The old CKVL building on Gordon is now history as it was demolished recently as shown on these photos I took yesterday.
I guess they will build a condo building considering the value of this piece of land. I will folliow events. I believe that is the old Mgr Richard school on Galt ave in the rear.

It sure looks strange Guy, to see all the way the to the school on Galt,... the CKVL property looks a little larger ,than just that old familiar frontage of the actual radio station,..I imagine they acquired a couple of the houses right beside them,as that property does seem larger: Thanks for this update,........Our old world is disappearing,............ I wore my skates from my house on Wellington ,down through my shed, then over the snowbanks, down the lane btwn CKVL & Richard school to get to the Rink that was in Richard'schoolyard,......right next to the City of Verdun's Public Works Yard................ahh many Memories !
Salute / Goodbye to the old familiar radio station: Played all around this area,..and many a Verdun kid got to showcase their talents,...............................................Progress ,you decide
Some old CKVL stuff......................................................................................... ...........not sure about the last photo ,.but it was a Montreal thing ,so it's in........hahahahaha
Hi Guy..I was in Verdun on Friday I parked on gault ave I usually park on Gordon.I would have been surprised to see CKVL gone.I was shocked to see the school has been turned into condo's.On the side of the building facing the laneway I said to my daughter look the name of the school is still there just below the roof carved in cement. It is nice to leave some rememberance of the old buildings. When I was young and listening to hockey on the radio on Saturday nights I remember my Mom saying one of the Habs players either Bouchard or St Laurent attended that school.I can't remember their first names senior moment lol.I guess we would all like to have time stand still eh and hang on to our childhood memories.Has it been a long time that the school has been condo's. DeeDee
Hello Deedee,.........I would have thought ,that you'd be golfing in Florida,by now,......mind you ,Golf is not out of the question ,so far this year in Montreal, that's amazing........ I have an old picture of the school on Galt ,just prior to it's conversion,..that I took ,showing every window in the building bashed out,...Guess the kids had a target practice,..or exercised their throwing arms, getting ready for little league,..........hahahaha I'll try & find it and post it,..I always wonder why anyone would want to live in a converted class room ( although some are really well done),.......or the same for wanting to live in some of the old factory conversions around Montreal (all cities,do it) but I couldn't see wanting to say pay big dough to say live in the old Sherwin Williams building ,or similar,..............
Les..Talking about condos.I enjoy reading the gazette on Saturday's in the housing section.A couple of weeks ago there was a condo for sale in the old Red path Sugar House on St Patrick street it was up for sale (one million eight hundred thousand $1,800,0000) I hope I have the right amount of digits I have never wrote a cheque for that amount before ha! ha! But,But you get your own boat dock I am sure you could afford a boat if you can afford that condo ha! ha!.I also read that someone is turning the old Northern Electric on Shearer street into condos.I guess it was just a mattter of time. That building was in use till not so long ago there were a lot of little factories in there. DeeDee
DeeDee, I don't know when the conversion was done but I will try to find out and let you know. I also have fond memories of Mgr Richasrd school as I lived on Galt in the 40s and 50s and I used to go skating on their rink. Guy
Hi DeeDee, My Dad worked at the Shearer building for years when it was the Northern Electric. He is now in a vets home at 86 and doing great! Mike
Les-F, Here is an add that appeared in the June 7th 1929 Verdun Guardian and wich I previously posted on the 22nd of Octobre 2005 showing the Bill Monroe Orchestra wich used to play at the Pavillion. He also used to accompany the young talents that appeared in contests at the CKVL building in the 50s.The building also used to be a dance hall in the 30s. Guy
Thanks for that post Guy. These old papers and photos are treasures!
As far as I know the school was turned into a co op where no one actually owns the apartment and it has a long waiting list for potential tenants.
Ken
Hello all - Your CKVL message brought me back to when I was FOUR years old(1945) and my mom took me to the "Call Me Uncle" show at the station where I sang Baa Baa Black Sheep...oh gawd! Years later when Call Me Uncle was broadcast from one of the Boys & Girls Clubs(Dawson???), I tried my luck again and sang Five Foot Two.....guess I was a 'wanna be star'....lol. It's so much fun reading everyone's messages....keep up the good work. judy(grayburn) mcnab Hampton NB
Hi, I remember the Call Me Uncle show....it was broadcast from the Kinsman Boys Club for awhile. If you can believe it I tap danced on the show, and actually won that Saturday morning..oh to be young and nervy. ...Judy
Judy. Call Me Uncle, was broadcast from the YMCA, before the broadcasts at The Kinsmen Boys Club. Winston Allison

Judy. Isn't it great remembering the CKVL days. There are more than a few of us on here that "performed" on Call Me Uncle. Winston (3rd Avenue) Allison. Vancouver, Washington

I like the idea of members posting what city they presently live in as it adds more interest in the site. I know people want to preserve their identity but I don't think we need to worry as if anybody wants to know our address, they can find it in the phone book or at 411 on internet, providing they have our second name. Guy (Roxboro, Montreal) Qu챕.
Les-F, Some of your pictures don't appear on your messages, are you aware of this ? Guy
Hi Judy, You wouldn't happen to have 2 tap dancing sisters named Linda and Kathleen would you? Mike
Hi Guy ,.yes I have noticed at times that some pics disappear a few days later,.but I have just gone back thorugh thid thread ,.and they all appear,...I beleive this is sometimes due to the actual site where I may have found a picture,.and it seems to stay for a day,.or so,..and sometimes ,they just don't 'load' as quickly as others,.....but in general they will re-appear,.unless the originating site, prevents a direct link,.....Now I do know that many of the origianl photographs I have posted over the last few years,.will definetly not appear,.because they were eating up storage space, and in order to continue to post & display photo's from my hard drive,I just empty the old ones to afford myself new storage space(reuasable actually)..... So I have always advocated ,to everyone to feel free to 'save' any pictures I find for us,and you can then use them anytime,.....once saved to your hard drive, you will then have anytime access,,,,,,,, I've just added another 250GB .to mycomputer,so I can keep saving for a little while more...........hahahaha added to the original HD ,.......I should be able to store a lot of stuff,....it's finding it ,that gets difficult...........hahahah So if you go back in a thread ,most of my stuff should appear,.......Good luck if there is one in particular ,that you Remember seeing at some point and would like to see again,....then Don't hesitate to ask ,I'll see what I can Do, to find it........Thanks for the headsup though: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Hi Mike, My sister name is Joan, and she did not tap dance.... Judy
Winston: I seem to remember a 45 record that either you or Bumpy made (maybe both) singing I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover. Is it my imagination or did one exist LOL Connie
Connie. It is not your imagination. Bumpy and I did make a record singing; "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover". Also, one of the members on here, who use to live across the street from us on 3rd Avenue, had an uncle, who live on Bannantyne and 4th Avenue. He had a recording studio, and recorded me on another record doing the "Call Me Uncle Show". I know they are around here somewhere (YA RIGHT). I have not seen them in years. Winsto
Dave vs. Carl: The Insignificant Championship Series. Who will win?
Les-F, Here is an older picture of the now demolished CKVL building. It probably dates back to the 30s early 40s. The difference with your photo is that the canopy and signs were changed as well as the bottom front windows and there were white stripes instead of solid white front bottom of the building, otherwise, the rest is the same. Notice it was a dancing hall at the time called Wood Hall. Of course Mgr Richard school is still shown in the background. Notice a couple of kids sitting at the entrance. Guy
Still difficult signing on, but Yes I save dthis picture from when you posted it before Guy ,...it is interesting ,.and notice the sign above the marquis says Dancing,.......................... being know as WoodHall ,.........(that's right isn't it??) ..........Great old picture,....lots of History in that old building,.... I still haven't found a really good picture shwing the huge tower (antenna),that would have been in the back yard of CKVL you can sort of see Guide Wires Running on a very steep angle on the CKVL picture on the Front page,....if these are some of the support gude wires,.then you can get some idea of just how high the Tower would have been, In the picture you have posted ,.we would be able to see the Tower (if it had exisited in those days),....as it was directly behind that wooden fence, but right at the 90 degree to go down the lane that ran btwn Gordon & Galt : Maybe there is one in SHGV,...but where to start to look......?? Thanks for posting that picture again................. (hope this gets through).......but based on my rate of spelling errors,I need the Typing Practice........................hahahahahaha
May be your dad would know mine HARRY CHAPMAN he worked there from 1913 till he opened LACHINE PLANT

iam4golf, So thats where the name Wood Hall comes from. I am taking note of this for my archives as well as for the SHGV. Thanks for the information. Guy

Good pictures Gary,...I tried opening the Yahoo site ,.but was led through a joining process,..(couldn't open the site),....but I do have a Yahoo account,.just didn't think of using it at the time,... Thanks for those pics.......Some interesting history to that old building,... Someone recently asked if we Remembered the CKVL amphibous cars,...I did post a couple of posts inanother thread of those old cars,.....I Remember well all the kids in the neighbourhood running up to the River to get to watch these strange cars, enter the river,,,,,,,,,,,quite something in those days:
Hey, I remember they taped a show of Like Young or Teen 67 from CKVL building. My friends and I were thrilled to see ourselves on TV.I was about 13.
My memory of CKVL goes back to the late 50's. I had an really old radio with an external antenna which was draped along the top of the walls in my bedroom to get reception. CKVL was the only station to come in clearly and lucky for me the only one which seemed to play rock and roll. "Le Hit Parade Americaine avec Leo Lachance" echoed through out house every afternoon. Can't figure out why I didn't pick up any French. Cheers, Dale
My first exposure was when my sister Gwen would blast Le Hit Parade on her radio. It was probably my first exposure to French. I guess that may have been around 1954 or 1955. I was 10 years younger than her and became permanently hooked on early Rock n Roll.
To further that, my birthday present from my wife this year is to see the Beach Boys on June 2. I have been a devoted fan since Surfin' USA.
So I have so many photos from the WWII zombies vs sailors days when Gus Pell Mell was the bouncer and my grandfather had a heart attack during his own beauty contest. But I can't figure how to attach.
My husband is Ron Woodall. His family owned Woodhall. Ron is alive and kicking at eighty-eight. We own several pictures of the family and crowd at Woodhall. As well as an oak cutlery container with a plaque given to the family by the city of Verdun. Ron’s dad Walter Woodall was a city Alderman. He married Gabrielle Beaudoin. I believe her family was also from Verdun. They both worked at Woodhall during those years.
Heather Woodall
Hi Ron and Heather Woodall, thank you for surfing by. If you can figure a way to attach your pics I am sure everyone would love to see them.
If you would like to send some pics I can post them for you.
Just email me your email address ,as if you were just adding a comment like you did above...
I will get back to and I will not put your email on here ...just your pics. I try to protect everyones privacy so you won't get bugged by ads or scams.
Thanks again for interest and comments.
Cheers ! Les
A memory. A the end of our street was the Lasalle Road School. I was in grade four. The school was on a high bank above the St. Lawrence River which ran fast and dark, and just upstream, was a long stretch of impassible rapids. In very cold winters, the edges of the river froze over and despite many many cautions, some of the kids insisted in sliding to school along the river's frozen edge. There was a lot of commotion that morning and we all ran to the cliff above the river. You could see the black current of river through the hole. His name was Lionel and his desk was next to mine. I remember being more visually shocked at the sight than I was about Lionel. It was my first experience with death and I was strangely passive. and did not grasp what had happened.
