YoYo demonstrations in Crawford Park
Does Anyone remember the YoYo demonstrations outside Crawford Park school on summer nights of the 60's. Anyone that could master all the tricks would get a free super power yoyo.
The competitions were held in our school yard. Some of the tricks I can remember are - walking the dog, around the world, baby in the cradle. I had a yoyo that had "diamonds" on it and it was painted a garish/bright color. I also remember bolo bats which consisted of a wooden paddle with a small ball attached by an elastic. The elastics were always breaking and after being tied together many times were soooo short. They sold elastics in a package of 3's. I also remember skipping ropes - pepper, double dutch, etc.
I had a fancy yoyo with stones think that it was purple. We also had really good bolo bats with a thick red paddle - these ones it seemed because of the weight of the paddle the elastics did not break as often as the .25 cents plus tax white wood ones and then there were the .15 cent ones that had a narrow bat and light weight - the 15 and 25 cent ones the elastic was always breaking - we would take a sharp knife and gently lift the staple and put a new elastic and hammer with a rubber mallet then use my granny's darning needle for wool to put it through the ball. Boy we played with those all summer that and our long skipping ropes for double dutch and also hop scotch and we also played marbles and cards against the wall and jacks although not very often it was least favourite game. Then came the hoola hoops - what fun and summer lasted forever.
I wonder how those Yo Yo guys did in life? Did they turn out to be great salesmen or what? Every spring they would show up after school & do all the fancy around the world stuff. We'd all run off after the demonstration and buy yo yos.
One of them is still working, Tommy Smother of the Smother Brothers is a feature of their act billing himself as the YO-YO MAN, and they will be at the new casino in Niagara Falls later this month Gordo.
they hooked me for life! I do noon hour supervision at an elementary school and in my bag of "tricks" I carry a few yo-yos. Some of them standard wooden ones and some with axels and bearings. Boy, can they sleep! They come with books now to challenge the owners, I can still show the kids a few tricks.
Yeah! The Cheerio yo-yo guy would go all over Verdun, stand on the nearest corner to a school ,and before long there would be a crowd of us kids watching and wishing we could do those tricks. Unfortunately, a lot of us couldn't come up with the money to buy a good yo-yo that would "sleep". We had to settle for cheap ones that you couldn't do all those tricks with. Along your same thought, anyone remember the wooden tops that we would wind a cord around from bottom to top, fling it out and have it spin like crazy. Again, there were great competions to see who was best doing tricks and such!!

Those guy's must have been around for ages. I recall that they came in front of our school yard at Notre Dame du Cénacle and made yo-yo demonstrations in the early 1940's. It seems they where not allowed in the school yard as they did their tricks on the sidewalk. Guy
