VHS Teachers
Remeber Mr Elliott he was a small little man very mild mannered with a Black bealt in karate so I was told, How about Mr Ainsworth ?
There were two Ainsworth boys lived on Woodland facing Mayor Wilson's cottage. I remember Russel. His sister Betty had a scar down the side of her face from having a birthmark removed. She wore her dark hair over it, Veronica Lake style. Ed
Gawd, Mr Elliott,,had him, the finger pointer..I would always look behind me to see who was pointing at as sat in the last row..A strong wind would blow him away..
My nane is Lynn I left Verdun High in 73, before that I went to Woodland. what year's did you attend If I dont't Know ya, maybe my brother or sister will remember. Lynn Yetman
Hi Lynn: I went all through Woodland School with your brother Bill. I have some photos from Grades 4 and 5 (including Bill) that I could sent to you if you are interested. I did meet Bill at the Verdun reunion at Strathcona a number of years ago. It was great to see him after 35 years. I have tried to post them but am having no success. I have been able to identify about 70% of the students. If there is someone more skilled than I at posting (that will not be difficult) let me know and I can pass them on. I scanned them at work, but when I send them home they are rejected. Gord Gibbons
Gord, do you know what format you saved them in when you scanned? Jpeg works best for me. If you want to try to send them to me to post, mumagain@hotmail.com
Gord I would love to see those photo's. Looks like maggie McK might have some advice on how to get them. Thanks to both of you. When I talk to Bill I'll let him know that we had made contact. Thanks again Lynn
Hi Frank/Beeaird......Spoke to Mr Elliot on the fone a couple of weeks ago.......now lives in Dorval and still sharp as a tack...Remembered any name I mentioned to him...Great guy!!....Also spoke to Mrs. Oulton, who was Miss MacArthur when she taught us at Rushbrooke......Take care /Sonny
Yetmans..me mum and dad would say..left VHS in 55-56??..your name rings a bell but am out for the count...Bill Yetman..remember?? Look at my profile in here..will see my name..
Key guy..HNY to ya and yers. Gawd..Mr Elliott..did he remember me?? Sheesh..and miss McArthur ..she caught me one day ducking down the side of my desk and made me stay there..omg..eons ago.. Do hope both are well!!!
Two names that I have seen recently on Verdun Connections reminded me of teachers from Bannantyne School. Gladwish and Sparrow. Do these names ring any bells for anyone else?
Hi Levisjeans 7! I just saw your note about Mr. Elliot , and would you believe he still looks the same except for the grey hair. I have seen him sometime last year in Lasalle around Angrignon Mall. Didn't Mr. Ainsworth live on Woodland , I once saw him many years ago enter his home. Does anyone know if he passed away a few years back ? I was told a long time ago that he had, but cannot be sure . Sweet_N_Gorgeous Anna
Mr Ainsworth did live on Woodland, And he did pass away. I think he lived on little on the wild side. I used to see him uptown at the bars alot. Then again I must of lived on the wild side myself back then.
Hi Maggie Miss Sparrow was my grade 2 teacher @ Bannantyne School in 1971-1972. She was terrific & one of those few teachers that made a positive impact on the lives of many Verdun kids. As for VHS, how about names like: Mr Hall (Biggest hands you ever saw). Mr Mcgowan (Phys Ed--->Jump for the towel???). Mr Cameron (tough "Scottsman"). Mr Bowman (Drafing & Automechanics). Mr Mulligan (Math). Mr Hayes (Phys Ed). As for Bannantyne, how about: Mr. Walker Miss Davies (Principal in the West-Island?) Mrs Beauchamp (Tough "Older" lady) Mrs Broadbelt Miss Seagal (Phys Ed) Miss Cragg (Had a huge "Crush" on her--->12yrs old seeing her in a bikini on a field trip to the Nat) Mrs Brown Mr Milley (Principal--->AKA "Hillbilly-Milley") Remember "Pops" the crossing guard on the corner of Verdun & Gordon. Mrs McKiernon (Best monitor of all time).
How about Ross Mercer Gr 8 Had an X painted between rows 3&4, If you acted up in class you stood on the X and touched your toes, He gave you a choice forehand or backhand he would give you 3 of the best with a metre stick!!! What we diden;t knowhewas a FENCING TEACHER . many a big lad was in tears To bad it can't be used TODAY
HiAnna,I heard Answorth passed away along time ago also. Was Mr.Elliot a small man?I had Mr.Jones for typing and he brought his big white dog in for some reason and I walked it down the halls of VHS. Wendy
My two favorite teachers from VHS in the 50s were Mulligan (Algebra) and Smith (Geometry). Both were strick and attentive, especially Smith, and that was what this unrully kid from the avenues needed to get passing grades. I wont mention the uninspired teachers who did me more harm than good, and VHS had one or two. My over all experience was educational and I am grateful for the attention the above teachers provided me. Although I dropped out of school in the tenth to join the navy, I went away with the sense I could excel if I aplied myself. I went on the college as an adult later in life. Thank you Mr. Mulligan and Mr. Smith. Second Avenue.
Anyone here remember Glenn Prunier..looking back now he was just a kid himself (and how our history class tormented him ) ie....putting a huge grasshopper in his sandwhich...tying rope to his chair and when he sat down...wow his butt must have hurt after hitting the deck a few times...Brian Hawker was a super teacher although I don't remember learning a lot of French in his class...but we had Fun!
Might assist us in determining who a particular teacher was if the years referring to were posted too. I have to prompt my humble brain back 50 years! Just a thought -- no big deal. Second Avenue.
I remember Mr. Elliott, a little guy that walked sort of leaning back a bit, also his nick name: Peanut. But the best damn teacher was the auto mech teacher Mr Holland, anybody know if he's still with us? That poor guy use to have some serious back problems
When I went to Verdun High Charlie Eliot's nickname was 'pinhead'. He kept in shape doing yoga and could twist his whole body into a tiny ball. I was in his first class at Woodland in 1947 I think. The next year I wass at VHS. He must have stayed at Woodland for a while because he didn't come to VHS in the two years I was there. Ed.
Hi Wendy ! Yes Wendy , Mr. Elliot was a small man, very neat, and meticulous looking ! Saw Him Last Year, and he still looks the same except for the gray hair. He aged well by the looks of it ! Oh Gosh, Eccentric Mr. Jones , yes I remember his white dog, surprising they let the dog in the school in those days ? Sweet_N_Gorgeous Anna
I did'nt remember Mr Jones untill we said he was Eccentric. and then it hit me! Talk about a time warp. He was a funny man can't remember what he taught.
There was a Mr. Elliot at Rushbrooke school. He arrived about 1951 and was still there when I left in June 1953. Do you think he could be the same teacher as referred to in this thread? Perhaps he had been previously at Woodland and went on to VHS. Thanks.
You've answered something I wondered about Charlie Eliot as he now likes to be called. He started teaching at Woodland in 48 and left in 49, but didn't come to VHS until around 51/52. Now i know where he was in the meantime at Rushbrooke. It was Clifford Wilson at Woodland that nicknamed him 'Pinhead". Cliff was in an auto accident that left him quadrapalegic just two years later. He died recently. Ed
About Glenn Prunier did he not marry Linda Boast? Had him for history.Told me I would not pass.Prov.Exam. I did....(just) but hey...guess he had a point... Lad
The version of C.E. Elliott's book that I have was published in 1989 by the P.S.B.G.M. The English Schoolboard of Montreal or the Lester B. Pearson Schoolboard might have information on it. Someone said that Mr. Elliott is still around. maybe they could convince him to re-publish?
Somebody mentione in a post that Mr. Elliot lived in Dorval with his mother. I found one listing on Canada 411. Marion Elliot 1770 Av Castlefield Dorval, QC H9P 1W1 (514) 636-7702 Might be worth a shot. If it is give him my regards. He was in my humble opnion the best teacher I ever had. Seems I used to run into him when I worked out of the Dorval Police Station. Gary Mace Saanic, BC
Was there in the 1980's. I remember the Satellite very well. It was a great place. Lots of airport people hung out there. It was still going up till we moved west in 1997. I read that you drove hack in Dorval and that Gump once owned the Satellite. That I didn't know. Gary
Seems to me a Dorval cop got shot in the parking lot outside the Satellite. It was before my time. Did you know any of the guys on the Dorval Force. You must have being you drove taxi. Gary

Mr. Ainsworth was a Verdun boy through and through. Attended VHS in the late 40's. His sister, Betty, was a schoolmate of my mom's.
