Someone mentioned a few weeks ago, that they spent a lot of time around the Missisqoui area,.............. would you recognize this street ?
Rue Principale ,Bedford, Missisquoi 1951................
I like the small town look,.Remember how a lot of Quebec looked, once you left the Island of Montreal.....you went from big city to Rural Quebec in a hurry,..............but it always made the drive to the States by those old back roads ,so much more of an adventure,.rather than the very sterile boring highways of today,......(but it was alot slower going ,I will admit,.but that's what made it a 'trip' ........
have fun & remember Verdun

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 296 of 296An outdoor theater in NDG,.....anyone Remember this place........?? ............or these community Gardens in NDG........ seems there were these community type gardens in almost every area,....the Douglas grounds in Verdun used to have Community Gardens on it ,.and manty people grew their own veggies,............ .same gardens roughly around 1945 ish............ HF&RV
StAntoine at Calumet place,.the first year of old Westend Community Garden,..................but checkout the old ad on the brickwall: Old Stock Ale,............................made by Dow Some of these old painted signs can still be seen, faded through time,.but there is still some evidence of te old ads,on buildings everywhere,.sort of like a ghost from the past, reminding us of people who went before us................. Remember a couple of years ago we tried to find some photo's of those old water trucks that came downm the streets & avenues,.with it's water spraying along the curbside,.and as kids we would jump out over them,.blah, blah blah......... Well I still haven't found one from the 60's but here's an oold City of Montreal truck,..cleaning the streets ,with it's spary of water,.......... ,,,,,,,Now this one is an old baby for sure,.............but maybe someone else out there will Remember it> HF&RV
Les The water truck is before me.Lets take a shot where the pic was taken. I say maybe Old Montreal maybe de la Commune..conbblestones and tracks...anyone else? Lad
Hi the lad: Commune certainly had that look of the tracks down the center,.....If that is correct ,.then the building in the background would seem to be on the Harbour Side(waterfront ),.?? but I also think a few spots along either Notre Dame or StJames,.had 'railings' in some spots like those across the street in that photo ? ............................................................................................................hf&rv
This weekend will see a lot of big family get togethers,......( I would think) and the old Huge Thanksigving Turkey Meal, with all the trimmings, and the usual eat to much ,.......and then the familiar Tired Feeling after a Big Meal..........................Always feel 'too full' but we do it almost everyyear,.. , Remember the 25 lbs turkey's,.............and then the turkey soups,.& hot turkey sandwich's......for a few days ................Yikes Instant Tonnage It's hapenning this Weekend already ..... this year is flying,................(Sorry Our South of the Border members ,have to wait till next month),....................then Christmas before you know it, Enjoy your Family & Friends,..............(and dinner too!!)
Remember these trucks all around the province? ...we all Remember Maislin of course,.....but the other trucking company's were plentiful in Quebec ,.as well......Here's one I Remember they always had ads on TV .........Kingsway Transport,.............. also Recall Allied,.....Speedway,....... Smith Bros........................... and of course the streets of Montreal were full of recognizable company's with rather large fleets of trucks,...... Eaton's ,.....CNR,...........Westons Bakery Trucks,..........Montreal Star (quite a few of those at one time).............Humpty Dumpty Trucks,.......etc etc ,.... not to mention Molson had a fair size fleet too,.......as did Dow Brewery's ,and Labatts,.... the City was alive with Trucks constantly delivering all the goods we needed ,.......and the Montreal HArbour was always loaded with trucks zooming in & out,........... Montreal was an important city of Commerce at one time,..............with largest Inland Port in the World,............it kept Montreal a very important stop : HF&RV
Les, I remember Smith's Transport Trucks. I think The Canadian Pacific Railroad bought Smith's Transport. Remember the beer delivery trucks downtown that had that elevator lift so cases of beer could be lifted to the second floor of taverns and put on to the conveyor with the rollers. The beer was rolled right in to the second floor. No lugging it up the stairs. Those Guys were on the case back then-Fresco
Hi 3guys on the beer truck..driver got the penny commission,2nd guy got half and third guy got a third of a penny...could be wrong with this but I thought I heard this along time ago. Also guys who worked at the breweries got a free case or two every week. Not sure again.Maybe someone out can tell us? Lad
I just Remember the rollers, going into the basement window of a Grocery Store,.and they would fire those two-fours down the rollers ,.and you could hear the rollers from a half a block away,.......then they threw the MT's back and they always sounded like they were going to smash,,,,, as for free beer,.the employees did have their perks,.including going into their own bar after a shift & have what they wanted,...(except for the nightshift..the complimentary lounge was not open that late),...but I know the employees were alittle ,more resourceful than ,to let a closed bar stop them,.when there were plenty of 'sample product' to be had throughout the plant.............\ It's amazing how society has changed so much,.Remember back when most workers had a Beer at lunch ,..and every place else they went while on the road for the day,.......and it seemed everyone smoked as well,...... It was just a social thing to deliver something somewhere and have the proprietor offer you a beer,.....or when travelling around town ,it just wouldn't be right ,if you drove all the way to the East -end ,......and didn't stop for a 'sit down beer' in one of the many Taverns throughout Montreal. Yikes,...can you imagine how many truck drivers ,.and just workers in general were having a few at lunch & then maybe after work,...and they all drove home,...........Seems scary nowadays,.......Now were belted into cars with airbags all around you,and driving far safer cars ,better handling,.etc etc ,.....Don't smoke ,.so there's no dropping the cigarette in your lap,.and then searching for it,.while driving............hahahahaha Oh yea & the seat belts of the day ( if you had any ) were just perfect to open one of those old Stubby Bottles,................and don't forget that Speed Limits (were really just a suggestion)......................................... the lad: as for the CKGM site I haven't been on it lately ,I will check it out,is there new stuff? I've posted some pictures from there before,..it is a good site: HF&RV
Les They took all the bars out of Central Station..banned drinking at lunch. If you had one dont come back..We had one guy buy a root beer in a bottle and got stopped..looked like a pint...too funny. Remember the roller sounds Steinberg's had em too.... Good times... Lad
Yes the lad: I had forgotten about those ,or at least hadn't thought of them in a long time,.the Orders would be shot down the rollers,........& then we'd grab them and put them on Our Wagons,......(or toboggan ,if it was winter) Also Remember when you first walked into any of those Steinberg's stores,.they had the BBQ chicken on the rotisserie ,.a whole BBQ chicken for .99 cents,................... and the smell of Fresh Ground Coffee ,.when you got near the Coffee isle......................hahahahaha They were always the sounds & smells of the Hustle & Bustle of Steinbergs,. I don't know why but I Remember the A&P store in the Point ,.seems to me there coffe machines smelled the best,,,,,,,,, hahahahahah What strange memory's ................Thanks for the prompt: HF&RV
I remember the A & P on Banantyne at Desmarche, ( I think), spice cake & potato bread & yes the 8 O'clock coffee, although I was never allowed to drink any! Carole
Crawfordpark Verdun was also a good place to grow up in..We use to have nice long walks along the river boardwalk to the Nat..
Hi They opened a 24hr A&P near me.Everytime I go in the smell of the coffee brings me right back...Forgot about the BBQ at Steinberg's.... Lad
Well this is listed as 'Aerial Photo's of Falaise Sainte Jacques' but I think we'd know it by another name, ................that is a large chunk of real-estate,........... HV&RV

A few different viewpoints of the old Homestead,........... .I wonder what some of the inhabitants of that park in the bottom of the photo,.would think of their old City ,.now, and all the changes to our lives,..... Neat to see the place from a different perspective,........... HF&RV
Les Rapides de Cheval Blanc, (what),...bet most of us rarely ) thought of the rapides on the other side of the Island,..... .although not terribly fierce as rapids go,.it nevertheless ,sure shows why,the building of the old Lachine Canal to get past Montreal was quite an achievment & was directly responsible for the very prosperous years to follow ,for Montreal ,for quite a while,..... This view of Les Rapides du Cheval Blanc is westward and shows the Two Mountains commuter rail line along the southern edge of the terrain. The railway, which crosses over Riviere des Prairies near the top of the image, caps off the Parc des Arbres sector at the western limit of the largest remaining undeveloped shoreline on the Island of Montreal.
Fresco & the Tram & railway fans ,.can get a good look at the commuter railline from Two Mountains ..also in the picture above you can see the Lake of Two Mountains,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, HF&RV
.More shots ,of Two Mtns area,................but this is more meant to be riviere a l'Orme: and here's a little detail of the pics This photograph is of the Riviere a l'Orme ecoterritory on the islands' west end. The Riviere a l'Orme road which zig-zags through this expanse of mixed forest, meadow and wetland, intersects with the Trans-Canada Highway towards the bottom left of the image. At the top of the image is the Lake of Two Mountains. Angell Woods lies to the south of Riviere a l'Orme and between the Highways 40 and 20 (a portion of Highway 20 can be seen along the bottom edge of the photo). This area is bordered on the west side by an industrial park and on the east by housing projects built on the former Fresh Meadows Golf Course .............................Hope you had fun on a little mini aerial tour around Montreal in Labelle province............. HF&RV
Nice pictures, thanks for sharing them. Does anyone know more about
the island across from the rapids. Do people have vacations home
there? Is there electricity? etc.
Thanks,

Les and thelad, Message 224 (Lachine Canal) 28/10/07: The photo is of the Turcot yards wich are now completely demolished. The photo I posted yesterday of the Lachine Canal taken from my car was taken from the overpass over the Lachine canal in the middle of the photo while driving to the left towards Pullman, Boulevard Ste Anne de Bellevue; (St Jacques) route 20 west. The building in the center of the photo at the end of Angrigon Blvd is no long there. The land will be used as a replacement of the Turcot Interchange and will be completely landscaped and harmonized with the Lachine Canal. I believe work will start next spring. I will keep you posted as I pass there every week. Guy
Les, That picture of the Turcot Yards is where the old lac à la Loutre also called lac St Pierre was situated going back to the beginning of the colony as previously mentioned. That is the lake shown at the bottom of the enclosed old historical map (1542-1642) where the indians used to fish and hunt. Guy
Lad, Are you saying youused to work at Turcot Yards? If so, I would love to hear about. Ken McLaughlin

Les, Great vintage map. I am making a copy for myself and for the SHGV archives. Guy
Hi Ken, How are you connected to Turcot Yard? "The Lad" and I worked in the stores dept at the CN Turcot garage for Simon Bois, the Storekeeper.. Prior to that I worked at the Bridge St. CN Bond Shed, Bonaventure Terminal, Piggyback Terminal, Monport Intermodal Container Terminal with guys like Roy Lundregun, Stu (Sexy) Mawhinny from Egan Ave, Eddy (Newfie) Locke, Bernie (Beep Beep) Fontaine, and many more, whose names escape me now. I am Lloyd MacIntyre, now living in St. Lazare Qc. (next to Hudson) I am a former Verdunite who lived on 1st Ave, 3rd Ave, 6th Ave, Egan, and Valiquette from 1950 to about 1988. Then CN transfered me to Toronto 1991 to 1997, then back to Montreal, then back to Mystery-Saga (Mississauga) from 2000 to 2001. In 2001, CN offered me a bridging to sit home until I retired in 2005.
Hi Laurie,
I started photographing Turcot Yards after it closed in 2003 and have become interested in it's history. I would like to know more about what it was like to work there, especially in the "steam" era when the roundhouse was still going. There really is a story slooooowly emerging and I am considering putting something together if my "research" leads me there. You can check out my work at Turcot on my blog Walking Turcot Yards
(http://neath.wordpress.com), along with my ideas about contemporary urban developement.
All stories are good ones but if you don't think it would be interesteing to post here, please feel free to email me at neathatturcot@yahoo.ca

Thanks for the input Ken hf&rv
Kenny ,.here's the photo I came across years ago,..........as you can see the credit went to Al Leishman ( a photographer for the Montreal Star,at the time) became a good friend of ours ( my brother moreso),.......... but it's a cool picture nevertheless: À six heures du matin, l'autoroute Décarie est ouverte à la circulation. ....that's the synopsis of the story,....now here's the picture: ...Here's a smaller version of the photo & the credit info etc etc,......

Les. I went over about 1:30 AM and the snow was just starting. I have a local farmer clean the driveway with his tractor usually he starts around Jan. so far this year he has been six times. Ron.
Montreal Gazette said that they could get 60 centimeters that is 24 inches. So glad that my sister has snow removal service. Last year she whined because there was no snow until January so she thought that she was paying for nothing since they make you pay by the season but for sure she is getting moneys worth this year.
that would be a YIKES !! 6 times ,already this year,.......aside from all the Global Warming stuff,......... the OldFarmersAlmanac, suggested that this year would be 'snowier' than usual ( for Eastern Canada),...... the farmers alamnac has a good track record in being fairly accurate, Hope you guys don't get too many more storms,6 is enough: I was talking to a friend of mine in Montreal & they said they still had snow from last weeks snowfall............ Remember this project ,always referred to as 'a white elephant' The Mirabel Airport..........unfortunately it was very forward thinking,as the estimates for Montreals population was to increase by millions, until the political misteps, which caused a mass exodus of corporate & civilans alike,......and quickly ky-bosshed Montreal's growth. This airort would have serviced Montreal and allowed for growth towards Mirabel, but it was not to be,too bad really it was a state of the srt airport in it's day, that never really ever reached any where near it's potential, I was fortunate enough to get a first hand look all around the place ,due to my girlfriend's dad worked there, and I was able to see the airport first hand from the runways and everywhere else,.It was huge.......and could have been a great assett ,but asa we all know it just didn't happen: HF&RV

JMH this shot is listed as being the Post Office on Racine Av Bureau de Poste ,sur rue Racine It would be interesting to see a modern day picture of this same area, I would imagine they would have kept a nice old building like this post office? HF&RV
Hi Les
Where do you guys dig up such wonderful pictures of Quebec?
I really look forward to the next pictures, but I'm wondering where this picture is from. I'm not familiar with rue Racine . Fabulous pictures.

hello onesmac ,.that shot is of Chicoutami (sp?) .I was wondering if JMH (JeanMarieHachey) one of our members who lives in Chicoutami knew if this area was satill somewhat the same? I dig up these pictures from everywhere but lately many have come from BNQ You will all have maybe a bit of a break,as I'm headed to Chilliwack tomorow & then to Kamloops for a day or two, then back to NorthVan for a family reunion ......then back to Victoria....... but I will check in via 'hotspots' on the way or friends homes ,providing they have wireless...... So I will try to post a few more photos over the coming days,........If anyone out there would like to see ,some parts of the province that I haven't posted then just ask,I'd be happy to try & find some more Verdun/Montreal or LaBelle Province stuff.............Ask away. Also we'd all like to again invite all members to post some real Verdun Photos that they may have kicking around,......We all appreciate them: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, I agree with you Les, there must be other old Verdun photos laying around in members old shoe boxes that could be posted fo us to enjoy showing various landmarks. I make copies for our archive (shgv) and also take photos of same spots to compare. Guy
Hello guy, Have you heard anything new about any historic finds at the Maison St Dizier ,big dig ? I wonder what they could find ,as behind the building it almost immediately slipped away down the river bank, within what seems only a few yards... I would bet under that land fill (all te way down to river level ,they may find something, but you would think they would have done long ago, beofre extending the greenbelt......... but all around the house may turn up interesting things. Imagine some of the 'history' that has been washed down the river, almost never to be seen again........ HF&RV
Les, Archealogical research has already been done around Maison St Dizier some years ago and discoveries have been made such as old clay pipes and arrow heads. Results of this reasearch are not widely known and I will see if we have them at the society. As far as the new research, in the immediate vicinity of the buiding and particularly the inside of the building, these may go on for the balance of the year and perhaps into 2009, the results should be known within the year following we hope. I will advise everyone once the results are known publically. I am posting the following map wich was published in 1919 showing very important historical information such as the fact that Jacques Cartier visited Verdun in 1535 as well as an indian village wich was situated in LaSalle near Verdun as shown on the map. Other historical information is shown. Another interesting fact is the exhistance of the Lac à la Loutres also called Petit Lac St Pierre wich was situated at the Turcot yards and surrounding area. I find it unfortunate that history is not a priority in schools today to teach the beginnings of our communities. Guy
Thanks Guy , we'll rely on you for some future info...........so old Jacques wandered around Verdun.......that's neat. HF&RV
Hi Les
I've never been to Chicoutami. The heard the place mentioned many times in my life. It looks, from all the pictures like a pretty interesting place to visit.
Have fun in Kamloops etc. I'm going over to Victoria for a few days on July 21st. I love Victoria and think it would be a wonderful spot to live after retirement.
