Bill, Your post on the Council of Nicea interested me. Athanasius was the man who fought against Arius to establish the Church. Constantinople backed Athanasius who was Bishop of Alexandria. Our Church here in Verdun is named after him Saint Athanasius.    Ed

Winston and Sandy I love that show too!! She is so funny!!! Didn't know her father was a billionaire.  How did he make his money? Maybe he thinks that it is important for people to work at being successful and  make their own money with out hand outs from Daddy.   Dianne

She comes from a wealthy Franco-American family. Her father is French billionaire Gerard Louis-Dreyfus. They are an investment and banking group. Have been around since before WW II...She was raised in the USA...and has not used her family to help her succeed. Others have brought up the family connection though. Some people do like to make a name on their own...She is one of them...

Diane, You ask about Verdun. The one thing here is that we are consistent. Every year for seven years we have had rain for the full four days of the Wellington street sidewalk sale. This week they managaed it again. Our Wellington street merchants are cursed. It's been said that one of their stores are on the site of an old Indian burial ground. However I suspect that may not be true since I'm the one who made it up. You'd be surprised the differemt ways the story has come back to me and even from an Alderman who swears by it. Hi Les,   Thought you might like to know, the weather here turned nasty late in the afternoon.  A tornado was spotted in south west Edmonton areound Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Lake Wabamum.  My son had just left the area when the hailstones came pounding down and flooding.  The emergency evacuation network came on the radio.  It was scary.   We watched the news and the funnel cloud never touched down but it was unbelievable seeing people trying to move their vehicles and themselves onto try land  At one point the water was as high as a shopping cart near the Sobey's in Spruce Grove..   It's that time of year when we get very hot temperatures for a couple of days and then dive into a cold front.  The two produce a cocktail of tornadoes.  This is the time of year when we watch the skies.   Know you have family here, thought you might be interested.  It's cloudy now. West Edmonton around 170 st also had flooding.   Have a good summer!

And it was on this day in 1951 that the world's first commercially
produced electronic digital computer was unveiled, known as the
UNIVAC. It weighed eight tons, used 5,000 vacuum tubes and cost a
quarter-million dollars. But it could perform a thousand calculations
per second, the fastest rate in the world at the time. The first one
was bought by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The president of IBM thought that computers were far too complex and
would never sell, but with the invention of the microchip in 1971,
all the processing power of those thousands of vacuum tubes could be
crammed into a tiny space.

In 1975, an engineer named Ed Roberts was one of the first people to
try to market a computer to ordinary people. It didn't sell very
well. You had to know how to turn hundreds of little switches. But it
was an inspiration to Stephen Wozniak – who went on to found Apple –
and also to a young Harvard student named Bill Gates.

This was sent to me by someone who has a bone to pick with Alberta I guess. Is this based on truth?

Regarding the 12 NEW rules for entering Alberta:

1. Bring your own house.

2. If going to the Oil Sands, bring your own house, school and hospital.

3. If going to Edmonton, wear your flak jacket. This is the murder

capital of Canada.

4. If driving to Edmonton, it is also the auto theft center of Canada.

5. If you are bringing drugs, head to West Edmonton Mall, the drug

capital of Canada.

6. If you are looking for work, look no further. Minimum wage is

$15.60/hour.

7. If you work downtown, parking costs $8.00/hour.

8. If you are able to buy a house in Calgary, why not spend the money on

a 15 year holiday.

9. If you drive a Hummer, look out. We have the highest gas prices in

Canada. The Alberta Advantage.

10. In Edmonton we have 5 hospitals. 10 years ago we had 7. Don't come

here sick.

11. In Calgary the population has exploded. The last road was paved 12

years ago. Calgary is a no parking zone.

12. Remember Roy Rogers etc. beating the Indians? It is payback time.

They own all the Casinos here.

We even have a hockey team that was so bad this year that they took out

a full page ad in the paper apologizing.

No tickets were refunded.

It was on this day in 1977 that the Trans-Alaska Pipeline began to pump oil for the first time. It was the largest private construction project ever completed in United States history.Oil companies had been drilling for oil in Alaska for years, without much luck. Then the company that would become Exxon decided to drill one more hole before giving up, and they struck what turned out to be the largest oil discovery in North America. The only problem was that the oil field was 800 miles away from the nearest harbor where oil tankers could pick up the oil and transport it to the rest of the world. So the oil companies decided to build a pipeline to transport that oil across the state of Alaska, 48-inches in diameter, stretching 800 miles, zigzagging over three mountain ranges and crossing 34 major rivers, including the Yukon. Once it began pumping, about 1.9 million barrels of crude oil began flowing through the pipe every day, traveling at about 7 miles an hour to the port of Valdez.

An old Swedish proverb says, "Midsummer Night is not long but it sets many cradles rocking." Midsummer dew was said to have special healing powers. Women washed their faces in it to make themselves beautiful and young.

Everyone was shocked, why hadn't they heard? Marissa even got on Mancow's Sports Director Al Roker Junior's case. Marissa said she should be Sports Director if Al Roker Jr couldn't get news like this. A few minutes later the issue was solved. Marissa had heard that Lady Bird died. Marissa didn't know who Lady Bird was, she thought it was Larry Bird. It must have been a shock to Larry Bird if he was tuned in to Mancow's Show. THE GEOGRAPHY OF A WOMAN

Between 18 and 22, a woman is like Africa , half discovered, half wild,

Between 23 and 30, a woman is like Europe, well developed and open to

especially for someone with cash.

Between 31 and 35, a woman is like India - very hot, relaxed and
convinced
of
her own beauty.

Between 36 and 40, a woman is like France - gently aging but still a
warm
and
desirable place to visit.

Between 41 and 50, a woman is like Great Britain - with a glorious
and all
conquering past.

Between 51 and 60, a woman is like Israel - has been through war and
doesn't
make the same mistakes twice; takes care of business.

Between 61 and 70, a woman is like Canada: self-preserving but open to
meeting new people.

After 70, she becomes Tibet. Wildly beautiful, with a mysterious
past and
the wisdom of the ages...only those with an adventurous spirit and a
thirst
for
spiritual knowledge visit there.

You too can increase your shoe size from a 10 1/2 to 13, and up your hat size by two. Just take steroids. So you have a larger head all of a sudden, you're a good role model for the American children.
They walked Bonds until he was in San Francisco where he was given a mercy ball I could slam over the fence. He got the record home run to the delight of his sell-out home crowd (no pun intended), although the Giants are hovering at the bottom of the league. It's all about the mulah no doubt. Read 'Game of Shadows' if you will.
Certain media people claim the dislike of Bonds is racial. Come on! He was hated by his team mates, especially when he played for Philadelphia. He's not a friendly man to say the least. If he had been a amiable player he would have been admired by most whites. Take Magic Johnson as an example. A sweet heart of a human being. Admired by all fans. There I said my piece.Bill

Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger
then. And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him."
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the
end. Around the corner, a vanished friend.

It's the birthday of Ed Sullivan, born in Manhattan, New York City (1902), a gossip columnist for the New York Daily News who occasionally moonlighted as a master of ceremonies for local variety shows and dance contests. He was working at a giant dance competition called the Harvest Moon Ball when someone asked him if he'd like to try hosting a show on this new thing called television. He was 46 years old.The Ed Sullivan Show, originally called Toast of the Town, premiered live on CBS in 1948, and within a few years about 50 million people watched it every Sunday night. Television was so new at the time that people didn't know what to do with it. Sullivan modeled it on vaudeville and did a little of everything, throwing together opera singers, rock stars, novelists, poets, ventriloquists, magicians, pandas on roller skates, and elephants on water skis. Sullivan had always hated that he was required to "dish dirt" in his gossip columns, so he decided that on his variety show, everything would be positive. He told every performer that they were wonderful.Sullivan was a shy, awkward man offstage, couldn't tell jokes or sing or dance. A car accident in 1956 severely damaged his face and his teeth, and he was often in terrible pain on stage, suffering from ulcers. But he loved performers, and he personally chose every guest for his show. He spent most of his free time searching for talent in nightclubs, often staying out until 4:00 in the morning.Sullivan was one of the first television hosts to invite African-American performers and celebrities onto his show when it was still controversial to do so. Jackie Robinson, Duke Ellington, Richard Pryor, and James Brown all came on his show. His producers sometimes objected to his choices, but the only thing Sullivan cared about was talent. He said his formula for success was, "Open big, have a good comedy act, put in something for children, and keep the show clean."

I have been driving for a long time. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dash that was staring me right in the face the whole time.  I didn't ~ and I bet you probably haven't either.

Quick question, what side of your car is your gas tank? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away.  My solution is to uncofortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look.  If you don't do this in your own car you definetly have done it in a borrowed or rental car. Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury. If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump.  The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump.  If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left.  If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo above). It is that simple! I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated! Why don't the dealers share such importnant information with car buyers?  I don't understand why this isn't in the drivers ed manual?  I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me?  The only possible explantion can be that all these people probably don't even know! Go out and share the worlds best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept secret.

It's the birthday of the Canadian poet Robert W. Service, (books by this author) born in Preston, England, in 1874. He moved to Canada in 1897 and for eight years worked in the Yukon for the Canadian Bank of Commerce. It was there that he began to write. He said, "I was greatly surprised to find my work acceptable."

Influenced by Kipling, Robert W. Service wrote ballads about Yukon life. Two of these poems, his most famous, are "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee." They appeared in Songs of a Sourdough (1907, reprinted in 1915 as The Spell of the Yukon). He left the Yukon to report about the Balkan War for the Toronto Star. During World War I, he drove an ambulance, which gave him material for Rhymes of a Red Cross Man (1916). After the war, he moved to France and wrote more in his later years, but he never met the same fame as he had with his poems about the Yukon.

The Men That Don't Fit In

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.

If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.

He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.

Bill, This photo dates to February 1914 and concerns the repair of a water intake along the Aqueduct damaged by an excavator. Here is what the article reads:   WHERE THE RECENT DISASTROUS COLLAPSE IN THE WATERWORKSW SYSTEM OCCURED.- The above picture, the reproduction of a pohotograph taken by The Standard's photographer just after the water was turned on Friday of last week, shows the point at wich the recent disastrous  and deplorable break in the conduit occured, the temporary pipe of iron that connects the broken ends of the conduit, the frame-work support encasing the pipe, and the old open aqueduct tha supplied the pumps with water from the St Lawtrence River before the conduit was built. It is supposed that the collapse of the conduit was occasioned by the excavations in the old aqueduct - excavations that were made in such close proximity to the conduit that the latter was   weakened by the removal of the support of earth on the one side, and the consequent over pressure of earth on the other. The collapse of the conduit tied up the waterworks system of Montreal for over a week, and made it necessary for citizens to obtain supplies of water in the manner shown in the other illustrations on this page.   The enclosed illustration describes the incident quite clearly and the area where it happened, namely facing the Douglas Hospital. I have written a short article in our fall issue 2007 (SHGV) revue (in French) on the subject wich describes the history of the aqueduct from its inception in the middle of the 19th century, with photos including the 10 bridges over the aqueduct wich I already posted on this site.   Guy

Giving When it Counts...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease.  Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 6-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness.  After the doctor explained the situation to her parents, he asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save
her."  As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed
next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing
the color returning to her cheek. Then his face
grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister all of his blood in order to save her.

FBI Agent: Sonny Bono ‘Clubbed’ to Death by Hitman

Atlanta, GA 4/04/2008 02:27 PM GMT (FINDITT)

According to former FBI agent Ted Gunderson, singer-turned-politician Sonny Bono was clubbed to death by a hitman hired by several top U.S. officials. Gunderson claims that the officials were linked to an international drug and weapon ring and wanted Bono, Cher’s ex-husband, dead as they feared he was about to expose them. He alleges that Bono was ambushed and beaten to death.

In 1998, 62-year-old Bono died in a “skiing accident” in Nevada. His death is officially recorded as an accident. Bono’s autopsy said he died of injuries sustained after crashing into a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort.

“It’s nonsense for anyone to now try to suggest that Bono died after crashing into a tree. There’s zero evidence in this autopsy report…to show such an accident happened,” Gunderson says. “Instead, there’s powerful proof he was assassinated.”

Gunderson’s claims are reportedly backed by several top forensic experts.

Ya ever consider the election process for president is a done deal? I always had a suspicion the fix is in no matter what is said at conventions and on the stump. Recall Bob Dole the republican pick for 1996. Against who? Bill Clinton. Old tired B.D. against young vibrant slick fast talking Willy. Now we have old tired McCain against young vibrant slick fast talking Obama. Palin's expensive wardrobe is another red flag. Who's behind did this decision pop out from? The Republican party headquarters!
Is it possible the powers-that-be actually control the elections from behind closed doors? Republicans get to be in the white house for a time and then its the Democrats turn. Look what happens when a wrench is dropped into the gears; 3rd party candidates. Ross Perot and Ralph Nader as an example. They mysteriously disappear from our sight for no apparent reason.
Colossal money and power are in charge here I am thinking. I will vote Irish but put my money on the other guy.
