It chased the car for miles and finally fell exhausted before we could catch it. I took it to Doctor Brown on route nine North of the beach road and he gave it some shots and vitamins. My daughters friend called her grandmother in Verdunwho had just lost her old dog and wanted another one, so Sunday night the old Mutt (now called Cumberland) and I headed for Verdun. Two weeks later I got a call from someone who claimed they had found my lost dog.. I said that it was impossible since my dog was safely at the trailer with my family in Plattsburgh. They said they had called Plattsburgh and were told it was my dog. Then it hit me. Ol’ Cumberlandhad taken advantage of a gate left open and got lost in the unfamiliar neighbourhood. The wonderful people on the other end of the phone had taken in the dog and found Doc Brown’s name and number on the collar tag he placed there so I could get the dog across the border. They called Dr.Brown and he had given then my number from the bill I paid. When I offered to come and get the dog ( I lived in LaSalle then) they took the address and delivered it themselves. I later found out that the grandmother was distraught and making her poor husband’s life hell for leaving the gate open. Both were delighted to see the dog again. Most people wont attempt to help a lost animal because they fear being unable to find the owner and getting stuck with the dog. These people didn’t hesitate and by doing so, made at least 5 people happy. These are Verdunpeople . Ed
