C-A-N-A-D-A     ..........................Remember that song,   "It was 1967 that he wrote Ca-na-da, which quickly became the most popular song of Canada's centennial celebrations....Over the next few years, Ca-na-da sold half a million copies.  There were some 50 different recordings of the song, and some 250 school choirs and bands recorded it.  In 1971, Gimby presented the original manuscript and all future royalties to the Boy Scouts of Canada."  -- Alex Barris and Ted Barris, authors of 'Making Music - Profiles from a Century of Canadian Music.' The patriotic song would eventually earn him the Order of Canada in 1967.

history by the minute: Synopsis
There was much to celebrate in the year of Canada's Centennial, but its crowning achievement was Expo 67, one of the greatest birthday parties in history. One of the most successful international exhibitions of the 20th Century, Expo 67 gave Montr챕al the opportunity to show itself as an international city and proved once and for all that Canada had come of age.

But the story of Expo 67 must begin with the fact that it almost didn't happen at all. The Canadian government's application to the International Exhibitions Bureau in Paris for the right to hold a "first-category" exhibition, as this was called, was rejected in favour of the U.S.S.R, which was marking the 50th anniversary of the Communist regime. However, when the staggering costs forced Moscow to withdraw their bid, Canada re-applied and was selected.

It was a great event,...............................Expo67 Expo 67 in Montreal was a gleaming futuristic spectacle. A monorail train snaked through the immense grounds. Pictured here, the Canadian pavilion along the St. Lawrence River. (National Archives of Canada, C-030085) http://history.cbc.ca/history/?MIval=EpisContent.html&series_id=1&episode_id=16&chapter_id=1&page_id=3&lang=E   The Montreal Star described it as "the most staggering Canadian achievement since this vast land was finally linked by a transcontinental railway." Expo 67 was sleek, sexy, and lived up to its theme, Man and His World. It was visited by more than 50 million people, a stunning international success.

We must remember Phillipe de Gaspe Beaubien,  Operations Managaer. He was primarily responsible for putting it all together. After the Provincial Government wrestled the control from Drapeau's hands, he managed to get it done on time. People like Pierre Dupuy took the credit but Phillipe was the man that Quebec put in charge because they knew he could do it.     Ed

It sure was great living in Verdun at the time.  I was in grade 11 and practically lived over there.  The nice thing was being able to choose when to go to avoid the worst lines - you got to know the patterns.   I remember one day Mr. Frieburg(??) let a few of us skip band practice and the rest of the afternoon so that we could go see Gordon Lightfoot - he was a young fella and was to be performing in one of those free little bandshells.  I was a big Lightfoot fan and was thrilled to be able to sit around with him and only a handfull of other people.   Actually he's coming to the Merrytimes in a couple weeks to perform in Saint John and I have my tickets - near front and centre.

I will try to find the article,.  I read many newspapaers everyday,.usually starting withthe GAzette,.but I must have missed that ,with all the story's on the Expo thing in te last few days,.  I will have a nother look:   The city of Laval, north of Montreal, will soon be connected to the metro system when a new station opens in the summer of 2007. Free rides as Montreal metro celebrates 40 years Last Updated: Friday, October 13, 2006 | 7:29 PM ET .............here's the link to the whole story from last October.......... http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2006/10/13/qc-montrealmetro40anniversary.html

les__f MSN said...

Yes it seems that to celebrate the Metro line to Laval,.they gave Free Rides (as they did to celebrate the 40th ann. of the system back in October as well)   Here's some of what I found re: Laval Metro, Free transit April 28 and 29
“To mark this important achievement, the STM Board of Directors agreed to give the public a first look by holding an Open Doors event on April 28 and 29 to celebrate the official opening of all three stations”, explained Mr. Trudel. “Transit users will have free access to the STM’s entire network so they can discover the new installations.” Information stands will be set up in various locations for the occasion, and teams of AMT, STM and STL representatives will be on hand to provide visitors with a variety of transit information. “From now on, our clients will benefit from a full range of transit services, including bus, metro and commuter trains. For us, that’s what providing better services means: working together to their advantage. And from our side, more than ever, our employees take pride in having to transport an entire city ! So, for the purpose of sharing in this momentous occasion with all Laval residents, STL transit will also be free on April 28 and 29,” emphasized STL Chairman, Jean-Jacques Beldié. For the STL, the extension of the métro’s Orange line was an opportunity to redesign their transit network, with an eye to converging upon the three new metro stations. As a result, 19 bus routes will head to Cartier station, 3 others will make a stop at de la Concorde station, and 14 routes will travel to Montmorency station. Consequently, the STL expanded the number of bus routes from 34 to 40, a 17.6% increase. The number of daily departures will rise to 2166 on weekdays, a 16.7% increase. On weekends, the numbers jump by 24.1% and 23.5% respectively, with 1339 departures on Saturdays and 1224 on Sundays.   Here's the link to the complete story ,where the above paragraph appears. http://www.stm.info/English/info/comm-07/a-co070411.htm

That really is an amazing system,.where you can jump on the metro in Lasalle,.and travel to the South Shore,.or to the East end(roughly).....or to Laval now ,.I would think that route (to LAval) will get lots of ridership, it's a great idea,.I wonder if they will eventually head towards the West Island,or even to the Eastern tip of the Island of Montreal,........that would really be something.........................................

I was impressed that we (a family of 4) could ride the bus from Verdun to Beaconsfield for under $10.00. It may have been a little more convenient if we didn't have to first go to downtown but it was an enjoyable day (even missing a stop).

les__f MSN said...

yes that's certainly a deal ..........cause you just don't get much of anything for under $10 dollars tese days,,,,,,so to be able to take the family on what amounts to a days outing for that type of money,.really is a bargain,........ While we're talking about Montreal, how about Montrealers? I left McGill yesterday (where I teach a class on Mondays) heading to the Union St. Metro entrance. I stepped on something that turned my ankle and I opened the heavy steel door with my head. The door remained intact however but I was not.      I was instantly surrounded by people who lifted and sat me in the doorway. A young women produced a box of kleenex and made them into a giant ball which a young lad held on my head to stop the bleeding. A man asked questions and relayed the answers to the 911 despatcher. Another man held the heavy metro door open so the heat would be on my back. These wonderful people stayed with me for the whole twenty minutes it took the Ambulance to get through rush hour traffic. When the Medics arrived they magicly disappeared. I never got a chance to thank them. The medic said they would take me to the best Hospital in Montreal, Verdun General. Strapped down on my back in the ambulance (they worried about my neck) I was looking at the rows of lights on the ceiling. It brought to mind an Irishman's joke. If you're in the bar and the wall in front of you has rows of lights, you're probably on your back on the floor. It reminded me this was not the first time. Anyway, the Doctor put nine stitches. The medic said I was not cut, I was contused. I agreed, I didn't know even my own name, but that happens a lot anyway                 Ed

Les, in answer to your post #40, yes these sites all end up being a chat room, including this site, in every thread here people are chatting about one thing or another, isn't that what connecting is all about?  Some of the content is off of the internet, which most of us have seen many times..The difference is in what is chatted about.  One site would prefer to have a much more Raunchy membership, which suits them fine. They also love to tear another group apart, including this group, and those members all come from here, and still belong here, they come back in here and are so sweet it is sickening. Except one of them who was terminated from here, a year or so ago... and who is responsible for another person to be terminated. He has now burned bridges to two sites...I hope he is content and can sleep at night.

Privacy is a choice,........although quickly becomming less of one in some places....................hahahahah I have also thought that if I want to talk to a W3rd Ave,.or a Les_f,.or a etc etc ,.....We can do so ,.but what if it's someone you never did get along with or didn't like ,and wouldn't talk to if you met them on the street, but you will within certain groups or organizations,.where you may only know their ID name or first name,...............Generally then it eliminates the descrimination factor, but still nice to have a choice,......(your own choice)..........hahahahaha

In answer to some questions above;   1. The Metro is not going to sue me.   2. I am delighted with outcome. When the Doctor pulled the two sides of the skin together in order to stitch it, my ears went up an inch. I now look ten years younger. I'll ask her to do my fat ass next.                                Ed
