Around LaBelle Province

Someone mentioned a few weeks ago, that they spent a lot of time around the Missisqoui area,..............   would you recognize this street ?

            Rue Principale ,Bedford, Missisquoi 1951................
I like the small town look,.Remember how a lot of Quebec looked, once you left the Island of Montreal.....you went from big city to Rural Quebec in a hurry,..............but it always made the drive to the States by those old back roads ,so much more of an adventure,.rather than the very sterile boring highways of today,......(but it was alot slower going ,I will admit,.but that's what made it a 'trip' ........

Les. I thought about saying something about the drive to Burlington, (St Albans) Vermont. The Drive down that way has not changed much. Still have farmers areas all the way down, then thru a little country village. Beautiful!!!!! Keep posting the good stuff, Les. It is wonderful, and reminds us all of the idealic times we had as youngsters. I was going to ask if you thought our kids or grandkids  felt the same way we did, on the trips we take them on. I think I answered myself already. They are watching tv or playing video games, and rarely pay attention to the surrounding views. Maybe notice the Space Needle...when it is pointed out.

Hi Winston,.I guess sometimes we just want out kids/grandkids to see what we see.?? Ok found it,...............It was bugging me about the Royal Family giving Swans to the town of Swanton,...so here it is,,,,,,,,,Queen Elisabeth 1963 John Barren in his book KGB : The Secret Work of Soviet Secret Agents tells of two KGB agents coming to Swanton to ascertain if there was a rocket base here. Two swans, Sam and Elizabeth, were given to Wanton by Queen Elizabeth to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Swanton charter. Village Trustee Harold Bliss died.   gave then to the town celebrating 200 years of the towns Charter                         (knew I'd find it..............hahahahahah) A Short History of Swanton, Vermont A massive glacier covered all of New England 15,000 years ago and more than a mile of ice capped portions of northwestern Vermont. These millions upon millions of tons fo ice depresed the earth's crust, bringing it below sea level. Some 12,500 years ago the glacier retreated north of the St. Lawrence lowland. Salt water flowed in from the Altantic Ocean to fill the depression in the St. Lawrence basin, thus creating the Champlain Sea. An arm of the sea extended into the Champlain Valley where it remained for the next 2,300 years. During this period, the land ecompassed by the town of Swanton underwent significant changes. Eventually the Champlain Sea disappeared. Lake Champlain was born, and the Missisquoi River flowed out across the extensive deposits of asand and silt that once covered the bottom of the sea. Few people, if any, witnessed these changes. However, people were not far behind. here;s the link for anyone who wants to read any more of this town http://www.swantonhistoricalsociety.org/main/walking_tour.asp

Another rather infamous place,...but a fact of life in Montreal,.was the old Jail Bordeaux.....................    it held (among other things) a lot of Quebec History,       one of the Historic Cases was the one of Wilbert Coffin(who Btw ended up in one)...............and I think one of the last to be 'stretched' at Bordeaux (but guilt has always been ,questionable) ........................?? Some may Remember the case .............. The Wilbert Coffin Case Bordeaux Jail
Montreal, Qu챕bec
February 10, 1956 February 10th, 1956 was a cold day in Montreal. At the Bordeau Jail, a death flag flew and a chime sounded seven times announcing that a man was about to die. That man was Wilbert Coffin. Wilbert Coffin was a mining prospector and experienced woodsman from York Centre, in the County of Gasp챕, Qu챕bec. The unspoiled wilderness of the Gasp챕 region made it a popular spot for American outdoorsmen. Three such outdoorsmen arrived from Pennsylvania in 1953. They never returned home. Their bodies were found in a forest. They had been murdered. The last person to have seen any of them alive was Wilbert Coffin. Wilbert Coffin, had been seen with the youngest of the three Americans at a gas station. He had purchased a pump to repair the pickup truck the Americans were driving. The case proved to be complicated without an eye witness, the prosecution had to rely heavily on circumstantial evidence. After much deliberation, the jury found Wilbert Coffin guilty of murdering one of the hunters. The mandatory sentence was death by hanging. The sentence was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. There, a majority of justices affirmed the judgments of the lower courts. Wilbert Coffin was again found guilty, and returned to Bordeaux Jail in Montreal to await his execution. Many were upset by the ruling. They believed Wilbert Coffin to be innocent that his conviction relied solely on circumstantial evidence. (Senator Jacques H챕bert, a journalist at the time, was cited for contempt of court for his subsequent articles on the case.) Increasingly, Canadians questioned the death penalty. One of the best arguments against the death penalty has always been the possibility of error. (For example, Canadians such as Donald Marshall, David Milgaard, Guy Paul Morin were all found guilty of charges whose penalties were death. They were all later proven innocent and released.) The argument against the death penalty eventually won Canadians over and the practise was abolished in 1976. Sadly, this came to late for Wilbert Coffin. Despite his appeals for clemency and his claims of innocence, Wilbert Coffin was executed on February 10, 1956. If Wilbert Coffin was innocent, it is a mistake that can never be corrected.   ............................Just a little more History from Around La Belle Province

I'm a real fan of the Von Trapps and Sound of Music, etc. Don and I drove up to their place in Stowe, Vermont many years ago. We missed Maria Von Trapp by just a couple of days - she was in Austria buying gifts, souvenirs and stuff to bring back to their gift shop in Stowe.....very beautiful stuff in that shop. We also sat out on the terrace and had a lovely German dessert - the view from that terrace was just spectacular - you could see for miles and miles. Just last month, the Von Trapp grandchildren(3 daughters & 1 son of Kurt)...anyway they were on a musical tour and I went to see them.  They were just fantastic!!!  It was their last tour as the son is just reaching puberty and his angelic soprano voice is starting to crack so they won't be touring anymore.  It was really a thrill though - they are so talented! judy in NB

les__f MSN said...

hi Carver3570,.....apperently Abolishment of the Death Penalty took several private members bills being brouught forward, starting in 1961,.before Trudeau took up politics,......Here's some information I came across, from Amnesty International site,...   There were 710 executions in Canada between 1867 and 1962. The last execution was carried out on December 11, 1962 when 2 men were hanged in Toronto, Ontario. Between 1879 and 1960, there were 438 commutations of death sentences.   The Death Penalty in Canada: Twenty Years of Abolition
Historical Background Between 1892 and 1961, the penalty for all murders in Canada was death by hanging. In 1961, an act of Parliament divided murder into capital and non-capital categories. The first private bill calling for abolition of the death penalty was introduced in 1914. In 1954, rape was removed from capital offenses. In 1956, a parliamentary committee recommended exempting juvenile offenders from the death penalty, providing expert counsel at all stages of the proceedings and the institution of mandatory appeals in capital cases. Between 1954 and 1963, a private member's bill was introduced in each parliamentary session calling for abolition of the death penalty. The first major debate on the issue took place in the House of Commons in 1966. Following a lengthy and emotional debate, the government introduced and passed Bill C-168, which limited capital murder to the killing of on-duty police officers and prison guards. On July 14, 1976 the House of Commons passed Bill C-84 on a free vote, abolishing capital punishment from the Canadian Criminal Code and replacing it with a mandatory life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years for all first-degree murders. Canada retained the death penalty for a number of military offenses, including treason and mutiny. No Canadian soldier has been charged with or executed for a capital crime in over 50 years. On 10 December, 1998, the last vestiges of the death penalty in Canada were abolished with the passage of legislation removing all references to capital punishment from the National Defence Act. There were 710 executions in Canada between 1867 and 1962. The last execution was carried out on December 11, 1962 when 2 men were hanged in Toronto, Ontario. Between 1879 and 1960, there were 438 commutations of death sentences   ,,,,,,,,,,,Seems odd that it took so long to be completely abolished.......(1998) Effectively though it's been not used since 1961 or 62??? http://www.amnesty.ca/deathpenalty/canada.php.   (a live direct link to the host site of the above information)....................... ..................I thought it was gone a long time ago,.but I haven't found any evidence as to Trudeau initiating it,or implementing it.  but it seems that 1975 is an instrumental year ,in officially abolishing it,.and so I would think it was certainly his Gov'ts stamp on it.???

les__f MSN said...

I should correct that ,I mentioned that the start of the call for abolishing the Death Penalty in Canada, started with Provate Members Bills from 1961,. but I missed the paert where it was first introduced as a Private Members Bill, as Far Back as 1914,..............then re-intorduced in the early 60's

Between now and mid-June 12 more cameras will be installed further north, between Sherbrooke St. and Duluth St. The Montreal police are also in consultations with police commanders in 39 neighbourhoods regarding another surveillance zone that has yet to be determined. Project Robot Cam began in 2004 with four cameras installed on St. Denis St., near Berri-UQAM metro. Officials say the results have been very positive, with drug dealers becoming more discreet. Property crimes are down by 38 per cent and crimes against persons have dropped eight per cent.
With 18 cameras along the two sections of St. Laurent, the Montreal police hope to reduce violent crimes and crimes related to street gangs in the area, which has seen several outbreaks of gunfire recently.
...................Seems there are a lot of Street Gangs, these days,.there has always been gangs,..but apparently these ones around today,.are quite Violent, the big thing will be ,What they Do or what they really use the video for,. will they arrest the culprits? or will they just be watching everyone,..& really do nothing????

IF, and I stress IF, it  cuts down on crime, and also helps to catch some of these hoodlums (as we use to call them), gang members. It is a good thing. I know in London, England, the police can follow a vehicle, on a constant basis, coming into london, until it leaves. Now that is, big brother watching.

Love those lilacs, Les.  When I was younger (yesterday) I used to steal lilacs from neighbours because I love flowers and couldn't afford them.  Always was a cheap date!  You know, forget the diamonds, just give me flowers!  lol.   We have two lilac bushes under our bay window in front and I can hardly wait for them to bloom.  Being Edmonton, that should be about the end of May/beginning of June.  We're finally getting some rain here. One thing I love about this place is that when it rains, it rains at night and then you wake up, open the door to get the newspaper and there is that smell of spring and the grass is greener from the day before.    Flowers are my luxury and today I have a flower garden that nourishes me.  Nothing like lying on a hammock on a summer's day with a good book swating bees! Hey, Les,  I'm one of those dinosaurs who believes that we should return to dirigible travel.  Filled with helium instead of hydrogen, it becomes a very safe method of transportation.  Slower than jet travel maybe but given how much environmental damage current aircraft generate I'd trade some of my precious time for a planet that will continue to support human life.  I also feel the same about trains. Bring 'em back as people movers I say.  Slow down.  Live longer. Geniegal

les__f MSN said...

Hello   Genie ,........Si Si I Agree...............................hahahahahaha

guy5479 MSN said...

The problem with diriibles is they are very unstable in bad weather due to their size and light weight. Many dirigibles went down and were destroyed since their inception for those reasons, not to mention lightning. However, they may have their use in specific applications provinding their size is limited. New technologies have encouraged entrepreneurs in the U.K., Germany and perhaps other countries to build these crafts. I recall seing on TV one of these ships being demonstrated and they had all the trouble possible to control the craft in high winds and the trial had to be cancelled.   Guy

...That sounds like a lot of 'hotair'...........................hahahahahaha  I think I did see that show too Guy,.....Dirigibles don't make much sense, too unreliable ,(subject to weather I mean) I think they are already experimenting with the thought of having a 'sub orbital flight' where the aircraft actually enters space,(low level orbit) and re-enters & lands ,.this way No Fuel is used other than to adjust direction,........

Les,
Great picture of The Orange Crush Bottling Plant. Any idea where it was? Years later Orange Crush had a new plant that you could see from The CNR Deux-Montagnes electric commuter train not too long after the train pulled out of The Town of Mount Royal Station. I remember the 7up plant in the Town of Mt Royal. Pepsi used to have a plant just off Park Avenue near Outremont and then they moved in 1957 to the big plant on Namur (Jean-Talon) Street near Decarie. Remember Joan Crawford opened the Pepsi plant with a lot of hoopla. Coca-Cola had three plants in Montreal. The one on Upper Lachine Road used to give tours and they would give you a miniature Coke bottle at the end of the tour. I wish I had held on to those bottles. Orange Crush is still a big selling product in West Palm Beach. Grape Crush is popular also. You can buy it in 2 liter bottles, 20 ounce bottles, 12 ounce cans and in six packs of glass bottles. Diet Orange & Diet Grape Crush are also sold. I used to like the old brown Orange Crush bottles-Fresco

Hey Les!    RE:Bordeaux Jail In 1953, I 'signed on' with Bell Tel.Co. (North District, MTL) as a Telephone Installer. They put me with a trained PBX man to start learning the job. One of the worst holes I worked in, was in the tunnels under Bordeaux Jail following a riot that ruined their Communications. The old cord switchboard was smashed up and the cable connecting to it it was cut off. Telephones were smashed! A crew of us went in and ran new wiring, while the trained PBX men replaced the switchboard. The tunnels were made with large rocks and mortar, dank and wet down under! Rats encountered and it was creepy, like something from a Boris Carloff film. On later repair visits I got some brown prisoner caps from the guards and spread them around to the younger lads. When management found out where they came from they flipped out! Ahh, how a picture can 'stir' memories!!!!! sez Victah

Ed Sullivan Born: Sep 28, 1902 in Manhattan, New York Died: Oct 13, 1974 in New York City, New York Occupation: Actor Active: '30s, '50s-'60s, '90s-2000s Major Genres: Music, Comedy Career Highlights: Senior Prom, The Ed Sullivan Show, Ed Sullivan: Topo Gigio and Friends First Major Screen Credit: Mr. Broadway (1933) BiographyThough he is most fondly remembered for his TV hosting duties of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, New York newspaper columnist Ed Sullivan was a show business personality as far back as 1932. Hired by the CBS network as a potential rival for radio commentator Walter Winchell, Sullivan took to the air with a heady combination of gossip and entertainment. Among the future radio luminaries introduced on Sullivan's program were Jack Benny and Jack Pearl (aka Baron Munchhausen). In 1933 Sullivan made his film debut in Mr. Broadway, which he also wrote. His subsequent screenplay and story contributions included the screwball comedy There Goes My Heart (1938) and the Universal "pocket" musical Ma, He's Making Eyes at Me (1940). In 1947, he entered the fledgling medium of television to host a variety hour titled Toast of the Town, later re-christened The Ed Sullivan Show. Though hardly a likely candidate for TV stardom -- he appeared to have a permanently stiff neck, wandered aimlessly around the stage, slurred his words ("Rilllly big shew!"), and frequently mispronounced the names of his guest stars -- Sullivan remained a Sunday night fixture until his series left the air in 1971. As an adjunct to his TV fame, he appeared as "himself" in such films as Bye Bye Birdie (1961), The Patsy (1964), and The Singing Nun (1965), and was parodied by countless impressionists, most notably Will Jordan. To three generations of rock music fans, Ed Sullivan will always be remembered for those five immortal words, "Here they are -- THE BEATLES!" ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide     Yikes Fresco ,.it goes back to 1947: In 1947, he entered the fledgling medium of television to host a variety hour titled Toast of the Town, later re-christened The Ed Sullivan Show.                             HF&RV

I wonder if I'm the only old geek who remembers the show when it was Toast of The Town? Excellent catch on your part. I have a bone to pick with Ed Sullivan. When I was 16 the organist at St.John Divine on Moffat changed jobs and could no longer play the evening service. The spare organist was an elderly woman with a bad habit, when she made a mistake she would say 'OH SHIT' loud enough to be audible at the back of the Church and she would start over from the beginning leaving everyone totally lost. The priest heard me playing piano at a party and decided I was the organist needed for Sunday Evensong. I wasn't too pleased as it was a massive Hammond but I after a month I had the hang of it and was rolling right along. Over the next few weeks the congregation got constantly smaller. I was sure it must be my playing and worried that I was emptying the Church. Day after day I walked the streets waiting for that final lightening bolt. I was certain God would not take this laying down. Then they cancelled the evening service. I knew I was in trouble. I didn't know if they still did things Biblically but I moved all the rocks away from the Church to be on the safe side. One day wearing dark glasses with my pork pie pulled down low over my forehead I walked right into the Pastor. He said, "Edward it's too bad we had to cancel the evening service but everyone is staying home to watch Ed Sullivan. By the way you played really well." Howdya like that I was a qualified organism. Hi Les, Good place to put this. Some places give food donated by grocery stores such as vegetables which are useless to street people without a home and fridge.
To combat this problem most Churches offer soup kitchens like St.Willibrords 3 days per week.
Also, with money earned from their sales, St.Willibrords buys tons of sustainable foods such as cans, Kraft Dinner and sliced cheese and canned ham. Great for kid's school lunches. By buying so much from 1 or 2 supermarkets the discount earned helps pay for the Christmas dinner.

Les, This subject of wasting food brings up the problem of undernourished people around the world. We overheat, overindulge and waste food all the while half the world population goes to bed ungry. We spend more time and money on pet animals and we close our eyes to the suffering of human beings.. We should at least take a part of our income and give to world organisations such as the UNICEF to help alleviate this suffering. Guy

happydi2 MSN said...

Guy I agree with you on that. I think it is disgusting the amount of money people will spend on their pets and wouldn't give a dime to UNICEF or donate to the food banks, or other causes to help the poor.   Obesity caused by overindulgence in in this part of the world is terrible and causes so many health problems and the millions spent on health care is atrocious.   I am a pet owner and love my dog.   Dianne

I actually think, that if we (as individuals ) took the time to help anyone (without being asked),.help them in some small way,.it could be a neighbour ,a stranger,.a kid,.or whoever,.....I'd rather live like that,.than donate to a faceless corporation ,.to make myself'feel' better,.... Be a better Person when you can,.....and not when it's convienent (sp?)   but the fact that people are starving in many country's in the world ,does not excuse the deadbeats Downtown Everywhere,.from taking Donated Food,.and throwing it in the streeet,.cause they don't like it...... We have some serious problems right Here at home ( North America),...and we should attend to those first,.......... Perhaps some of our 'so called' world leaders ,should not be allowed to just allocate funds to supposed poor countries,.when we know ,that the People who really need it ,.are not getting most of it ,in those countries either,.... So if we can't trust our own World Leaders who know that people are still starving & dying of sickness all over the world,.then we should clean up Our own act here,..Then Help others later,........This would be Leading by example,................No one on this planet should go hungry ,...whatsover,.... for all the reasons you mentioned:      but there are no easy fix's ,.so do what we can ,when we can,.in whatever little way we can,....and hope for the best: There has been Trillions & Trillions of USD's spent to keep a war going ,....I wonder how many people could have had a few meals, with that dough:

Oh Ok I always get a laugh out of these nuts protesting everything,.....Out here we've got every protester you can think of,.but I have to laugh when I see what the cause is,...So these bugwings in Montreal tie up traffic for hours,.slowing everyone down,.all the while the cars & trucks & bus's are all tied up burning more fuel and creating more exhaust than needed... besides most of them are nuts ,who don't have anything better to do.........hahahahaha  I mean some causes are Ok ,but they should try to do it right,....... The City should Ban Bikes form Most roads ,.so traffic can travel quicker...............hahahahaha   Hey Walter I see in one photo that your driving a new Nitro ,.that's what Our son in Edmonton bought ,..just traded his Hemi 4x4 P/u ,.for a new Nitro.....he likes it,.......but it cause it's better on fuel than the Hemi.... Did you buy that one or just rent it to go to Quebec,& save putting miles on your own rig?...   anyway Thanks again for uploading the new photo's ....Much Appreciated                                                                                               HF&RV

People watching is always a neat thing to do,..............Years ago I took a picture of a homeless guy who was pretending to take a picture of everyone going by,.So when I took out my camera & started taking his picture he couldn't figure it out.........hjahahahahaha   I have the pic somewhere,.if I Remember I'll dig it up & post it,..This guy was in Downtown Vancouver,so every town has it's characters.......and they all have a history ,.sometimes it's good to just talk to these individuals,.cause most people don't .....& it only takes a second to say anything to them,,,,,,,,,,             HF&RV
