Canadian International Paper
Sabby:
I see from your photos that you worked at Canadian International Paper. I worked there from 1967 (first job) until 1973. Bob Bisnett also worked there during the latter 60's. What years did you work there?
Well, well well, what a small world! I worked from 1970 until 1993. I worked in the engineering department for 20 years starting with Charlie Dormer, then Logistics, then marketing. I still keep in touch with some of the people. Never made it to the Quarter Century Club so don't get to go to their yearly party every fall. Gord and BobB, where the heck did you guys work? Your names don't ring a bell but then I was very young and shy! Dolly
I was at CIP in around 1966 - 68 sometime. I had dropped out of University and then went back around 68. I worked in the Mail Room, then Office Services for Jan Dilla and then in the Computer Dept. Then I went back to University.
Gerry was one of the multilith operators in Office Services. I was the "kid" in the office at that time. Wish I was a kid now.
I do remember Greg Lee in the Computer Dept. Doubt if I would recognize him on the street now, but we were only a few in Computer Operations at that time ...maybe 6 or 7. He was one of the gang there. Sonny Espley was another guy in Operations, but he didn't stay long. Doug Doherty was our manager. I can't recall other names at the moment, but I'd likely recognize them if I heard them.
Other names in the Computer Dept. were Bill Telford, Paul McGee, Dave Laing. A crew of charactars, but a good lot.
Donny Spitacine worked at CIP as well. Accounting or something I think. He lived a few doors away from me on Rolland Ave.
Then there was Charlie Hilliker in Office Services. He was the Shipper. A charactar, buit a real decent man. an intelligent well read man too. In 1970 when I had left and was back at University, my dad died from a sudden heart attack. Charlie saw the notice in the paper and showed up in a suit at the Funeral Home. touched my heart forever. God bless him.
Wow. what a small world. I never thought I'd see a picture of Sonny. Yes, I did go to VCHS. Graduated in '65. Went to college at the ripe old age of 16 !!!!!! That's why I dropped out initially.
No I wasn't in on the CIP hockey team. To be honest I didn't even know there was one. But I do remember someone in Purchasing (I think) who was supposed to be a great player, but was too small to be an NHL hopeful. Ah , my memory is failing...I can't remember a name.
Can't say I remember Mike Walsh, but the way memories work, it will probably come to me this week sometime and I'll go....of course !!!!
I remember Gerri being Sonny's girlfriend though. See it is coming back. This is like regressive hypnosis !!
You're bringing back memories I didn't know I had.
Sandy, see what happens with posting one photo! Did you start working at CIP right after the motherhouse? Was that your first job? Bob, I went to VCHS also. Sandy was a year ahead of me. I graduated in 1963. I don't recall your name but then I had no social life (ha!) until I was 21. I remember Jan Dylla who was the manager in office services. He was Polish and a real flirt. Yes, Charlie Hilliker. A fine man. Funny how I still remember him. There was also a Roger, but I don't recall his last name. I also remember Doug Doherty. Other names: Bruce Chisholm, Tom Chalmers, Ian McArthur, Nord Lord, Geoff Hughson, John Waldron, Charlie Dormer..... I didn't recall CIP having a hockey team either but yes I remember Mike Ortuso too. Dolly
Mike Ortuso lived exactly one block over from us on Wellington,.......they lived btwn Galt & Church on the S side of Wellington,............(near the Biscuit store)Second Floor,...............while we lived btwn Gordon & Galt mid block 2nd floor ( 2ieme etage) for those keeping track............hahahahahahaHe played hockey,...................I wonder if the Ian Macarthur you mention was from the MacArthur family ,who lived on Wellington (2nd floor) for those keeping tabs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahah right beside us,..........the father was LeslieMacArthur,.who worked in the Elevator trade ,.along with Our friend (Jimmy) kungfu,..who Btw ,.we haven't heard from for a while lately,..........
Yes, I remember Roger...he was in Office Services too. An older man with a cane I think. Mike Ortuso...that's the name. Great memories. Wayne Feeney...yes I remember that name. . BobB
Hi Sandy, and Bob, Boy it's neat how names pop up in VC and it "rings a bell"! Bob you mentioned a Bill Telford, I knew a Telford ,did this guy have red hair?(this is a real longshot !) I know the name Spitacine, but it's his sister, My brother went to V.C.H with Donny . Sandy, you mentioned St Joseph's Teacher's College .My Mom worked there for quite a few years. I went to V,C,H and graduated in "67. ,so we probably didn't cross paths? Anyway ,just wanted to pit in my 2 cents. It's fun to hear names we once knew! B.F.N. Sharon
Hi Sandy,.yes you'd be correct in me living next to the Savoy,...then if you 'are' following,.you know I also mentioned living right nextdoor (2nd floor) but nextdoor above the Guardian, btwn Rielle & Gordon on Verdun North side,......also if your still following along I mentioned I also lived right next door to Norman's Patates frites,.on Wellington across from Sally shops,..and New Verdun Restaurant (yes there was another new VerdunRestaurant,.which moved to the middle of the block from the corner (Gordon & Wellington NE corner)......and I do believe I've posted pics from all of those locations...............hahahahaSee why I can talk to the cops for hours & really say nothing,......I cover the bases...............hahahahahahaha Cheers .............& reveal little....hahahahaHow's our favourite sister doing,.......2008 is coming soon,.......and I'm sure Bill (the smartest Prez for quite some time .......is anxious to try his old house key again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This thread seemed to generate a lot more action than I thought it would. I started in the mailroom in 1967 just after Bob B. I then went to the Insurance Department where I worked for Steve Knox and Frank Landolt. I remember that for some reason I was given a copy of the company payroll and there was Irving Hobart Peck coming in at $65,000. annually, somewhat more than my annual salary of $3,500. Played hockey with CIP every Wednesday at Westhill Arena. We went to Dalhousie to give these guys a lesson in hockey and then got thrashed - however the beer was good. We had a rematch in Montreal and won this time. Mike Ortuso played in the Montreal game and this certainly helped our cause. Mike played Major Junior A hockey and was way out of our league. Murray Goldfarb also played on the team and was an excellent player - one of the few Jewish players that played hockey. Some other names that come to mind: Brock Howell ( Lasalle) I believe that he still works at CIP. Ken Hanson (Richard Avenue) Tim Bracken (Leclair) Ian McGregor (Melrose) Don Spittachine (Allard ?) Mr. Rosevear (Bannantine and Melrose) Manager of Tax Department Bob Jones Webb Stanley Gord Gibbons Brampton, Ontario
As for Mike Ortuso,.........I Remember him being incredibly good as a Hockey Player ( my memory may be wrong ,.but he either made or could havemade) the Verdun Maple Leafs,..in terms of talent) ,.but the knock was size.........too bad ,Annother name you mentioni Bracken,.......was he related to Harold Bracken ,.a FireChief for the City of Montreal > ( Point St Charles area actually).....I beleive his daughtesrs lived in Verdun,.....(maybe neices).............and the Spittachine name also sounds familiar ,.as I beleive we have a member here on the Verdun Connections,site.,.......(Mark is it???) who has a Radio Program in Montreal................................if all this is so: then it really is indeed a small world.......................
I knew Mike Ortuso when he lived in Victoriatown ( the village ). We both went to D'Arcy McGee High School at the time.We both played hockey there and had some great games against VCHS which had players like Gary Kennedy and Ron Doyle and also VHS who had guys like John Sherry and Gary Butler to name but a few. In 1964, Mike, another fellow named Gerry Ryan and I all moved to Verdun and transferred to VCHS for our final year of High School.. He was a terrific hockey player and in fact for you older hockey buffs who may remember the California Golden Seals ,(remember the white skates), Mike attended their Training camp.
Lots of things here. I remember a Mr. Verschoor as well. but I can't place him ... re a Dept. Also , Jack Williams. He worked in CIP's Office Services for Jan Dylla.
Gord, you mentioned Irving Hobart Peck. That's a name I remembered all these years. When there was a board meeting, I would go up (or down..I forget) to the Exec Offices and rearrange the chairs and tables in prep for the meeting. Then I greeted all these old geezers and took their hats and coats and hung them up while they were in the Board Meeting. Peck's nickname was "chick". Very original. Trust me....I never called him that.
The Corprate Secretary was Charlotte VanDine. This is scary....I must have nothing of value in my mind the way these names are coming back.
A couple of stories I remember from CIP.....
An individual was stopped by police for driving down St. Catherine Street wearing a Gorilla head or Mask. Somehow Wayne Feeney's name keeps coming up in my mind. Anyone remember that episode?
Then someone I worked with or knew came in one morning and told me he had been drinking the night before and as he crossed the street coming to the Sun Life Building, he stopped in front of cars stopped at the light and threw up on the street. He paused, looked at the drivers, waved and carried on to work. Can't remember who it was. It has stayed with me. It struck me as a very funny sight. Gord, do you recall anything like that ?
Another thing I remember was (when I worked in the mailroom) having to go to Mr. Volk's (a VP) office each morning and put water in a silver water jug on his desk. I was told that a predecesor of mine had added green food colouring to the water one morning. This story came from old Dan McKertcher who ran the mailroom at the time. I later met the chap who did this (can't recall his name) when he came back to visit. I was really impressed because he came in with his camera and told me he was a freelance photographer and sold pictures to the Montreal Star. When you're a teenager this is very impressive!!
And Les, you mentioned that there is a Spitacine in the Verdun Connections membership. I believe he is a cousin or nephew to Donny.
As my buddy Andre Thibault would say....souvenirs, Bob....great souvenirs !!!
Hi McGee5115,................. seems to me there was a few in the Ortuso family,.when they lived on Wellington,...........I didn't know he lived in the village ,an my guess is that Mike Ortuso couldn't be much older than (closing in on 60 ????) if that................. I wonder if the Golden Seals opportunity came from the Charlie Hodge ,era,.and the GM (from Montreal ) he was on TV too,.....what was his name............Here's some history:1967/68: The Seals were among 6 expansion teams as the NHL doubled in size. At first experts predicted the California Seals to be the best team in the Western Division with the other 5 expansion teams. The Seals would get off to a fast start winning their first 2 games and tying their 3rd. However, it was all down here from then as the Seals ended up finishing dead last with a dreadful record of 15-42-17. Along the way the Seals would changes names and becoming the Oakland Seals on December 8th as the Seals failed to draw any fans with the name California Seals, as rumors of a move to Vancouver surrounded the first year team. Here's a link to some of the Seals History,..................maybe there's mention of Mike ................ http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/caloak/seals I do seem to Remember Mike either trying out for the Verdun Maple Leafs ,....and maybe even played for them,.....perhaps via an NHL teams rights.??????????? Not really sure about that,.....but I'm sure about his being a really good Hockey Player..................(still recall some other sibling s though).......I also seem to Remember a connection to some good Hockey players from Verdun,.....by the name of Redmond,............(don't know if tey were related to the Mickey & /or Dennis variety...........)
How about Bing Crosby as one of the owners................................. Welcome to my Web site on the Seals, the NHL's forgotten treasure. While the Seals never had a winning team in their nine seasons in the NHL, the club was never dull. It joined the league with the "Second Six" in 1967, and the franchise had troubles almost from day one. Money was always a problem for the Seals as was a lack of attendance. The club had a diverse collection of owners and ownership groups that included crooner Bing Crosby, Pat Summerall, ex-NFL stars Earl Morrall and Dick Lynch, hotel magnate Mel Swig, Barry van Gerbig, the NHL itself and, of course, Charles O. Finley. Rumors that the club might move started just a month or two after they played their first game. At one time or another, the Seals were heading to Vancouver, Buffalo, Indianapolis, San Francisco or anywhere else you can think of. The move was contested in Federal court. Meanwhile, the team filed for bankruptcy in 1970. They were then bought by Finley, who proceeded to lose more money for the franchise. On the ice, things were always happening to the club as well. The only on-ice fatality in NHL history occurred in 1968 in a game between the Seals and the Minnesota North Stars when Bill Masterton hit his head on the ice, went into a coma and died. The Seals also wore green and gold skates for one season. The next year they changed to white skates, which (according to one player) made it look like they were skating on stumps when people watched the team on TV since the skates blended in with the ice. A woman also streaked across the ice on skates during a home game in a plan that was engineered by one of pro sports' first professional cheerleaders, the inventor of the wave, "Krazy George" Henderson. Krazy George was a fixture at Seals home games and made crowds of 5,000 sound louder than 15,000 people. During the team's last two years in the league, their mascot was Sparky the Seal, drawn by "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz, who was also a season-ticket holder The Seals also had many outstanding and colorful players on the team including Gary "Suitcase" Smith, Gary Simmons, Gilles Meloche, Dennis Maruk, Reggie Leach, Ivan Boldirev, Carol Vadnais, Ron Stackhouse, Bert Marshall and Harry Howell. Future NHL GMs Craig Patrick and Marshall Johnston also played for the Seals, as did future coaches like Tom Webster, Terry Murray, Larry Popein, Gene Ubriaco and Charlie Burns. Bill Torrey, who later built the Islanders dynasties of the '80s got his NHL start with the Seals, as did play-by-play announcers Tim Ryan and Joe Starkey. ..............Sorry I can't recall the name of the guy who had something to do with the Seals organization,.......but he use to be on the TV telecast from montreal prior to heading to the Westcoastt........................who wasd he ,.......help me .....hahahhaha
Well you know what they say about 7 degrees of separation. I wonder what ever happened to Mike Ortuso? He was such a bundle of energy. Webb Stanley eventually ended in Insurance and Rosevear did tax and was kinda solemn and grumpy. Verschoor I think worked in finance or accounting it seems to me and yes I remember Jack Williams also. Peck was president when I came on board and then Cecil Flenniken. I remember Charlotte Vandine and Wayne Feeney was another flirt. Does anyone remember Mr. Maxwell who was VP Finance? He had a heart attack and died in his office the last day before he retired! I was editor of the employee newsletter called Look and then changed the name and cover to Cambium when I took over. I did profiles of staff from the switchboard ladies (does anyone else remember the plug ins---is this the party to whom I'm speaking) and the receptionist who later was Camille someone (very attractive) and later Joanne Crux. CIP was my 4th job after graduating from the Motherhouse Sandy. I wasn't involved in the extra curricular activities at CIP because I was busy going to night school taking Fine Arts, worked in the theatre and rehearsals, etc. Used to come into work on one hour's sleep and somehow could still function! Ha! Had more energy then! I still keep in touch with some employees. Linda Merlin is one and she worked in Exec and ended in Systems before she retired a couple years ago. The company is now called Avenor and is a shell of what it used to be in the early seventies. There are only 25 employees left. This way they didn't have to worry about the language laws. Dolly
Don't know if same Ian McArthur, Les. This one was manager of the Trois Rivieres plant and then transferred to head office as manager newsprint division.
Hi Re Mike Ortuso remember seeing him driving 56 or 57 T Bird...on Wellington St. Good hockey player...Did he not have a brother who played hockey as well? Verdun Maple Leafs of that era good teams... Lad
I think your right,.(the Lad:) .....I was going to mention or ask that yesterday,.as they were fairly well known (it seems to me) ,.and I did think one brother did play at a higher level,..........the only knowck on Mike was size,.yet he played like he was twice that size,......Odd that a Henri Richard,.or an Yvan Cournyer,.......whose stature were not huge,.but their play was....the Verdun Maple Leafs of those days were fantastic to watch,.....with the likes,.of Guy Charron,.Guy Lapointe,..to name a couple,..........and a few years back i mentioned there was a defenseman by the name of 'Punch Cartier' who was even better than Lapointe ( hard to believe ,but he was at the time) He was drafted by Boston College team,......and you cannot find any eveidence of what ever happenned to him,.as he was Boston Bruin property,........but one of our members at the time Chuck Catto relayed that he was a tenacious player ,but He too was a victim of the 'not big enough ' theory.........too badJimmy (Kungfu) was it you that got us that info from Chuck and posted it for us at the time??? You were a friend of his (right?)..............his member ID wasDewline.............. rip Chuck:
Les Punch Cartier tough defenceman..think he went to University of Michigan.. and later on became member of City Council in Verdun....after hockey was done.Used to love going to the Aud on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons.. good seats, couple of steamies, great hockey..best part was chanting GO Leafs Go.. funny because am Habs fan...hahaha Lad
Hhahahaha I have to admit it certainly was the only time in my llife that I cheered for a Leafs Team,................................stricly a Habs Fan, that was a forgiveable blasphemy,......................hahahahaha I think it was .50 cents to go to a game,...... I think I might even still have a puck from the old Auditorium Days,.......I have one from the Forum,....but I think I have a Verdun one too...........(who knows what junk I've got saved somewhere......................hahahahaha So old Punch made it back to Verdun,......that's neat.............
Mike Ortuso has a younger brother Danny who played for Verdun's Jr A baseball team, that won the Canadian Championship. Shawn Clahane was also and that team and he was voted the tourney's MVP which entitled him to a tryout with the Expos
Good memory there Dave_NC,.......Danny Ortuso,........... I also knew the Cllahane family too...Your Dad was big into sports in Verdun too wasn't he? I seem to Remember you ( I think??) posting some good shots of the old VerdunStadium,.and the Cardinals Football Team.? I don't Remember what year it was from ,.but I guess early 60's,..... I Remember in 63 a friend of mine from school in those days,.his Uncle was a coach,....lastname was Barnoff,.......from the Bar B Barn ( Barnoff's,..Danny went to school with us,.................
Sandy: I worked in the Insurance Department with Steve Knox and Frank Landolt. Earl Rosevear is the father of Ken Rosevear. Ken was a fairly good ball player and I believe that he is now living in London, Ontario. I was fairly good friends with Brock Howell - we both lived in the Bronx Park part of LaSalle. I remember we used to go down to Ticonderoga for the Int. Paper Golf tournament. It was always a great time. Gord Gibbons Brampton, Ontario
I was trying to remember the name of the senior Office Boy. Gord Jones... Wow. I remember him coming into teh Mail Room one day when I worked there and showing off his new teeth that he had made. Thank God he didn't take them out. I was 17 or 18 and had never seen anything like that...nor have I since. Don't remember Wilson Gyton , though. Bet if he made his own teeth, I'd remember him too !!
Glad you saw Wayne Feeney the day he wore his Gorilla mask. At least they weren't pulling my leg....like that never happened !!
Ok I'm just going back over all the posts and this name came back to me from post #25,,,,The name ,.I couldn't think of then,.that left Montreal to particiapte with the California Golden Seals,.........was Frank Selke,.....................it was buggin me ,so I had to post it,..................hahahahahah and I know it doesn't follow the thread at this point,...sorry 'bout that chief'
Wow, Sandy, what a great memory! I do remember Ruth Wiseman (very quiet shy girl) and Gord Jones and his teeth and Frank Landolt, and Agnes Stevens! Comes back when you mention the names! Ha! I never got a tour of any mill. I understand they used to give tours to employees but I guess they ended them when I started. Brock sounds familiar though but not the other guy in Systems. Did you know Linda Merlin? It was a good company to work for. I had started at Imperial Tobacco and then left to work for 2 smaller firms which were hideous and decided I preferred working for a big company with benefits and opportunities. My thinking was that if you didn't like one department, you could always transfer to another. And I was right!
Les, you forgot to mention another famous "Montrealer" that went packing to the Seals. A shrewd Sam Pollack sent Ernie Hickey to the Seals in exchange for a draft pick. Pollack drafted Guy Lafleur. Not too shabby of a trade.
Les 5o cents to get in sounds about right...those were the days for good hockey. Remember the Leafs beating Quebec City Remparts in the memorial cup playoffs. They had a number 4 that year Guy Lafleur....good times.. Lad
the Lad: Yes Danny Barnoff lived on the bottom floor flat,.I Remember they had a fancy front door,.( or so we thought ) Remember if you had a bottom flat,..you were pretty much rich.................hahahahahahYes Danny also worked at the Bar B as well,.I wouldn't doubt if he's still with the family biz. ? I think he also lived in Florida for a while too.
hi Dave_NC ,..Sam Pollack was probably the most shrewd Hockey man of his time,.....and te Canadiens owe many of their super teams to his credit,....I do Remember the deal that brought Guy's draft choice to the Habs,.but i had Rememebered that the LA Kings were in the race as to who would end up with the 1 round draft pic ( which of course would be Lafleur),....and so with story was that Sam wanted to bolster the Kings team (instead of the Seals) ,.and so he sent Ralph to the Kings which immediately strenthened the Kings and they earned the 1st round draft pic,......(which Montreal had traded for previously) He hedfged his bets ,.and won,........ Good thing too,.Couldn't imagine a Guy Lafleur with the Kings or te Seals,.........Yikes,......... too bad the Habs didn't get Marcel as well....................Imagine those two together.............Here's a piece from an NHL page, Backstrom received his requested move when he was involved in a notorious transaction between Montreal and Los Angeles. In May 1970 shrewd Habs general manager Sam Pollock acquired the Oakland Seals' first-round pick with the hope that they'd finish last overall and give him a chance to draft junior star Guy Lafleur. Halfway through the 1970-71 season, it was clear that the L.A. Kings were having a sufficiently bad season to challenge for the first pick in the draft. Consequently, Backstrom was sent west in a move that gave him a new lease on life and boosted the Kings in the NHL standings. http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11896 .But Right you are it all started with the Trading of Ernie Hickey ,.which as the statement says Sam 'parlayed' into the Guy Lafleur acquisition........... ....The mans sure had fantastic insight,...as well as a really good network of talent scouts who report all these young talents,...........................................Thanks for the memory prompt Dave_NC those were some great times in Hockey (especially for a Habs fan)hahahahahah
Sorry Dav_NC I meant to add this ,about the Trade of Ernie Hickey,...in the previous post,...but hit the old 'send ' button to quickly,........ Here it is: Discussions: Worst Trades in NHL History - Calgary Flames Sam Pollack trades Ernie Hickey from Montreal to the Golden Seals for their first round pick; he parleys said pick into Guy freaking Lafleur. ... forum.calgaryflames.com/index.php?showtopic=2651&view=getnewpost - 108k - Cached - Similar pages
Dave_NC,..I Remember Barry ,Clahane ,.and Terry Clahane,.and I think Patrick (but i'm not sure about that one,.and I think your right ,it definetly was one of the aves,...... (2nd,.or 3rd??)I Remember my oldman telling me that he also knew the Clahane family ,.when he was a kid,.and had attended the funeral of one of them ,as a young man, then the bad luck struck again and a Clahane from my age group died youngand later (70's ) a cousin of the same Clahane family died in Lasalle ,this was Kerry Clahane ,.....I would think he may have been 19 ?? So young,...strange when those things hapenned,......Remember in Verdun,.whenever there was a funeral,.everyone would stop and look at the procession,..usually had a bunch of people walking behind the hearse,.......(mind you the Churches & Funeral Parlours were never very far apart...........
Les. Just a short note on Sam Pollack. Alan L. and I went to the Forum one night for the Canadians game. Alan had press passes and we went thru the entrance that the players used. We were only a couple of kids at the time. We went up to the catwalk and was watching the game. Sam Pollack came along. With his finger, he told us to come along with him. He escorted us to the entrance gate and showed us out. He did not say one word at any time. Did not chew us out or anything. It was quite an experience. Did some great things with Alan..... Winnie I can see you two doing that ,.and Alan probably just laughed when you got outside,.....hahahaha and you know He's always laughing,........not much seems to bother himWhat a neat memory to have,.....................it was always a Real Thrill to just Walk into the Montreal Forum,.and have that Huge White Bright Sheet of Ice ,with lines & emblems briallntly shining,..........and then you looked up to the roof to be greeted with all those Stanley Cup Banners,,,,,,,,, .............Sam Pollock .........Get Going hahahahahahah
Thanks Les. I am going to keep that e-mail with the pictures. Yes, Alan and I did some crazy, but not dangerous, things together. What a sweatheart of a guy. Just love that guy..

So there I was driving along the 401 today and your question about Billl Telford's hair popped into my head (I have to wonder sometimes) . I realized I hadn't answered you . I'm sorry. You asked if he had red hair...and yes he did. Hope that helps.

B.F.N. Sharon

Hi Sandy,.yes you'd be correct in me living next to the Savoy,...then if you 'are' following,.you know I also mentioned living right nextdoor (2nd floor) but nextdoor above the Guardian, btwn Rielle & Gordon on Verdun North side,...... also if your still following along I mentioned I also lived right next door to Norman's Patates frites,.on Wellington across from Sally shops,..and New Verdun Restaurant (yes there was another new VerdunRestaurant,.which moved to the middle of the block from the corner (Gordon & Wellington NE corner)...... and I do believe I've posted pics from all of those locations...............hahahaha See why I can talk to the cops for hours & really say nothing,......I cover the bases...............hahahahahahaha Cheers .............& reveal little....hahahaha How's our favourite sister doing,.......2008 is coming soon,.......and I'm sure Bill (the smartest Prez for quite some time .......is anxious to try his old house key again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This thread seemed to generate a lot more action than I thought it would.
As for Mike Ortuso,.........I Remember him being incredibly good as a Hockey Player ( my memory may be wrong ,.but he either made or could havemade) the Verdun Maple Leafs,..in terms of talent) ,.but the knock was size.........too bad , Annother name you mentioni Bracken,.......was he related to Harold Bracken ,.a FireChief for the City of Montreal > ( Point St Charles area actually).....I beleive his daughtesrs lived in Verdun,.....(maybe neices)........... ..and the Spittachine name also sounds familiar ,.as I beleive we have a member here on the Verdun Connections,site.,.......(Mark is it???) who has a Radio Program in Montreal................................ if all this is so: then it really is indeed a small world.......................
Hi All
Lots of things here.

I wonder if the Golden Seals opportunity came from the Charlie Hodge ,era,.and the GM (from Montreal ) he was on TV too,.....what was his name............ Here's some history: 1967/68: The Seals were among 6 expansion teams as the NHL doubled in size. Not really sure about that,.....but I'm sure about his being a really good Hockey Player..................(still recall some other sibling s though) .......I also seem to Remember a connection to some good Hockey players from Verdun,.....by the name of Redmond,............(don't know if tey were related to the Mickey & /or Dennis variety...........)
During the team's last two years in the league, their mascot was Sparky the Seal, drawn by "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz, who was also a season-ticket holder
The Seals also had many outstanding and colorful players on the team including Gary "Suitcase" Smith, Gary Simmons, Gilles Meloche, Dennis Maruk, Reggie Leach, Ivan Boldirev, Carol Vadnais, Ron Stackhouse, Bert Marshall and Harry Howell.
Bob Don't remember those stories re gorilla or mask. I was very young innocent and naive! ha! Dolly
Hi Dolly
I was definitely young and innocent. Wish I had seen the gorilla mask caper, though.

Hi Re Mike Ortuso remember seeing him driving 56 or 57 T Bird...on Wellington St. Good hockey player...Did he not have a brother who played hockey as well? Verdun Maple Leafs of that era good teams... Lad
I think your right,.(the Lad:) .....I was going to mention or ask that yesterday,.as they were fairly well known (it seems to me) ,.and I did think one brother did play at a higher level,..........the only knowck on Mike was size,.yet he played like he was twice that size,......Odd that a Henri Richard,.or an Yvan Cournyer,.......whose stature were not huge,.but their play was.... the Verdun Maple Leafs of those days were fantastic to watch,.....with the likes,.of Guy Charron,.Guy Lapointe,..to name a couple,..........and a few years back i mentioned there was a defenseman by the name of 'Punch Cartier' who was even better than Lapointe ( hard to believe ,but he was at the time) He was drafted by Boston College team,......and you cannot find any eveidence of what ever happenned to him,.as he was Boston Bruin property,........but one of our members at the time Chuck Catto relayed that he was a tenacious player ,but He too was a victim of the 'not big enough ' theory.........too bad Jimmy (Kungfu) was it you that got us that info from Chuck and posted it for us at the time??? You were a friend of his (right?)..............his member ID was Dewline..............
I also knew the Cllahane family too... Your Dad was big into sports in Verdun too wasn't he?

Hi Sandy
I was trying to remember the name of the senior Office Boy. Gord Jones... Wow. I remember him coming into teh Mail Room one day when I worked there and showing off his new teeth that he had made. Thank God he didn't take them out. I was 17 or 18 and had never seen anything like that...nor have I since. Don't remember Wilson Gyton , though. Bet if he made his own teeth, I'd remember him too !!
Glad you saw Wayne Feeney the day he wore his Gorilla mask. At least they weren't pulling my leg....like that never happened !!

Ok I'm just going back over all the posts and this name came back to me from post #25,,,,The name ,.I couldn't think of then,.that left Montreal to particiapte with the California Golden Seals,.........was Frank Selke,..................... it was buggin me ,so I had to post it,..................hahahahahah and I know it doesn't follow the thread at this point,...sorry 'bout that chief'
Dolly...you worked at Imperial Tobacco, too? so did I!!! Dianne
Lad
Les Danny Barnoff lived on Rielle right? He worked at Bar B for a bit...I think. Lad
Hi Dave..did Shawn live on 2nd...you are right he was great ball player..remember seeing him play... Lad
the Lad: Yes Danny Barnoff lived on the bottom floor flat,.I Remember they had a fancy front door,.( or so we thought ) Remember if you had a bottom flat,..you were pretty much rich.................hahahahahah Yes Danny also worked at the Bar B as well,.I wouldn't doubt if he's still with the family biz. ? I think he also lived in Florida for a while too.
Lad, I think Clahane lived on 2nd. I'm not positive, but I know he did live on 1 of the avenues.
hi Dave_NC ,..Sam Pollack was probably the most shrewd Hockey man of his time,.....and te Canadiens owe many of their super teams to his credit,.... I do Remember the deal that brought Guy's draft choice to the Habs,.but i had Rememebered that the LA Kings were in the race as to who would end up with the 1 round draft pic ( which of course would be Lafleur),....and so with story was that Sam wanted to bolster the Kings team (instead of the Seals) ,.and so he sent Ralph to the Kings which immediately strenthened the Kings and they earned the 1st round draft pic,......(which Montreal had traded for previously) He hedfged his bets ,.and won,........ Good thing too,.Couldn't imagine a Guy Lafleur with the Kings or te Seals,.........Yikes,......... too bad the Habs didn't get Marcel as well....................Imagine those two together............. Here's a piece from an NHL page, Backstrom received his requested move when he was involved in a notorious transaction between Montreal and Los Angeles. Consequently, Backstrom was sent west in a move that gave him a new lease on life and boosted the Kings in the NHL standings. http://www.legendsofhockey.net:8080/LegendsOfHockey/jsp/SearchPlayer.jsp?player=11896 .But Right you are it all started with the Trading of Ernie Hickey ,.which as the statement says Sam 'parlayed' into the Guy Lafleur acquisition........... ....The mans sure had fantastic insight,...as well as a really good network of talent scouts who report all these young talents,....... ....................................Thanks for the memory prompt Dave_NC those were some great times in Hockey (especially for a Habs fan) hahahahahah
Sorry Dav_NC I meant to add this ,about the Trade of Ernie Hickey,...in the previous post,...but hit the old 'send ' button to quickly,........ Here it is: Discussions: Worst Trades in NHL History - Calgary Flames Sam Pollack trades Ernie Hickey from Montreal to the Golden Seals for their first round pick; he parleys said pick into Guy freaking Lafleur. ...

Dave_NC,..I Remember Barry ,Clahane ,.and Terry Clahane,.and I think Patrick (but i'm not sure about that one,.and I think your right ,it definetly was one of the aves,...... (2nd,.or 3rd??) I Remember my oldman telling me that he also knew the Clahane family ,.when he was a kid,.and had attended the funeral of one of them ,as a young man, then the bad luck struck again and a Clahane from my age group died young and later (70's ) a cousin of the same Clahane family died in Lasalle ,this was Kerry Clahane ,.....I would think he may have been 19 ?? So young,... strange when those things hapenned,......Remember in Verdun,.whenever there was a funeral,.everyone would stop and look at the procession,..usually had a bunch of people walking behind the hearse,.......(mind you the Churches & Funeral Parlours were never very far apart...........

Winnie I can see you two doing that ,.and Alan probably just laughed when you got outside,.....hahahaha and you know He's always laughing,........not much seems to bother him What a neat memory to have,.....................it was always a Real Thrill to just Walk into the Montreal Forum,.and have that Huge White Bright Sheet of Ice ,with lines & emblems briallntly shining,..........and then you looked up to the roof to be greeted with all those Stanley Cup Banners,,,,,,,,, .............Sam Pollock .........Get Going hahahahahahah
Thanks Les. I am going to keep that e-mail with the pictures. Yes, Alan and I did some crazy, but not dangerous, things together. What a sweatheart of a guy. Just love that guy..

Hi Queenie66
So there I was driving along the 401 today and your question about Billl Telford's hair popped into my head (I have to wonder sometimes) . I realized I hadn't answered you . I'm sorry. You asked if he had red hair...and yes he did. Hope that helps.
