Looking for Jimmy Hendy
Jimmy Hendy now living in Vancouver and has been for yrs Married a Francine? from Verdun......He would be about 65 LOL.......Would love to talk to him.........Toni
Only the bestest in here..hahahaha.. Question?? Did you live near him.on Rushbrooke as pic and name is vague..but that happens as ya age..guess..sigh...??
Never thought I would ever see reference to the Diamond Store .I assume this was the one on Lasalle Blvd opposite the park and near Rushbrooke street. The owner sold and moved to California.I remember going there so often to pick up cigarettes for my father (3 packages for $1.00) and the classic spruce beer with the white porcelan stopper.
It was the place to buy homemade spruce beer in those bottles with the lock caps of which I have three of them..no spruce beer in them tho. I think the name was cause of the angle of the store where the lane cut off the corner of this store??
I knew Jimmy Hendy well.. I'm not sure of his age at the time, nor can I remember if we went to the same school, or, if we did, what class he was in. We went to the Kinsmen club fairly often over the space of a year, possibly 1952. His family excavated a site on Rushbrooke St. and built a new house on it. There was an upstairs flat that was at one time rented by the owner of Diamonds. Jimmy's two brothers were older so I had only a passing acquaintance with them.. Alex had a motocycle and was involved in at least two accidents during my time. He was badly injured in the last one and swore never to go out on his bike again. The other brother Ronald seemed to be in delicate health. I would be interested to know what became of them. As for Diamonds, it was just across from the tiny park at the corner of Rushbrooke, Lasalle and Wellington. I worked there after school and on Saturdays when I was about 11 or 12. You mention Spruce Beer. Well, I made the beer and bottled it every week. The ceramic tops were a nightmare because part of the beer would end up on the floor as I tried to ensure a perfect lock with the top. I also made the hamburger patties on a daily basis, from mincemeat bought across the road at 29 cents a pound. Thanks for all the information.
I now know where the name Diamond came from.On the other side of that lane was a barber I went to for years as a kid.. I really am amazed at the flood of seemingly forgotten memories that have been flooding in since reading many of these posts evoking both wonderful and not so wonderful memories.
Do you remember the street address you lived at? As to Ron Hendy, believe he died of cancer, which was a nono in those days, no one talked about it, as he did not smoke. We lived at 3380 and in my mums bedroom, we kept the ornamental headboard of the Hendy's, till they built their house next door. Was great to see your reply in here, do you know me or vice versa?/
At the risk of being wrong Beesaird ,I will assume your question was directed to me.:-) I lived at 150 Rheaume which was that short street off Wellington on the opposite side of the small park .Before the building of the access road to the Champlain bridge it had a large park/sports field. While I do remember the Hendies and the kids around the area in general and especially from Rushbrooke Elementary (1949-1956 I think) ,I'm afraid some memories and specifics have been ravaged by time .I do remember my phone number which was Pontiac 6-9843. While I have no certain memory of you, your age etc indicates I must have known you along the way as I was quite active in the area as a kid (sports etc including our weekly fights (English/French)with the guys from Lafleur street). Which grocery store are you referring to?The one at the corner of Lafleur and Lasalle Blvd or the one down from Diamonds opposite the church.
The park was the only one around, we would go there to use the swings. As to the grocery, was the one at the crossroads of Rushbrooke,Lasalle Blvd, Strathmore. Sorta strange as my parents and family moved to Strathmore, Dorval, in 1956 Didnt Delma Turner and her hubby own the one near you, she was from Rushbrooke, she had a brother named Bobbie? Then there were the Kemps,Davidsons,Flanders,Chassions,etc..
Sorta proves cant lie about what yer dad did...haha..Was proud of me dad, never drank to an extreme. Keep a roof over our heads... Can remember going to Diamonds to pick up a can of players tobacco for him and getting a bottle of coke.
I know Roddy Diamond, he is my sister in law's brother, and he was a tough guy. He was also a boxer and won the golden gloves at some time in his life, but he was not related to the Diamond store. He lived further down Wellington across from the Anglican Church. The last owners of Diamonds were the Sauve's. Who I know very well and still keep in touch.
Hi Daisy, Your right, Roddy was/is a very tough fellow. I remember him from the 60's early 70's when he was a bouncer in the Pointe. I think with a certain Mike Lazure who was another very tough guy with a very big heart, although he didn't want anybody to know that!! I got to work in the cable tv business with Mike and his brother Peter, Frank Pedder, and Les Cloake, just to name a few. What is Roddy doing these days? Mike
Yup Roddy was a tough character,....but he's a good guy,and was Funny,He did live just across Wellington and a half block over from me,....He lived btwn Gordon & Rielle on the North Side of Wellington,....a few years laterhe became my neighbour again,..living almost directly across from me on 9th av in Lasalle,.....I Remember Roddy running a restaurant on either 1st or 2nd av just below Verdun Av,.....They actually made great burgers, but being a restaurant was I think somewhat secondary,...more of a small corner store hangout ,it was btwn Verdun Av ,..and the Laneway ,on the East side of (1st or 2nd) it was not there for long,.....Also Roddy once ran for Mayor of Verdun,......(at least he was on the ballot)I doubt he thought he'd win...........hahahahaHe did work as a bouncer in the old 1&2 club in the point,.....but he also later on in Life,..worked directly for Roman Gralewicz,..who was president of the S.I.U. .................Roman took over the controls of the S.I.U. after Hal Banks 'slipped' out of the country,......on his own private yacht, thus eluding the Law for good....................hahahahaha (I'm sure he had 'no' help, with powers that be turning a blind eye,..cause that would be 'dishonest'........hahahahahaha Now I can't quite Remember Roddy's brothers names ,.they were closer to my age,....'Bobby' was one I think,...and the other name escapes me (but I'm pretty sure there was 2 other brothers).........maybe someone out there does know..............Funny thing was ,anyone who Rememebers 'Shaney' from Bert's Bar in Lasalle (another good guy ,Btw),.......lived in the exact same house on 9th av in Lasalle ,as Roddy did (although of course not at the same time),.....perhaps the house was owned by Bert Lungi?? I really don't know,....I wonder what Roddy is doing these days,..........time frame I refer to was mid to late 60's and early 70's,......
Hi, I also remember Roddy.Last I saw of him was in Lasalle in the early 80"s.He was hanging around with Ralph Ungar and silverhaired Freddie who passed away.I remember Roddy had a young son who died from getting his head caught in the balcony railings while being babysat. What an awful thing that was. Wendy
I also remember Roddy Diamond. I didn't know him, I just heard his name a lot. I always thought he was "connected" to the Taxi business. For some reason his name makes me think of the CALEX gas station (at Willibrord and Verdun) as well.
I knew Freddie Fure he was married to Peggy Gair last I heard they were in Ontario. Peggy was good friends with my sister Karen Mace. I also knew Peggy's sister Nancy from Valiquette. Gary Mace Saanich, BC
Hi Gary,.I'm guessing that was his second wife,? He was my nextdoor neighbour in Lasalle ,...and he used to come in my oldmans shop in the Point,.for years,...I party'ed with Freddy many times,...when he separated form his 1st wife,.he got an apartment behind the old VerdunHospital,an apartment that had an inground pool,...a few party's there,.....We had to take him to the Hospital,.after splitting his head open and falling into the Pool,...Freddy then proceeded to the hospital(with drink ,still in hand).......to get his melon sewn up.................hahahahahah He also had a brother named Raymond, and his father was Vic who after retiring ,.came and would work in my oldmans place,....Freddy and Raymond both worked in the Elevator business, and I think that there was some sort of connection with the Moore family,......(not sure of the connection, but it could have been through marriage,..or perhaps just friends).......maybe Kungfu knows,......he's a long time Elevator Guy..........
Mike. I worked with Mike Lazure on the Montreal Stock Exchange. You are right about having a big heart. I am one of those guys that is not afraid to tell someone, including guys, that I love them. And he was a guy that I loved and was always glad to see him. I think close to the last time I saw him, he was getting a haircut on Argyle(?), or close by there. He was always trying to get me into weight lifting, and always had a great personality. I keep meaning to ask his sister Sammie, what happened, and when.

Hi Winnie, That must have been in the late 60's. I worked with Mike and Peter in 72 at the cable company,,,,actually the contrator, Hineson Enterprises. I can still see mike with that big stogie in his mouth! He and Peter would spar to see who was strongest and you know Peter was no slouch even though he was alot smaller than Mike. I heard that Peter got into the trucking business after that. I'm sure that Tony could update us on that. Take care Winnie, Mike
Hi Les, I'm not quite sure who you are, but yes you are right about Roddy also living on 9th ave, that when he was married. I used to go visit their when I was a kid. And he had a restaurant, tryed out for Mayor, bouncer etc. He had 3 brothers, Robert,( who passed away about 10 yrs ago) Ricky and Randy, and of course his sister Darlene who is married to my brother Arthur...Winston remembers him. Roddy had 2 boys, one who is still around in his 30ties, and yes saddly, the youngest did die when he was accidentally strangled from having his head caught in the railing on the balcony. He was only 6 I think. Roddy still lives in either Verdun or the Point. I haven't seen him for about 5 yrs now since a last family special occation
daisydewdrop,.& Connie,.......what happened to Bobby ? (if you'd rather not say, that'sd OK too)....I Remember when Bobby went through a personal nightmare in Morocco(I think it was),..he went through almost the exact thing as ,was depicted in that movie Midnight Express,...............and Roddy tried for a long time to get him out of there,...Finally he did get back to Canada,.....but he was definetly a changed guy at that point,....I didn't Remember a third brother,..but I guess Randy would be the youngest one,.??I Remember Robert(Bobby),...and I guess the other one I recall was Ricky?(but I'm still not sure),.......the two I Remember from Wellington Street, must have been fairly close in age?? with Robert(Bobby) being slightly older? That's too bad that one has passed away,.......never nice to lose a family member,...and Roddy's youngster as well,....that would be difficult for sure,& I doubt they ever really get over something like that...........
Hi Les, Yes robert, (bobby) would have been 56, and he is the one with the Morocco thing. But Robert was a really nice guy. Ricky was a few years younger than Robert, and Randy is the youngest comeing in at 46. Robert died of complacation from diabetes, it was sad as he was only 45-46 when he passed.
Hi daisydewdrop,.then it was Bobby & Ricky,.........I knew (and of course Roddy,.......but just a few years of age difference can make someone almost invisible to us ,...I didn't Remember Randy,..................but it was odd that twice in my life Roddy was my neighbour,.both times living across the street,in Lasalle he was almost directly across (on;y a drive way btwn the houses difference),..and of course on Wellington ,.L ived above the old Mt RoyalFurniture Store,.(which later became Better Bargain Stores),.etc etc ,.and they(he Diamonds) lived btwn Gordon & Rielle ,just a few doors down (towards Rielle fromGordon) from Cote's Grocery Store on the corner,.......just popped into my mind also was that old Pastor Johnston built a Church right behind them,(entrance on Gordon ),........Complications of Diabetes killed my oldman too,...Unfortunatley it's something that hit's lot of People nowadays.......................
Hello You Guys, Been so busy but if ever you need info on the boys Give me a shout on MSN I'm TLazure@msn.com... OK I can answer on Mike....He did have a heart of gold......I remember at his funeral a Greek Minister came by and sat with My Mom and the family Told us how He was so stuck one day and needed a battery for his car, which Mike was sellling on his car lot..The Minister had sid He could not pay for it right away, Mike had sid Take it If you come back fine if not Don't worry about it, He had went back to pay Mike and Mike refused his money..This was a total stranger....If there was ever a person down and out Mike was their for them.......He was an exceptional Man..I miss him. Mike had Lung cancer and worked right up to his last day.Went through a lot of radiation and treatments..In and out the hospital for 2 yrs...He hung in there right to the end....Never missed a day of work....
