V A P A
VAPA, who remembers it and what does it stand for?
Verdun Anti Poverty Association worked out of Chalmer's Church on De L'Eglise for a while. Stan Earle was one of the foremost people in arranging this with Fred Tees The Rector at that time. I worked with Stan on CKUT McGill Radio (Voice Of The Poor) It was during the days of Brian Mulroney. I recall leaving the show one night and was told their was a phone call from someone who wanted to talk to the guy who did the critique on the Federal Budget. Some guy with a slurred voice was agreeing with what I said. I thought , "That's great. Probably our only listener and he's plastered." Ed
I remember VAPA (Verdun Anti Poverty Association) beginning to collect food and clothing for those in need and storing it in a place on the second floor on the corner of Galt and Wellington. Above a store (maybe Gagnon's) I was barely a teen so my memory may be warped but I think that Margaret Collins and Abby Wendt were a driving force in the organization.
Hello 'Mags' if Galt & Wellington was the corner ,...then it would have to have been Greenberg's ( at least prior to '68),........as the City & District Savings Bank was on tte SW corner,........and the Residence for the Church at Church & Wellington,....was on the NE corner ,...........and on the SE corner was another bank,.that I think was the forerunner to CIBC ........(but this I will have to check),........but as for the only corner left ,it would be the NW corner ,...........and that was defineitly Greenbergs...........so I guess they had a second floor dedicated to the useage you mentioned,.............Hope I'm Right ,.......... Have Fun and Remember Verdun
VAPA moved around Verdun quite often, one location I remember was on Verdun Avenue near Egan on the North side, cause I use to bring 50lb burlap sacks of potatoes that we seem to come in contact with.
