Edible Spam

I wonder if anyone still enjoys the taste of SPAM (or in Canada we had-have KLIK,KAM, and PREM). I used to enjoy it fried, but today there are dog foods that appear more appealing.

Just a note about Spam....
The largest consumers of Spam are in Hawaii. It was introduced as a military staple during the war and today I believe HAwaii is the ONLY place on earth to have 5 Star Spam restaurants!

Hey, it's good, it's cheap and it shows that the whole animal is edible.

.......what kind of animal?  ....this reminds me of part of a joke I heard some time ago.....a comedian fron the south was commenting on the term "mechanically de-boned meat".....he said, ' back home where I come from, we call it road kill'..................I guess you had to be there.....

All this talk of Spam - I have never had it so yesterday I was doing some grocery shopping and noticed SPAM $1.99 on sale - they had several varieties so I picked up a can of what was labelled oven roasted turkey roll.  Worse case scenario the dogs will eat it well 3 of my 4 dogs.  For very small dogs only one is really fussy - the queen - the boys are like Hoovers - its food right - mommy gave it to us - must be alright - they dont even stop to chew - only the queen chews - she probably wont touch the Spam even though she loves turkey.  My first maltese loved Montreal Smoked meat - she would not leave my heels when I brought a slab of smoked meat back to Calgary.

Another tinned meat that I find very unappealing is something called corned beef.  The tin is rectangular with a picture of a cow (?) on it.  It is all congealed and pockets of fat collected in the corners.   Sheeezzzee just lost my appetite describing it.  Yuck!  Any body else remember it? Cheers Linda

My Father used to like it - the brand that comes to mind is Frey Bentos corned beef in a yellow can if I remember correctly.  They say it is good to make corned beef hash - sounds like doggie dinner to me.  I cook for my dogs but not a special meal - except for when we BBQ them liver - dont eat that either.  If we are having chicken for dinner the dogs eat chicken too - really it is or was cheaper to feed them chicken which they love by the way than to buy a can of Iams which sells for $1.49 - 1.99 and the dogs really dont care for - the boys will eat it though my female Maltese will NOT EAT that stuff.  Then the Avian Flu hit BC and chicken prices have gone through the ceiling - prior to that chicken legs were .99 a pound 2.18 kg fresh not frozen and I could feed 4 dogs with one chicken leg plus dry dog food for their teeth - cost .60 another bonus to feeding the dogs food I cook - they are never at the vets except for shots.

That is not fat in the corned beef or the spam. That is a jelliton(jelly) type substance to stop it from breaking and crumbling in the can.

Hi Mom1945-Linda,  You should try the corned beef, it is actually good.Great for hash or grilled in a sandwich. Even fry it with onions. It is cheaper in Montreal than out west which is double the price, or at least it was when I lived in Calgary. Dannyb-

OK first ever taste of Spam - tried the roasted turkey roll variety and while I would not want to eat it every day it was a pretty passable sandwich.  Of course I had very good bread and some crisp lettuce and some celery and radish on the side - probably better than bologna.

My father used to make it with fried onions and left over mashed potatoes and a can of Fray Bentos corned beef.
