathroom.Scared me to death. You told me that there condos now, right Wendy

metalman108 MSN said...

guy   i always though of that pavillion, we as kids lived on woodland many times we went there to play and use the washroom the pavillion was beside the boardwalk, behind the pavillion was a driveway to the boardwalk, beside was another large wooden building that the front opened up and you get your hotdog and frie, pepsi, people used the washroom in the pavillion, there was a staircase on the side of the boardwalk, the entrance to the washrooms. les posted the picture of that wooden building, with some team players posing in front of it. if i can remember rite, they demolished the pavillion, the time they started landfilling from the excavation from the metro subway. then there was a fire and that wooden buliding with the tennis court with down in flames, as kids we watched that, in the 60's then they built a new tennis court smaller building still there today

Metalman, This is exactly the type of information that I am looking for as it is part of Verdun history. I made a copy of your comments wich is going into our archives (SHGV) for posterity. Thanks a lot for your input. Guy
