Yes JMH that really is a very identifiable Montreal landmark,.....I have posted several pictures of this over the years,...I will dig some up and post them later on,........the Face of the City is changing ,and the Montreal we all once knew,is inevitably going to be entirely different in years to come,..... At least the Mountain will still be there,..............most of the old Grain Elevators have disappeared,..but I believe one of the lastones standing will remain ,but you never know with the value of real-estate these days ,..nothing will be spared it seems....... I guess that is Progress,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Thanks for the Info "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Heritage Montreal wants to save Farine Five Roses Flour sign
The lobby group Heritage Montreal says it will step-in and try to save the Five Roses Flour sign that has been part of the city's skyline for half a century. The sign's future is up in the air after the Five Roses plant was sold to Robin Hood Flour. Heritage Montreal's Dinu Bumbaru says it's an opportunity for Montreal companies to look beyond the "bottom line".
Bumbaru says Heritage Montreal will be getting in touch with the city to see what can be done to save the sign.

Why do they want to save the Five Roses Sign? It's ugly! My mother worked there for years and she hated the place. Said they speeded up the assembly line until she had to quit. It was so difficult to keep up. It was their way of getting rid of the women workers at that time. Nah, I say. Take the bl____y thing down. Heritage you say? Would rather save the CKVL building! Now that's heritage! Dolly
My guess is that the sign wasn't connected to the assembly line...............hahahahah and blaming the sign is like ,tearing down Place Ville Marie,.cause they didn't hire you,at Air Canada............hahahahahaha ....................Five Roses was also once Ogilvy's Flour,.........
One solution is 'change the sign',.....seeing that it has changed hands in the past,.......keep the sign and just change the name to Farine Robin Hood Flour........they bought the building so ,just put their name on it..... :Have Fun & Remember Verdun" ........hope they don't have to speed up production, to pay for the purchase of the building, based on today's Real-Estate & Property Values,.......geeezzz they have to get rid of everyone just to make it economical enough to run..........hahahahahah ........times running out,.....................................................................HF&RV
it still a very recognizable landmark sign,...... a lot of cities over the years have taken to trying to save old signs, but refurbish them ,so they look good,...they represent styles of the past,....and Montreal has lost most of it's Industrial Past,..and sometimes have regretted it later when it was too late,.....part of the Montreal skyline and any city's skyline,Like Montreal's Big Milk Bottle,..(unfortunately that one hasn't been kept up at all),.......but tearing things dowwn just because ,isn't always a good thing,......but things can newver stay the same I guess,.......Let's tear down the Orange Julius,.....it too really doesn't serve much purpose, but it is recognizable,......and that's what Home should be to some extent ,a familiar & recognizable place,to some degree, Although We'd never be able to drive by somewhere like our parents did, with us,.& say ,When I was your age there used to be a .....blank right here..............hahahahaha Remember when we were kids ,.we probably thought ,Yes Dad,.but who cares,.it's gone now........hahahahahaha " Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
On the same sort of theme,.....it would be nice to get a picture of those 2 cows on the sign at the old Elmhurst Dairy,........there's doesn't seem to be any 'sign' of them anywhere................hahahahaha HF&RV
Hmmm No Dorchester,....No Verdun Stadium,.....No Wellington Tunnel,....No Richard Park,........No Autostade,.........all just a 'sign' of the times I guess: hahahahah have fun & Remember Verdun
Not quite the same Les as Five Roses is/was also the owner and employer. If Place Ville Marie had a big ugly sign on top of its roof saying Air Canada, I'd still want that sign down. I believe in preserving buildings, etc. for historical purposes because they are beautiful and still contribute some history to the community but the Five Roses sign? No way. Let it go. The unfortunate thing is that here in Edmonton, they are too quick to destroy something because it's old and then they build these quick cheap structures that are torn down 10 years later. Someone told me when I moved out here that Edmonton was like a pop up picture book. Buildings pop up and then they're gone. Mind you things have changed in the last 10 years but it is a fight to salvage anything here. Montreal is just the opposite. I mean let it go, it's an ugly big sign by an ugly big employer. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it or even notice when it's gone. For me, it doesn't define the Montreal skyline. My opinion.. Dolly
Here in Halifax.....well I actually live 25 miles outside of Halifax.....anyway...there is a very strong heritage society that protects heritage buildings and I believe that is a good thing....if it weren't for that group so many beautiful buildings would have been torn down and replaced by modern condos etc., and their history gone forever. I am not sure the Five Roses sign would fit in that category but it has been part of the Montreal sky line for years. I guess I don't have an answer to the question..keep the sign or get rid of it...but as a society we tend to get rid of signs, buildings etc and once they are gone, they are gone forever. Dianne
The five roses flour sign hardly represents Montreal, especially since it is french only. I think the cross on the mountain speaks a language we all understand and is a true artifact of the city. Ed

I agree with Sabby! The sign is quite ugly especially in the daylight!
