How about The Gilette Friday Night Fights & then wrestling from the Forum
(not really one of my favs but sure was popular in the early days of B&W TV)
Certainly the CBC Radio Can. (French) version of La Famille Plouffe.

P.S. Do you remember the old man Plouffe's "Le Sirop Calment" stashed in
the kitchen cupboard that he went to whenever things got a little tight.

Rushbrooke St.

Hello, was brought up on Rushbrooke, played a lot in the DIL field and my Sister went to Rushbrooke school before it closed down. Many good memories around that time.A picture of 3188 Rusbrooke in my Album,Verdun 2004.

Cobblestone Lane?

There used to be a cobblestone laneway in a certain part of Verdun that was still cobblestones even until the late 60's/early 70's.
Does anyone remember where it was?
Les and Winnie...I think you know this one cuz I've mentioned it before. Wanna see if anyone else knows...lol.

Homeward Bound

Well Gang, I'll be heading home on the train this Thursday, I'll be God's Country about 5:30 PM. Hope to see all of you Riverviewer's at the reunion. You know something , when I go back this time I'm going to have a different perspective of Verdun. After reading so many of your posts, when I drive by the different Ave's I can think "oh yeah, that's where Sharon lived or that's where 2nd ave gang is talking about, by the way I lived at 800 2nd ave from 60-64. Anyways gang you have fun until I get back and I'll post some pics from the reunion. PS the food is going to be soooo good.

St.Willibrord High School

Our class of 52 has a reunion every 2 or 3 years at a different girl's house.  They have come from as far as Austria and California and Florida.  We were due to have one this year but I have been sick this year and couldn't get around to organize it.  Hopefully we will have one next year in Montreal.  We have been very fortunite that we are only missing 1 out of 21 girls in the class.  She passed away about 5 years ago.  We have a lot of fun and usually stay at different girl's homes and make it an overnighter.  Try it you'll love it.

Oldest memories

O.K.--my oldest memories of Verdun (I'm 58).
1. The music store (Bluenote?) on the corner of Second and Wellington had a t.v. in the window and I saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on it. First t.v. program I ever saw.
2. There was a dry cleaner on Wellington next to the music store that had the pants presser in the window. I used to stop and watch the man pressing pants (we were poor so I couldn't afford any other entertainment. ha!)
3. We used to wait for the #58 streetcar at the corner of Wellinton and First. If it was raining we'd wait in the entrance of Buckley's. George Buckley's son George Jr. (aka Sonny) started a burglar alarm manufacturing business, and my father, brother and I worked part-time for him making printed circuit boards one summer.
4. Laurendeau's store on Second Ave, halfway between LaSalle and Wellington had bread delivered by horse and wagon. I remember watching Mr. Laurendeau "picking up" after the horse in the summer to use the manure on his garden. (more cheap entertainment!)
5. Inter-City Bakery stabled its horses in a big brick barn between Gordon and Rielle, just below Bannantyne. We'd walk through the barns on the way home from Bannantyne school, and pet the horses, until they chased us out.
This trigger any memories for anyone?

Does anyone remember what was on the corner of Willibroad and Verdun Avenue?

Hi all

My Mom asked me to post this for her...She's having trouble joining!  I'm going to go and fix it for her but she asked if I would post this question LOL

Does anyone remember what was on the corner of Willobroad and Verdun Avenue?  This is going back some time tho!! Well, she is my mother so that should give you all a hint of the time frame she's remembering in!!! LOL

Cheers

Your Oldest Memories from Verdun?

I know we have done this before, but it always bears repeating, and we have several new members that can contribute this time around too.
Name 5 (or MORE if you like!) of your oldest and favorite memories of Verdun.
I lived there all my life till I moved here to Virginia at the age of 44, so I will try to go wayyyyyyyy back to my childhood...lol...

1. The "Better Bargain" stores at the corner of Galt and Wellington. I used to go in there every Saturday morning and spend half of the money I earned from taking orders with my wagon at Steinberg's the Friday night before.  Everything there was SO cheap! Great for a kid of 9 or 10 years old! It was a sad sad day when the block there burned down.

2. For some reason, this certain gentleman popped into my head -- Does anyone remember a mentally handicapped young man named Billy who used to walk all up and down Wellington Street? I think I was about 5 and afraid of him until one day when I was with my grandmother and she stopped to talk to him with me at her side. After that day I always talked to him whenever I saw him too...he was a really nice person who would bring a smile to the older ladies faces when he would give them a flower that he'd picked from somewhere in his travels. I never knew what happened to him, just know that he stopped "being there" one day after being a fixture on Wellington for many years....

3. Buckley's Record Store on Wellington between Willibrord and First Ave. Another place a lot of my $$ from taking orders would end up. Mr. Buckley was a nice man who never said a word to us kids who would pore over all the 45's for an hour or two before deciding on exactly the right one to buy hehe. And he would PLAY each one that we wanted to hear for us on that old turntable of his too!

4. Richard Park. That old playground that was on the boardwalk right behind the fire/police station on Lasalle Blvd and Rielle. When I was a kid, there was a REAL old fire truck parked in that playground for the kids to climb and play on. The City of Verdun Parks still had money in it's coffers than and we had programs in the summer  there were park monitors who would do arts and crafts and things with you every day. That playground had a few pairs of stilts for the kids to take turns using too...they were my favorite! Richard Park had a great sprinkler/wading pool too, as far as kid's wading pools go. We kids would block up the drain in the middle of it so it would fill up with water. Got to about maybe 2 and a half feet deep in the middle...deep enough to play "who can hold their breath the longest under water?" LOL

5. The "Green Thing". That old wooden sled/toboggan run that was right behind where Therrien Pool is now. It was pretty high up...you had to walk up these wooden slats to the top, there were 3 hooks for 3 toboggans at a time to set up against and held you there. A guy in a booth pulled down the lever to release those "hooks" and you went FLYING down that run for a heck of a good distance! Especially if there had been freezing rain the night before and the run was all icy...wooooooo hoooooooooo!!!!

Ok....Oldest memories people! Most of these that I've mentioned were from when I was from 5 to 10 years old....gulp....35 years ago......
Luv, Sharon

Model School

Does anyone remember the old elementary school on LaSalle Rd. at the bottom of Gordon? I went to Kindergarten there, then they condemned the building (no, I didn't have anything to do with that!!!). I then went to Bannantyne for grade 1 through 7. The principal, Mr. Laroque, transferred as well, and became principal of Bannantyne. If memory serves, it was called Model School. They remodeled it and turned it into a French-language junior college.
About the only thing I remember about it was that there were rats in the basement, and that in winter we used the hill that went up to the boardwalk from the playgraound for sledding.

Edible Spam

I wonder if anyone still enjoys the taste of SPAM (or in Canada we had-have KLIK,KAM, and PREM). I used to enjoy it fried, but today there are dog foods that appear more appealing.

hi everyone. yesterday the price of gas rose here to 93.9 a litre for reg. supreme is $1.09.9 a litre. going to give my grandaughter the $40.00 she borrowed from hubby for mothers day gifts, it came on the radio that next week it is going up to $1.03 for reg a litre.  help. our cigarettes are from $10.00 to $11.00 a pack., so hubby came up with a bright idea to stop for a bottle of wine since he uses his pickup for work and  low and behold our favourite bottle of wine jumped $ 4.50 a bottle. i would be crying if i wasn't so angry. how are your prices?? guess we have to buy a motor home and start spending winters in fla. again.  patsy

Montreal Radio

Legendary Montreal radioman George Balcan passed away earlier this week from cancer. He was in his seventies. There were a lot of people called to talk about Mr.Balcan`s many years of being on the air. One of the most interesting was a call that CHOM made to the birdman himself- Ralph Lockwood. Ralphie is alive and doing well, and still doing the occasional on-location radio spot (I believe in Pennslyvania, but not 100% sure). He was his usual nutty self. He told a good joke about Viagra, and even managed to put in a plug for the Bar B Barn. Another interesting thing that came up was someone talking about Marc ``Mais Oui`` Denis, and a website that he has with a lot of CKGM and general Montreal memorabilia. It is quite good. The address is www.marcdenis.com

good old days

Hi folks,
I lived at 159 Second Ave until 1963, then at 1056 Manning for a few years after that. Anybody ever hear from George Edwards, Andy and Jimmy Young, George Reynard, Kenny Quinnell?
I'd love to hear from them or anyone who graduated from VHS in 1963.
Regards to all Verdunites
