I have been reading all the previous posts to see if I know anyone besides Second Avenue and his brother.
Linda...I was best friends with your sister Beatrice in high school...met her and her husband Gary when we were in our mid teens...bump into her now and then.
Used to go to your parents home on Briand often...your dad was a real character.
Bea told me that your mum had past away...so sorry to hear that.
Shirley...Just wondering if you had any relatives who lived on second avenue...we used to live at 377...you mentioned cousins Maureen,Colleen and Kathleen...a next door neighbor of ours used to have three girls visit her by those names...she had a son named Billy who was my dad best friend...Billy was killed in a car crash...any relative...this would of been in the fifties.
And...does anyone know the Lauries or Turners who lived on third avenue...would love to find Debbie Laurie...best friend from grade 7 and 8.
Have a happy Day...Carrollinda

Hi Carol, The Laurie's lived just up the block from me. I knew Kevin, they lived almost next door to Billlie Kendall if my memory is correct. The Turner's that I knew lived on Fourth avenue,,,Leslie, Brian , and Wayne. Brian was my best friend in those days and we have hooked up again here in BC. Mike
I lived at 253 3rd , right near Wellington , had good friends the Wades on 2nd right near the lane , oh how we remember Verdun have great day Jimmy
Hi Kungfu, I lived accross the street from you at 260 Third Avenue. Did you live in the same appartment block as the Archers just above the Grovers. I also know the Wades from 2nd Avenue but as you are a couple of years my senior(I am 62) you probably knew the older ones. I knew them all but can only remember Ernie and Vera . Reggie Paine
Hi there Mike... Small world isn't it.Re:Turners...I knew Brian and Wayne...used to walk to school with Wayne sometimes.Last time I saw Wayne was at a grade 11 High School Dance and Brian when I was 21...my roommate and I threw a party and I sent out so many invitations to people I had gone to school with.. not thinking that we only had a 5 room appartment ...to my surprise he was the first one to show up...and...then around 100 other people showed up...the pilot that lived downstairs was alittle ticked off..he decided to call his friends and crash our party...!So long ago but I wonder if Brian remembers that party. I never knew their sister but I believe she was a professional ice skater.Their mother worked at Bell Canada on Beaver Hall Hill when I was transferred there from Dorval...when you see him ask Brian if she is still in Montreal. Do you know where the Lauries are now...or anyone who would know...I really would love to get in touch with Debbie and a couple of other friends from high school. I f you don't mind me asking Mike...how old are you...I am in my fifties...just wondering if you would know anyone else I know from my highschool days. What guys did you hang around with from highschool?
Hi Carol, I will be 57 this year. What was your last name back then, so I can tell Brian and Wayne. Both are back in Montreal right now as their dad is in hospital. You're right Leslie was with the Ice Capades. More later,,,,I have to run. Mike
Carol - Were your neighbours Alice and Gerald Doyle? My cousin Bill lives in Ottawa now the visiters would have been my uncle Bill's girls - Bill and Gerald were brothers - Bill has three girls - youngest two are twins.
Reggie , you have that right, I knew the Archers but can't remember their first names , actually they were on Wellington st, around the corner , I used to hang withRalph McNiff , great hockey player , ewen Cameron , Garry BAker , Bill Lawlor , think the Thistles lived across the street, and you know, before Grovers , there was a store called the Marathon Bakeries, used to steal the Jelly Donuts, had hard pockets from Jelly ooozing out , truck used to park in the lane and deliver, I think driver left one tray there for us on purpose . great memories , also the wades, beautiful people, Vera I remember very well, ernie youngest , think big brother was Ron and they had an older sister , who was engaged to Jerry Maxwell from third ave, he was killed in Korea , great memories hang tough Jimmy
Hey Kungfu, I lived at 3213rd,,,my aunt still lives there. Did you Know that Ronnie Grover died recently? He was a great guy, I always visited him when I was back. Mike
Hi there Shirley...second time answering your post...first one didn't go through...don't know what I did wrong!Same thing happened the other day. Re your post...I am confused ...did you have a cousin who was killed in a car crash...lived with his mother on second avenue...believe their address was 381.Might not be the same people but two of the girls were twins that used to visit them...quite a coincidence. Carrollinda
Thanks for the reply Mike...sorry to hear that their father is ill.Didn't know him...knew their mum...Greta...is she still alive? Gosh...when I read alot of the posts so many people from Verdun have moved out West.I have been visiting real estate sites myself...thinking about moving out to BC within the next few years...if I can get a good price for my cottage and find something there that I can afford. My sister and nephews are in Edmonton and Red River, aunt in Calgary and have my cousin and his wife on Salt Spring Island.Only have my mum and a few cousins here in Montreal...closest family all out West.My mum is 98 and in a nursing home so when I lose her I think I will definitely make a move out West.Would love to live on Salt Spring Island...I teach creative art now... took an early retirement from Bell and think I would like that area...would love to open alittle art store.Gesh...must be getting old...rambling on here like an old lady...tee hee!! If you know anyone who still knows the Lauries please let me know....and let me know who you used to hang around with...being around the same age we might of known/or know the same people from Verdun. Take care...Carrollinda.
Hi Kungfu, The Archers actually lived in your building however when Mr. Archer passed away they moved to Wellington above Grovers.Brian Archer was the youngest and Linda(deceased) and I believe they had an older sister. The Wades were indeed very nice people and I remembered the other two Ron and Betty. Jerry Maxwell was the first known Canadian to die in the Korean War and there is a War Memorial in Mississauga with his name on it. Betty married and her husband took his own life.Baker,Lawlor and McNiff were likely your age. Ralph lived in Oakville but passed away(heart attack)in 2000or 2001 while in Florida..Did you play hockey in 3rd Avenue lane with Ralph Backstrom who was billited at the McNiff's while playing for the Jr.Habs.Ralph made it to Ottawa-Hull Canadians? I guess I am too young to remember that bakery. Reggie Paine
Hey Carol, You still have not told me your last name????? Brian's mom passed away in the late 80's. Mike
Carollinda - my aunt and uncle still live in Verdun - Crawford park and have for 50 years they had Maureen, Colleen and Kathleen. Their mother had sister and brother who also lived in Verdun as did my other uncle Gerald and his wife Alice - they had a son Jerry and a son Billy - Doyle. Now it could be that the people they were visiting were not their father's side but their mother's sister or brother so their last name was either Hunt or Robinson and I dont know that side of their family. Do you remember the names of the neighbours?? My cousin Bill lives in Ottawa with his wife and their children and grand children. I am sure that the visitors were my three cousins too big a coincidence - they were very tall girls and blond blue eyed. If the people were named Robinson then that would be Lily Hunt and her husband and they had a son Alan and I am not sure how many other kids otherwise it would be George Hunt and I dont know his wife or their children.
Hi reg, yes I played with Ralph Backstrom that winter when he stayed with Ralph McNiff , Ralph McNiff and I were almost like brothers , always together , he was a great guy, his brother in law, Frankie Walton was in the Canadian Navy with me , we were close friends. Ralph ended up in Kingston playing hockey, then worked for Dominion Glass , great guy , I am very proud to have experienced my younger days in Verdun , we all have made a life for ourselves, thanks to hard working parents, we used to entertain ourselves, as no money in those days for sure, but tons of friendship and fun as this site unfolds to us, have a wonderful Easter all and be kind , hang tough Jimmy
Hi Kungfu, When they talk of memories from Verdun Ralph McNiff's dog Pepper. Mrs. McNiff sent him off each morning to Bob's cigar store at 3rd and Wellington for cigarettes. The dog returned to their house with the package in his mouth. They wouldn't do that today at $8.50 a pack. Also the other Archer girl I believe she was the oldest was Edna. Also a girl named Paulette Lemieux lived in your building. Do you remember here? Reggie Paine
